That's awesome, my grandpa use to do this back in the 1910's - 1920's, that was way way before my time, lol, so it's cool to see how he would have did it. I have some of his marbled papers and always wondered how. He would do those scallops and peacock design thing to. Just beautifully amazing designs.

The magic is always there after watching for half an hour or more at Williamsburg VA. I was hooked and I looked for old books I could afford with Marbled Fly leafs and such, just to own the pages. I get lost in them every time I look at them.
I agree, to me it's even more magical when you see the process. I don't think it was understanding how it's done that ruined the magic for her, but more likely having done it so much for so long. Often when you turn art into a routine or a job it loses its magic, it becomes a chore.

All good questions.. Carageenan is used to thicken the water. Aluminum Sulphate is used to make the design bond permanently with the paper (paper is not special but I choose to use a Japanese printmaking paper called Masa) and drying takes about 45 minutes indoors and less outdoors. Use marbled paper for any project calling for decorative paper. I often cut it up to make book marks and note cards. I know of a woman who marbles very large paper and uses it for wallpaper!!
Hi, yes. I make unlimited prints from a tray full of carrageenan size. If there is any left when I’m done, I refrigerate it and begin again the next day. Nothing is wasted.
Heidi- Once you create a pattern and do your print, can you add more colours to the remaining water and print again? Kits include a 24 hr water thickening agent and it would seem like a waste for only 1 print. Thank you!

Good question. Some people use an eye dropper, but with my materials that does not work well--the paint will not float when applied with an eye dropper. My process is just one of many successful ways to marble.
I've tried with acrylic paint on tapwater, and oil thinned with turpentine, but it does not work for me. What do I have to do to make mine look like this, and be as firm as this?
Kenny, the paper will wrinkle somewhat. I use better paper, chosen with this in mind (see question above). After my papers are completely dry, they go under a cookie sheet with several heavy books piled on top for several days. This helps press out the wrinkles.

I notice many marbling techniques use an Alum size, but I want to stay away from that as I know it can make the papers of the book acidic. I had to recently repair some cover issues to a crumbling old book with exactly this problem, but sadly it can not be reversed. Sure. Using delicate colors or using less color creates a softer or less contrasting marbled paper. Calligraphy can certainly be applied on top of the paint. Try it and let me know!

Sure. Using delicate colors or using less color creates a softer or less contrasting marbled paper. Calligraphy can certainly be applied on top of the paint. Try it and let me know!
Heidi, I love the paper marbling, but in this video you didn't talk about the paper... what kind of paper do you use and do you have to treat it with Alum prior to laying it on the paint? TFS
Oh, there are so many things this video does not talk about! I plan to make more short videos addressing all of these things. Many artist-quality papers may be used successfully. Look for these things: Durability, flexibility, and absorbency. Yes, most paper types need alum.

I've seen artists turn the splotches in recognizable designs of things like flowers or animals. Is this set of tools capable of that or do you need other inks , media, brushes etc. Thank you.
All you need to make shapes is a stylus; meaning a stick of some kind--pencil, wooden dowel, twig from outside.

I'm trying to thicken water for acrylic paints to float on water..using sta flo liquid starch to have paint float to dip a long taper candle..paints are falling to bottom..what can I use to thicken a large amount of water enough to dip a long taper candle?
