I head canon that Palpatine was originally planning to essence transfer into Anakin and then after that went south he wanted to with Luke
Mara Jade and Luke being interviewed on how they met
"Oh I was going to assassinate him"
And ultimately she DID assassinate him... technically it was an evil clone, but still.
In the short story Slight of Hand. It turns out Jabba's security is top-notch. They figured out she's an assassin pretty quick. They prevent her from killing Luke because they think she's after Jabba. When she tries to use a mind trick on Jabba to join the Sail Barge. He sends her away, suspecting her to be Imperial.
The emperor could have made Luke an inquisitor to restore the inquisitorious program after they all died out by ROTJ.
Luke has greater force potential than anyone except Anakin and Leia,he was toi valuable to reduce him to some inquisitor
It’s at least apparent Palpatine wanted the power of the Chosen One for himself
Once Palpatine mastered the skill Essence Transfer, he can transfer his soul to other bodies
He never wanted to be replaced by Anakin but perhaps take over his body, and have a younger invincible body for himself
But Mustafar ruined that plan as Vader’s body was ruined as well as his Force potential
Luke changed that as he inherited the power of the Chosen One and is younger, and his body is still pristine
But at first Palpatine was wary of having the inheritor of the Chosen One as a foe
But ultimately decided to make Luke Vader’s replacement and new candidate to be Palpatine’s vessel
He coukdnt make Luke an Inquisitor
For Palpatine knew that as long as Vader lives, he’ll try to use Luke against him
And If Luke was turned, he’ll be too powerful to be an Inquisitor
And would be too ambitious to be held back by limited teachings
Luke would either join Vader or try overthrow Palpatine himself
It’s better to make Luke a Sith and replace Vader, and make Luke Palpatine’s vessel as well
Luke would’ve been too powerful and dangerous. Vader would’ve tried to team with to overthrow Palpatine. And once that was done, Luke would’ve overthrown his father.
With enough time, training and experience, Luke’s potential would’ve made him all but unstoppable. Basically, Anakin 2.0

I also add that Palpatine’s fear from the start, was that if Luke were to complete his training and become a full Jedi Knight, that he would be too powerful to be allowed to live unless he could be turned.

It's crazy to think - Any survivors of the Empire after Return of the Jedi, would've been terrified of Luke. He boarded the Death Star and left it alive whilst Palpatine and Vader both died... Imagine how powerful Luke would've come across to anyone affiliated with the Empire (hence why Moff Gideon was so scared when he saw Luke arriving in the X-Wing)...
But we don’t get to have Luke being powerful and in his hay day on top, training newbies and being treated wel as a character

This is how you fix the last 3 films have Luke having vision of possible futures and the last 3 were movies were false then make the next 3 movies again

The only thing that would’ve shocked Sidious without confrontation is if Vader didn’t try to betray him at all. Trade one Skywalker for another…
First of all, Sidious in drawn into the trap of those who have power, fear losing it and learning of the proposed team up between between Luke and Vader, it is no surprise that he would attempt to forestall it by killing Luke off using Mara Jade. Its only once that attempt fails, that he falls back upon his plan of turning luke abnd claiming that p-ower of the skywalker linage for his own as his new apprentice.

SOOOOO glad I read heir to the empire before watching this! (I'm on the third book; It's amazing! Somehow, It has all of the mysterious magic the original trilogy had in my mind; it truly felt like Star Wars, in its purest form)
It would have been cool and ironic punishment for Mara if the Emperor made her marry a Darth Luke then forbidden them both form killing each other.
It makes me sad Mara Jade is a legends only character. I thought her development with Luke was interesting.

1 - Anakin / Vader never knew peace and balance in life.
2 - Lucas modeled Anakin’s fall to the Darkside from the fallen angels, namely Lucifer.
Anakin was never going to be an Uber powerful Force deity in the afterlife. Knowing that he was had the potential to be the most powerful ever and had a galaxy shaping destiny, is what corrupted him. He in his arrogance believed that because he was to be the most powerful, and that he had fulfilled the prophecy, meant that he was infallible and destined to rule the galaxy, and that stayed with him until Return of the Jedi, despite the Force using Obi-Wan to give him an epic slap down. He willingly spent half of his life ruining the galaxy. Just because he let his parental instincts kicked in at the end to save his son, giving him a moment of peace, since his son had faith in and forgave, does not make all of that go away, allowing Anakin to have everything and all the power he could want and over everything.
Thematically it doesn’t make sense. Morally it doesn’t make sense. And that’s at the heart of Lucas’ stories.
That and the whole Mortis arch is misunderstood.

There was a reason why there weren’t any portals in the WbW. It’s because she didn’t go there, physically.
There was a reason why everything in the flashbacks was fogged out like a dream and they were like they were back then. That’s because it was more of a dream. They had the CGI of those scenes backgrounds, so that wasn’t the issue.
There was a reason why, Anakin in those flashbacks seemed like the old Anakin from the Clone Wars. That’s because that was how she remembered him.
There was a reason why Anakin seemed to change back and forth to Vader in the distance, half concealed by fog. That is because she had been going through a period in life where she was having trouble resolving in her mind, whether there ever was much of a difference between the Anakin that she knew and Vader, who he became.
There were two reasons why Anakin was hostile to her in the WbW.
1 - because of the time that we know that she literally was in the WbW, she had just escaped from Vader who she had discovered really was Anakin, and yet he was not...
2 - because she was literally fighting for her life in the real world.
There was a reason for the whole theme with her character arc which was pointed out not only while she was “with” Anakin in that episode, but also was brought up a few times throughout the season. Which was that she was worried that she had too much of Anakin’s dark taint and legacy on her from her time training under and fighting at his side during the Clone Wars which was a war that the Jedi never should have been involved in. That ultimately, it showed her that Anakin was more of a warrior rather than a good and stable Jedi , but that he had trained her NOT to be like him, but rather he trained her on how to survive in a war and without loosing herself Where as a teen and adult, Anakin only cared for a few and that list narrowed over time, while she still cares about everyone like a normal person should. She fights because she needs to. Where as Anakin/Vader fought because for him, that “is where the fun begins”.
There was a reason why she was able to beat Anakin. It’s because she was fighting herself. Or at least, while communing with her, in her dreamscape, he was limited. The question was: Did she want to live or not? If she wanted to live then she needed to fight, because otherwise she was going to drown. And lo and behold, she was falling, then woke up in the sea, sinking and nearly drowned.

Luke was way to old to be trained in the first place he came to peace with everything he lost alot quicker than his father so helped not fall to the dark side but also experienced pain and loss but was already trained to deal with it so he is Luke Skywalker jedi night already more powerful in the force than his father but everything else experience combat or towards the darkside! A danger to everyone including the sith so should be executed instead of trained!!
