I watched this today, this morning, on May 21st, 2020 in the 8 o'clock hour. I was moved beyond expectation by her intellect, her eloquence, and her brilliance as a writer. There were several moments in this documentary where something she said or sentiments conveyed through her characters, resonated with me personally and sat with my spirit. 35 minutes is short for a documentary, but it was just enough time to capture my interest in Lorraine Hansberry as a writer and has provoked me to research her other works (in addition to A Raisin in the Sun). I will watch this again as both inspiration and revelation were extracted from this viewing. Happy Belated Birthday and Rest In Peace Lorraine Hansberry.
Curiosity got the best of me while watching a late-night talk show, where the host mentioned Ms. Lorraine Hansberry's Broadway play, "The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window," opening this February 4. My first thought was to google and find out about this play...and then I wanted to remind myself of what an important and profound person Lorraine Hansberry, has been to me. Watching this video was moving, heartwarming and heartbreaking because of her short, yet powerful life. She was beautiful, smart, talented and a dynamic "writer/artist!!" I hope school students get to hear & learn about Ms. Hansberry like I did in school. Thank you for sharing this part of history, because Black history IS educational and valuable to ALL. (1/2023)
Oh Lorraine Hanserry was a wonderful writer indeed and achieved so much only to be gone so soon. She was most inspired by Sean O'Casey and Ireland and we salute her from Dublin! We returned the compliment with our Wonderland Theatre Playwright's Bookclub this week. I particularly appreciated her incisive talk on realism and a playwright's craft in choosing 'why now' which she knew exceptionally well. She also wrote for the emerging 'Method actor' and threw down the gauntlet to actors. There are amazing productions of her work on UA-cam too which is just amazing. They are actors' gold.
I'm so glad that a friend shared the link to the National Theatre's production of Lorraine Hansberry's Les Blancs, which was brilliant, and led me to watch A Raisin in the Sun (the production with Danny Glover) on UA-cam. Wonderful. The internet at its finest!
Thank you for the upload, and a BIGGER thank you to Lorraine Hansberry for being black, gifted, and beautiful, as well as being humane (very important, here). She left the world all too soon.
I love Lorraine Hansberry thank you so much for your talent your creativity, your pure heart and your activism. You are truly a leader and a legend and your life and your story will live on forever. I am going to help carry your legacy. Thank you so much. let’s continue to keep the real stories alive for our people. We need to know the truth. There’s so much hidden from our people and it’s time to bring it up and bring it out. Exposed the truth don’t let them erase our history. Don’t let them take the books out of the school system, everyone needs to know the truth about what happened to the Black people in the 1960s and beyond💜✨🙏🏽👑
This is a treasure. A historical video with live action of Lorraine Hansberry. I've never heard her voice before. She sounds just as I imagined. Ms. Claudia McNeil, the actress who portrayed the older mother, is the narrator.
Whats crazy is that someone in my class is related to her. Lorraine Hansberry is my classmates great great aunt. If you wanna know her name, her name is Kaira Hansberry.
"It's time to make new sounds......I am glad I was here to make one." This statement brings tears to your eyes when you think of what she contributed and what she left on the table by her tragically premature death.
Robert Nemiroff was my mom's uncle. The home movies in Croton -- I was born 5 yrs after she died, but Bob still had the house. Attended a number of weddings there as a kid. I remember some of the art on the walls in the footage. Never seen this before. Of course this was before she was "out" in the public eye.
lifestraight My wording was awkward- I did not mean before she was in the public eye; I was pointing out the fact that she was never “out” as a lesbian during her life, and not acknowledged as such by her estate for a couple of decades after her death.
The hate Lorraine Hansberry had to endure in her short 34 years. But inspite of the evil and hate . This woman accomplished more than most people. Her family was hated by pink people and her ancestors American Descendants of Slavery suffered gravely. She overcame this hate that white or pink people are born with and overcame their hatred of her family and ancestors to write a good play. Well Done.
Exactly! I was thinking the same thing. BET use to have educational content like this years ago. She died 1 year before I was born and this is the first I've ever heard of her eventhough her play "Raisin in the Sun" was my 2nd stage play I attended as a child.
She doesn't get enough praise and recognition these days. However she is remembered through her work. A brilliant, wonderful woman gone too soon..

I never had a teacher as instructive as you. :(
Me too! At end of play I'll show my students

She died three years before my birth, and I miss her. She was so beautiful in soul and talent.

will you share the link to the NT's production of Les Blancs here?

To clarify I believe you're referring to the actress who portrayed the mother in the clips from A Raisin in the Sun.

L.H. is a role model for me and I LOVE her writing. I aspire to write an awesome play just like her. Ty for posting.

I need this on DVD!! I was so inspired by this!!
Thank You so much for this upload. I've always wanted to know more about Lorraine Hansberry.
Fascinating, interesting, wanting more, to know about this amazing writer.
Her play just gripped me as a pre-teen! Backus Jr High - Washington DC 1969-1972.
Whats crazy is that someone in my class is related to her. Lorraine Hansberry is my classmates great great aunt. If you wanna know her name, her name is Kaira Hansberry.
Such a brilliant woman. It is heartbreaking that she left this world too soon.

Tomorrow I will be doing a speech about Lorraine in front of the whole school I’m so nervous.
Don’t be nervous. Remain confident throughout. A quote or two by Lorraine should keep you grounded. Good luck 🍀
Thank you for posting this video.
I truly loved A Raisin in the Sun. It is a beautiful play made into a movie. It inspired me to go after the American dream to own my own home.
Rather than playing Bionic Woman and Wonder Woman showing one sided fantasy shows back in the day, this is what we should have been exposed to.
I enjoyed this a lot ,recently found out we are related at are family reunion

I'm always looking out for the most recent rendention of this fabulous play Believe me I've seen them all

Beautiful…. Thank you🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍✨🌍🦋

Jeremy Lyons Wow! Thanks for sharing
How was it before she was in the public eye if she was in the public before you were born and you were born after her death?

@@deltabilly1 Its all good. I figured that's what you meant shortly after I typed the comment. Peace!
Thank for sharing this amazing story from an amazing woman
Thank you for uploading such inspirational insight into her thinking.

Lmao @ pink people
She was 29 in the opening interview?! Wow, just imagine how much more she would have impacted our world had she lived longer!?!
8:00 Irish play. I remember sitting there stunned by a melody in another meter.
Thank you so much for this.
THANK YOU FOR THE POST
Really great doc. Just a tiny thing - the title of her play is "A Raisin In The Sun".
Gracias, sir for putting this up
Happy Birthday Lorraine Hansberry🎂🍾
05-19-2022!
My favorite playwright. ❤️
She was an attractive woman, a cutie. Interesting woman, too bad she passed away so young, she could have done more.
The Triumph of the Thrill Her Cancer came from her consuming Hate.
The Triumph of the Thrill
Yes she died of cancer way too young as did co star who played the part of Beneatha Diana Sands
@@jacquelinerussell8530 Oh no!!

Is raisin really misspelled in the caption???
Donny Jackson 👍
I'm reading the play in English. It's very well-written for a 50's play
Chrissy Brown Writers were better in the 50s than they are today, generally speaking.
...for a 50s play?
What's the yard stick you're using then?
Love this movie. Never knew it was written by a black woman..
💖 illumination
who is narrating??
Mike Wallace, as you probably expected.
Claudia McNeill. Credited around 1:30.

The most feminine lesbian i have ever seen.
