✅ T-Mobile Home Internet - Things They Don't Tell You - Does Gaming Streaming VPN Wifi Calling Work?

  • T-Mobile 5G Home Internet is rolling out but it has lots of drawbacks that are catching some by surprise. I go thru the most common issues people run into with the new 5G Nokia Fastmile rebranded "trash can" gateway. I touch on VPN for work from home, xbox gaming, wifi calling, signal quality and speed at your home. If you get 4G or 5G signal. For general use and things like streaming Netflix/Hulu/Roku it works great but some of the drawbacks are show stoppers for some users.

The most recent test I ran this afternoon was 283 down, 24 up and a 49 ms ping. None of the show stopper issues he mentions are applicable but they're good to know in any event. I've noticed that the speeds tend to drop significantly between 12 and 6 AM or so. Occasional outages are solved by a power reboot. We're about 1/2 way through our 3rd month and still delighted. Saving $120 a month over Comcast's charges too.

Nate: Never mind about looking at my configuration. After reviewing several of your videos, it finally dawned on me that for dual Wan setup on an ASUS compatible router you must point to the TM gateway using the Wan port of the ASUS router and configure it as a secondary Wan and the primary Wan points to your other ISP as primary using Ethernet port 1 of the Asus. So all is well. Thanks for your expertise in helping me to get this running. I was kinda bummed that I no longer can use Port Aggregation to connect to my NAS, as the dual Wan configuration requires me to use one of the two available ports. Gary

Thanks for the update! Looking forward to your next video after your tower is turned on to 5G. I still have the LTE version but I did sign up for the swap per your support-thanks. Quick question, I am having an issue with my ADT Pulse connecting. For example, when I try to open the garage remotely, I keep getting an error. • @NaterTater

Wayne, not sure about the ADT Pulse, might have to contact ADT to discuss and root cause. Might be that the ADT Pulse system can't get a valid WAN IP? These are some of the drawbacks of a cellular based ISP. Maybe there is a workaround.

They also cut the speed to 20 to 50 at two times a day for heavy tower use. Usually during commute times as my tower is along a major highway. The device is fantastic. In the farthest reaches of my home I have a signal strength of -60db and download speeds of 210 mbps. I can then change the tmobile PW often enough to keep my network secure. I've eexperienced some very small spooling issues, but nothing significant. I have a device that gets firmware & database updates through a software that uses an FTP connection to a remote server. This looks to be a good alternative to home internet service if you live in a sparsely populated / rural area. However, if you live in the city or the suburbs with typical small modern day residential lots, apartments, other surrounding businesses this is unlikely to be consistently reliable. The savings on this compared to my hardwired internet is literally only $15/month. I am glad that it is a new option because some people will need it but it appears it is a good choice only under specific surrounding environment circumstances.

@@NaterTater Interesting. Thanks for the info. I run a couple old netgear routers with OpenWRT flashed on them. I've got one wired to the white box and the other connected to the first netgear router by wifi using the Travelmate package. That's an add on for OpenWRT that someone made to safely connect to public hot spots at hotels and places like that, and to piggyback and connect other devices to it instead of to the hot spot directly.
I usually get 80-90 down straight from the white box and about 30-40 through the added routers. Plenty fast for what I need though I'd like the white box to get a better signal. Sometimes it drops to 30-40 on the white box and 10-20 on the router. I'm only getting two bars on the white box no matter where I put it in the house. Haven't tried the attic yet but plan to.
Aside from the limited number of devices that can connect to the white box (even though the available IP addresses in the settings can be increased to more than 20, I'm not sure if doing that actually works), I had been worried about throttling in the beginning if I connected my TV, alarm, cctv and things like that straight the white box. Probably a non-issue but thought by doing the OpenWRT thing then maybe I could disguise some of the connected devices and/or figure out how to change the TTL to avoid that. I'm very much a novice at networking and don't know much about that other than being aware it's possible, but hopefully I could figure it out if I needed to. Luckily I haven't had problems or needed to do anything in the 3 months I've had it. Thanks again for the videos and sharing your experiences with the thing.

You can't use the tmobile unit as the base but you can put in a mesh network "behind" the gateway. I got it and way faster than cable, I’m getting 750 download and 175 upload through Ethernet cable with full signal from tower. I bought the Google Mesh x2 for $45 each covering 3000 square ft. On average upstair is 525 download and 125 upload through wifi.

Just got it and set it up. I'm out in the middle of the Ocala National Forest in Florida, and am blown away by the performance. Getting about 65 Mbps down and 40ms ping. Don't need more. Was just about to sign up for Starlink - sayonara Elon with your $100/mo and $500 equip charge - what was he thinking? I expect to see more talk about how Starling has a real competitor.
Had significant issues getting the actual online T-Mobile account set up for the device. Many calls to T-Mobile, several CSR's who couldn't fix it, HOURS on hold, etc. Finally got that fixed.
One tech issue is that when I unplug the device (simulating a power outage), it seems to do some sort of reboot, and after about 3-5 minutes, it comes back up on the internal battery, connects to the tower, but there's no WiFi from the device! Weird! I have to plug it back in and power it off and back on to restore it to normal. Any idea on this? The workaround is to put it on a small UPS, but that shouldn't be necessary.
Also, I see that there's an RJ-11 phone jack on the back (with removeable plug cover), but no one at T-Mobile knows anything about it. It'd be nice if I could just plug in a (land-line) phone and have VOIP, but it doesn't look like its supported. T-Mobile just wants to send me their separate VOIP box and charge for it. I'll probably end up using and Obihai adapter. Do you happen to know if an Obihai will work with this box?
    Thanks for your great video!

the factory reset is a known issue as well as the fact that the backup battery doesn't do much for you. Supposedly getting fixed in future firmware releases. btw, you can force update your gateway by doing a factory reset, it'll check for an update. Latest is xxx.0168 Not a big change though from xxx.0143. I've heard Obihai works but I havent personally tested it. I know lots of people use VOIP with their TMO gateway.

@@NaterTater Thanks Nater. I checked and my firmware is up to date with 0168. Will bring an Obihai next time I'm up and will let you know if it works - it probably will. And a small UPS will be a temp fix for the battery resetting issue.

Hey Steve, i have 44 videos on t-mobile. Check them out here T-Mobile Home Internet 5G 4G LTE Wireless: ua-cam.com/play/PL8d9FovK2dNQHp0KWk8gG8XXvaKzaoSB3.html the one that most closely touches on your question is probably the firmware one. In general they fixed some of the VPN issues but their gateways still lack most settings you would expect and you wont get port forward or a public IPv4 from t-mobile until they get rid of their CGNAT. Unless you use a private VPN.

Hi Nater, So my background is network engineering and I just watched your videos for the first time. I also observed that the unit Wi-Fi just seemed to have issues, bot perform as well as my old router and I also thought that connecting my 'old' router to the gateway would help offload CPU work and it is better. TMG just didn't seem to handle a number of things as well, which you also noted - problem multi thread. I have 2 family members that also got them and have reported annoying level issues, that, to me, indicated would go away if using their old router connected to the gateway. Some with Xbox some with certain apps on Fire TV. It was good to see your comments confirming that for me. Nice sanity check, You mention that there are some notes out there on the T-Mobile help desk site about Xbox settings to change or VPN settings to change. Where would I find those? Thanks again.
