I own all the Cohen Borthers works and just in the past 2 weeks i rewatched raising arizona. Ive never enjoyed the film but everytime you watch a film youre a different person than the last time you saw it...well i still dont like it. Its more annoying than funny and the narration kills the pace of the film completely.
Raising Arizona, much like the Cohen’s later film Barton Fink, are two films people either love or don’t get at all. I fall into the latter category on both. Raising Arizona was too manic and quirky for my tastes, where as Barton Fink was too boring and quirky.

I watched Raising Arizona in a theater all by myself while everyone else was watching Lethal Weapon, they must have thought I was crazy because I couldn't stop laughing. Both movies were great.
Raising Arizona: 1. Multilayered comedic masterpiece. 2. Outstanding cast and performances. Best thing Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter ever did. 3. Unforgettable dialogue: "They were jammies, they had Yodas and s*** on 'em. " "Not unless round's funny." "Just get down on the floor there, young missy." "My fi-ance left me." "We released ourselves on our own recognizance". "Okay, then." etc, etc. 4. The lone rider of the apocalypse. 5. Extremely touching ending that always chokes me up. 6. The most adorable kidnapped baby in movie history. Sorry, but Roger Ebert could be an absolute arrogant jacka** at times.
I didn’t even know there was another movie called Heat, beside the one that everyone thinks of first, and is an outstanding movie! For Lethal Weapon and Raising Arizona, my liking of them has honestly cooled over the years. The Die Hard franchise is honestly far better than the Lethal Weapon franchise, and for Raising Arizona, I don’t mind goofy, but it was like obnoxious in it’s goofiness.
IKR?? I’m in my 40s and never even knew there was another movie named Heat! (Other than the one people immediately think of and is one of the best films from the 90s).
They both got stuff wrong all the time, but Ebert’s negative opinion of Raising Arizona baffles me. I feel sorry for someone who doesn’t get the humor that is so brilliantly done here, also with one of Nick Cage’s best performances.
@@Nathan-gd7xq He said it himself that film opinions are ultimately subjective, so that’s true. It’s all subjective and subjectively I believe that his being an informed opinion is subjectively in question and his opinion about this film is wrong… subjectively.

If you listen carefully at the very end of the review, Ebert's final words were "a delightful surprise". That basically rules out the oft referenced "house exploding" scene since it's highly unlikely he found a startling explosion to be delightful. Maybe if he was a pyromaniac or if explosions in the movies weren't a thing back then, then ok. Otherwise, no. Therefore, it has to be Riggs and "The Building Guy" jumping off together and then landing on the tarp at the bottom, which we don't actually see until right before they land on it. Hence, the "delightful" surprise that they were unhurt.

Obviously Lethal Weapon has to be loved...but again Ebert has knocked me with his comments about Raising Arizona. Is one of the best 80s comedies

What was the surprise in Lethal Weapon? I've seen it several times and I don't recall anything in particular that that was surprising.
What surprise were they talking about in Lethal Weapon? I haven’t seen it in years and I can’t think of one off hand.
In the after credits scene, when the giant mechanical spider comes out of the desert and kills everyone.
I asked myself the same question. Last time i watched it on December 2017 but I don't remember any surprise🤔

I love the Coen Brothers, but Ebert was right - they were still finding their way with wildly uneven Raising Arizona.
I agree the tone is all over the place. Still had some pretty funny moments, every scene with Goodman and Forsythe is hilarious

Yep. Comes off like a student film on a higher budget. Used to love it when I was in high school but rewatched it a few years back. Saw the flaws.
