Reunited Korean families bid final farewell

- The first round of reunions this year between Koreans from either side of the border is over.
More than 80 South Koreans travelled to the North to see their relatives.
They've been apart for more than 50 years.
Al Jazeera's Caroline Malone reports.

Its insane to think about these in the 21st century, when almost all countries are interconnected and free travel is possible. What is even more sad is that they are both Koreans. This is what the cold war brought us.

It's always the ordinary people that touch the softest part of one's heart. Seeing this and echoing the two Korean leaders stepping over the low cement line couple of days back really make me wish the true peace on the peninsula.
What's even sadder is that the Father is a South Korean and his daughter is a North Korean. They are both old, but sadly they need to separate ways again after meeting for a very short period. Even in their tomb, they are still separated.
As a South Korean, I just want to say this. Shame on the North Korean government for making reunions filled with unfair rules. Shame on them for making these reunions so short. No emails, letters or phone calls? Just shame on the government in North Korea

Of course they want the information kept in control so they want it to be tightly as possible and im sure that those who are able to meet their families are strictly chosen probably base on its loyalty to the state

This is so heartbreaking they are not even allowed to write letters ? I can't even imagine the pain and loneliness these people must have gone through
Honestly, this is very sad. DPRK and ROK should arrange some sort of communications like phone call or video chat between those separated families or allowed them to resettle in the choice of their country. There is very little chance that they will meet again in person before they pass away and being with the loved ones and family before dying is what people need most.
thettin684 north korean defectors would definitely want to communicate with their left ones in the north. why don't they? these defectors don't know themselves that they might see their families again in their life times.
it is the north korean government which does not want any type of communication due to its vulnerability of their regime. even these family reunions, the south has to pay out a lot to the north and persuade the north to happen, once these north koreans back to the north, they need to 'donate' all the goods and money, received from their south korean family members, back to the north korean government, forced to show their loyalty to the communist party. how pathetic!
Sunny Wu plenty does not mean that there are even many more suffering in the north. those defectors are mostly from the border area with China. how about the rest of the country?

I have been to China in the 90's and 2000's which was not too different from North korea, so be more empathetic with your communist brotherhood.
Well North Korea doesn't want that. If North Koreans learn about the prosperity of the South, the regime will crumble.
The North probably doesn't want to allow it. Letting people communicate with the outside world is a threat.

My ultimate wish is for "peace and harmony" to reign all over the world. For all to be helpful to each other. Imagine a world when we work together as one. Probably won't ever happen, but I'd still love to dream about peace overtaking everything.

It's bittersweet, they finally aware of their relatives alive and met once but can't make contact and meet anymore. Even on some short documentaries people said they think it's better before when they don't know if their brother alive (and do the ritual for respect the death relative every year) than meeting for a brief but can't do anything after

Those relatives ..I would have them both sides coming and meeting..every Saturday and Sunday!!!!All their life long!Even a special permit to travel and see one another's house and place!No other nation I interference..Just Koryo people for Koryo peopl.I hope the love of both Goverments touches this point to be an example for 'll the modern and not modern world governments!from heart to heart...from relatives to relatives.nothing more and nothing less!

the dictator does not want any "longing" and influene to be brought back to N Kor. so I assume and maliciously expect that these elderly people are going to be "extinguished". I WANT the country to be whole again, I WANT Kim Jong Un to be in prison for life. I WANT families to be together. When I say NK Regime supporter, I mean Kim Jong Un's friends who cause suffering to his own people.
Imagine you have to suffer this pain just because of two clashing ideologies wayback to Korean war. They jusy wanted to be reunited with each other and the fat leader only give you few days.
