My grandad was a coal miner from Shirland, Selwyn Blount, my dad Jack Clements, tried after leaving school didn't like it and Joined the RAF. I visited a coal mine with the school, (Mortimer Wilson Comprehensive) in the late 70's, probably 1979. It was great fun, very exciting and loved to hear the miners swearing over the intercom. We went down a very fast lift, sat on a little train, walked what seemed to be miles banging our heads on the roof supports, at least the taller of us did, it was difficult to judge our height with the hard hats. We visited the coal face and then left, we were all knackered, and all we had done was go to work, we did not do anything or spend eight hours down there. No wonder miners tended to like a beer. It was very well paid but sod that, I too joined the RAF.
This is fascinating ,I’m from the N/E and mining was a large part of our local economy as was shipbuilding ,if we hadn’t moved I was going to get an apprenticeship at wearmouth colliery but that’s all regretfully in the past ,the folly of which will come to haunt to us. The folly of having a service sector economy now is showing how really weak our economy is with this hideous virus remaking misery ,pain and despair on this land ,when we overcome this future governments must look at the mix of our economy ,coal and it can be used cleanly drove our first industrial revolution ,let’s hope it’s part of the solution to the next revolution ,industrial archeology is a fascinating interest of mine but you soon find out what’s gone.
