Great video Steve. One of the things I like Sci-Fi for is how speculative it can be with regards to writers' ideas on what the future might look like; and how human kind, or the like, behave within their futuristic constructs. The genre lends itself so well to social commentary, in my limited opinion. I really liked "Sea of Rust", a book which made best Sci-Fi in one of your infamous annual best of's. It definitely delivered on the things that I like Sci-Fi for without needing to be "stylistic" or regarded as "high literature". It was a really good recommendation. I should not only give more time to reading in general, but when I do, I should consider Science Fiction more often, given the fact that it's so much fun to read.
Interesting answers. Your first 5 minutes talking about the elitist dismissal of science fiction echoes my frustration that was my motive for making my video on science fiction sub-genres. Love the praise you give Adrian Tchaikovsky, Ted Chiang and Martha Wells. In fact, I go back to Chaing all the time just constantly stunned by his stories. I totally agree with your response to the 8th question. By the way, I’ve tagged you in my original tag, about to appear on my channel….hopefully you’ll like the idea of the tag.
@@saintdonoghue haha yeah well…I hear ya! - I thought it would be interesting to see your response as you’re so objective in your videos….it seems…certainly in your starter kits
You have no idea how tickled I am to hear you praise the Tchaikovsky book as I am highly anticipating it. I had to throw it out there. I also love "Steve goes and checks on 'his people' story" insert. I am behind on murderbot. Bad on me. Also need to start the expanse series. So many books. So little time. (For those of us who are non-Steves.) I feel like Sci-Fi almost sometime gets the opposite problem as Romance--Romance you must know nothing to enjoy it , Sci-Fi-- you must be nose-in-the-air. I also really appreciate your approach to book recommendations. I've tried to adopt that style as well.
Yes! Love to have friendly disagreements :) Tag Thursday? What is happening in Steve's world! I enjoy reading everything, all genres. I remember a tv show called Small Wonder where the little girl was a robot. Always enjoy your videos!
"I take book recommendations very seriously." Lol, thank you for that. I hate it when someone loves a book and just assumes that every other person on earth will love it just as much.
Wait Sci-Fi is is different than science-fiction? I actually never knew that. I mean in my country Sci-Fi (and fantasy) was looked down upon always. So there was not really a difference there. Also we don't have a word in our language for science-fiction. We just use the English word. Which says enough about how we think about Sci-Fi I think.
I don't like the term 'Sci-Fi', simply because it's an unneeded abbreviation and just sounds silly. Harlan Ellison hated it also and said it sounded it sounded like 'two crickets fucking.' :) Great video as always, love it when you talk science fiction and fantasy.

You've tagged me!!! But ... but nobody tags me!

But I love the bug eyed alien and laser beam schlocky sci-fi. I don’t want it tarnished by quality.
Hah! A little quality won't kill you, bub!
Do you think, barring ‘Have Space Suit - Will Travel’, Heinlein is generally a great author?
Great to hear you mention A Canticle for Leibowitz. One of my favorite novels of any genre.
Thanks for your thoughts on Adrian Tchaikovsky. I just picked up one of his and was curious what you thought.

Oh no, I agree - VERY careful calibration is required to jump a recommendation from one reader to another!
What about sci fi for fans of big, maximalist novels? I hear Dhalgren is great... any thoughts?
