We find GOLD at the Chateau! - Doing It Ourselves

  • My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle.
We film and edit everything ourselves.
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.
Help me to keep making videos and restoring this building by visiting my patreon page.

Michael. My second comment is about your copper beech trees. Again, when I saw them I immediately reacted to the fact that when I was in California in the redwood forests, they refer to the circular growth pattern as Fairy Circles and believe that the circle of younger trees grew from the "Mother" tree which eventually died and left the young trees growing from her roots. And finally, the third comment is about your oak tree. The wild boars are possibly not only digging for acorns, but for truffles which grow on the roots of the French oak. That would be worth more than the "gold"!!

    • @keandric2765

@@Rafuschka You're only basing that assessment based on what it looks like Now after they've spent 3 years working on it, not what it looked like when they bought it. Based on the photos and footage Michael's show it seems like it was in Rough shape when they bought it, derelict in a lot of places. I wouldn't be surprised if they bought it for the same cost that a normal middleclass - uppermiddleclass home would cost. And part of the reason they've been able to Afford to do the work they've done so far based on everything they've said is because they've done almost all of it themselves; not only all of the renovations and maintenance/ cleaning but making all the curtains, doing the upholstery themselves, Michael said that Billy and Gwen had been collecting the furniture for like 5 years (probably from thrifting and antiquing) and restored it themselves. Also, as I mentioned the only way they're probably able to afford the taxes and maintenance and renovations and stuff for the place is by hosting weddings and renting out the guesthouse and things. The only reason they were probably even able to get the chateau was being of an inheritance (so I read someone say) and if they were just some average boring couple they probably would've bought some nice townhome or something in London and people would've thought "oh yeah that's nice" but it wouldn't have been anything out of the ordinary. Now, Could they have money / have already been upperclass before they bought it? Yeah sure of course. All I'M saying is that if you do something like this right [make sacrifices and save up, take your time to do your research, find something cheap that needs a lot of work, do said work yourself, host events to have the property pay for itself (or at least break even), maybe even go in with a number of family members or friends on a project like this, ect], you do Not have to necessarily be rich to do something like this :)

There might still be hope for your cherry tree. We nearly lost our nectarine tree due to ivy infiltration so we decided to cut the ivy back and the dead part of the tree just for a tidy up. Well, a year or so later it started sprouting from the bottom up and we now have nectarines again. We don’t know much about gardening but we certainly learnt a lesson about Ivy.
I have just come across your channel and Stephanie’s and can’t stop watching - they are so enjoyable.
    Wish you well 🌷🌷🌷

Don't dig up all the tennis court, just cut out squares and rectangles of the black top in different sizes, leaving a wide enough walking path of the court top, then build up a small wall about a foot tall around your cut-outs and then back fill the holes with rich soil filling up to the top of the little wall and voi-la, there you have it, a country raised garden!

Dear Mr. Petherick, thank you for this lovely vlog. It is so beautiful there. I felt as though I were accompanying you, your family, and your little dogs throughout. The wildflowers and creek are so pretty, and the gold panning, an adventure! I love the trees. It is fun to think about who planted them, and all the people who have enjoyed them over the years. I think some fruit trees only yield fruit every other year, but I'm not sure about 2 years. I hope the cherry isn't completely gone. The segment with Stephanie was adorable! I completely love both the little dogs. I look forward to seeing your next vlog! Stay well, safe and healthy.

The beautiful flower is Lathraea Clandestina or Purple Toothwort. It grows in the woods near streams and is native to Europe. Lucky you for finding gold! I am in San Francisco. Sometimes we go panning in Gold Country but have only managed to find Fool's Gold!! Stay healthy! We are sheltering in place.
