It boggles my mind how the federation told samus "go wipe out every last metroid in the galaxy" and then proceeds to do nothing but make more metroids for the rest of the series
Gotta keep her busy, how else can they research other bioweapons?
Wipe out all metroids (so we are the only ones that have them)
Sounds familiar to some earth governments don't it?
@@Zekana0 That might be true except they didn't have any until Samus brought one back to them unprompted.
It's almost like the galactic federation is corrupt and just wants to be the strongest force in the galaxy.
Power Move
I used to think samus killing a whole species in one go was ridiculous, but you have to remember that the metroid were not a native species, but they were manufactured in a lab. That is why they were all condensed in near the region of their invention and why it could be argued that they are relatively few in numbers. Their life cycle and reproduction rate might be slow, it could be whatever since, at the end of the day, they are artificial.
Yes, but that also brings up the question of how X were being confined. I mean, X is a smart species, wouldn't they just leave the only area with their one and only predator?
@@oguzhangungor9117 I don't know about the X, I think they were likely invented after the fact to find a new enemy for Metroid fusion, and therefore not taken into consideration while developing Metroid 2
But as I understand it, the x only became intelligent when fusing with humans and gaining their memories. I don't think they had any plans of universe domination before.
I also think it is implied in the remake that the X lived underground where the metroids were found and that excavating that area the chozo discovered them and sealed them alongside the metroid lair.
@@diegog1853 the X were native to sr388 and the chozo saw what they did and so created the metroid to wipe them out. Most likly the X were very low in population and hiding out for there lives which is why you never saw any in 2 and when all the metroids got wiped out they made a resurgence. thats how fusion happened, in fact i believe that was directly explained in fusion.

It’s rather fitting that Samus Returns repeatedly calls back to the Prime Trilogy, as the game makes more sense with the trilogy in mind than it did with the Galactic Federation apparently deciding to wipe out the metroids after only one incident. I would also like to mention that I got the Amiibo 2-pack but not the game itself at launch, because the squishy metroid was something I really wanted to have.
@@ramonandrajo6348 How is it lazy to make a 2D game using 3D models?
@@ramonandrajo6348 Uh… What? I know 3D is technically easier to animate than 2D, but it’s mainly a stylistic decision in the end. A lot of newer 2D animated games go for a fully animated approach over pixel art unless they’re deliberately going for nostalgic appeal, and I’m fairly sure that it’s easier to get something to look exactly right using the precise nature of pixel art that with the less structured traditional artwork. If a company wants something to have a certain look, than unless they’re an overly greedy one like EA or Activision, they’ll usually put in the extra effort to nail that look, and if they can’t be bothered, they can always used squished 3D models to cheat on that like _Paper Mario: the Thousand Year Door_ did. Mercury Steam was heavily inspired by the Prime Trilogy, so using a 3D artstyle and going for a similar aesthetic makes sense. Choosing an artstyle for anything involves deciding what would work best, and Mercury Steam might have simply felt that the 3D style of Metroid Prime was what worked best for the series.
@@AzureGreatheart Nintendo is known today for doing the bare minimum when it comes to games and service as fanboys and casuals are always going to buy their products / services without questioning anything; try again but with a better excuse, fanboy.

@@ramonandrajo6348 Somebody disagreeing with you does not make them a fanboy, pal. Maybe try dropping the hostility?
Samus Returns on 3DS is a solid remake but it is right in the middle tier of Metroid games for me. Still good but not my first pick. That said, most of the issues that hold it back for me I attribute to the 3DS itself, it's not the most comfortable console for me and the move set is a bit too busy and awkward to manage with the touchscreen. Thankfully Dread seems to have already addressed most of those issues and it not being on the 3DS or tied to Metroid 2's repetitive structure is kind of a big deal for me so I have full confidence in Mercury Steam going forward with Dread.
Edit: Finished Dread the other day and...yeah. Everything not great in Samus Returns was pretty much fixed in Dread. Arguably the strongest Metroid game. A top 3 Metroid game for me personally.
For me I wouldn't even call it a good *remake*, because it throws out almost everything that the original game is remembered fondly for. (The atmosphere, the ending, even the way the wildlife thins out as you approach the metroid hive) While they get rid of what didn't work in the original (the gameplay) they just throw the baby out with the bathwater and fail to really represent much of the original game at all outside of very very basic things.
While it's competent as a videogame, I think that it doesn't do the job of representing or celebrating the original very well at all. AM2R, on the other hand, does! (and very much in the way that Zero Mission still celebrates the original even down to representing alot of its level design WHILE making it have stronger links to Super, similarly to how AM2R infuses links to Fusion.)
@@Jackelbeaver While I prefer AM2R between it and SR, I can tell you that it does not have Metroid II's atmosphere in the slightest. It borrows much more from Super, ZR and the Prime games in that regard than it does the original. It doesn't feel creepy and claustrophobic, it feels ambient and peacefully isolating like Super and Prime. It does keep the life thinning out the deeper you go and the peaceful ending though. Really neither of them truly capture the tone and feel of what Metroid II set out to do. If you're really looking for that authenticity, play the original. It's a lot more playable than most people make it out to be.
@@SoIstice overall though, am2r has more of m2’s best qualities in it whereas sr kinda doesnt have any of them.
@@Jackelbeaver u think peeps at nintendo eer feel buttblasted dat sum gaijin fanboi who originally had legit no xperience in video game design managed 2 produce a better remake than they themselves on a nonxistent budget? Wouldnt surprise me at all if they response to guastis work was motivated less by ip rights & more by jealous insecurity lol: AM2R is a masterpiece & a triumph of personal passion n amateur game design, & tha official remake is a lukewarm bag of wonderbread
@@awnaur0no919 You're forgetting it took well over 10 years to make AM2R, so it was enough time to polish it to the state it was released in. Mercury Steam didn't have nowhere near the same amount of time, even if they had more people and an actual budget, and 3D is notorious for being harder to work with than 2D.
The worst part about Samus Return is that Nintendo had the fucking balls to lock content behind Amiibos, content that was free in previous games. I don't care if i can just check it out in the internet, it was free in the previous games and it should have been free here.

I remember liking Metroid II more than I expected. It's rough, but still way better than the origional Metroid
I really like the huge map of the original lmao, I might be a little crazy but I dunno it's so ambitious for an NES game. The worst thing for me is the control though, having at least the crouch in Metroid 2 was a big help.
I think the gunplay in 2 is far better than 1
Return of Samus works WAY better within the limitations of the Gameboy than Metroid works within the limits of the NES imo
Metroid II is extremely important for the overall development and evolution of the series, in my opinion. It's absolutely rough around the edges, but it introduces many mainstay elements to the franchise's playstyle and Samus' character that it's almost hard to imagine what the series would be like without Metroid II's inclusion.
To me, despite its flaws and limitations, Metroid II is where Metroid really becomes what it is. In a weird way, it's almost like the first Metroid game that plays like a Metroid game, if that makes sense. (Aside from the linearity, of course!)
Ah yes baby Metroid friend time
we shall love it and give it milk.
@@Chad_Eldridge Blood?
Also mad respect for Ridley coming to fight you alone. He doesn’t even bring any space pirates with him. He legit goes to fight Samus one on one. Ridley may be a psychopath but he’s no coward that’s for sure.
the ridley fight is amazing, but I also want to highlight the queen metroid, since you need to make use of every upgrade to beat her and it is great. pretty sure no other metroid "final" boss has done that.
Prime’s final boss kinda did as you had to switch between the beam weapons in phase 1 & in phase 2 you switched between visors. However that boss (especially in phase 2) was kind of annoying.
That battle is even more badass in AM2R, because it offers multiple ways to deliver the final blow. Shoot missiles into her mouth, roll up into a ball and just lay bombs in her stomach... OR PULL AN "OTHER M" AND NUKE HER WITH A POWER BOMB IN HER STOMACH!!
My God, AM2R will always be the superior Metroid II remake just for that fight alone... and I guess the escape sequence in the power plant.
Personally, I really like the ice beam being a separate option: it means that I don’t have to freeze every enemy before killing them. It also resulted in the only time I’ve ever found metroids scary thanks to you basically needing to use a charge shot on them to kill them, which, given they’re the namesake of the franchise, I feel should’ve been done decades ago
For a second I thought you wrote that you like the ice *cream* being a separate option and I was really confused!
Zero Mission had this figured out; it just kills most things but it freezes the enemies you might actually want as platforms.
@@KingCasual1986 I had the same reaction. Glad it wasn't just me.
I still like the way Super handled it, call me a hipster.
@@dprototype6431 No, that is a fair preference, and I am sure most would agree with you, myself included. I like the stacked beams and the option to turn them on and off. Don't know why you would turn them off, but it was neat that you could.
From what I’ve seen of the Metroid series there are two consistencies:
1: Samus always loses her power ups in some way.
2: The Galactic Federation (aka the government) is completely useless.
That what I've gotten from my glimpses into Metroid
Number 2 is false. They actively help Samus multiple times in Prime 3 both directly and indirectly. They're only useless if the plot demands it.

Funny when you consider that AM2R stands for "Another Metroid 2 Remake", but ironically it was the only one that anyone ever stuck with long enough to complete- and then Nintendo revealed their official one.
I barely remember much over Metroid 2 at all, but AM2R and Samus Returns however? Both solid remakes
AM2R is mostly a 1-for-1 remake of the original map. If you've played AM2R, especially if you've played it multiple times, Metroid 2 original should be no trouble. I still recommend it.
@@jacobmonks3722 well here’s the thing

I absolutely love AM2R. I know a lot of people consider it a bit too difficult for a Metroid game but for me, it was a step in the right direction. Obviously, difficulty is a subjective matter mind you but I just love this game's challenge. Super has pretty tight timing on the space jump, it's not you. When I did my series replay in prep for Dread, I had issues with it, and I've beat the game at least a dozen times.

I actually played through Metroid II for the first time the week before Samus Returns released. I had a lot more fun with it than I thought I would. And now I'm doing it again but with (almost) the entire series in preparation for Dread.
In samus returns I like how the game introduces the omega metroid. Spoiler alert- First you fight a zeta metroid after passing through a nearby second metroid layer a think huh not holes to pass through? Somethings up. Then you take down the zeta metroid and have to loop back around and you notice the counter being to flash. Personally, i love all 3 versions of Metroid II pretty much equally, they all have their strengths and weaknesses. The original actually has very good atmosphere and environmental storytelling, like with the lowest areas having next to no creatures, like nothing else but the strongest of Metroids can survive there. Also the destroyed statue holding the final ice beam, those bastards knew it's danger to them. Also, barefoot Samus, instant win. :P

2:37 I'm fairly sure that's because these extras are actually in the game boy game itself, and the Super Gameboy released 3 years after Metroid II, so they would have no way to know to include extras in a format the Super Gameboy could read.

Johnny 2: Return of Metroid 2 Return of Samus!
Been a long week. Glad to sit back and relax with a new Johnny video any day of the week.
I bought Samus Returns with the Amiibo when it launched. Never finished it then though.
Earlier this year I sat down and played it through Citra, and with a proper controller and the weapon switching mapped to buttons, damn was the game much more fun than it was on 3DS. Samus Returns does a lot of things right and I'm excited for Dread.
Fun fact: The original Metroid 2 for Game Boy was developed by Intelligent Systems, the same people responsible for Advance Wars & Fire Emblem. This would be their only Metroid game.
The crippling lack of energy tanks and overpowered bosses really hurt my experience with Samus Returns. I did enjoy the Ridley fight, but just like most of the other bosses I really think he was given too much health. It probably took me like 15 minutes to kill the guy when five or six minutes would have been plenty.
When you get the hang of the counter, the game becomes a breeze. Like, yeah the counter is still a pace-breaker, in the beginning, but being able to flawlessly dispatch metroids in under a minute is ridiculously satisfying after all the trouble they gave me on my first playthrough.
Also there is like no enemies you can hit normally without needing to hold to aim button down until you get beam upgrades, while the lack of energy tanks would be fine if the metroids and bosses didn't hit WAY too hard for no reason that just simply touching them can take away like 80 units of health...
@@jacobmonks3722 the counter kills the game for me
@@wangchung2157 Once you get the Wave Beam the counter is really only "necessary" for boss fights, and given how satisfying it can be to turn the tables on a boss giving you trouble, I find it a net positive. And I use necessary in quotes because you never really need to use it at all. It makes the boss fights slightly easier at the cost of having to memorize the timing.
True but ridley felt like a true final boss testing your skills at the game. I will agree though that he had to much health. I died over 7 times before killing him.
I loved Metroid Samus returns on 3ds . Very good levels imo and nice ost
Those illustrations in the instruction manuel were always super cool. Samus looked so badass.

I've owned Metroid II for decades and have played it in bits and pieces, but finally went through and beat it front-to-back for the first time last week, both in anticipation for Dread and to give a test run to my newly modded Game Boy Pocket. I've heard others describe it as a "skip the original and just play the remake" game, but I actually enjoyed it quite a bit on its own, and I found it hard for myself to put it down. For the original Metroid, I can only get into it by using an improvement patch or sticking to Zero Mission, but Metroid II was all good.
I'm currently playing the OG Metroid II, and it's alright. I get lost pretty fast, but when I'm not lost, it's a good time. Can't wait for this one!

need to finish both
Metroid II was my real introduction to Metroid. I am just a _bit_ too young to have been into gaming when the original game came out, but the series as a whole is actually tied to one of my very earliest memories of life- I can still clearly remember when I was about 4 years old going around to my cousins' place and they were playing a colourful, weird-looking game where this little orange cyclops-looking thing was running around some kind of cave. I asked them what it was and I can still remember them just saying: "Metroid". I had no idea what it was (and I didn't get to play it of course), but I thought it looked cool as hell. But my first console was a Gameboy, and Metroid II was one of the first full-length adventure games I got for it, a serious long-term challenge totally different from the likes of Tetris, Super Mario Land or Dr. Mario. I'll always have a soft spot for that game. I'm sure I still have my original copy of it in my game box somewhere (possibly even the original manual, albeit without the cover, since it was a preowned copy when I got it), and since it's still compatible with the GBA cart slot on the bottom of my old DS (or I could even put 4 AA's in my old classic Gameboy I wanted) I almost feel like I should go play it again now. I won't of course, I have far too many other games to play, but I _could._
Actually, the DS could only play Gameboy Advance games. Original Gameboy games won't fit in the slot.
@@jacobmonks3722 ...shit, really? I never got around to actually trying it (too many actual Gameboy Advance games to play). Oh well, still have my original Gameboy (and my brother's Gameboy Color) anyway.

I really like the 3DS remake and love the counter/parry move. Takes a while to master but when you do it's so much fun and hope it's in more games. That said I do also agree with all the flaws. Annoying but not making the game bad imo
That parry move is essential if you want to try the Fusion mode.
tbh the problem is that the game over rely on it too much that those move which make a fight to become a chore later in the game it's not bad by any mean but still
@@kratosgow342 I heard that more than half of the enemies in SR cannot be parried.
@@AlexaRobin21 it doesn't matter those kind of enemy most people will ignore anyway especially later in the game but in early game especially in Fusion mode you NEED to use parry to get those energy back also do damage cause they hit really hard and in Metroid fight it's a must to use it or you'll be destroyed due to how much the punishment they can take and how hard it hit you
I'm really looking forward to your Dread review.
AM2R Fan updates have added widescreen, surprised you didn't notice that one.
Metroid II was the very first videogame I beat on my own. Mario World and Link to the Past were household staples, but Metroid being on Gameboy made it my own thing to pick apart and explore. And having that perspective, I think a lot of the games choices make sense for the Gameboy specifically.
I like its mostly atmospheric soundtrack. Some Gameboy music can get kind of annoying after awhile on a car ride. And when there is music, you know you've made it somewhere. And the overworld theme is so good!
And I LOVE area 3 where the music gets really chaotic, and the game starts the ramp up the difficulty. And theres a pit of acid at the start that you aren't "supposed" to go down, but you CAN, and reach the otherside with just a sliver of health.
I like the every once in awhile surprise boss. Its an exhilarating feeling I was reminded of when I first played Bloodborne. Metroid II is a game I revisit to this day
... I can admit its fairly barebones. You fight the same bosses a lot. But I think its more remarkable than some give it credit for. Especially when taken into context. And a game i enjoy way more than Metroid 1 personally.
I do like it best on original hardware. I appreciate Johnny played on Super Gameboy instead of emulation though. I think the flat Black & White sucks a lot of life out of the game.
...And I felt the same way about Samus Returns when it came out, but I finally beat it recently and had a legitimately great time! I love the fluidity of Samus' movement. They do a great job to make her look like a badass. And I generally like the verticality of a world built around Spider Ball. Though there are a few cheesy road blocks they put in place to keep you from sequence breaking lol.
Also I DISPISE how bad the remixed overworld theme is. Thankfully its brief, but thats maybe the most important track in the game!
...I almost don't even think of Samus Returns as the same game as Metroid II.
CAN'T WAIT FOR DREAD!!
"My video, my rules" This little bit of humor sums up why I love Johnny's videos.
Better set your Metroid Alarm to October 8th, Johnny
Metroid II: Return of Electric Boogaloo.
Next is Super Metroid 3: The Reckoning.
The original SGB review was the first video on this channel I've never watched... over 10 years ago... man, time really does fly.
Now that I look at it, the Gameboy color palette almost looks like Fusion's Varia Suit.
Johnny let me just say.
Im so happy that your doing this over again. You didnt have to but your commitment and passion shows through. Thank you for your content brother.
I need to finally play AM2R. It looks amazing.
I have a feeling that The super Metroid video is going to be like 40 minutes long and I am on board for that.
Ridley's appearance was dumb and makes Samus look like an idiot. Instead of destroying Ridley's body with a Power Bomb or something, she just... walks away. But this could easily be remedied by having the fight happen in the post-game at Ceres Station, it could be something that only happens for those who collect all the items.
I like how the editor wants to kill Johnny by the ending
