Not to be that guy, but that's actually the hungarian major scale, since you've also got a minor 3rd alongside the major 3rd and no second. That's a cool ass scale, insane flavor!
I often wondered how qotsa created such a good atmosphere on their songs and albums. It’s like a dark circus had a baby with a Stephen king novel. I’m pretty certain this scale has a lot to do with it. 🎸🎵
What’s funny is that Josh doesn’t even necessarily think of it as a scale. If you watch his Guitar Moves interview it’s more of a “sometimes I like to add this note for a dark/silly curtsy/cabaret vibe” and some patterns he came up with. One thing I love about not starting out as a classically-trained musician - every newly-found note/riff is an adventurous little discovery that paints its own vibe. As opposed to being taught methodically and your teacher like, “And now the 4th mode of the major scale is called Lydian, with its characteristic sharp 4.” One feels like school, the other feels like you’re pioneering a new musical landscape. 😂
Goddam this attitude pisses me off so much. It's fine if you just play guitar in your bedroom, but the point of knowing the names of things is so you can communicate about it with other people. One time I was in a band with someone who didn't know what a bar was. He was teaching us a song he wrote and we asked him how long a section was, and he said "let's work out a hand signal!" and got mad at us when we asked him to just figure out the number, like we weren't letting him feel special. Guy just plays by himself now.
@@BreenMusicLessons actually its the half whole diminished scale if you want to play the entire thing. This is a pentatonic version of it. I feel knowing the full scale opens up the true 'queens sound'. its the reason you could move up a minor third and continue playing in the same key with the exact same pattern
Ah yes, that haunted circus medieval fairytale forest shaman scale.
exactly!
no way! ye gap-toothed fuck! What a wonderful surprise
lmao yeah pretty spot on
Dark polka dancing
don’t squeeze the shaman
my friend once called homme guitar style as “desert devil blues” and it never felt more accurate 😅
That makes sense when you consider he was in Kyuss, and made the QotSA album "Songs for the Deaf"
didnt happen

Like seriously how did you manage to fit every qosta song in this.

oh man this sounds so good, been coming back a lot recently
Thanks!

@@methyod lolling at the hand signal visual
Great insight
If memory serves correct, he once said he skips 5th notes in his scales.
I think it's in chords he skips the fifth.
In scale he just plays pentatonic, but last 2 notes are moved one semi-tone up.
well goddamn this is some genuine legitimate-authentic shit!
Fantastic job!
Thanks!
@@BreenMusicLessons Subbed. Keep up the good work!
Killed it 🤟
Thanks!
This was awesome!
Thanks!
Nailed it! Awesome playing
Thanks!
Spot on😮
Thanks!
@@BreenMusicLessons been listening youre so vague and keep your eyes peeled. Stuff like that. And i saw algorhythm do its thing. So i clicked on it
Totally!
ginger elvis scale..i love josh homme
real talk QOTSA has a killer drummer
all QOTSA drummers are just insanely good
Yeah they do. All of them
“you got a killer drummer there, man”
somehow and for some unknown reason this scale is so soooooooooooooooothing ...
Because it comes from the depths of the soul
I'm turning ooon the screeew
John McLaughlin likes this scale too
Yes and he liked it way before; when Josh was still swimming in his Dad's bag.
Yup
man the algorithm has blessed me today, awesome playing man! gonna go improvise to turnin on the screw now 😂
Good luck with the practice!
We call it Terry Bollea on Zankantu
super clean playing and perfect bends. throw some ring finger in there on the up beats and you’ll be playing country riffs in no time.
Sweet guitar! What is it?
Schecter Diamond series
Is this played in standard E tuning? Btw killer licks!
Hah - coming here a year later and seeing a comment from a few minutes ago. I'm curious about this too.
Yes the guitar is in E standard..I think I played this over a D drone track
@@BreenMusicLessons thanks!
It really rides the line between "technically proficient" and "annoying Wawa sounds"
“Annoying Wawa sounds” is how I describe the experience of being stuck on an 8 hour road trip and eating a questionable sub from WaWa at the start
@@jmhdsn Interesting. For me, it's what I call Kirk Hammett's lead style.
Love it! are tabs available anywhere?
Thanks! No tabs, this was all improvised
Look up Lydian dominant scale if you want Homme’s signature sound
@@jofall91 yea I agree, it's almost the same scale
@@BreenMusicLessons Almost? What changes from that scale? I need to know 😅😅
@@Fanchus_English he throws in an occasional minor 3rd..Lydian Dominant would only have a Major 3rd
what scale is it? which notes are you hitting?
Basically a lydian Dominant (b7) scale with occasional b3rd
@@BreenMusicLessons ty very much!
Guys what tuning is this?
Standard
This sounds a bit like Opeth too.
That so great! Now how does a mortal like me learn to play it? What scale is it?
Take private lessons with me 😉
What is this sorcery ??
So I guess harmonic minor with passing tones?
More like Lydian b7 with passing tones
Give credit where credit is due. Homme is pulling from Joe Shit the Ragman
Don't forget Gravel Gertie
Sounds like some variation of melodic minor.
Yea I can hear that
@usethesupersonic3072 true, just a mode of melodic minor
@UseTheSupeRsonic That's what I thought. I got it from listening to John Petrucci. It has a very distinct sound.
So what is the actual scale?
Basically it's the blues scale with a Major 3rd instead of a minor 3rd
@@BreenMusicLessons cheers man!

@@jj5022 but if it was truly half-whole then there wouldn't be the major 3rd in there right?
It sounds more like he's going for lydian (or lydian dominant) sound
isn't it the Egyptian scale?
You run in like a lydian with a flat six
I'd say Lydian with flat 7
I bet this is probably some weird deviation of Locrian
Lydian Dominant with an occasional minor 3rd
Ok so I make that:
e f g g# a# b c# d E
Close...C# (Db) F, G, G# (Ab), B, sprinkle in an E every so often. This would be for the key that I'm playing in this video
Lydian dominant just? You'll find this is actually known as the Simpsons scale
Good call
How dare you use His name in vain! Good guitar skills though 🙂
It sounds better when you don’t play it cockrock style. Tone it down dude.
