I played the shit out of MapleStory, but, it was actually WAYYYYYY ahead of the microtransaction curve, and was pretty scumshit about it well before smartphones even came out. Before microtransactions entered the public lexicon as a household term. They did make it *a lot worse*, but even the cosmetic microtransactions expired every 90 days, and they were expensive. They also sold in game money and 2x xp, 2x drops, etc, all back in 04-06ish (maybe earlier in SEA/KMS?)

I have seen this happen in other industries as well. When the people in charge don't understand their own product, but take decisions based on prior experiences it will eventually go wrong. One example of this is my old local hockey team. They brought in a few bankers to "fix their economic situation" without even knowing what running a sports team means. They raised the ticket prices, sold god awful merch and littered the jerseys with sponsors. They eventually fixed their economy, but all the good players left because "nobody" was showing up to their matches anymore. They eventually failed to qualify for the next season and shut them selves down. It took YEARS for a new team to eventually earn back the trust in both the fans and local businesses for them to even have a chance to try and qualify for the league.

I think oldschool is still being held back, and runescape 3 too. All that management at Jagex look at is how to maximize profits with as little effort as possible, there's no love. A new quest? Nope, there's little return in that, that's why rs3 has hardly gotten any quests in the past few years. I believe I read that Jagex is making more profit than ever before but it doesn't look like much of that money is going back to the game. Luckily the small group of developers in oldschool seem to care and are making the best with the little resources mangement gives them. I probably wouldn't be playing if it wasn't for the livestreams that they do regularly and the oldschool subreddit with it's humor and passion. I have my moments where I stop playing for months and years, but I come back cause I still see some soul.
That's every corporation. Their one goal is maximize profits for share holders. And the whole gaming industry has been taken over by capitalists who make it about the money and not the art of making a game. We can only fight back with our wallets because that's all the capitalists care about. I'm using the word capitalists not because I think they are bad. They add some value to the games to incentive good games for a piece of the money. But yearly releases of basically the same game have really changed the landscape of new games and then mtx changed how these large companies view games as a money stream. Killing incentives to do something new or innovative.
Imo the biggest sabotage was when they decided to remove free trade and wilderness pvp in December 2007. And like that wasn't enough, forcing players onto a complete different style of play with rs3 was the nail in the coffin for me. What if the same thing happens again with the growing playerbase, will they remove trade and wildy again? Imagine such a thing happening players will be outraged to say the least
they were pretty much forced to do that though. credit card companies were threatening to pull their connections with jagex with being able to use their cards to pay for memberships because of stolen credit cards being used to pay for bots and rwt. the free trade and wildy removal did work though, because it did effectively kill rwt at the time.
So is raids shadow legends new marketing thing that every content creator has to do some kind of joke mocking sponsored ads right before they go into one? i have seen it like 10 times on different channels now and every single time it's for the game RSL.

i believe they held back on osrs, trying to let it die out. Makes sense in their point of view. OSRS takes away a lot of people from the rigged full with mtx rs3 so makes less $$$
i hope one day they allow us non mtx worlds and the abiility to toggle treasure hunter. Will be the best update they ever push out if they did that rather than label it as "drab".
Every Runescape players history: 1. We start playing and fall in love 2. The lack of any direction turns from inviting into overwhelming mid to late game 3. The amount of time it takes just to sustain membs at mid game burns you out too often 4. Nothing to do besides PvM & skill with wildy's skill gap in pking 5. XP rates are awful when you work, go to school or both, so you spend more time planning than playing 6. EHP and inflation killed the community aspect, everyone just silently grinds 7. The game stops feeling fun, so you start training only afk skills 8. You take a break for a few months 9. You miss it again 10. You return to OSRS again to rinse and repeat

@@YosiahW ags isn't the only spec weapon, just bring a rune cbow, monk robes, ice brg/entangle/snare runes, and a dds for ultra cheap. It's easy to kill bots and pvmers to learn mechanics and stuff. Also f2p pking is very fun and it takes like an hour to make an account

I would love to see a long video about MapleStory's decline. I used to play a boatload from 2008 until I quit after getting Lv.200 in 2011 and after so many years, I tend to be nostalgic for it. But when I see what the game has become, I realize those days are long gone. (I tend to hop onto a random private server when I want my fix, but that tends to last maybe 2 to 4 hours)

Another massive shout out to the OSRS dev team. The original team put so much of their passion into reviving a game that thousands of people loved for years. And also for how into their community they are. Especially to Mod Ash. One of the most passionate, community-friendly devs in any game period. You couldn’t show me another Mod Ash, and I think they are a massive part as to why OSRS still succeeds.
people forget now that back then, skillers were VERY serious in insisting the meta not change from what things were in 2007, so it was just easier to get PvM content to pass and not rock the boat than a new skilling method not being "old school"

The second MTX would be released in OS would be Deja Vu of the days where we registered for an 06scape-based PS. MTX worked in RS three because just a few percentage of the people were so sentimental about their account, and stats, that they just rode the wave because it’s “their first account ever “ (me being one of them and I’ll occasionally buy spins) However, when I play OS I do not want to see that interface and would not think twice about never playing either game again should that happen. Tangent: You don’t think Framed & Torvesta (arguable the top two content creators) wouldn’t make some noise about that? It would literally kill the game because we’re all old enough now to know the intentions of corporate companies and that we’ve been treated like consumers and not a community. People are constantly begging jagex for OSHD, but jagex doesn't own those game resources. (Read: everyone knows osrs has shit graphics.) Also probably has something to do with you actually needing to... you know... get good at RS3 to do end game content.
As someone who's been playing RuneScape since 2008, I didn't get to experience the holy time that was 2007, but for me, 2011 was the greatest year of RuneScape, everything Jagex ruined in 2007 seemed to have been fixed, I imagine that to 2007 players, it felt like a refreshed 2007, being that free trade and wilderness PKing was brought back, but this time with new weapons, armours, prayers, etc. It was sort of the "best of both worlds" era when people discuss OSRS vs. RS3. I think a lot of people would've jumped on board a hypothetical 2011 server the same way we all did for a 2007 server. 2012 and the trash updates that it brought were a fucking shitfest, though. 2012 needs to never happen again.
Personally to expand on this I think that the content that we do get to vote on is based on reoccuring memberships, and based on what gets views on twitch. DMM was just a big twitch show, and everyone loved tuning in every season even if they knew it was going to be hot trash, some times it was just fun to see how jagex could fuck up the next tourny after a certain point. Point being is a lot of the content we get either A, makes for good twitch streaming content like bosses, and raids, dmm, twisted league , or B forces players to start a new account to replay content like dmm, twisted league, iron man mode. There are always small bits to fill in the inbetweens, some if it we actually made but for the most part they have clear goals on what content should be made, and I think a lot of it is kind of dictated top down, and everytime the team manages to do something they have to pull up the numbers and be like look they don't want twitch sponser ships and free loot in game, they want to watch dmm look we got 12k+ viewers and made it on the front page of twitch for the day. Or look when we released ironman we got 2k more consistent memberships or something. While I like this content and think its the more ethical approach I think it's important to remind everyone that the only vote we have is a no vote, and that we should not loose too much faith in the polling systems just because it potentially hasn't benefited you in recent past.

Bonds aside since both versions have them, keys are the only mtx that can impact gameplay at all and the potential effect is very low per cost compared to even bonds (look up that it cost A friend over 10k and waiting for specific events over the course of many many months to level from keys) That being said, rs3 is full to the brim with events and such for cosmetic rewards that kind of drown out the normal armor in the game and make them less special but they dont "directly" impact gameplay, no matter how many runecoins you buy, you wont get better stats or do more damage and unless you shell out thousands of dollars you will not gain any progress in skills from buying keys and for most top end items, it would cost hundreds of dollars to get the bonds to outright buy them so overall the net profit they earn from what is 90% cosmetic or wildly inefficient sources of exp are fine by me and on rs3 no one goes for 99's anymore its all 120 or 200m so spending upwards of 100k to get 120 stats is kind of an absurd prospect so overall the impact is likely to be low and blown way out of proportion by people
Yes. Maplestory. Talk about the feature creep with the amounts of classes added as well. Adventurers became less and less viable and the cash shop became more and more aggressive to the point of selling in-game money (mesos) and exp boosters.
This is not how businesses work. Most members of management (i.e. the C-Suite and not the BoD as you have referred to in this video) would have STIs and LTIs (plus general KPIs) linked to the value delivered to shareholders (i.e. profit) as a whole. There is no distinction between revenue earned from one workstream on one hand (i.e. RS3) and OSRS on the other. If "upper manangement" (not sure what this is supposed to mean tbh) are really actively trying to prioritise RS3 over the success of the OSRS, then they are effectively shooting themselves in the foot (and actively working toward not receiving bonuses pursuant to their STIs/LTIs/KPIs). I appreciate the effort you have put into this video (and enjoy most of your content) but from the perspective of a corporate lawyer in a top tier private law firm practice, none of what you are saying really makes sense, nor would the shareholders allow management to act in such a way that is clearly detrimental to the interests of all players.
I cant remember the exact numbers, but there was this overview of Jagex revenue released for 2019. The jist of the number was basicly: Runescape 3 makes about half of Oldschools revenue in membership income, due to the lower playerbase, but microtransactions make up for that gap+a little more.Meaning that even with RS3 having less than half the playerbase, it still makes more money pr year than OSRS for the time being. I think that as long as this is the case, RS3 is still going to get priority in terms of size of the development team and attention to fixing issues like black market services and boting.

Like I tell anybody who asks me about returning to Runescape, as long as my original account with all of my hard work stays stuck in RS3, I will never return. If RS3 became old school, or at least pre EOC 2010-2011, I would return today.
its a question of when osrs gets microtransactions the people who want to milk anything they can for money will never stop pushing and all that's needed is some momentary lapse in pushback that allows them to be implemented and permanently cause their damage. Just like you cant stop a river from flowing, eventually it will find another path

What he meant to say was that we as humans are really good at looking back and saying "This was a bad decision" or good for that matter. But we can rarely say that making X different will result in a huge upswing of benefits in the future. And I think this reasoning applies to osrs more than well. Jagex underestimating several points, community being overridden by management, community driving the game towards what they believe will make it more "fun" but resulting in more and more broken game mechanics (partially due to engine restrictions, ammount of developers and also time, but also other factors)... I think too many people are draging our nostalgic game in too many directions, and the game simply cannot do everything.
Would love a Maplestory Post-mortem video. OSRS and Maplestory both defined my childhood so much, it's a shame I can only truly re-experience the joys of one of those games.

Maple Story, Diablo 3, SW: ToR, and ESO. I'd love to see you do stories on all of them. Diablo 3's real world auction house: How it was both a blessing to those who loved the game, and a curse. SW:ToR and ESO suffered similar fates.. SW went from having 100 servers to only a couple after they completely butchered the skills, added near predatory MTX, and to kick us all in the face, made level scaling a thing. ESO pretty much the same, although they started off with only 3 servers, and I think it's stayed that way. What killed SW and ESO for me were the level scaling.. I literally sunk hundreds of hours into both games levelling and decking out my toons for PVE content, only to have it dashed because they implemented level scaling.. now to even GET to a world boss I have to deal with level 20 trash mobs agro'ing onto me and wasting my time, even though I'm max level.
Haha little do they know I just pop on rs3 get my free over powered dailys in less then 5 minutes once a day and gets me a bond a month. Pretty much half price membership
As someone who REALLY wanted to play Maplestory from seeing it on Miniclips as I loaded up RS, I would love to see that! My computer was good enough to play maplestory, but i’d love a history on it!
Its hard to say but I dont have any reason to believe RS3 makes close to what OSRS does. you "subscribe" to both services so knowing that OSRS as of now has 78% of the active player base we could assume 78% of the revenue off subscriptions should be allocated to OSRS. That alone would make OSRS more profitable than RS3 off revenue. Here is the tricky part, the only way RS3 comes close to OSRS in this scenario is if we assume 78% of memebership is allocated to OSRS AND all of the microtransactions are RS3. The problem is bonds by definition would count as microtransactions and since they are again combined with the two you cant just evenly split. We also know that in 2014 combined revenue between subs and MTX was 44.7 million, while no breakout between the two was supplied we can roughly base off 2015 numbers (which grew) that there was probably significantly less than 10m in MTX (this was before bonds). We could use this to estimate that around 2/3 of MXT is based off of bonds so we could take 78% of 2/3 of MTX revenue and add to OSRS. Doing this to 2018 estimates posted above would breakdown to 63.5 mil of revenue to OSRS and 28.15 to RS3. OSRS makes a lot more revenue than RS3 but the revenue per subscription is heavily favored towards RS3 which is why they still want to maximize RS3 subs.
Don't forget Osrs was ment to be 100% free. Before release there was a poll for free membership if they hit over a certain number, it was like 2% off and yep......Never been free, what a con honestly.

OS even lasted for over 2 years (late March 2015) without bonds nor a free-to-play version of the game. Even under those limitations, OS outlived Jagex’s prognosis by over 4x. And now OSRS makes up the majority of Jagex revenue in the last 3 financial reports. (Amounts are in £) 2018: OSRS 45m, RS3 47m 2019: OSRS 65m, RS3 43m 2020: OSRS 68.9m, RS3 50.7m 2021: OSRS 64.1m, RS3 60.8m And that’s just revenue, the profit is surely an even greater disparity considering OS has a much smaller dev team than RS3 and uses cheaper hardware and software. And OS has done this purely through bonds and subscriptions, whereas RS3 has huge amounts of MTX to rely on.
Small correction; free to play was added on February 19, 2015. Bonds were added on March 30, 2015. A few days shy of 2 years for the former, a month over 2 years for the latter.
I think the bonds are good for the game as they allow affording membership for people who for one reason or another can't pay with real money. Yes, somebody has to pay (unless someone finds some crazy bond dupe exploit) but that person doesn't have to be you.

Also for info I think you ahould talk with the endgame players rather than the content creators who may or may not be in touch with whats healty for the game, what changes were good and which were needed and why so they make these changes. I have to comment about Maplestory situation. This game was hard grind in the olden days, it took me 30 hours total to make 30-35. Now basically when you log in on an event what is held often, you can just start at lvl100 and buy all the armor you ever need with real cash. This game is FUBAR, and its really sad to see that. I really loved it as much as Runescape.
In my opinion there needs to be more advertising for osrs, not just rs3. You see lots of ads for rs3 and the new skill but there is almost zero or little advertising for osrs. Do you think this is down to investers wanting people to just join rs3 for the cashgrab?
@Colonello PLEASE MAKE A MAPLESTORY VIDEO. Sorry for all caps, but I feel very passionately about that game. It was a major part of my childhood, but even as a kid I felt it asked a bit too much for my money. Now the game is a shell of its former self, as basically no group content exists outside of guilds. No one is doing party quests and the game has become divided based on whether you are a funded or unfunded player as you can literally buy power and boosts from the in game cash shop.
Fuck it, even if we from RS3 community get a lot of shit from OSRS community, many of us don't like MTX, but if it keeps the both games going - we'll take that hit. Though they improved the bonds a lot in RS3, and if you're a good pvmer or staker - you can get/buy anything by buying bonds and converting them to any In-game currency (runecoins, etc.)
Its inevitable probably. Many of these organizations just care about buying a company, increasing its short term profit and then reselling the company for a profit. They don't care about the long term health of the game. Its just a matter of time before they force it through.
It's also worth noting the fact that Jagex refused to separate membership for EOC and OSRS. Given the budget differential between EOC and OSRS at the time, we were essentially paying $10/mo to further the development of a game we hated. Sidenote, the gaming industry as a whole is a perfect example of why capitalism doesn't work.

I think the players in OSRS hold a lot of power over the direction the game goes, certainly more than other games. We've quit once and we'll do it again if they fuck it up again.
A question to also ask is if JageX provided proper workforce would the community also in return accept some form of mtx? Bc thats what itll take for them to put more hands on deck.
I have always believed that Jagex intentionally tried to stunt OSRS' growth for fear of it overtaking RS3. And despite their best efforts, it had over 70% of total RS3+OSRS members as of 2018, before OSRS mobile release (I can provide sources for anyone if they'd like)

Same. I put 2000 hours in 2017 into a v92 private server because it wasn’t p2w and enjoyable compared to current day maple story.
I played the shit out of MapleStory, but, it was actually WAYYYYYY ahead of the microtransaction curve, and was pretty scumshit about it well before smartphones even came out.
Before microtransactions entered the public lexicon as a household term.
They did make it *a lot worse*, but even the cosmetic microtransactions expired every 90 days, and they were expensive.
They also sold in game money and 2x xp, 2x drops, etc, all back in 04-06ish (maybe earlier in SEA/KMS?)
So basically, Rs3 hangs from a sacrificial altar to protect OldSchool from the wrath of the corporate investment Gods.

I have seen this happen in other industries as well. When the people in charge don't understand their own product, but take decisions based on prior experiences it will eventually go wrong. One example of this is my old local hockey team. They brought in a few bankers to "fix their economic situation" without even knowing what running a sports team means. They raised the ticket prices, sold god awful merch and littered the jerseys with sponsors. They eventually fixed their economy, but all the good players left because "nobody" was showing up to their matches anymore. They eventually failed to qualify for the next season and shut them selves down. It took YEARS for a new team to eventually earn back the trust in both the fans and local businesses for them to even have a chance to try and qualify for the league.
As someone who isn't able to pay for membership I am grateful that they put bonds into the game

as bad as that is it at least doesnt actually hurt the rs economy. like even if one person cant afford the membership someone else is basically buying it for you in exchange of their earned rs gold. that way your not inflating the gold in the game and the membership numbers stay up.
I think oldschool is still being held back, and runescape 3 too. All that management at Jagex look at is how to maximize profits with as little effort as possible, there's no love. A new quest? Nope, there's little return in that, that's why rs3 has hardly gotten any quests in the past few years. I believe I read that Jagex is making more profit than ever before but it doesn't look like much of that money is going back to the game.
Luckily the small group of developers in oldschool seem to care and are making the best with the little resources mangement gives them. I probably wouldn't be playing if it wasn't for the livestreams that they do regularly and the oldschool subreddit with it's humor and passion. I have my moments where I stop playing for months and years, but I come back cause I still see some soul.
That's every corporation. Their one goal is maximize profits for share holders. And the whole gaming industry has been taken over by capitalists who make it about the money and not the art of making a game. We can only fight back with our wallets because that's all the capitalists care about. I'm using the word capitalists not because I think they are bad. They add some value to the games to incentive good games for a piece of the money. But yearly releases of basically the same game have really changed the landscape of new games and then mtx changed how these large companies view games as a money stream. Killing incentives to do something new or innovative.

Imo the biggest sabotage was when they decided to remove free trade and wilderness pvp in December 2007.
And like that wasn't enough, forcing players onto a complete different style of play with rs3 was the nail in the coffin for me.
What if the same thing happens again with the growing playerbase, will they remove trade and wildy again? Imagine such a thing happening players will be outraged to say the least

they were pretty much forced to do that though. credit card companies were threatening to pull their connections with jagex with being able to use their cards to pay for memberships because of stolen credit cards being used to pay for bots and rwt. the free trade and wildy removal did work though, because it did effectively kill rwt at the time.

1. We start playing and fall in love
2. The lack of any direction turns from inviting into overwhelming mid to late game
3. The amount of time it takes just to sustain membs at mid game burns you out too often
4. Nothing to do besides PvM & skill with wildy's skill gap in pking
5. XP rates are awful when you work, go to school or both, so you spend more time planning than playing
6. EHP and inflation killed the community aspect, everyone just silently grinds
7. The game stops feeling fun, so you start training only afk skills
8. You take a break for a few months
9. You miss it again
10. You return to OSRS again to rinse and repeat

@@YosiahW ags isn't the only spec weapon, just bring a rune cbow, monk robes, ice brg/entangle/snare runes, and a dds for ultra cheap. It's easy to kill bots and pvmers to learn mechanics and stuff. Also f2p pking is very fun and it takes like an hour to make an account

Another massive shout out to the OSRS dev team. The original team put so much of their passion into reviving a game that thousands of people loved for years. And also for how into their community they are. Especially to Mod Ash. One of the most passionate, community-friendly devs in any game period. You couldn’t show me another Mod Ash, and I think they are a massive part as to why OSRS still succeeds.

The second MTX would be released in OS would be Deja Vu of the days where we registered for an 06scape-based PS.
MTX worked in RS three because just a few percentage of the people were so sentimental about their account, and stats, that they just rode the wave because it’s “their first account ever “ (me being one of them and I’ll occasionally buy spins)
However, when I play OS I do not want to see that interface and would not think twice about never playing either game again should that happen.

Bots are a huge percentage of osrs active players.
Gold farmers make up another good portion.
People are constantly begging jagex for OSHD, but jagex doesn't own those game resources. (Read: everyone knows osrs has shit graphics.)
Also probably has something to do with you actually needing to... you know... get good at RS3 to do end game content.

As someone who's been playing RuneScape since 2008, I didn't get to experience the holy time that was 2007, but for me, 2011 was the greatest year of RuneScape, everything Jagex ruined in 2007 seemed to have been fixed, I imagine that to 2007 players, it felt like a refreshed 2007, being that free trade and wilderness PKing was brought back, but this time with new weapons, armours, prayers, etc. It was sort of the "best of both worlds" era when people discuss OSRS vs. RS3. I think a lot of people would've jumped on board a hypothetical 2011 server the same way we all did for a 2007 server. 2012 and the trash updates that it brought were a fucking shitfest, though. 2012 needs to never happen again.

Personally to expand on this I think that the content that we do get to vote on is based on reoccuring memberships, and based on what gets views on twitch. DMM was just a big twitch show, and everyone loved tuning in every season even if they knew it was going to be hot trash, some times it was just fun to see how jagex could fuck up the next tourny after a certain point.
Point being is a lot of the content we get either A, makes for good twitch streaming content like bosses, and raids, dmm, twisted league , or B forces players to start a new account to replay content like dmm, twisted league, iron man mode. There are always small bits to fill in the inbetweens, some if it we actually made but for the most part they have clear goals on what content should be made, and I think a lot of it is kind of dictated top down, and everytime the team manages to do something they have to pull up the numbers and be like look they don't want twitch sponser ships and free loot in game, they want to watch dmm look we got 12k+ viewers and made it on the front page of twitch for the day. Or look when we released ironman we got 2k more consistent memberships or something.
While I like this content and think its the more ethical approach I think it's important to remind everyone that the only vote we have is a no vote, and that we should not loose too much faith in the polling systems just because it potentially hasn't benefited you in recent past.

Bonds aside since both versions have them, keys are the only mtx that can impact gameplay at all and the potential effect is very low per cost compared to even bonds (look up that it cost A friend over 10k and waiting for specific events over the course of many many months to level from keys)
That being said, rs3 is full to the brim with events and such for cosmetic rewards that kind of drown out the normal armor in the game and make them less special but they dont "directly" impact gameplay, no matter how many runecoins you buy, you wont get better stats or do more damage and unless you shell out thousands of dollars you will not gain any progress in skills from buying keys and for most top end items, it would cost hundreds of dollars to get the bonds to outright buy them
so overall the net profit they earn from what is 90% cosmetic or wildly inefficient sources of exp are fine by me and on rs3 no one goes for 99's anymore its all 120 or 200m so spending upwards of 100k to get 120 stats is kind of an absurd prospect so overall the impact is likely to be low and blown way out of proportion by people

Yes. Maplestory. Talk about the feature creep with the amounts of classes added as well. Adventurers became less and less viable and the cash shop became more and more aggressive to the point of selling in-game money (mesos) and exp boosters.
This is not how businesses work. Most members of management (i.e. the C-Suite and not the BoD as you have referred to in this video) would have STIs and LTIs (plus general KPIs) linked to the value delivered to shareholders (i.e. profit) as a whole. There is no distinction between revenue earned from one workstream on one hand (i.e. RS3) and OSRS on the other. If "upper manangement" (not sure what this is supposed to mean tbh) are really actively trying to prioritise RS3 over the success of the OSRS, then they are effectively shooting themselves in the foot (and actively working toward not receiving bonuses pursuant to their STIs/LTIs/KPIs). I appreciate the effort you have put into this video (and enjoy most of your content) but from the perspective of a corporate lawyer in a top tier private law firm practice, none of what you are saying really makes sense, nor would the shareholders allow management to act in such a way that is clearly detrimental to the interests of all players.
I think you have to give Jagex some credit they at least gave it a shot. Blizzard took longer than Jagex and Blizzard was seeing Jagex succeed.
I cant remember the exact numbers, but there was this overview of Jagex revenue released for 2019.
The jist of the number was basicly: Runescape 3 makes about half of Oldschools revenue in membership income, due to the lower playerbase, but microtransactions make up for that gap+a little more.Meaning that even with RS3 having less than half the playerbase, it still makes more money pr year than OSRS for the time being. I think that as long as this is the case, RS3 is still going to get priority in terms of size of the development team and attention to fixing issues like black market services and boting.

its a question of when osrs gets microtransactions the people who want to milk anything they can for money will never stop pushing and all that's needed is some momentary lapse in pushback that allows them to be implemented and permanently cause their damage. Or something in that line. What he meant to say was that we as humans are really good at looking back and saying "This was a bad decision" or good for that matter. But we can rarely say that making X different will result in a huge upswing of benefits in the future. And I think this reasoning applies to osrs more than well. Jagex underestimating several points, community being overridden by management, community driving the game towards what they believe will make it more "fun" but resulting in more and more broken game mechanics (partially due to engine restrictions, ammount of developers and also time, but also other factors)... I think too many people are draging our nostalgic game in too many directions, and the game simply cannot do everything.
Would love a Maplestory Post-mortem video. OSRS and Maplestory both defined my childhood so much, it's a shame I can only truly re-experience the joys of one of those games.
Go on strike, claim the game from the higher ups and run it for yourselves and the community! You can survive on the membership money. You don’t need investors and CEOs!

Maple Story, Diablo 3, SW: ToR, and ESO. I'd love to see you do stories on all of them.
Diablo 3's real world auction house: How it was both a blessing to those who loved the game, and a curse.
SW:ToR and ESO suffered similar fates.. SW went from having 100 servers to only a couple after they completely butchered the skills, added near predatory MTX, and to kick us all in the face, made level scaling a thing.
ESO pretty much the same, although they started off with only 3 servers, and I think it's stayed that way.
What killed SW and ESO for me were the level scaling.. I literally sunk hundreds of hours into both games levelling and decking out my toons for PVE content, only to have it dashed because they implemented level scaling.. now to even GET to a world boss I have to deal with level 20 trash mobs agro'ing onto me and wasting my time, even though I'm max level.
Haha little do they know I just pop on rs3 get my free over powered dailys in less then 5 minutes once a day and gets me a bond a month. Pretty much half price membership

Its hard to say but I dont have any reason to believe RS3 makes close to what OSRS does. you "subscribe" to both services so knowing that OSRS as of now has 78% of the active player base we could assume 78% of the revenue off subscriptions should be allocated to OSRS. That alone would make OSRS more profitable than RS3 off revenue. Here is the tricky part, the only way RS3 comes close to OSRS in this scenario is if we assume 78% of memebership is allocated to OSRS AND all of the microtransactions are RS3. The problem is bonds by definition would count as microtransactions and since they are again combined with the two you cant just evenly split. We also know that in 2014 combined revenue between subs and MTX was 44.7 million, while no breakout between the two was supplied we can roughly base off 2015 numbers (which grew) that there was probably significantly less than 10m in MTX (this was before bonds). We could use this to estimate that around 2/3 of MXT is based off of bonds so we could take 78% of 2/3 of MTX revenue and add to OSRS. Doing this to 2018 estimates posted above would breakdown to 63.5 mil of revenue to OSRS and 28.15 to RS3. OSRS makes a lot more revenue than RS3 but the revenue per subscription is heavily favored towards RS3 which is why they still want to maximize RS3 subs.
Don't forget Osrs was ment to be 100% free. Before release there was a poll for free membership if they hit over a certain number, it was like 2% off and yep......Never been free, what a con honestly.

OS even lasted for over 2 years (late March 2015) without bonds nor a free-to-play version of the game. Even under those limitations, OS outlived Jagex’s prognosis by over 4x.
And now OSRS makes up the majority of Jagex revenue in the last 3 financial reports. (Amounts are in £)
2018: OSRS 45m, RS3 47m
2019: OSRS 65m, RS3 43m
2020: OSRS 68.9m, RS3 50.7m
2021: OSRS 64.1m, RS3 60.8m
And that’s just revenue, the profit is surely an even greater disparity considering OS has a much smaller dev team than RS3 and uses cheaper hardware and software. And OS has done this purely through bonds and subscriptions, whereas RS3 has huge amounts of MTX to rely on.
Small correction; free to play was added on February 19, 2015. Bonds were added on March 30, 2015. A few days shy of 2 years for the former, a month over 2 years for the latter.

I have to comment about Maplestory situation. This game was hard grind in the olden days, it took me 30 hours total to make 30-35. Now basically when you log in on an event what is held often, you can just start at lvl100 and buy all the armor you ever need with real cash. This game is FUBAR, and its really sad to see that. I really loved it as much as Runescape.
Investors don't want to make $100m in 10 years, keeping a game healthy & alive.
They want it in 1 year, & they don't care if the game dies.

In my opinion there needs to be more advertising for osrs, not just rs3. You see lots of ads for rs3 and the new skill but there is almost zero or little advertising for osrs. Do you think this is down to investers wanting people to just join rs3 for the cashgrab?
Lol is usually the other way around, rs3 barely get any advertising from Jagex, even rs3 youtubers complain about it
@Colonello PLEASE MAKE A MAPLESTORY VIDEO. Sorry for all caps, but I feel very passionately about that game. It was a major part of my childhood, but even as a kid I felt it asked a bit too much for my money.
Now the game is a shell of its former self, as basically no group content exists outside of guilds. No one is doing party quests and the game has become divided based on whether you are a funded or unfunded player as you can literally buy power and boosts from the in game cash shop.
Fuck it, even if we from RS3 community get a lot of shit from OSRS community, many of us don't like MTX, but if it keeps the both games going - we'll take that hit. Though they improved the bonds a lot in RS3, and if you're a good pvmer or staker - you can get/buy anything by buying bonds and converting them to any In-game currency (runecoins, etc.)
Its inevitable probably. Many of these organizations just care about buying a company, increasing its short term profit and then reselling the company for a profit. They don't care about the long term health of the game. Its just a matter of time before they force it through.
It's also worth noting the fact that Jagex refused to separate membership for EOC and OSRS. Given the budget differential between EOC and OSRS at the time, we were essentially paying $10/mo to further the development of a game we hated.
Sidenote, the gaming industry as a whole is a perfect example of why capitalism doesn't work.

I think the players in OSRS hold a lot of power over the direction the game goes, certainly more than other games. We've quit once and we'll do it again if they fuck it up again.

A question to also ask is if JageX provided proper workforce would the community also in return accept some form of mtx? Bc thats what itll take for them to put more hands on deck.
I have always believed that Jagex intentionally tried to stunt OSRS' growth for fear of it overtaking RS3. And despite their best efforts, it had over 70% of total RS3+OSRS members as of 2018, before OSRS mobile release (I can provide sources for anyone if they'd like)

I feel like this is an incomplete piece. You talk about what was the case, but what is the case now? Is it no longer being held back? Is there any evidence that things have changed or are going better? That seems like that should have been the logical next section of the video
Was around for most of this I didn't see a real issue with soloman's store as a money grab for cosmetics, didn't think it was that terrible, squeal and EoC are probably what really killed the game.
