    Chips happens not because you hit the botton with a metal spoon or spatula, it happens because when you heat the pot with medium to high heat the iron expands faster than the enammel and the enammel start to break with the time. The solution? heat your pot slowly with low heat and after a while turn it up to no more than medium heat. that way your DO will last for a life time.

    Mine was quite old and had many chips on the outside, and one small but to the iron chip on the inside. I emailed them and got nothing but run around. First it had to be cleaned, so they could see if had ever been overheated which apparently causes chips. I cleaned around the chip to show the light color, sent another picture then they said it must have been overheated because I couldn’t clean it totally. Then I was told warranty only covers manufacter defects , not everyday wear and tear. So I guess unless it comes chipped from the store it’s not covered.?? All I remember is the big “lifetime warranty against chipping” on the box, and don’t ever remember it saying you couldn’t cook on it at anything higher than med-low. Then they offered me a 50% off coupon, but to get it I had to ship them my old pot, which is stupidly heavy, and I had already sent them pictures before cleaning, and then after when they asked. What a rip off. I will buy a lesser known brand for a lot less money as the warranty is good for nothing.

    That wasn't my experience with Le Creuset . They pretty much told me to go to hell... never asked to see the pot or any details. Just said, We dont fix them, too bad. Oh and by the way, we will sell you a new pan for 200 Euros. A lifetime guarantee? PFFFT! Not even maybe. I'll never buy another one. Not worth the premium.

    I can tell you that the interior chip might have occurred if you went from high heat to a cold, or even lukewarm, water wash in the sink. Some people will throw their enamel cookware into a sink the moment they transfer out whatever was cooked in the pot. The extreme temp changes will not only chip the interior, but it might knock off chunks like what you have there. Personally, I buy Lodge because it's pretty high quality stuff at really affordable prices. But more importantly, if it gets messed up, I am not out a lot of money!

    • @cubancafe7867

      Savannah Land that's a great point also. That "Pampered Chef" stuff is also very delicate. When I was young, my roommate threw a hot pampered chef pizza stone into the sink and ran water on it and it immediately cracked in half! People sometimes don't realize how delicate cookware is. You'd think we learn this lesson the day we poured cold orange juice into a glass that was just washed in hot water - when we were 8 years old!

    • @RumbleFish69
      @RumbleFish69 4 роки тому +2

      Savannah Land That's true and they should address this more. The truth is that extreme temperature change for any piece of cookware, even stainless, can be pretty damaging over time. This is why blacksmiths put horseshoes in water directly from red hot heat. The extreme temperature change allows the horseshoe to become pliable. It's really just simple science. The reason people still do this is because they believe that cleaning cookware while it's hot, gives them a better chance of removing the stubborn food residue. I understand the logic but I don't do this myself. The truth is that soaking a pot that has already cooled is just as effective for removing food residue.

    • @woudgy
      @woudgy 2 роки тому

      @@RumbleFish69 using a temperature difference to remove grease-based residue can be very effective but you only need a couple of tablespoons of cool liquid; same principle as deglazing. No one should be running cold water from the tap directly into a hot container of any material.

    We have more than 20 pieces of enameled cast iron, (no Le Creuset) and I have never seen anything chip like that. We are pretty careful, but since we have so many and constantly switch them around instead of just using the same pot all the time, this could account for the lack of damage. We haven't worried about a warranty on our cookware since we buy 4 or 5 of the other brands for the cost of one Le Creuset. Most we get at closeout stores and we have quite the interesting plethora of colors. Good to know should we purchase Le Creuset, the warranty is there to protect your investment. Great info!

    It also has similar additional numbers on the right and left of the lid, and only says "France" below and 31 above so I imagine they are from around the same time.
    It looks vintage to me... however I am not 100% convinced it's authentic since in all the online guides it mentions that an original Le Creuset will have enamel on the rim of the pot and the lid, and not just the cast iron showing. But mine doesn't seem to have that...
    I would love it if you could tell me if yours does.
    Perhaps it chipped away over time and use... but it doesn't look to me like it was ever there.

    In the UK this is their policy: Defective cookware will be repaired or, if repair is not possible, replaced free of charge with a similar product or one of equivalent value if the original product is no longer in production. Please note that in the case of a set, only the faulty item will be replaced.

      @@getoffathatthing1 Lol, no. It’s just a regular bare cast iron Dutch oven underneath the enamel, and people cook with those all the time. The only concern with a chip on the cooking surface is if it is going to chip even more into your food.

      Yes dry cooking will void the warranty. All enamel companies have this rule I think. It can heavily darken the enamel and cause fractures as well

    Yes, stop using it! I used an off brand version of a pan that had an old chip in the bottom already, used it to cook dinner a few nights ago, and then discovered a SECOND chip AFTER I served my last heaping of leftovers on the 3rd night. UUUUUUUUGGHHHH... Somebody in my house ate glass last night!!! Nobody's bleeding yet... to be continued. LOL

      That’s fair. There are many good options in enamel cast iron. The Lodge pots are quite nice.

      That’s what I think. Spend that kind of money on a pot with a supposed lifetime warranty, then don’t use it over medium low heat or it could cause chipping? And then also get told it’s only warranted for manufacturers defects not everyday use or wear and tear! WTH

    Don't bother, just get a roll of NON-STICK kitchen foil, line the casserole with two large sheets, crossed over with non-stick inside, and even though you can not fry in it, you can do all that in a large frying pan, transfer it all to the lined casserole and cook in the oven as usual.

    Somebody dropped a large two pronged serving fork into your pot. (Or maybe metal meat tongs)
    That would explain the two chip marks.
