Gareth handled some utterly ridiculous questions extremely well. Fair play to him.
The fickle press, all fixated on the last 10 minutes, the penalties, as Southgate, responded with grounded answers forcing them to look again at the match, our history in these tournaments, and the kind of formations we have had to counter. Unless we hear it directly from the manager, we won't hear it all from the press.
Great resilient man who carries himself with class and respect through hell which entitled English fans and media give baying for blood.

Well said, mate. Gareth has taken some very harsh stick that he doesn't deserve. He's a top manager and a top bloke and he's got us to another semi-final. If social media wasn't around today we'd be drooling at the prospect of how far this team can go but, unfortunately, fans seem to grab hold of useless analyses of UA-camrs who are only negative so they can get as many likes as they can. Very sad.

@@markwillson2491 It's the nature of this sport that everyone believes they would make a good manager. Everyone would have their own favorites on the pitch, and everyone, taking their lead from the tabloids, would play the latest in-form player.
The best team is always going an evolving balance of youth and experience, to achieve stability. We aren't the best team by a long shot, We prepare the players we have for the opposition we find, we devise tactics and systems to contain the opposition, and then we look for chances. We don't simply pick our best 11 and then go out and play.
Today we saw Saka doing something we rarely do, and that is play off the corner of the box. most of the time we want to 'walk' the ball into the goal, or pass the ball in from the wings for a tap=in, or rely on set pieces.
If we are tactically inept, Then i say it's not setting up players to curl a shot under pressure through a body of players. Mixing it up. Tonight we were fortunate to have a talented player who could rise to the moment. That only happened because of the manager's selection, and him sticking with a core of players he has already exposed to the pressures of this sport. We had the likes of Kane drawing the defense to him like a magnet to create the space for other players.
Gone are the days of matches won by familiar headline players, The press would have us cling to what they know fails.

He didn't play that game and now gets knocked for it. What he did do was to take his markers on a dance, creating space for others.

Qualifying against Switserland is not a bad feat, but England have been very lucky throughout the tournament and the football was pretty underwhelming. Then again the same could be said about 3 of the 4 semi_finalists, especially France.
I don't understand how we can say that England played well when our first shot on target was Saka's goal in the 80th minute. We are obviously still playing like a hotch-potch squad of strangers with no direction other than maybe keeping it tight without the ball. The attack plan is predictably all down the right wing with very little movement and creativity through the middle and virtually no threat down the left.
One difficult and honest question from a German journalist. He doesnt like it. Sycophantic questions from the English journalists who just want another interview. Sickening. We are playing rubbish because of the stupid team layout from the MANAGER who isnt fit enough to manage a championship team.

Someone did ask about Kane he contributed absolutely nothing to the team Southgate and he should have been substitute after the second half he's just not got the legs anymore rubbish.
He was a magnet for the opposition's defense, attracting at least two of their finest, and in that way creating space for the other players. Be thankful he is still feared for his reputation as our leading goal scorer. He wasn't on to run end to end but to add stability as a captain, doing the less obvious.

I’m not loving GS’s attitude. We should be steam rolling these teams, yet his poor tactics and misuse of top players is making it harder than it needs to be and boring to watch!
It's harder against teams you expect to steamroll. That rarely happens. You really can't claim otherwise as all the factual info is out there year in year out.
Tell that to France, Portugal, Italy, Netherlands who were all expected to beat "smaller teams" they came up against really easily. Didn't happen.
Two of those teams aren't in the competition anymore.

As a german I can tell you, winning a big tournament needs much more than playing beautiful. First of all you need to play successful. Every game is 'death or lieutenant' and not to die in playing good. Argentina has the same attitude, Italy and Germany used to have.
