  • It's 3am on a rainy night in South Florida, and mother Kendra Ellis-Connor (Kerry Washington) paces anxiously in a police station waiting room as she tries to piece together what may have happened to her missing son. Faced with a series of infuriating unanswered questions, she navigates a system of unconscious bias, interweaving perspectives, and a tense marital dynamic with her ex-husband (Steven Pasquale) as they try to uncover the truth about their son's whereabouts. Based on the acclaimed Broadway play, and also featuring reprised roles by Jeremy Jordan and Eugene Lee, AMERICAN SON is an emotional depiction of modern day race dynamics and systemic tensions.

Lisa- I have been reading many comments and most of them laughing and making fun of strict parents... i don’t see many comments acknowledging the death of a young man or maybe they haven’t seen the movie ..I was also moved to tears.Very powerful movie ..
Having Cuban parents I know about having super annoying obsessively over protective parents especially with a daughter but we are white so I couldn’t even begin to pretend to know what it’s like to be afraid of the cops.. that was never my parents worry..
This movie was exceptionally profound and shows the complex situation with a white father and a black cop that tells the mother she needs to teach her son how to be a black man in America and of course the father doesn’t understand cuz he couldn’t even begin to understand what that would be like cuz even if he grew up in the 80s like I did where people had crazy hair, wore makeup and dressed like the walking dead they wouldn’t experience anything like this..
I had a friend in the 80s who was stopped by the cops coming out of a club dressed in full crazy punk rock attire and the cops found weed in the car.. The only thing that happened to them was they had to dump the weed out into the street and no handcuffs, no ticket or anything, the cop let them go..The next day my friend calls me and tells me: let’s go look for the weed we had to dump.. We were kids and did stupid things like any kid that age no matter what color u are.. Like I said I couldn’t even begin understand..
Watching the tape of the George Floyd murder, I was in tears watching that man plead for his life, calling for his mother and watching him die in such a horrific way .The evil in that cops eyes!! My God! How horrible!. it was a huge eye opener to those of us who would never experience such a thing because we just happen to be of a different shade.. Breaks my heart... In every level it breaks my heart, for the black man that is profiled and mistreated and for the good cops that are out there actually serving the community.. There are some good ones out there and now they must feel like everyone looks at them like murderers with a badge ..
A lot of praying is what I have been doing 🙏 God help us

I just saw this last night. I'm surprised by the bad reviews and commentary. What I got out of this was the many facets of race relations in this country and in particular about this situation. The movie purposefully plays out stereotypes, commentary, speeches, emotive moments and the raw honesty of fear mothers and fathers can feel albeit differently about their children. It embraces "ghetto" and "going ghetto" in both lifestyle and action as both activities and stereotypes. It is in a way a Kurosawa approach to film, like Rashomon showing various reactions to the same event. You don't have to be "woke" to get this film, you can take it at the emotive level, the social level, or as they say in the film, as a teachable moment. Best film I've seen in a very long time.

But she grew up in a society where being black means having to be untreated fairly and her husband represented that for her because he is white. I think that is why they were having so much problems. Well not really. More like idiot decides to become friends with a bunch of criminals with warrants. And decide to let them drive his expensive car. And then the guy randomly jumps out of the car to surprise the cop. Everyone knows it's not a good idea to make sudden movements. Especially when the cop is aware that the driver is a criminal.

I remember once being pulled over and I started adjusting my seat while he was walking away. I noticed in the rear view mirror that he quickly lunged for his gun. Luckly nothing happened because I quickly realized the situation and put my hands on the wheel. But it's crazy how a small misunderstanding can escalate.

@@ChichiRakhudu No, moral of the story is if you have a warrant out for your arrest they will pull you over. You guys are obsessed with thinking you're the only ones getting in trouble because you're black it's really getting old. You get in trouble more because you commit more crimes. Drive through a nice peaceful white neighborhood and then drive through a ghetto. Are you honestly going to sit there and tell me you think there needs to be more policing in the white neighborhood because there's more crime going on? You can't be that stupid.

It was. Its basically 90 minutes of screaming, arguing and crying. Not a single character is likeable. They bring up valid points where race issues are concerned but none of it feels earned, its all forced and highly exaggerated.
