    To an old 70's tanker like me, that's called a neutral steer.

    if one track is moving and turning, it's called a pivot steer. but if TWO tracks are moving opposite to each other, it's called neutral. we can clearly see the abrams steers its tank with two tracks running oppositely, so it called a neutral steer (sorry if my english is bad, im not a native english speaker)

    • @NZobservatory
      @NZobservatory Рік тому +1

      A neutral pivot is when both tracks turn at the same rate but in opposite directions, causing the vehicle to turn without movie away from the dentral axis of that turn. When only one track turns (and the other remains fixed) it's a skid steer.

    • @osmacar5331
      @osmacar5331 Рік тому

      no that's good english, and almost completely correct. the false part is saying that it steers with both tracks, not entirely, if it is in neutral, like it is here, it is both. but at this point i'd just direct you to engineering vids.

      @@9995-q1u To this day, the doctrinal manual still refers to it as neutral steer. (See TC 3-21.60 of 2017). The point of confusion is that with modern transmissions, the selector must be placed in a purpose-designed location, and since "Neutral" was already taken by... well.. neutral, the designers decided to call that position 'pivot'. It wasn't as if it was going to cause confusion with the pivot steer handles such as found on M113s, as the M113s themselves got upgraded with new transmissions.

    Hell, we did it way quicker than that when I was in W Germany in the 2/2 ACR coming up to the QRS site in Bamberg. It was an almost 180 deg turn and we got it down to an art to do it w/o stopping pretty much. Hell, I drifted my Abrams going around one of the corners coming back from the QRS once. I thought it was awesome, the guy in the TC's hatch not so much. LOL! Miss those days, a lot of memories while stationed in W Germany. Toujours Pret!

    A cat bulldozer does the same thing except you press on the brake for the track you want to stop and the opposite track will turn. You can easily do a 360° turn forward or backward.

    • @NZobservatory
      @NZobservatory Рік тому +1

      That's not a neutral pivot. A neutral pivot is when the tracks turn in opposite directions at an identical rate so the vehicle revolves around a fixed _central_ axis. Skid steering causes a vehicle to veer around the axis of the locked track, making a wide(r) turn.

    DATs call it a Neutral Steer, not pivot. It's because you have to put the transmission in Neutral Gear to do it.
    The laud bang is possibly another tank firing. It's hard to be sure, the guy on the turret with the TC could be a range officer, the green flag on top looks like it means the tank is cleared for moving to the firing line to begin a table. Now I was a 12F, modified M60A3 for combat engineer work, and although we did have a 165mm main gun, we didn't do tank qualification in the same way the tankers did. I was looking for a barrel for the .50cal, most gunner ranges would have targets for the .50 but I didn't see it from these angles. I am wondering what's up with the ladder strapped to the turret?

    • @anthonyisraelson8208
      @anthonyisraelson8208 3 роки тому

      It is actually pivot... you’ll notice the tracks move in opposite directions... and yes the loud pop, was a tank on the firing line sending it...

    • @piperp9535
      @piperp9535 3 роки тому +1

      @@anthonyisraelson8208 Maybe in other country's army's they call it pivot steer, but the US Army, they Army I'm retired from, our tankers (DATs, Dumb Assed Tankers), call it Neutral Steer. Now if there are some DATs using slang then be my guest, I really don't give a damned. But the only proper term is Neutral Steer. Do I need to point i tout to you from an FM?

    • @piperp9535
      @piperp9535 3 роки тому +3

      @@anthonyisraelson8208 So, I think we are suffering from a difference in age and equipment. A little investigating shows that we are both correct. For the US Army, prior to the M1 Abrams, the M60 series the transmission had to be placed in Neutral and the term was Neutral Steer. But with the M1, a new transmission, the Abrams would damage it's transmission if the driver tried steering the vehicle while the transmission was in Neutral, and in order to do a Pivot Steer there is a special gear marked P for Pivot that is used. I never served on M1s, and although the US Army manuals, even for older M60s have all been changed to Pivot, this was made necessary because of the M1. The term had to be standardized and therefor, you are correct for current terminology even for old tanks like the ones I served on. I was actually a 12F and served on M728 Combat Engineer Vehicles which were modified M60s.
      I think I posted previously, was a bit snarky, please forgive me for that, I can't seem to find the post to edit it and had to make a new post.

    • @piperp9535

      If you think that's something, they mostly will never get off it unless they just have to. They will sleep on/in it even though they aren't supposed to, they cook and eat on the tank, piss off the tank, some will even shit off it. In the desert, my TC "Tank Commander" insisted on clean underwear, always brought several new plastic bags out and had them stuck in the .50cal ammo tray. He'd usually change them while we were moving, he'd drop down into the turret, slip out of his boots and drop his pants. The old dirty drawers would go flying up out of the hatch and disappear behind us as he put on his fresh pair, and crawled back up into the cupola for another smoke. Yes, we smoked on the tank too, fuck it.

      The driver has a nice place for him self.
      The loader realy has good space, could hold a party there.
      The gunner at least has a chair for him self, ones he turns around he can stare at the commanders crotch.

I rarely eft the drivers whole other then to sleep on the front slope when we weren't in high readiness. We had a large desert tan sprayed cooler with ice resupplied to us and we always had a dozen monsters in there, sodas, and Gatorades. I never went out to the field without my tank carrying all my pog bait, drinks, solar and battery packs, cigarette, tons of snacks and soups, and most importantly a 12 pack of monsters.
