Exactly. Anything that isn’t directly effecting someone in a fight should be allowed as long as it sticks to the only X part. For example lock picking and speech as they are side skills like HMs are but using conjuring wouldn’t be ok here as the challenge is only illusion magic.
The only potions that MIGHT effect gameplay are ones that would have little to no effect in a run like this, those being enhance sorcery, poisons, etc. It would be different if it was a destruction magic run.
My take on how the rules should be. In combat: 1. you can only affect enemies with illusion magic. You cannot use weapons or magic from other schools (alchemy is separate from magic in this). This means, blade, blunt, archery, hand to hand, destruction, restoration, mysticism, conjuration and alteration are all banned. 2. Armor is fine, but shields will not be allowed as autobashing can happen. Better safe than sorry. (Thanks @DORIAN Robinette for pointing that out to me) 3. Potions are fine, you could choose to make some to heal or boost illusion or limit yourself to only using potions you find or buy. As long as the potion isnt causing you to deal damage or affect the enemy, it's fine. 4. Skills that aid combat encounters but dont affect enemies if you are only using illusion, are allowed. Block, light/heavy armor, sneak can be allowed so long as none of them use a perk to affect an enemy. These skills help you stay alive rather than progress. Out of combat: 1. All non combat related skills are allowed in order for gaining neccessary resources. (Like keeping HM pokemon in your other challenges). Movement skills, Mercantile, armorer, sneak, security 2. While you should try to use illusion to boost social encounters, I would allow use of speech wheel when necessary. Basically use illusion skill, then finish them off by playing the speech wheel. Or maybe it's the other way around: use the speech wheel some then charm them. 3. Alchemy is fine for selling potions, since alchemy relies on physical properties of substances, it's not really magic in my book. And since you aren't using weapons, then poisons cant come into play.
I agree. Shouldn't use anything except illusion to effect enemies in combat. The only thing I'd add the the last bit is exploiting power potions to make infinite gold shouldn't be allowed

You asked for some semantic insight, so... *cracks knuckles * Here we go: Semantic Rule #1: Is Alchemy allowed? I would argue that *yes, Alchemy is allowed.* But just as long as you're not using poisons to resolve your conflicts (either by coating your weapons or reverse-pickpocketing them (yes, you can do such a thing in this series)) or your hand-crafted potions to enhance your survivability when Alchemy isn't the challenge object in itself, only the sale of these items would be permitted. Like this, you can produce ample coin from selling potions and poisons as well as control when you level up if you choose it as a major or minor skill. The loophole I'll point out here is that, while you wouldn't be allowed to use your own potions, it's perfectly fine to buy/find potions and use those. That way, you can still benefit from potions, but they won't be completely OP. Oh, before we move on, did you manage to escape the master's vigilance? Semantic Rule #2: Is Lock Picking allowed? Unless the challenge specifically states that you can't lock pick, I would argue that *yes, Lock Picking is allowed.* The skill is non-combatitive in nature, and really can't lead to any harm for any particular challenge run, just as long as you don't abuse it to resolve every single locked door/gate/chest/whathaveyou in your way. I know very well how laughably easy Elder Scrolls lock picking minigames are, and just how easy it is to accidentally find yourself at level 100 Lock Picking Skill when you're supposed to be role-playing a barbarian. So if there's a key, switch, or some quest trigger that's supposed to unlock whatever is locked that you need to get through/into, try that first. Also, did you manage to escape the master's vigilance? With those out of the way, I loved watching/listening to this and you can guarantee that I'll watch more Oblivion challenges if you do, and Skyrim if you decide to take a crack at that. While I'll always hold Pokémon as a fun RPG series to play, The Elder Scrolls is definitely my favourite despite its many flaws and quirks. If I may be so bold as to suggest a challenge, might I request a Pickpocketing Only challenge? As in, using the very mechanic I mentioned before of reverse-pickpocketing poisons into your enemy's inventory to damage them as opposed to actual traditional physical or magical combat. Medieval Chemical Warfare if you would. XD And just to know, did you manage to escape the master's vigilance?
i'm not a gAMER OR ANYTHING but i do remember playing oblivion when I was maybe? 12? 13? on a friend's computer, and while I had no clue what was going on or what I was doing, it was fun anyway! basically, watching this unlocked memories I wasn't aware I had
lol. I remember inviting a friend of mine over to my house, and after we ran out of things to do I tried to get him to try oblivion. He was so confused but he found the character customization to be pretty funny with how you could make an absolute abomination of a wacky looking character. I’ve moved away since then, and I have no good way of contacting him, but your story reminded me of him.
when it comes to rules: I'd say for simplicity's sake: everything is allowed including leveling skills as long as you don't directly damage a moving entity yourself. Blocking is ok if it does no damage. Speechcraft, jumping really high, using other schools of magic, all allowed, just no damaging enemies/NPCs directly in any way.
I got really excited when I saw this yesterday. Not only do I really like Oblivion, but I was excited that you were dipping your toes into something else just for fun. Really hopeful that you enjoyed this challenge and I can't wait for anything you might have in store for the future.
@@MahDryBread I anticipate some (which in all fairness is a given), but this positivity from the premiere alone is telling majority of your fans back you up. Keep plugging away as you do, dude; I'll definitely be checking this out myself tomorrow.
Man, this is an MDB classic. Just came back to rewatch for the first time since the upload, and it’s soooo fun hearing how incredulous you get at Oblivion shenanigans - and evident how much you were enjoying yourself.
Invisibility in Oblivion was totally overpowered back when I was playing it on the 360. If you time the cast right as you interact wth things, you can enter doors, and instantly be invisible again on the other side. Same with just about any other interactable. I remember my Illusion skill hitting 100 long before any other skill because, as you said, running past hordes of powerful creatures that never even knew you were in their oblivion tower, totally satisfying.
This reminded me of the time I killed all the assassins that tried killing the Emperor, and when the last died that game just kills the emperor anyways because he has to die.
Mdb, hope this helps with the algorithm. Please never be afraid to take a break if you need to. You may worry about not being able to come back to the same audience, but if you burn yourself out, you'll lose that audience anyway. I personally love what you do at the moment, but want to make sure you are happy and healthy. You know yourself better than anyone else, so only you know if you need to take a break or whatever. Much love, and which fossil did you take?
The joy and delight you show throughout this video put a big smile on my face. It reminds me of when I would play this game with my little sister, cracking jokes and trying to make her laugh. Thanks for the nostalgia trip! I hope to see more stuff that makes you this excited to play. As for the rules, alchemy and lockpicking should be fine. They’re the equivalent of Pokémon items and HM slaves: needed to progress the story, but not run-breaking.
@@MahDryBread One idea for future oblivion challenges, you could use the fossil joke for daedric artifacts. When Sean bean asks you to bring him an artifact, you ask the comments to guess which artifact, comments, algorithm etc.

I love elder scrolls!!! Side note, i just returned to college after 3 years away. As a full time banker and a student it can be exhausting. I like to play your videos as background noise while studying. Sometimes it helps to have background noise, i learned that after suffering a guy that played weird techno music in college dorm room lobby and as a banker i always hear background music or conversations.
I used to think I enjoyed Mah-Dry-Bread because of the Pokemon challenges, but after hearing in one of his videos how he had so much fun making this one I was like "okay I'll check it out." Boy was I surprised I have never even played oblivion, but this video was awesome so I think what is important is he enjoys the content he makes and that is what makes him so enjoyable to watch.
You likely won't see it, because Destiny Visage is a tier 3 spell that gives invisibility for 35 seconds. Jokes aside, yeah, should be interesting. If I had to guess, first bit of the run would be using Charm spells to level up to tier 2 to get access to Command spells to make creatures and humans fight for you, and Touch of Fear to demoralize opponents to sneak by. After that, Destiny Visage to sneak by higher level enemies once you get tier 3. At tier 4, Black Winter will likely be the main source of personal damage, Dominates to get creatures and humans to fight for you, Fearful Gaze to demoralize stronger enemies. That's what I would do. Granted, I likely have way more time to do the grinding, but I'd imagine it shouldn't be that difficult if you just abuse Charm effects constantly.
The question is: "Can you beat Oblivion with illusion magic?" You're trying to answer that through any means possible, alchemy is just another game mechanic that can increase the odds of the answer being yes. Just don't exploit it, there are some seriously stupid exploits you can do in Skyrim with alchemy. Not sure if that's the case in Oblivion, but honestly as long as it's not exploiting, as long as you're using illusion magic to beat an enemy or progress through the game, I personally couldn't care less. And I think a lot of people would agree with that.
Okay, he mentioned that Command Creature doesn't work on Goblins, and the topic of whether or not Goblins are 'people' is actually kind of an interesting one. The short answer is whoever made the spell is racist, Goblins are almost for sure people. There's a bit more (down below), but that's the main thrust of it. tl;dr: Goblins are only 'not people' because Elves (and as a result also Humans and Beastfolk) are racists assholes, they're just as much of 'people' as Argonians and Khajiit. Basically, Goblins are a lot like the Beastfolk (Argonians and Khajiit) in that, unlike the Elves and Men, they are true natives to Tamriel, having been present on Summerset before the Elves (at this time a single species called the Aldmer) were. The first elves actually traded with with the Goblins of the Summerset Isles before eventually deciding that they weren't loyal to the Elven King and going to war with them. The Goblins of Summerset were agrarian, and were known for taming creatures - definitely a proper civilization. That first war basically ends people ever viewing Goblins as 'civilized' creatures again. There's a couple other times we see more organized Goblin warbands, but their history after that point is mostly limited to small tribes ekeing out a meager existence beyond the periphery of the 'civilized' world, with occasional (and usually exploitative) interactions with Man and Mer such as being trained (maybe unwillingly?) as bodyguards/soldiers, taken as slaves, or working with bandits. Goblins have a religion (they worship a version of the Orc god Malacath or Hircine, typically). They have their own language. However, anyone who looks into Goblin 'civilization' is considered a cook - their language is 'just gibberish' and they're just a bunch of stupid monsters. Except obviously they can tame and breed other creatures and have the other trappings of civilization. Basically, Goblins 'aren't people' the way that native Africans 'weren't people' to Europeans who were exploring (and exploiting) the region. Except worse - the reason the Goblins are in such a downtrodden state is because they have been exploited and actively curtailed by other races, and then that same downtrodden state is used as an excuse to justify those actions. Elder Scrolls lore is super neat.
I think Khajiit are actually elves that were changed by one of the gods (Azura, maybe? I don't remember) and now has a strong connection to Lorkhan. And I'm pretty sure the Hist, and thus the Argonians as we know them, aren't native to Tamriel.
@@TheTdroid The Khajiit are not elves, rather they are formed from the same formless ooze as the Bosmer (wood elves) IF you believe their own legends on the matter. There are also sources which say they are aboriginal to Tamriel, though those things aren't mutually exclusive so it's likely that both could be true. Also, if you consider only races descended from the Aldmer as true Mer, there's an argument that Bosmer might actually not be elves, either - just things shaped to look and act like elves. Of course, at a certain point if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, and produces true offspring with other ducks... well, then regardless of origin you just have a duck.
The great thing about The Elder Scrolls is that even a couple decades after original release, people are STILL passionate enough about the series to have intimate familiarity with the lore like this. You're the real MVP in this comment section, honestly.
I would be more intrested in wether goblins have white souls or black soul to be honest. It probably would weight in a but on the discussion, considering the Falmer.
“Burma.” Is... is he referring to BRUMA? Also regarding semantics, I think as long as you don’t inflict damage directly it doesn’t ruin the run. Lock picking, potion making are all parts of the vanilla game. Honestly, if I was doing the run I would have used a shield or something.
i may or may not have watched this 3 times now.... i wish i knew enough about elder scrolls to suggest a challenge but i hope you do more regardless, this was a joy start to finish! comments are good for the youtube algorithm
The Under King is one of the 6 kings from Elder Scroll II: Daggerfell (Might be Daggerfall). He's Tiber Septim's Grand Wizard and the createe of the Septim Totem, which powers the Neumidium. (I dont know how it's spelled)
Never played this game, and even though I was mostly lost when you were explaining game mechanics, I enjoyed the video! I was excited about you being so excited to play! Pokemon is great, but it's fun to have non-Pokemon challenges sometimes.
One of my favorite playthroughs of this was with a stealth build who used illusion and conjuration. It was fun to sneak into a bandit lair, cast an aoe Frenzy spell on a bunch of them, and just watch them slaughter each other before mopping up the leftovers. It was also fun to enchant a weapon with Fear for a one second duration and just yo-yo enemies until they keel over.
Ohhh an illusion challenge! This is the ONE school of magic I was never any good with so this makes it more exciting! Edit: Alchemy, Lockpicking, and even Enchanting I would allow, as those are more passive stats. Alchemy helps you make potions you are using anyway from other merchants, lockpicking is a must in any Elder Scrolls game, and even Enchanting as you can customize in bonuses to your armor, even just for the school of magic you are using. You can also enchant just to sell items at higher prices for the sake of avoiding unnecessary farming, I LOVED this challenge! Also, RIP Baurus....
As someone who grew up with this game when it came out, it hurts so much when he said "Burma" instead of "Bruma". Funny thing is i used to say that too so i cant really judge

XD
And just to know, did you manage to escape the master's vigilance?

i'm not a gAMER OR ANYTHING but i do remember playing oblivion when I was maybe? 12? 13? on a friend's computer, and while I had no clue what was going on or what I was doing, it was fun anyway! basically, watching this unlocked memories I wasn't aware I had
ᶻᵉᵉᵇᵒ I was eight when I watched my oldest brother play it. Absolutely loved it

Just like me absolutely destroying little kids in dodgeball. Same thing
when it comes to rules: I'd say for simplicity's sake: everything is allowed including leveling skills as long as you don't directly damage a moving entity yourself.

Damn, if he wasn't already dead I would've reported you for murder.
I really hope that you made the Adoring Fan the Elder Scrolls version of Youngster Joey.
I didn't but I wish I could! I'm not sure I'd ever get that much fame during a run
@@MahDryBread Maybe just for shits and giggles you do it one time, then recycle the same footage over and over and never acknowledge it 😂

I used to think I enjoyed Mah-Dry-Bread because of the Pokemon challenges, but after hearing in one of his videos how he had so much fun making this one I was like "okay I'll check it out." Woah was not expecting this. Can’t wait to see!
17:05 This was the best part of the whole thing. No offense to your other wonderful jokes everywhere but that single "AH!" slayed my sides.

Alternate title: can i escape the masters vigilance with ONLY illusion magic?
Every time I played, I spammed candlelight 24/7 to level up my illusion
The question is: "Can you beat Oblivion with illusion magic?"
You're trying to answer that through any means possible, alchemy is just another game mechanic that can increase the odds of the answer being yes.
You think alchemy’s bad? Try this on for size ua-cam.com/video/nQG9EHYFT2k/v-deo.html
@@CryptidHunter13 a racist duck?
The great thing about The Elder Scrolls is that even a couple decades after original release, people are STILL passionate enough about the series to have intimate familiarity with the lore like this.
You're the real MVP in this comment section, honestly.
I would be more intrested in wether goblins have white souls or black soul to be honest. It probably would weight in a but on the discussion, considering the Falmer.
I really like MDB's general tone of excitement on this video and really speaks volumes on how fun of a time he had.
Have you heard of the High Elves?
“Burma.”
Is... is he referring to BRUMA?
Also regarding semantics, I think as long as you don’t inflict damage directly it doesn’t ruin the run. Lock picking, potion making are all parts of the vanilla game. Honestly, if I was doing the run I would have used a shield or something.
I think he's referring to Bulma ʕ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°ʔ
Yes, the southeast Asian country that is located in the north of cyrodill
Maybe next time his Pokémon mind will seep into the voiceover and he'll call the city Burmy instead.
No, obviously the country of Myanmar xD

No wonder UA-cam’s recommending this episode this video is hilarious.
