All of that RTV will eat that gasket away. Only apply 2 dabs at the bottom of the timing cover to seal with the bottom of the block.

I have a 99 suburban, I changed the crank I was provided a almost rubber cork like gasket for my timing cover it is about eight times thicker than the factory channel silicone gasket is this normal? Also did u have the rubber gaskets in your bolt holes?

Great video Robert! I’ll be installing a retro-hydraulic roller camshaft soon in a 1969 Camaro 302 . Any chance posting a video on how to properly install a Cloyes timing cover with adjustable cam button and how to set it?

Hope its a firm cast aluminum cover. Take a couple measurements of where a nice big flat section of the cam timing gear is. That will be the location of where you will drill a tap for a 1/8" NPT flush mount plug.
      Install a cam button.
      Take the plug out.
Loosely place the gasket (no goop), and the cover into place, tighten it up a bit.
Push the cam to the back of the engine through the hole you drilled.
Now place a dial indicator into the hole, hitting the gear.
Move the cam forward, against the button, using a soft tipped screw driver from one of the lifter bores.
      Check the indicator.
I think most companies want 0.010" clearance, but check what yours needs.
Add washers, or grind the button till you get what you want for clearance.
Then do final install of your cover and the pipe plug.
      Done!

Do you recommend scuffing the chrome on back side or will the slick surface still seal good?

@@RobMetzgar01 maybe but the Crank pull has to come off for sure. Dropping the pan will deffinetly make it easier

Why even a gasket if you use rtv on both sides? Rtv is only supposed to go on the cover side not the block side.

I have a 350 built by a engine shop that leaks oil all day. They used rtv before gaskets and nothing sealed up

@@chrisrestaino9443 i do not understand why my mechanic put rtv on my differential cover and later i found it stock inside. Also he put shelack on my fuel pump i took it off and much better? I find rtv unnecessary. A fool used rtv as a head gasket it blew on me and i put a head gasket on.

This looks a lot like open heart surgery to me. I like watching you do it but I am not trying it on my own.
