They have. Been working on it for the last year. The update to support Oculus (and as they say, eventually other headsets) was about to go out last month, but was delayed to add some improvements. As I saw on some demo video, you are set on some kind of apartment-studio with your drums around you. Way better than drumming in the air and pretending there's a kit there, specially with a flashlight hitting your face :D
I'm going to buy this next week and upload a video Lol Its been almost 10 years since I've put a drum video on here. This would be great for me because I work on the road now and it's hard to bring an electronic kit with me everywhere I go since I stay in hotels all the time. Great video as always man!!
Hey man, great review as always. to prevent the camera from moving, you can use a small tripod with go pro mount system for example. Actually I didn't had this issue because I put it on the tripode right away. Just to mention that to me, it's not only fun, when you get confortable with it, you can actually practice and record yourself. I'm not saying it's always 100% accurate, but I'm in an appartement where noise is an issue, and without Aerodrums, I would not have been able to practice when I can't use my Edrums. I also have been able to record for an artist at 1am, but I shouldn't say it on the internet :p I hope she has not subscribed to your channel haha.
I can see from your videos that you've really mastered this thing, great cover. I just got tired of the setup and struggling with hitting the drums correctly. I agree, it's a cool product though. And I've gotta admire the hustle of that Aerodrums marketing team haha, they must have sent a review unit to every UA-cam drum channel on the planet. I see these videos everywhere :)
Here’s another type of person who can really use these: kids whose parents won’t let them have an actual drum set because of loudness and size but this fixes both of those
Haha cool thanks for the review J! I saw these on Coop3rDrumm3r's NAMM 2017 video where he fooled around with them for a minute and was very curious about them!
FINALLY! Drummer can now show up to a gig with about as much gear as the vocalist 😂 The end of lug in - lug out 🤘 That said.... also puts an end to the drummer being the “coolest” member of the band 🤔😒
I think anyone who lives in an apartment and has felt the sting in their soul of putting their beloved drum kit in storage (or worse yet, selling it) would be stoked to see something like this. For example, me. I'm super fucking stoked to buy this shit. You can keep your chops up by air drumming; keeping your wrists limber, ankles and calves strong for double bass speed, practicing your polyrhythms etc. Even with an electronic drum kit or practice pads, your neighbors aren't going to appreciate what sounds like a woodpecker in your apartment or your feet slamming the pedals above your downstairs neighbor. 200 bucks to be able to claim my musicianship and MAYBE even lay down a few demo drum tracks? Shut up and take my money.
I actually gig with Aerodrums triggering Addictive drums (and SD, SSD, BFD etc. if needed). Mostly with the big band in the soul/funk genre, and last gig was only a few hundred people but still. Plenty of talk afterwards, obviously. If the gig pays less than the equivalent of say $1000, I'll use the Aerodrums and not My Gretsch Maple. Both Yann and Richard over at AD are very responsive and forthcoming, and that makes me appreciate the product more. An easy solution to the cable issue - or rather the potential moving camera issue - is to attach some Blu-tack (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-Tack) to the bottom of the camera. I then have both camera and lights on a mic tray, attached to a heavy base mic stand. Works excellent. The upcoming update (if not already here) should take better care of the mistriggering issue, since now, all of the 3D-space is occupied. With the update there will be customizable "dead zones" which also would make it easier to move around from one side of the kit to the other.
6:03 I was watching the video very very skeptic and then I saw the part where you play and I was like F.CK! NO WAY! it seems to be better than I thought. How much latency you get out of it? is it too noticeable?
You should revisit this and do an update review on this product. I'm receiving mine today so not sure what to expect but would love to see if you feel they got any better. I'm confident that a drummer could gig with aerodrums given the fact that it supports MIDI. I mean if you're somewhere where your drums are getting amplified and going through a sound system (acoustic or electronic) what's the difference whether you're playing aero drums or a true electronic kit? If midi is supported is it really any different?
I just found out about this product. Thanks for your review. I'd be curious what improvements that they've made in the past 5 years, if any. One thing that you probably couldn't do with this is rimshots, or especially a rim click or cross stick.
Hello :) I've got a question or two. So I bought the Aerodrums for myself however the two biggest problems that I'm running into is that when I hit dead center on the snare, it'll hit somewhere else, from your video I'm guessing thats just a practice and spacing thing (unless there's a way to shrink the "impact circle"). And the second issue is there is a bit of delay to the impacts and I'm not to sure how to fix that, any help would be epic, thanks
elbow mirrors would effect bass drum on two sides - and the knees a small pair of cymbals - the downside would be a drumming style both awkward and unseemly...
I tried aero drums at NAMM 2015 but i was having a ruff time trying to figure out where the invisible drums in front of me were at. Next year at Namm 2016 I found another company that did something very similar but also incorporated a Oculus rift headset. It worked much better in my opinion.
The simplest way to position a camera is to tape it to the thick, not very important for you, hard-cover book with any kind of tape, or even with glue. Also, tape a certain length of camera wire together with light wire to the same book cover, just to make the camera been able to rotate. The slight opening and closing of the book cover will let you adjust the angle of the head more freely. The weight of the book will not allow the camera to jump all over the room. :) Another way, more expensive one, - is to put the camera on a steady and relatively heavy VIDEO tripod (not the jerky bouncing photo tripod for soap cameras).
What's it like drumming without the feeling of the bounce? You seem to be managing pretty well without the bounce, did you have to adjust your technique? Also would the sensor's be strong enough to drum on pads etc so to have the bounce. Considering buying this
Sam Griffiths - you hold the sticks a little higher up towards the middle to emulate feedback. works really well . there are some vids from aerodrums on the subject you should check out.
This is really nice example of thinking outside the box, and i was skeptic before example but after- even the sound is actually very good for the price. I wonder what kind of material is used at tips of sticks. If it's something similar to a real sticks you could build drum set out of your books or bookshelves. It would also solve the position problem and it would be ideal for beginners, so they don't have to buy drum solid drum kit for 600 bucks before they know if they want to drum.
I'm a guitar player who's learning production and I have really hard times when it comes to programming drums. I was wondering if Aerodrums would be a good idea for that, since the most difficult part of the composition process, for me, is to lay down the drums ideas I have in my mind...
Aerodrums?! Come on, Justin ! It's easy to see (haha) that you are playing a prototype of the soon to be released ultra Vistalite drum set, which now includes transparent cymbals, hardware, stands and of course, triggers. I know because I saw you ( but not the drums ) playing them at Nam last year !
So damn true that about air drumming not getting the credit that air guitar does 😂 air drumming is actually a feasible way to learn! FyI you do get the camera with the kit
This is such an awesome review, you covered everything about the product. Actually yes it is a little expensive, and the setup is cumbersome, theres another product called freedrum its motion sensors attached to drumsticks, but I've heard its not as responsive or flexible as aerodrums, btw i once made a similar thing, i attached infrared LEDs to sticks and tracked it with a camera which played the drum sample, but the latency was so much it was unplayable....but it was a good experiment.
I would like to know what material the yamaha dtx450k pads are made of, and how it feels to play, whether it is soft or rigid, and I'm sorry for some error because I'm using Google translator, thank you
Deyvison Colombini dtx450k pads are all rubber material and feels a little hard to play first. But after some exercises you get used to play more comfortable. Thats a good kit to start drumming. I suggest.
The pads are Textured Silicon with air bubbles. The amount of air bubbles pushed into the pads during the manufacturing process changes the density different for the snare and tom pads.
Hi Justin. TCS pads come into use as from dtx 500 series. With dtx 520k and 522k kits as a snare and except 532k kit as snare and toms. But dtx400 series uses rubber pads at all the pads.
Hi. Before all, I want to congratulate you for your video. My question is about the lag I see between your hit and the sound. Is it real or is an effect of the video? And if it exists, how could you play with someone which a real guitar?. Thank you in advance for your answer.
My cousin Jerry rigged the foot mirror thing to a rock band pedal so he could have an easier time doing the pedal cause he sucks at heel down and had a hard time just stomping on the floor
65 Drums thanks for actually answering homes lol wasn’t really expecting that’s. Another question would anything work if I hooked up my Roland TD-15k drum Brian straight to desk top comp usb to usb. Kinda Weird ? Just wondering
misfires literally would not be a problem for me, lmao. I've literally practiced my favorite songs blindfolded ALL THE TIME. It wouldn't take me any time at all to learn to positioning of the aerodrum drumset. my only question is : Can you CUSTOMIZE the position of each virtual drum piece? not only the x and y axis (horizontal), but the z axis (vertical) as well? if so, no problems at all! I can work out the kinks
They should collaborate with Microsoft Hololens! Then you would be able to see an actual drum kit in front of your eyes and also set up your own much more easily.
They started a collaboration with Occulus Rift, but you get to be in your own world playing drums with that closed VR, with Hololens you could augment your reality, you can play with others, see them and also see your drum set!
I got this and I can't see myself liking this. While I consider myself an amateur drummer, this set is very bleh and hard to play. I do appreciate the call out to the Nitro. I might get that now.

Irreo, I've had the rift for a year now and no such thing exists.
Finally someone answered what I was wondering, that it must be really hard to play without rebound.
It seems to divide people but as I'm entirely self taught via air drumming and I do just fine, it baffles drummers with kits

great review, Justin. I saw the promotion video last month..interesting product

FreeDrum just started a kickstarter for their second series of air drumming. I went ahead and got an early bird one just to try it out.

5:46 as far as I know they're working on a pretty 3D visualisation.
I'm amazed that it works so well - they should include elbow and knee mirrors to fully emulate the traditional one man band concept though..

elbow mirrors would effect bass drum on two sides - and the knees a small pair of cymbals - the downside would be a drumming style both awkward and unseemly...

If you use these to record to a click on a DAW is there any latency at all or does it feel natural to play in time?
I would like to try this
There seems to be a lot of delay between the movement and the sound.
What speaker would you recommend using with a laptop with aerodrums?
Can you play them outside at night time?
Great video
+Ducatimatty Thanks man :)
Can u play ghost notes on here??
I keep picturing a guy in an apartment needing this
How to make a drum cover with it?
Can you use double pedal in it?
does this translate well to a real drum, can the fills translate well?

i didnt know about this product..... it works also with a laptop cam ?
No, you gotta use the ps3 camera. the higher frame rate captures your drum strokes better.
justin what is your opinion of the roland td-11kv?
Decent drumset, just overpriced
does it do cross stix?
Would you consider this product one you can start learning drums with?
Yes you can, but I wouldn't recomend it for that purpose.
i totally expected to scroll down and see "APRIL FOOLS!!!" but...it's real.
Yep, strange but true
Do you need a amp for this if needed.
Could it capture ghost notes?
It can, and it does :)
does it work with airpods?
hey I have them its awesome!! I'm thinking about selling my drum its too much.. Think god they made this tool!!

yes

I use paper tape to hold the camera and the same for the cables. Solved the problem. ;)
