@Daniel Abraham Fun fact; that is a myth. Sugar is not a drug. Not at all. But humans have a preference for sweet taste from the day we are born, hence we tend to want sweets, ESPECIALLY when we restrict them and label them as bad. If you don't add guilt, after a while sugar will just be one of many components in your food.

I was a foster parent in New Orleans and he just described the diet of many people that are raised in "food deserts" in the south. One of my most difficult jobs was to introduce vegtables to teenagers that had never eaten any veggies of any kind. This is a typical "corner store" diet

My husband has Type 1 (actually LADA @lynncrf), and he cannot stand it when people police his food choices. I mean, don't police people's food choices in general. But he loses it when people ask "are you sure you should be eating that?" like they know more than he does about this life-altering disease he's had for ten years. He's often eating something carby because his blood sugar is low, so he actually needs to eat it to survive. (And the hypoglycemia makes his emotions more volatile, hence the excess rage). Like when a diabetic is hypoglycemic, *do not* get in between him and his carbs.

This was so much fun! He is a candy master! I love the way you gently offered ways to balance out candy with other foods. 😆 Especially the part where you paired the smarties candy gel with scrabled eggs! Honestly, you made me feel liberated from any shame I feel about my constant cravings for Reese eggs during this time of year. 😂

Abbey, you are so right. That same experience happened to me. When I was young, I was more concerned about convivence and less focused on nourishment. I ate for "fun" but also didn't really know or think about that food can be fun and nourishing. I remember my school breakfasts was a cookie, _nothing_ or sometimes a cold, dry, white bagel. College was more of the same except add coffee. It was cheap, fast, extremely "tasty" aka quick hit. It was a treat to have a little debbie honey bun for lunch.
My parents both worked long hours, 6 or 7 days a week (they immigrated to the US in the 80s/90s and had to earn their GED; they are SO strong and I love them dearly. They are the best people I know on this green earth). That being said, I was left to my own devices for almost all meals, every day. After elementary school, 5th grade and higher, I found myself having to imagine up two or three meals a day. I was not equipped with the information to make very healthy choices for a growing kid and forget about school or stores around me providing healthy options. I am so glad I found your channel and I just wish I had some information like this when I was growing up. Luckily, it is never too late :) I have had a weird relationship with food since then and it is healing every single day because of you. Thank you Abbey, so much. I can't thank you enough for sharing your knowledge and personality. It has literally changed my life.

I bet lots of these treats could be incorporated into meals that are healthy overall, like crushing up chips on top of a casserole or mac n' cheese bake. 🧀 Fritos "croutons" on top of burrito bowl or burrito salad are required. 🌯Maybe stick a few of the candies in a mug cake? 🍬

The bit about scurvy made me laugh - on a university work trip to South Africa one of the other students I was travelling with came down with a mysterious illness. Bleeding gums, pale, tired... The person running the training we were there for started panicing in case it was some kind of tropical disease. It turned out he had scurvy - to save money for beer and nights out he had eaten only brown sliced bread from the supermarket for a year! (This was a choice btw, you could eat very well on his beer budget). In the UK at the time (not sure about now) white bread had to be fortified with vitamins but brown bread didn't - if he'd only eaten white bread he wouldn't have had the problem. He was obviously referred to as Scurvy Mike by everyone on the trip for the rest of time.
