These are car settings you can change while you drive, and having quick access to them lets you make adjustments on the fly, without taking your other hand off the steering wheel. Once you’re happy with your layout, it’s time to unlock the potential of your controller, let’s get into it. 🟢 Setting up your Steering A racing wheel gives you detailed control of your steering, though you can also get good response from your controller with a few adjustments. In the Calibration menu you’ll see three sliders at the top for steering: your Deadzone, Linearity and Saturation. There’s also a secret fourth setting, which we’ll get to in a moment. Before we change anything, we must first get a sense for how the controller behaves, so open the Testing option and gently flick the Left Stick with your finger. If the Steering number doesn’t return to zero when the stick bounces back, you’ll need to increase your Steering Deadzone. A setting of 1 or 2 usually does the job, but if you’ve got a worn-out controller you might need to put it higher. This setting helps stop your car from wandering about on the straights when you’re not trying to turn it, so it’s an important one to get right. Next, let’s ensure you’re getting the full range of motion from your controller. Open the Test again and turn your steering all the way to the left and right. If it hits 100 on both sides, you’re good to go, but if it doesn’t you should increase your Saturation setting a little. The third setting, your Steering Linearity, is one that can make a big difference. When it’s set to zero, the input is scaled in a linear fashion, push the stick 10% and it gives you 10% steering input, push it 20% to get 20% and so-on. Increasing this will give you more control over the initial steering input, forcing you to tilt the stick more in order to get the same amount of steering, you had before. Doing this makes it harder to control the higher end of steering input however. That being said, the game does dampen controller inputs at high speed to help keep the cars under control, so it’s not a critical issue. I would recommend setting this to 50, as that gives you plenty of control over the all-important low steering ranges, letting you make minor adjustments to your steering with ease. For the fourth setting you need to back out of this menu. Head into Vibration and Force Feedback, and scroll all the way to the bottom to change Maximum Wheel Rotation. While this is a useful setting for wheel users, it’s essentially the “secret sauce” for pad players. Lowering this setting appears to take the edge off of your steering, particularly at low speed, making it easier to take tight corners like the Monaco Hairpin. For now, set it to 270 and see how it feels. It’ll take a bit of getting used to, so you may need to do a few races with it before experimenting with higher or lower values. You may also want to try it with zero Steering Linearity, as the two settings interact with each other. Right now I’m using 270, and a Linearity of 50. If you’re on PC you may not be able to change your wheel rotation on a controller, so instead I would recommend leaving your Steering Linearity at 50, and calling it a day. Our next settings are available to everyone however, helping us to drive without assists. Before that though, hit the Like Button if I’ve helped you out, and let me know what your settings look like. 🟢 Pulling the Triggers The steering was one of the most important things to get right, and as you can see it was rather complicated. Our Throttle and Brake are far simpler to take care of however, so let’s do that now. Head back into Calibration and look at the Throttle and Brake settings, they work in the same way so let’s handle them in pairs. The Deadzone setting tells the game how hard you need to pull on a trigger before it does anything to the car. Much like with the steering Deadzone, if these are above zero when you let the triggers go, the car won’t behave properly, so increase the setting until they do. Likewise, if you find your hands resting on the triggers when you’re not trying to press them, having a little Deadzone can stop you accidentally hitting the brake or accelerator, when you least expect it. For Saturation, open the Test once more and pull the triggers down all the way. If they’re hitting 100 already then great, but if they’re not then you need to increase this setting. Next, we have the Linearity Settings. By increasing these we make it easier to apply small amounts of brake or throttle, something you need to do when you’re driving without ABS, or Traction Control. In my time with F1 2021 so far, I have found that it’s much easier to drive without assists than it was in F1 2020. However, setting both of these to 50 will help most players. You don’t need as much control over the high-end as you do the low-end, and this will go a long way towards helping you switch those Assists off. Another part of the puzzle comes with your Vibration settings, so let’s jump back into that menu one more time, to complete our setup. 🟢 Feeling the Road Your Vibration and Force Feedback settings play a key role in your performance, as they help communicate what the tyres are doing, when they touch the road. Combining these settings with what we see and hear will allow us to react faster, and push our limits. The Strength setting takes care of the overall vibration level. To get the most detailed feedback from your controller, turn it all the way to maximum. Now, when you drive you will feel the left trigger vibrate when you’re about to lock the brakes, and the right trigger will do the same if you spin the rear wheels too much. The rumble motors in the controller handles will also let you know how the rear wheels are behaving. You can really feel the grip coming from the car. I’m using an Xbox Series X controller which has great triggers, however the PS5’s Haptic Triggers are even better, giving you even more control over the car. Unfortunately, most third-party controllers don’t have vibrating triggers, nor does the DualShock 4. With the Strength maximised we now have finer control over the three sliders beneath it. The titles are self-explanatory, however this isn’t a simple case of setting everything to the maximum. What you will need to try out here is the ratio between each slider, so that you get the right kinds of information from your driving. For example, you may want the on-track effects to be rather strong, but for the car to feel loose when you clip the grass. Play about with these force-feedback settings, until you find what works best on-track, for you. When it comes to Force-Feedback, it is a more complicated topic for wheel users, however I can help with that too. I have a wheel settings guide on my channel, which will help you get started for now. In the meantime, thanks for reading, and I wish you the best of luck, in your next race.
All I could say is THANKS! This is very helpful since I cannot use a wheel as I am disabled and cannot use my feet so THANKS! I Love all your other videos!

WAIT WHAT? Lower wheel rotation influences pad, too? I had no idea! Thanks, PJ! I thought I knew everything about the F1 game, but today I learned something new.
thanks to your guide how to drive without traction control im now able to put much faster lap time with it right now im struggling with driving without ABS and racing line, gotta keep on trying
I bought yesterday a controller to play many games, but I can't downshift in f1 2021. There isn't any problem when playing f1 2018 with the same settings. Apart from this, great video!
Also the wheel rotation setting i looking forward to trying as the corner at Monaco you were referring to i have never been able to get right .I have been known stop at that corner and reverse just to get round it ! Highly embarrassing when there are 10 cars queuing behind you !
Yup, got a lot of comments about that setting last year, and after watching a few videos (big thanks, you guys know who you are) I felt it was a good thing to add.
You could not even imagine how much these settings helped me to improve my driving tonight! Just have one question, what does the brake bias and differential settings mean/do? Thanks!
Look up my ABS/Traction guides, they go into more detail on each of those settings 🙂 You have to use slightly different numbers in 2021, but the theory is the same.
I'm losing 4 secs a lap against top 3 with same cars I hope this helps because me and my m8s can't figure it out and are 10s of each other but in multiplayer almost 3 to 4 secs which is not right so thanks and I hope it helps this was well explained and nicely presented.
I'm always questioning my controller settings in every game (especially racing games). Happy to see there's a guide explaining them and also providing tips. You just earned a sub! Looking forward to see similar content on other racing games too, Thanks!
My settings and binds are exactly the same as 2020, aside from MFD option for fuel mix. No linearity, deadzone or saturation on anything as of now, though that may change. I like it to feel responsive and I know that if I had linearity (which I have tried in the past) it confuses me. Instead, I use the old faithful, stick pushed up and use the shell of the controller to guide me when I need to be precise. Gears X/B, Overtake Y, Look Back RS in, Diff RS left/right, Brake bias RS up/down and that's pretty much the most important parts.
Very nice guide indeed. I am on PC with PS4 controller and Xbox Controller. i dont have this Wheel Rotation setting on enhanced mode on. how can i put that on on PC ?
Can you please make a video on differential and front brake bias? Like what it is and how to use it effectively? I’m new and your videos are helping me.
I honestly didn't get the "Maximum wheel rotation" part. In the game it says that it's "the amount of rotation in degrees the wheel will allow when going full left to full right". Increasing the value should increase the wheel rotation span, meaning higher angles and therefore easier rotation. However you explain that it's actually the opposite! Can you clarify it a little bit? Thanks and awesome video!
To be honest it's a bit of "black magic" when it comes to the controller. I initially thought it wouldn't affect controllers at all, since there's no effort in turning the stick each way. On a wheel it's meant to lock the rotation your physical wheel can do, so you feel the bump stops at the end of rotations. For some reason it works though, I really can't explain why.
I love my wheel but had to check out the ps5 pad as I heard huge things anything the new dualsense on this game and man oh man I wasn't disappointed the feedback is great the right trigger even gets that snag in it when the tires lock or ypu start losing grip you know it and I just turned all assists off when playing I haven't had an issue I here some people are idk I am just not and I will say you can legit catch slides with the ps5 controller insane right? Lol you can def tell it was designed for a wheel and the ps5 controller I wish everyone had one tbh it does bring more imerssion for controller players for sure lol
I haven't tried the PS5 pad but I hear it's quite good. If you're playing on PC however, Xbox would be a better choice as it's more compatible across all your games.
hi, thank you, question please... do i have to be in expert mode to make these adjustments? i already cant make it through monaco on beginner lol, thanks!
I'm not sure what to use for my controller. When I try to turn the car. The car doesn't turn much at all. I push my thumbstick left or right but it doesn't turn the car much. Can anyone help?
not sure if this will help anyone but I personally hold my analogue forward at all times when racing (in order to have a more realistic steering feel as i found if i didnt "roll" the analogue in a circular motion especially when straightening out the car would just snap back and id spin out
It's all about ratios and what information you want from the car. I like everything on maximum, and I think on PS4 at least you should definitely max On-Track effects 9since you don't have vibrating triggers). Off-Track and Rumble, up to you.
05:41 This kind of feedbacks is completely missing from PS5 controller. I used play F1 2020 on my series S , I get this kind of feedback. Now, I got this game on ps5 am NOT ABLE to make any sense what's the controller trying to tell/feel about car, the feedback mechanism completely different. Suggest you to try this once if you get a chance on ps5. Trust me the behaviour of controller is completely different.
Beginner Q, when braking (and accelerating for that matter), is it sensitive to how much you hold down the trigger? So brakes will slam if you hold it down completely, and holding it down 75% will be a slightly less intense brake?
i have a question, i bought a new ps4 controller and i wonder why the steering is so fast and jerky... i cannot find settings to calibrate it like on f1 2020, help?

F1 2021 Controller Settings Guide
🟢 Intro
When you use a controller in F1 2021, you’ll have a great time, as it’s easy to drive with confidence.
With a few tweaks it can be made even better, and I can help with that, so let’s get started.
🟢 The Fundamentals
To adjust your controller, head to Settings and then Controls, Vibration and Force Feedback.
Before we get going let’s quickly hop into the Generic Settings.
The setting to look out for here is the ERS Overtake Mode.
If you would rather hold the button down when deploying your battery, you can choose that here.
With that set up, head back to the main screen, and edit a profile.
This is where the magic happens.
You’ll be presented with your current button layout.
The default is fine for more players, but if you’re used to a layout from a different game, you can change that here.
One thing you should try out is to unbind the Look Around commands, as we’ll use the right stick for something else.
Instead, scroll all the way down to MFD Shortcuts. Assign up/down to Differential, and left/right to your Brake Bias.
These are car settings you can change while you drive, and having quick access to them lets you make adjustments on the fly, without taking your other hand off the steering wheel.
Once you’re happy with your layout, it’s time to unlock the potential of your controller, let’s get into it.
🟢 Setting up your Steering
A racing wheel gives you detailed control of your steering, though you can also get good response from your controller with a few adjustments.
🟢 Pulling the Triggers
The steering was one of the most important things to get right, and as you can see it was rather complicated.

You don’t need as much control over the high-end as you do the low-end, and this will go a long way towards helping you switch those Assists off.
Another part of the puzzle comes with your Vibration settings, so let’s jump back into that menu one more time, to complete our setup.
🟢 Feeling the Road
Your Vibration and Force Feedback settings play a key role in your performance, as they help communicate what the tyres are doing, when they touch the road.
Combining these settings with what we see and hear will allow us to react faster, and push our limits.
The Strength setting takes care of the overall vibration level.

No problem 👍
Superb content thanks so much for this
Wow! Amazing video. You are a great help. Thank you!! Awesome work.
Thanks for the help!! Really appreciate it
Not even a controller player. Just here because I love your videos. Gotta help get that engagement up too!
#EngagementGang
Thank you Bro, you helped me so much!!!!!!
Thank you for this Video, very helpful especially for me as a beginner (last F1 Game I played was F1 2015)
Greetings from Germany✌
I’m actually a lot faster on wheel than I am on controller but I tried controller out and these settings were buttery. Good stuff thank you.
The difference from a PS4 controller to a PS5 controller is insane. It feels like a different game
What’s better ps4 or ps5 controller?
@@CurvyBobbie I'd assume the PS5 controller
WAIT WHAT? Lower wheel rotation influences pad, too? I had no idea! Thanks, PJ! I thought I knew everything about the F1 game, but today I learned something new.
I learned it from another channel a few months ago, it's rather handy 🙂
@@PJTierney it does not come up on my screen in the settings, the wheel rotation?
@@youngbrooks9157 same here
Amazing settings love this guide i always have car slipped to fast or drift now i can steer better too no slipped anymore thanks love to you 😀
Glad it helped 🙂
new here, thanks a lot...deserve my sub
Thank you so much!
thanks to your guide how to drive without traction control im now able to put much faster lap time with it right now im struggling with driving without ABS and racing line, gotta keep on trying
Night and day difference after using your settings. Thank you
Finally I can play F1 thanks
I greatly appreciate the feedback instead of the video being "Ha, just get a wheel. Controller sucks lolz"
Racing is for everyone, that's something I've always believed in 😀
Thanks man ✌️🏆
Thanks bro .. u heroes ..
I bought yesterday a controller to play many games, but I can't downshift in f1 2021. There isn't any problem when playing f1 2018 with the same settings. Apart from this, great video!
super guide PJ
Thank you!
This was very helpful. If you have two controllers can you set them up differently?
Wow, what a difference this made for me.
An absolute lifesaver
Also the wheel rotation setting i looking forward to trying as the corner at Monaco you were referring to i have never been able to get right .I have been known stop at that corner and reverse just to get round it ! Highly embarrassing when there are 10 cars queuing behind you !
Yup, got a lot of comments about that setting last year, and after watching a few videos (big thanks, you guys know who you are) I felt it was a good thing to add.
You could not even imagine how much these settings helped me to improve my driving tonight! Just have one question, what does the brake bias and differential settings mean/do? Thanks!
Look up my ABS/Traction guides, they go into more detail on each of those settings 🙂
You have to use slightly different numbers in 2021, but the theory is the same.
@@PJTierney I will take a look on that video. Thanks for these videos, they are truly amazing!
I'm losing 4 secs a lap against top 3 with same cars I hope this helps because me and my m8s can't figure it out and are 10s of each other but in multiplayer almost 3 to 4 secs which is not right so thanks and I hope it helps this was well explained and nicely presented.
Also this is my first f1 game and I'm loving it but could you please do a video of engine settings in the career mode I'm new to all this 🙂
The tip with the 270 degrees steering was the best.
I'm always questioning my controller settings in every game (especially racing games). Happy to see there's a guide explaining them and also providing tips.
You just earned a sub!
Looking forward to see similar content on other racing games too,
Thanks!
Awesome!! I always found playing F1 on a pad rather than a wheel, having better control on steering and keeping the car steady!
Gonna try this soon, hopefully it will help me avoid those curbs of death! 😆
Kerb of DOOM!
Can you please make a video on differential and front brake bias? Like what it is and how to use it effectively? I’m new and your videos are helping me.
Planning things soon 🙂
In the meantime check out my F1 2020 videos where I explain them a bit more.
@@PJTierney will do and looking forward to it!
Good video! Any tips on how to do the Japan /USA "s" on controller?
lovely ol irish voice, good vid lad
Ah sure, tis grand talking about eff wan.
@@PJTierney lmaoooo
Thanks so much for this, I was getting so frustrated at being considerably slower than the AI on straights, turns out my R2 is faulty
Ikr I had the same problem my R2, when tested was only registering about 78% throttle so I just increased the saturation
You are an absolute legend
Thank you 😀
What a difference this makes. Everyone who watches this. TRY IT!!!!!! thank you
Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you
What is the song playing at the 4:30 time?
It's from the UA-cam Audio Library 🙂
Cold Water / Patrick Patrikios
Did you connect your controller via DS4-Windows or with Sream or did you choose a other way?
I recorded this on Xbox.
On Steam I use an Xbox controller too so no DS4 issues.
@@PJTierney ah ok thank you
I love my wheel but had to check out the ps5 pad as I heard huge things anything the new dualsense on this game and man oh man I wasn't disappointed the feedback is great the right trigger even gets that snag in it when the tires lock or ypu start losing grip you know it and I just turned all assists off when playing I haven't had an issue I here some people are idk I am just not and I will say you can legit catch slides with the ps5 controller insane right? Lol you can def tell it was designed for a wheel and the ps5 controller I wish everyone had one tbh it does bring more imerssion for controller players for sure lol
Triggers with feedback are amazing for racing games, it's why I played on Xbox all these years 😀
it takes getting used to but overall good thx
Hello! Do you think the game is better with the pad of the ps5 or xbox?
I haven't tried the PS5 pad but I hear it's quite good.
If you're playing on PC however, Xbox would be a better choice as it's more compatible across all your games.
Cool thx
What would you say is the best wheel rotation for controller. And what force feedback settings do you use
I am a newbie just did what he said what great settings I must say tho I have to keep traction on since I can’t control it as of now
hi, thank you, question please... do i have to be in expert mode to make these adjustments? i already cant make it through monaco on beginner lol, thanks!
For controller? You can be in any mode.
@@PJTierney thanks, cant locate the calibration options for some reason.. notice when i jump up in modes, more options appear.
I'm not sure what to use for my controller. When I try to turn the car. The car doesn't turn much at all. I push my thumbstick left or right but it doesn't turn the car much. Can anyone help?
Hi pj great tutorial would these settings work on F1 2020 ?
The number system is different but the theory is the exact same. I also have a 2020 guide.
@@PJTierney ok pj thanks 😊
@[•¡AidenF1TV¡•] ua-cam.com/video/DDPq9FrrP5U/v-deo.html
PJ will you be doing a video for 22?
Not doing F1 22 videos on this channel, but there are tutorials I worked on on the official channel 🙂
not sure if this will help anyone but I personally hold my analogue forward at all times when racing (in order to have a more realistic steering feel as i found if i didnt "roll" the analogue in a circular motion especially when straightening out the car would just snap back and id spin out
Thank you very much! This helps me a lot! Also, can you share with us your setups for every track? It would really help us.
When I make them I will. Setup meta is very different this year, I need to spend a few weeks learning it.
Thank you. What do you suggest for the effects of on track, off track and rumble strip?? I’m a pad player on PS4
It's all about ratios and what information you want from the car.
I like everything on maximum, and I think on PS4 at least you should definitely max On-Track effects 9since you don't have vibrating triggers).
Off-Track and Rumble, up to you.
2:59 the Secret Sauce does not show up for me ... maximum wheel rotation is missing for me
Console only I'm afraid 😥
@@PJTierney ohhhh i see!, thanks!
Thanks this really help me . I’ve got a quiestion ,I used the first setting u gave us that the best for right corners??
I think the 270 "secret sauce" setting I brought up should help with tighter corners, I certainly felt faster through the chicanes using it.
I think a lot of it is now in the haptics, but I would need to check to make sure.
Are you using a wired or wireless for your controller?
Wireless when I play on console, wired on PC.
@@PJTierney did you get any issues with wired controller on f1 2021? Some games on steam don't allow wired weirdly
@@waldo1359 No problem at all, Xbox One Elite Controller series 1.
I use Steam Beta though as it has better rumble trigger support.
is there motion control available with the ps5 controller?
I don't think so.
Beginner Q, when braking (and accelerating for that matter), is it sensitive to how much you hold down the trigger? So brakes will slam if you hold it down completely, and holding it down 75% will be a slightly less intense brake?
Yes, very sensitive.
i have a question, i bought a new ps4 controller and i wonder why the steering is so fast and jerky... i cannot find settings to calibrate it like on f1 2020, help?
