Alsarah & The Nubatones: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- When singer Alsarah left her native Sudan, she was just a child who'd shown an interest in music. She's said it served as her coping mechanism during a subsequent transition to life here in the U.S. That passion led her to a university degree in ethnomusicology.
It also drew her to musicians who were passionate about the intersection of culture, music and migration. Together, their one-of-a-kind expression has been called "East African retro pop." But that tag only scratches the surface: In their hands, the music pulses, breathes and comes alive with a mix of tradition and contemporary influences.
Alsarah and her band The Nubatones mesmerize and enchant in this performance behind Bob Boilen's Desk. They undoubtedly opened new worlds for more than a few who saw the performance live, so it's a pleasure to share it with the world.

HOW I LOVE THE SUDANESE PENTATONIC SCALE
What is different from the conventional pentatonic?
Beautiful music.
theagbaman, YES!
I love their voices so much
Aaaaah, I saw it on NPR's website and was wondering why it's notyet on youtube, much easier to share =P
Anyways, amazing, I first discovered Alsarah thanks to her collaboration album with Debruit which is amazing and amongst my most listened album ever, and well this new album with her usual band is amazing too. Fulani is my fav song, as always great music selection for NPR's tiny desk =).
Fabulous! Thank you!
very pretty stuff thank you for sharing!
The harmonic interplay between the two women's voices is hypnotic. Love this.
I was thinking just that! It's incredible!
I come back to this video over and over again for this exact reason
instant goosebumps
This is incredible 💜✨
شوفو بالعربي للسودايين اول مره اشوف سودانية بتمثل احساس البت السودانية ولهجة الخطابة للسودانيين بالفهم العالمي

Damn....that's intense. What's the name of the weird guitar? Where are these cats from? Sounds American, but I'm high and don't know...I'm gonna make cookies.

Jack Black.
starbucks?
East african women are so exotic looking
east african women don't have a partiular look, Lupita Nyong'o is also east african..
its just my opinion man
TheOtherSun sure, but I'm east african and majority look like regular african women..
I cringe when people describe others as 'exotic'. It comes from a good place but it sounds offensive.
as an East African person i resent this comment. what is exotic?? different? the first human lived in East Africa so as far as im considered we are the prototype for all human phenotypes. And YES my people are beautiful. say that instead of exotic...
I love her accent, her speaking voice and her singing voice..What a pleasure to listen to her creative music!
@NPR Music i really love it to here my arabic language around this tiny desk thanks 😍 peace and love 💙

I'd truly thankful for the opportunity to hear this ensemble, great instrumentation and vocal prowess (which I didn't understand). I really dig what I perceive the world music vibe, I look forward to spending more time with their music.

not a physician, but has the lump at the base of Alsarah's neck always been there? I watched a video from 4 years ago to check and I'm not sure if it's just age or something to check on with her thyroid/something related? Just a note!
Hi jumana
Yes you are right, it is harmless condtion of thyroid called thyroglossal ( glossal_ tongue) cyst , it is something related to early journey of the gland toward its future postion at the neck
Their skin look like shiny bronze. so perfect!
