As a Brazilian, there is nothing shocking about this. I've gotten used to being called a "Monkey" online by spanish speaking south americans, especially Argentinians. Racism and prejudice in the latino community is more ingrained than a lot of americans think, its just hidden because everyone born south of the border is labeled as a "minority".
Take solace in the fact that Brazil is by far the dominant economy in South America, vastly over shadowing Argentina...not to mention its cultura e populacao bem agradavel.

The country that has been most ‘successful’ in white-washing its population, history and culture is Argentina. When asked about Afro-Argentines, most Argentineans believe that Argentina never took part in the slave trade or that the Afro-Argentines left Argentina “naturally”. Both of these theories are wrong. What actually happened to Black Argentineans is so disturbing and inhumane, it would be shocking that it wasn’t being taught in classrooms if the world wasn’t so inherently racist. I visited Brazil and I was amazed when I found out that there are zones in Brazil where really old versions of Polish and German languages are spoken and those brazilians considered themselves being "Brazilians" and proud of their story, on the other hand some Argentinians claimed to be Germans just because they hided some of the Adolf's followers back in the day...

I had a phone call (in Spanish) with an Argentinian once (for work) and the dude literally wouldn’t talk to me or treat me with respect over emails because I was Mexican-American (born in the US). He tried to ask for help in English with his horrible accent, so I asked him in English if mine was good enough or if he would still like someone else (in perfect, non-accented English). He complained to my European colleagues, calling me an “Indian pig” to which my company then banned him from doing business with us. This is how your employer should react to racists, not just in America or Europe, but all over the world.

I must admit, I am one of those who had associated Argentina with not only a colonial past but racist one and considered Argentina a haven for former Nazi war criminals. I have since relaxed that view in light of the many Argentine friends I have made especially via football. I personally believe that what makes New Zealand so strong is our treaty with our native people. Although it has never really been honoured it did allow the population to blend. Personally I find it difficult at times to know which race people align with. We have many immigrants from Mediterranean countries so lots of our population has lovely tanned skin. With all due respect, exactly what does Argentina have to brag about? I mean, yes, they have a beautiful country and the Tango dance is pretty cool, but historically, especially economically, they have been one of the worst basket cases in the world. Hardly a decade goes by without them defaulting on, or asking to renegotiate, their national debt. I think Brazil has a somewhat better economic reputation than Argentina. The Argentines might be more "European" than other Latin American countries but that is only because they wiped out their native population in a genocide even more thorough than ours. Oh my.. I'm a Brazilian living in Canada, have been to Argentina, the U.S., Mexico Europe, Asia, multiple times, love all these places and people. Anyone intelligent enough should be able to realize that despite minor differences such as language and culture we are all nothing but humans for God sake, nothing special about that, it's simple logic. As a Brazilian, there is nothing shocking about this. I've gotten used to being called a "Monkey" online by spanish speaking south americans, especially Argentinians. Racism and prejudice in the latino community is more ingrained than a lot of americans think, its just hidden because everyone born south of the border is labeled as a "minority".

Argentina was my home for 4 and a half years. I miss it dearly, it and its ppl truly did snatch my heart, but this is just sad to hear.

True, I watched a video detailing how in Brasil your socio-economic status plays a big role in this as well. Apparently the more money a black or mestizo person makes, the more white he or she becomes in the eyes of society. It's why alot of black Brazilian soccer stars are treated differently.

As a Salvadoran living in the U.S., white Latin Americans (i.e. Argentinian-Americans) are sometimes even more problematic than white Americans.
I had a phone call (in Spanish) with an Argentinian once (for work) and the dude literally wouldn’t talk to me or treat me with respect over emails because I was Mexican-American (born in the US). He tried to ask for help in English with his horrible accent, so I asked him in English if mine was good enough or if he would still like someone else (in perfect, non-accented English). He complained to my European colleagues, calling me an “Indian pig” to which my company then banned him from doing business with us. This is how your employer should react to racists, not just in America or Europe, but all over the world.

I must admit, I am one of those who had associated Argentina with not only a colonial past but racist one and considered Argentina a haven for former Nazi war criminals. I have since relaxed that view in light of the many Argentine friends I have made especially via football. Nigeria and Argentina have a healthy (albeit one sided on results - I digress :) ) football rivalry especially in world cups so I have got to learn a lot about Argentina over the years. While this president's vitriol is disgusting, I will not project this view as representative of Argentines, so no change in my stride here

Personally I find it difficult at times to know which race people align with. We have many immigrants from Mediterranean countries so lots of our population has lovely tanned skin. It pays to not make assumptions about lineage here. :)

With all due respect, exactly what does Argentina have to brag about? I mean, yes, they have a beautiful country and the Tango dance is pretty cool, but historically, especially economically, they have been one of the worst basket cases in the world. Hardly a decade goes by without them defaulting on, or asking to renegotiate, their national debt. I think Brazil has a somewhat better economic reputation than Argentina. The Argentines might be more "European" than other Latin American countries but that is only because they wiped out their native population in a genocide even more thorough than ours. They may have all emigrated from Europe but unfortunately most came from the "wrong" parts of Europe. Well, I've insulted enough people for one UA-cam comment, so I think I'll stop now.

Little late to the game here but the worst part is that Fernandez actually misquotes Mexican poet Octavio Paz. The original line was: "Mexicans are descended from the Aztecs, the Peruvians from the Incas, and the Argentines...from the boats". It was a stab at our perceived superiority when in fact we have no ties to the land other than being immigrants. It's amazing how words of self-reflection are bastardized to one's own end. I, as an Argentinian, feel embarrased by this guy. I know what he means. My four grandparents are sons and daughters of French and Italian immigrants, from the Basque Country and Lake Como (Lombardy). I look different from my mexican and colombian collegues, and have a European Union passport. However, this is not something that we talk about in meetings, because this topic is boring. Only Unitedstatesians enjoy talking about races.

As an argentine myself, i can tell you that is a complete lie. We dont feel european at all, we feel and recognize ourselves as part of latin america.
I watched a UA-cam documentary recently in which some past Brazilian leaders were clear that they, i.e. the Brazilian people, were not 'black' and considered themselves as being white European. South America has had its dark periods where the evils of depriving natives of their lands and chattel slavery of Africans has built modern countries on the continent. Living in the anglicised northern hemisphere, this often gets forgotten.
For me, this whole issue of racism and colorism in Argentina and throughout Latin America as a whole, is crystallised in the painting entitled 'Ham's Redemption' (in Portuguese: A Redenção de Cam - pronounced [ɐ ʁidẽˈsɐ̃w dʒi kɐ̃]), which was painted by Modesto Brocos.
I think that a nation or people who are infected with white supremacy, are ultimately cursed, and further from the grace of God.
In Argentina I don't think there was a thinking about 'white supremacy' it's a problem of ignorance and superiority without sense.
Spanish speakers say that the Mexicans descended from the Aztecs, the Peruvians descended from the Incas and the Argentinians descended from boats... Buenos Aires is the largest German-speaking city in the world, as well as the largest Italian-speaking city.

The stereotypes are crazy when it comes to Argentina and Mexico lol I'm Mexican but dad and his decendents are Spanish while my mom has Spanish and some native but she doesn't look native. I either get confused for a spaniard or a Venezuelan pero Mexican till the end. People forget that Mexico has many states with a diverse population of French, Spanish, native, Irish, blacks, or people who are mixed with either of these with native blood. But again stereotypes
Yes but the biggest difference is that Mexico preserved the culture and indigenous, while Argentina destroyed and ethnic cleasened there history and minorities including all afro Argentina and indigenous

@@hhh1200the usual mexican is mestizo, which means half native half european (spanish), but there is a good amount of whites in mexico its just that argentina recieved large waves of european immigration
