Rainbow S20E8 (1988) - FULL EPISODE

- Geoffrey takes George, Zippy and Bungle to visit Auntie - played by Carry On actress Patsy Rowlands - who has recently lost her job. Meanwhile, Rod, Jane and Freddy sing us a song about not letting things get us down, and there's a story about camels and their humps. The general theme is all about getting along with and understanding one another, and the clues available point to this episode as having been broadcast on Tuesday, 23rd February, 1988. According to the guides online, that would give this one the snappy title of "Social Behaviour: Group".
One thing that makes this episode unusual is that we get to see the main gang outside - that is, properly outside, in the real world, as Geoffrey drives them all to Auntie's house. I have visions of some drunk guy in the street swearing off the bottle for life that day, having seen that particular car go past.
Look out for some Children's ITV continuity at the beginning and end, featuring Gary Terzza and Debbie Shore at Network Control (my own personal Golden Age of Children's ITV presentation).

Rainbow was a national children's hit which everyone loved watching as part of CITV
It's great to see Rainbow tackling the important social issues of the day, such as widespread unemployment.
Yeah, it's only when you look back on these things that you really see what society was like at the time, and what problems it faced. Good for Rainbow for incorporating such things!

When my daughter was born , she was given Bongo as a little present , we named him Zippy by mistake . 29 years later , Zippy is doing well , he has a focked up eye though !

The song that Rod, Jane and Freddy sing is very reminiscent of the songs "Live It Up" by the Austrailian rock band Mental as Anything and "I Won't Back Down by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers
I also noticed a resemblance to Don’t Bring Me Down by ELO and This Must Be The Place by Talking Heads.

but that film was clearly shot earlier in the 80s. You can tell by the cars on the street.

I use to love watching Rainbow when I was a child seem to remember it use to be shown at lunchtime once per week during the late 80s/early 90s?
Yes, there were definitely lunchtime broadcasts of Rainbow, and a few other shows later repeated as part of Children's ITV. (Let's Pretend springs to mind. Puddle Lane, perhaps, and maybe the Giddy Game Show? I can't think of any more.)

@@pagrant Button Moon and Raggy Dolls (I think), too. Basically, there was a time when whatever was on on first on Children's ITV at 4pm was probably a repeat of a lunchtime showing.

Initially there were no plans for a second series of Zzzap! The reason Zzzap was created in the first place was to support Meridian as the new ITV broadcaster for the South East of England and to expand both Meridians’ and The Media Merchants’ children’s output - which was by January 1993 limited to 3 programmes (Zzzap, Wizadora and Eye of the Storm). Both Zzzap and Wizadora had proved successful and were recommissioned for new series. Series 2 of Wizadora was broadcast in Autumn - this time on the CITV slot.
The first series of Wizadora was broadcast during the predominately pre-school lunchtime slot (Other programmes sharing the slot included Tots TV and Allsorts. The lunchtime slot was previously used for pre-school Thames/ Ragdoll/ Central programmes such as Rainbow, Playbox, Rosie & Jim and Rod, Jane and Freddy). The slot was frequently not directly linked or mentioned as CITV - and was incorporated into afternoon CITV in September 1993.
That was actually a few months after the out-of-vision continuity service with Steve Ryde began (that had started in February and the preschool shift happened in September).
The presentation and idents for the first twenty minutes was different to the rest of the strand however, and there were four mascots: Abacat (who was a cat who counted on an Abacus, is that the one you remember?), Cheesy, Mr. Clockface and Ruskman, who all remained until Stephen & Danielle came along in 1998.
It was part of a substantial revamp of ITV daytime in Autumn 1993. Families was axed, the preschool programmes were merged into CITV, This Morning gained an extra 10 minutes as a result (the other ten minutes given to regional news) & Supermarket Sweep made it's debut at 9:25.

This episode of Rainbow was Social Behaviour Groups and it was originally shown at 11:10am on Tuesday 23rd February 1988 but this was a repeat from later that day.
Was just thinking that I had no memory of Rainbow being on the main tea time slot, but do not remember the lunch time CITV slot having any presenters

Haha, what I wouldn't give to see that car just casually going past as though it were the most normal thing in the world. Is Geoffrey still taxi driving these days? I have an idea for a booking. I watched an episode online recently of them all going on a camping break in the "real" world. The unfortunate sight of Geoffrey in a pair of shorts is permanently burnt into my retina.
I don't know if he's still driving a taxi, but Geoffrey popped up on Pointless Celebrities not so long ago - I think he and Sally James won the trophy, but not the jackpot. He seemed on good form, happily.
Geoffrey passed away this year.

Have no memories of Rainbow being on the afternoon slot of CITV….. I remember it was showing on the lunchtime slot between This Morning and the news, but that was not done with any in studio presenters
Yeah, for a while the first thing on CITV each afternoon was a repeat of something shown at lunchtime.
@@VideotapeFTW was that during that spell where they would show something from 3:45-4pm, before the main schedule started frpm 4 until 5:05? Vague memories of that in the late 80's.... sure the Riddlers were like this that it would get a shown at lunch time, and then start the afternoon slot (living in the Scottish TV network, we had a odd habit of getting a slot where it would show something in Gaelic.... when CITV started showing the Magic House in the early 90's, we never got it in English)
@@clark82 I definitely remember it from the latter half of the 80s, because I lived 30 seconds from my school gates at that point and often went home for lunch! I'm pretty sure it was part of the regular 4pm slot.
@@VideotapeFTW if it was on the afternoon slot, it might have been up to around 86ish…. No memory of it on after that when CITV seemed to look to aim for a slightly older audience (maybe the odd one was used, as ITV had a habit of using Thomas series 2, Telebugs and things like that as filler up to 1989)
Certainly remember that pre-school (I started primary school in 87) that it was only almost daily at lunch time… but I know by 90ish it was more Rosie and Jim, Riddlers and Tots TV that made up the lunch time slot before the lunchtime news.

I think you could be right that it changed soon after, possibly once the Gary and Debbie era of CITV came to an end that year. I'll have to search some more.
