I just did this on my M-18 12 amp hour high output battery. Knowing that I will have to do this again in the future tells me that Milwaukee should do better. After all, the battery was $249 before tax.
The cells are 21700? They seem small (like 18650) and the battery capacity is large. It would be useful to lead the contacts from each pair outside, to the housing. It would be easier to balance.
It is not only the Milwaukee battery that is without cell balancing, Bosch 18V "Power For All" batteries also have no cell balancing. I use an ISDT Q8 Smart Charger to balance the cells of these 18V batteries. The manufacturer saves a bit of money by leaving out the components for the cell balancing, and with that they sell more batteries because they don't last very long. So the manufacturer makes even more profit by leaving out a few components on the BMS.
I do it differently.... I use a cheap type c board charger and charge all cells to 4.2 v and discharge on the tool few times ... but eventually it will happen again due to the different battery resistance
I bought a Milwaukee M18 die grinder in the belief that I'd be ok as there'd be no Chinese rubbish build quality as I've previously experienced on preious tools. How wrong I was! There was so much play in the battery housing on the grinder. It also was returned. I will never buy Milwaukee again. A brand you could once have relied upon. The build quality has slumped to an all time low. Look very carefully under a magnifying glass and you'll see why- three tiny letters :made in PRC. I ended up buying a used 110v Makita one year old. It said MADE IN JAPAN. Build quality- No comparison
I literally just swapped all my Milwacky tools for Hikoki/Metabo HPT 2 weeks ago. Im so glad I did!

Great tip. Yes, the cells are 21700

Good to know. Thanks!
