  • If you want a really affordable Les Paul type guitar, look no further than the Harley Benton SC-200. At least that's what they want you to think. Let's find if that's the case, if indeed this super cheap single cut guitar is worth what little money you have to fork out for it. Enjoy!

Looks to be very similar in quality to my Epiphone Special 2 Les Paul . Flat top , same switch/knob configuration . Very inexpensive . I love that guitar but my stepson has the identical Epiphone and his would need a neck shim to come anywhere near the playability of mine . These cheaper guitars can vary greatly in workmanship and setup . I may need to get one of these to add to my cheap guitar collection :) . Great review !

That is why i like bolt on necks, shims can easily completely change how the instrument plays.

If it's comfortable to play and stays in tune (after an initial setup) then it's absolutely fine for a beginner, for a travel guitar or a road-pig that can be left on stage between sets.
Or as a platform to experiment with - learning to change pickups, pots etc.
And it does not have someone else's finger cheese (or worse) on it were you to spend a similar amount second hand.

It reminds me of the Epiphone Les Paul Special Series (VE, Ebony, Special Plus, Special Plus Top etc). But the body and neck are mahogany....bridge pickups are really hot, like 15K Ohms+. Personally i like SC guitars (Les Pauls and Teles) and i really like just 1 tone and 1 volume knobs and no binding!

Thank you for mentioning 'finger cheese' - now I can never buy a used guitar again 😂😂😂

Looks great! Sounds sensible! So cheap doesn't have to be bad, even if it's not your personal choice. Thanks for your objective test and subsequent assessment.

For a cheap student guitar it actually sounds pretty darn good. Heck of a lot cheaper than the epiphone les paul 2 I had that was complete rubbish. I hate to say it but I'd take that Harley over an Epiphone any day. Great video Elmo!

Buy a cheap HB. Watch some UA-cam videos about guitar setup. Buy some cheap tools, a new set of strings and set it up properly.
Result: You have a playable cheap guitar and the skills to set up the next, more expensive instrument. Now you are a player AND a technician - what's not to like?

I think the structure of the Harley Benton guitar offering is very similar to other types of products - you have the cheapest of the cheap, a middle tier that is of great value, and an upper tier that touches the limit of a "budget product", but in exchange, you get high(er) end specs ("all-leather interior, a subwoofer in the trunk, sunroof" kind of deal). Most people are expected to buy the middle tier - the SC-550 II, maybe the SC-450, or the SC-Custom II, not the lesser equipped SC-200 models.

Really like that fat, warm sound, actually. I think it sounds great - and looks good too. Budget guitars are streets ahead nowadays - but beautifully played and reviewed too, of course!

Moin,i love your reviews, thanks for so many interesting facts and honest reviews. There is just one thing, and no, its not the shredding😂love that😊, its something i just realized. Please dont get me wrong, but, as you mentioned, you play real good amps...how should i say...Someone that cannot pay for a good guitar, cannot pay for a good amp. What i am trying to say, if you review a cheap guitar, wouldn't it make sense to check it out with a cheap, but good, amp?Don't get me wrong, no critics, just an idea.Mean,i guess almost every guitar sounds halfway good through a Plexi😉Please keep it on🤘

Hi Elmo, do you think that Yamaha 212v and boss katana mini are a good combo for a beginner for 325 €? Would you change anything? I just want to practice and get better and mostly will practice at home!! Thanks you and thanks for the content!! 😄

I thought the sc400 was the cheapest you tried ?😂 speaking of which the sc 400 despite what you said i find it to be a real good guitar. Some things had to go , yes , like the tone, volume knobs. Maybe the pickups one day. But its really really good.

I own the SC450 Plus Vintage (really nice guitar) and 3 other HB models and I was browsing my local marketplace yesterday and saw one of these being sold for £55 - apparently bought for a kid who had two lessons and then gave up - a pain I'm sure tens of thousands of parents have experienced. The guitar was just put back in the box and has sat there ever since. I was actually tempted for a moment, just to see how such a cheap instrument looked and felt in real life - if nothing else I could practice on my maintenance and set up skills. I mean, that's less than a couple of family trips out for junk food! I could probably even sell it on via my son's guitar school and make a little profit as they're always after student instruments.
I have too many guitars already...so I stopped myself telling myself it was the sensible thing to do.
Sounded alright to me - even Elmo sounded surprised - and for a beginner, for such a small investment, I'd say it's about as risk free a way to start out as you can get.

Your email was a good reminder that there are options out there when you make a purchase. Sometimes people just want to get rid of something but don't want to throw it away. One man's garbage can be another man's treasure.

  • @CathodeRayNipplez
    @CathodeRayNipplez 3 місяці тому +5

Sure it might not be perfect but geez it's still cheaper than a night out of pizza and beers. It does show how much you really can get for a few bucks and in the hands of a proper player I dare you to criticize. If Hendricks or Townshend did a solo on this just before they smashed it nobody would be discussing it's 'tone' in the morning.
