now that you understand that, take a look at where the people who own every record company is from. then you can try to visualize what country the money being stolen goes to.
Contracts. Involuntary slavery was abolished except under felony conviction. Contractual slavery is voluntary. Learn contract law before signing employment agreements.

Streetwise didn't have a single DAMN Loan. They gave the Group a measly $500 Advance( $1,800 today Which was pathetic and sleazy EVEN in 1982) and started skimming on all residuals,Likeness and profits made from Performances and Touring, The Recoupables were just a red herring, Starr knew the Group was going to be getting absolutely NO money from the LP. He and his Buddy were flowing it back into their own pockets. Even if they toured again to make back the Recoupable Expenses, that $1,500 that Streetwise owed NE was NEVER coming back. Before The Mothers SUED Streetwise, the label mysteriously folded up taking all of its unreported profits and ROE with them. Starr is a CROOK. A SNAKE. With Gary Evans/Bill Dern of Flighttime Productions/Jump N' Shoot, it was a bit different. Yes, Evans under the Guise of Jehri Busby and MCA Records STILL were charging the Recoupable Expenses, but he gave New Edition a Solid $2,000 Advance($4,800 in 2022 Dollars) PLUS assured a 5% cut on all sales of their 2nd and 3rd LP, the Mothers expected to see large Revenue and Net Profit, but in '85 were disappointed to find that the boys were only WELL OFF making about $9,000($18,000 today) each. But when New Edition were told what MCA and Flighttime's Projections/Jump N Shoot were for FY 1985, they were informed that they were going to have to tour extensively and do a COVER LP, it was clear that they weren't going to be exactly wealthy. After talking the boys into firing Bobby Brown in October 1985, Busby talked him into going Solo and he released "King of Stage" in the Fall of 1986. After the Cover LP was released in Early 1986, NE took a two year hiatus, we discover in that, Ralph was toying with the idea of going solo, but Busby informed him that they wanted to bring in a new member to replace Bobby who had just been signed to MCA in '86, after being dropped from Chrysalis Records, 19 year old D.C. native Johnny Gill. When Bobby hooked up with Babyface and L.A. Reid, he finally got the courage to fire Gary Evans/Bill Dern and leave Flighttime/Jump N' Shoot, New Edition followed suit in '87 when they hooked up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. In June of 1988, N.E. Heartbreak and Don't Be Cruel, finally became the Multi Platinum Gold Mine LPs that FINALLY assured NE and Brown that they would amass LARGE Revenue and a GIANT 40% cut on sales and royalties, first of all, MCA gave both NE and Bobby Brown a large $500k($1.4 million today) advance check each meaning, they were going to be receiving a WEALTHY advancement check. It took 5 years, but they were FINALLY making large money. All told, by 1989, N.E. Heartbreak and Don't Be Cruel had made around $5 Million in Sales. Meaning, each earned back $2.1 Million in Net Profits($5.6 million today). They were Millionaires by '89.
Jump 'n Shoot Productions signed NE to a production deal which is like legalized slavery where they get the money from all of the group's contracts first and hand it out to the members as they saw fit. NE thought that they were signed directly to MCA Records at the time. NE had to each pay $500,000 dollars to get out of that bad contract. Also, NE members owed the IRS $250,000 each (some owed a little more) due to bad accounting from Jump 'n Shoot. That's why Under The Blue Moon & NE Christmas albums profits were used to get them out of debt-contracts. NE didn't make any real money until their NE Heartbreak album in 1988. The music industry is demonic- Chaka Khan (on CNN)
The white dudes were Jump 'n Shoot Productions...they got rid of Brooke Payne as their manager then signed NE to a production contract (legalized slavery) instead of NE signing directly with MCA Records. Each NE member had to pay MCA Records $500,000 (2.5 million) in order to get out of their Jump 'n Shoot slave contract. Whether black or white or asian an industry devil is stil an industry snake. Good and bad people come in many different appearances. NE was ripped off by black and white folks early in their career.
IceManLikeGervin - The man himself said they each had to pay $100,000 (for a total of $500,000) to get out of the bad contract. Not $500,000 each. So why are you explaining something he already explained in the interview, but incorrectly?
What Ricky said is not the full truth. I heard that from Mike, Ronnie & Ricky's mouth in another interview. NE had to pay $2.5 million total plus they each had a huge tax debt to deal with. Under The Blue Moon & NE XMas album helped to clear those debts. They didn't see any real money until NE Heartbreak. Facts. BBD's Life After on TVOne spoke on it as well... Believe what you want to though...
RICKY is my favorite singer from NE, his tone is the coolest. .."It's Driving me out of my mind"!!!! 🔥 Every time he would come in even in Candy girl the song go's up a level...
+Carlos Rob You might be right, although I think Rick was always solid even if he didn't wow you vocally. But that's why I believe instead of putting ALL the lead vocal duties on one singer, other singers in a group should get to flex their vocal muscles.
This interview really puts their song "Boys to Men" into perspective. So when Napster hit the Net, it was the record companies that lost out, not the artists.
The record companies had it coming. And just think, they had the opportunity to own mp3 technology before people began using it. They dismissed mp3 tech because large bandwidth connections were not in wide use. But only 2 years later folks began getting DSL and cable modems. The bandwidth for high speed at the time was only 128kb to 256kb, which mean you could download an entire album in half an hour and the quality was cd comparable.
$1.87 Hell no the First 48 production would have been pulling up that night..I been on tour dancing and sweating my ass off different states somebody would had to pay with there life that night.
My Opinion very true, 😅🤣😂💀💀💀smh...unseen foolishness. fbi, cia they'd all be there because it would be a crime scene. I'd be on the show snapped on oxygen, from the movie they were on tour for about 6-8 months.
As a black man who writes comic books and is getting ready to get his own business at the end this month I would never be a singer because this is the particular one reason you don't make any money rest in peace to new edition
I can respect his wife being there so what's the problem with these negative ass comments y'all hating like that? that's his biz what I'm tripping on is how they got screwed out their money. That is sad.
🗣️🗣️🗣️As a Man bro let me tell you that ain't nobody hating on funny lookin azz Ricky Bell. But we ALL know the REAL reason why this broad stuck with him. If Ricky wasn't famous she would've jumped on another man's pipe quick! Just FACTS ON TOP OF FACTS💪🏼.
I saw New Edition in concert back in Gary, Indiana 1988...12 years old and watching girls pass out and me standing on the seats watching history being made...Still a HUGE fan of N. E. till this day
Actually the blame would fall on the parents. No one had a parent to read and study this new business/job that their own kids were involved in, and could have changed their lives much quicker. From projects to gated community.
so let me get this straight...a group of artists go on tour through where ever, make everybody else money, then get paid a dollar and eighty seven cent? and now one of them aint in jail for murder yet?
Brealfrank25 Yes. When you have a business meeting and don't care what the contract says... You deserve to be broke. Spend 1,000 dollars on a lawyer that will read the contract. The lawyer compares the contract to other contracts to see if it's a fair. Why would anyone believe a random persons going to take care of them? Companies aren't your mother. Buy a lawyer. Read the contract. Act like an adult.
Here’s the REAL TRUTH...their parents are responsible for this nonsense. They were MINOR’s. Their parents would have had to sign those contracts on their behalf so they didn’t read the contracts. That’s just a fact! Realistically, WHO did they think was financing the tour, food, housing, clothes, recordings, distribution, marketing etc? I’m a NE4L but the truth is the truth. It’s a sad story but it pays to read. They were in bad contracts for 20+ years....accountability is everything. They even got duped by Puff! They signed over their publishing...SHAMEFUL.
How do you know their parents knew how to read or were knowledgeable about that kind of stuff? have two college degrees and I can barely understand that legal mumbo jumbo that that the lawyers use to write contracts. They do that on purpose cuz they know most people can't understand what the hell those contracts are saying...
+JK number5 New Kids was Maurice Starr White Version of New Edition. He treated NKOTB better business wise than New Edition. NKOTB had commercials, endorsement deals etc. while New Edition did a bunch of work and had success with nothing to show for it financially.
Hopefully New Edition solo projects got them out the projects. N/E are the only group that broke up and went solo an still sold a million records on each solo project. Destiny Childs.. New Kids.. N'Sync and the Back Street Boys can never do that. I don't think we will ever see another successful group like New Edition ever in life
D/C??? which ones??? it's a whole lot of females that were in that group at different times{none but Beyoncé went platinum}. GREAT! albums from Beyoncé{Lemonade...her best work ever!!!} Kelly Rowland{Talk a Good Game...my favorite R&B album of 2013} & Le Toya Luckett{Back 2 Life...my favorite R&B album of 2017} but that's about it
To everyone negatively commenting about his wife...she was there holding his hand through the drugs, through the label financially screwing them over, losing their home, the ridiculous fans, the group fights, the hardships and etc. How many of you were there?????? Don’t worry I’ll wait 🤷♀️
manny bizzell jr lmbo...it’s like our momma always said...”Children can be so cruel!!!” Lol. This is a great example of “unconditional love” which is a love that many men and women today have forgotten about because thanks to the fakes on social media and the messy reality shows, they have life all the way screwed up. A lot of them are in their early 30’s and still acting like children and giving the younger generation a bad example of what a man/woman should be. Women are getting married to men based on the materialistic things they “think” he has and don’t have so much as a piece of bread to bring to the table. I feel black women today have adopted the “muppet” look, you know the aka “Miss Piggy” look...plastic surgery, collagen enhanced lips, drag queen makeup and hair...WTF!!!! I remember when we were proud to be “PCJammin” lol(remember the commercial)and we wore our own hair. Now shows like love and hip hop, basketball wives and etc have black women thinking unless your body is not pumped full of silicone then you’re a nobody. These young girls have no idea that these instacrabs, I’m sorry I meant Instagram models are really low key escorts who “accompany” rappers, ball players, businessmen and etc to prestigious corporate events and those women use Instagram to recruit other young women. I don’t do social media only UA-cam and pandora. On social media people lie and pretend to be who they’re not and I don’t want any affiliation with it. Plus it’s not helping to pay any bills over here lol. Best of luck to you and everyone here 💋✌️
help me understand: how could minors be legally allowed to sign deals with such impact? I wonder if they ever looked into this retrospectively in order to get some money back. this is crazy how they robbed these kids..
I'm a go on the record and say that Ricky has aged very well. That brother still look fresh. The music industry, them female groupies, drama with New Edition and etc., and Ricky still came out on the positive side. Good for him.
Not only that, their mother's was also uneducated and didn't know any better. If they knew they were throwing these kids to wolves they wouldn't have signed any contracts.
I was shocked about 8 years ago when Mike Bivins was working out in my gym on a regular basis. I eventually got to chat with him a couple of times, it's tragic how these guys were robbed blind!
LATE BLUMA sir mix a lot wasn’t a one hit wonder he had Plenty hits like a posse on Broadway,Square dance rap, Put them in a glass, etc just baby got back a lot attention that shadowed the other songs he did
@@Detrimental313 hip hop heads know that my G but mainstream doesn't. Vlad is a hip hop head who always talks about hits..listen to all his interviews he knows some shit but still speaks from a mainstream point of view.
I got a feeling some young artist is going to come along and buy NE's publishing and give it back to them. Remember when Michael Jackson bought the publishing of artists like Sly Stone, Little Richard, etc. He gave them their publishing back. NE may be old when it happens but they will get it though.
Not that many rich artists out there and are willing to do a buy and give on publishing. Jay, Diddy, Dre, Jermaine Dupri dont have heart a like Michael did.
Ricky, don’t even trip about not getting your royalties. They went low by cheating you guys, but you guys went high by staying together through thick and thin. The biopic of NE on bet gave us inside look of how you weathered the industry storm. With NE and the Bobby brown story may give hope to he mellenialgeneration that they need to take a step back and appreaciate real music. Your stories no doubt are going to give a resurgence to your music. I hope NE is working on a new album because you gonna need to calm the storm of hungry old fans and now new mellenialfans. That 1.87 about to go up with about 6 more zeros behind. So much want to see you on tour. Having your Boyz II men tour with you with your resurgence is going to open the floodgates for the 80’s/90’s sounds. Man does music need a repeat of this magnitude today. The only trouble is the wannabe artist of the last 20 years including both Justin’s are going to try and get in on the action. Millennials will just have to ask their parents to help them separate the real from the fake.
Ralph was one of my favourites, his voice was beautiful, his face and body was on my wall next to my bed.. big up right on magazine for all my best poster!
@The Weeknd Point blank and Period Bro! These females in the comments are idolizing this woman like she really is a ride or die chic when in actuality, the only reason she is sticking with Ricky Bell is because he is famous!
Ricky was always my favorite one.He still looks the same.Very attractive dude. Much peace & blessings to him and his wife. I dont know who got done worse New Edition or TLC.

My generation!! I grew up with these guys, same age and everything(i'm 9 days older than Ralph). Almost every black teenage girl around the country at the time(80's) went crazy over these guys. In the early-mid 80's every black magazine, radio and video show had an article, performance, or interview about the New Edition. Most musicians who had this impact on the entertainment industry are already in the Rock-n-Roll hall of fame. IT'S TIME THEY GET THEIR DUE!!
I ain't even going to lie, I watch about two seconds of this interview then went straight to the comments to see who was going to talk about how zesty Ricky Bell is acting! lol
When I first saw the title I thought it was "only 1.87 million". But literally 1.87 dollars was beyond my imagination, Damn! These music industry snakes make Don King look like a saint.
Vlad trying to make Ricky feel sick saying "Mix a lot made $100000 from baby got back because he owned his publishing" then giggles after Ricky saying there publishing got robbed from them.
The Band was doing nightclub shows. Not arena tours. In the early 80's, clubs would pay maybe $1,000 for a 3 song set. $1,500 tops. They only had 3 songs. Popcorn Love, Is This The End, and Candy Girl. They had expenses. The Band got a per diem. They had to pay for travel for the entourage of people who traveled with them. Larry Johnson and Arthur Baker probably took 25%, each, right off the top. That leaves half of the money. Then Maurice Starr Productions and Streetwise Records followed with recuperating all of the production and promotion costs. Candy Girl had a music video. And, they had to pay taxes. I'm surprised that they didn't get a bill, with a statement that they owed the label money.
The NE heartbeat that this group experienced is no different from Chuck Berry, Jackie Wilson, NWA, TLC and just about every Black recording artists have faced when trying to escape the struggles of living in the hood. It's easy to blame their parents but remember they were also struggling and many artists are threatened with agree with the terms, you, sign now or they'll find someone else, so they cast their fate to the wind. M. Bivens, thankfully caught on and when they did protest they were kicked aside for New Kids. Although they're talent kept them from total bankruptcy, we must all be mindful to resist judging someone else's experience.
This is nothing new.. same thing happens to many actors/actresses from back in the day.. Ppl like Gary Coleman, Todd Bridges, the cast from What's Happening, Sandford n Son.. Do you think any of them are getting any residuals from DVD sales or reruns on TV 🙄
One of the most humble artist to ever exist! And so underrated! And its amazing that he's telling this story and flames aren't coming out of his ears!!! Tells you ALOT about Ricky Bell. Ask Vanilla Ice similar questions and you'll get at least 10 F-bombs dues to what happen to him.

I would have told my manager “COOL IT NOW” and give me my damn money. Of course we can’t “STAND THE RAIN” with a $1.87. “IF IT ISN’T LOVE” let us out this contract. This shit is just “POISON” 🤷🏾♂️
$1.87 for what? Getting paid $1.87 for ANYTHING is an insult. You can't legally pay someone $1.87 for ANY WORK that makes absolutely NO SENSE? How can someone send you a $1.87 for the lowest man working on a tour much less the headlining singers? WTH?
WOW! THATS SAD THY GOT ROBBED EARLY IN. but those guys got a hella catalog. and those guys can put on one of the best shows ever. So hopefully they can get some of what they deserve!!
His wife deserves to be there because she was with him through his addiction and did not leave him she could have sold his story to any media outlet to make him look bad and for her to get some money but she has stayed with this man this long she's not going nowhere she went with him to make sure the interview glad didn't say something or bring up something that could trigger her man to go out and get a bump she did anything that any woman who loves her husband respects him as her husband and to protect her husband that's why she deserved to be there and I don't blame her because if I was a black woman was sitting next to him I still would have been sitting in that chair like the wife was I ain't got no complaints I don't have nothing slick to say I got respect for her just because she had her husband her best friend and her King as she was sitting right there watching everything much respect to her cuz I'm pretty sure he took her through straight up hell only things that she and he know about so yes she deserved to be at that interview ❤️❤️💯✌️✌️ quick question y'all what were yours to favorite new addition songs mine was cool it, and Mr telephone Man, my favorite Bell biv DeVoe song Poison 🎤🎶🎶🙏✌️
I thought the movie did show them getting off the tour bus in the projects? Now I have an excuse to watch again LOL. I have much respect for Mr. Bell on his contributions to the group, and the personal challenges he overcame.

Facts
I want to sign with jump n shoot with a cash money records joint venture how much promotion u think that I'll get?
So sad they got ripped off. A bunch of white no talent having mofos sit back and get rich off of their labor.
Believe what you want to though...
ricky sang his butt off on when will I see you smile again remix he really showed he could sing lead & not in spots.
He did and I love that song. I blast in my car lol
I always thought Ricky actually had a better voice than Ralph and Bobby he just didn't have that "it" that those 2 had
RICKY is my favorite singer from NE, his tone is the coolest. .."It's Driving me out of my mind"!!!! 🔥

@@deerob8829 ...Na he had to work on his voice and his voice got better over the years
+Carlos Rob You might be right, although I think Rick was always solid even if he didn't wow you vocally. But that's why I believe instead of putting ALL the lead vocal duties on one singer, other singers in a group should get to flex their vocal muscles.
This interview really puts their song "Boys to Men" into perspective. So when Napster hit the Net, it was the record companies that lost out, not the artists.
Exactly
+Cloudsleyy Falconbridge #Truth
The record companies had it coming. And just think, they had the opportunity to own mp3 technology before people began using it. They dismissed mp3 tech because large bandwidth connections were not in wide use. But only 2 years later folks began getting DSL and cable modems. The bandwidth for high speed at the time was only 128kb to 256kb, which mean you could download an entire album in half an hour and the quality was cd comparable.
Yep
Of course.

Man I’m so sorry you all went through that! It’s not right. You all are so talented. I hope you get back double for your trouble.
That's a damn shame they screwed those kids like that. It'll make it real hard to listen to that era of New Edition even tho the songs are classics

I saw New Edition in concert back in Gary, Indiana 1988...12 years old and watching girls pass out and me standing on the seats watching history being made...Still a HUGE fan of N. E. till this day
Ricky Bell is a really cool cat met him back in the day. These brothers were all very humble brothers.
they did show the bus letting y'all back off into the projects
I thought so too
lmao i was thinking the same thing rick u still on drugs? you dont remember boss?

Actually the blame would fall on the parents. No one had a parent to read and study this new business/job that their own kids were involved in, and could have changed their lives much quicker. From projects to gated community.
This piss me off and it has nothing to do with me
Exactly... I was mad for him. While he was laughing everything off. Like what can I do about it now.
Yeah me to better to be piss off than piss on😞

This is a good interview. Ricky has lived thru it and can speak from experience.
He would be a good tour manager.
He's so humble😇
so let me get this straight...a group of artists go on tour through where ever, make everybody else money, then get paid a dollar and eighty seven cent? and now one of them aint in jail for murder yet?
Brealfrank25 😂😂😂
Brealfrank25 they better men than me lol
😆
Brooke Payne taught them how to compose themselves well.
It's always shocking to hear these stories. And we've been hearing these stories for years.
microcosm of black people as a whole in America
I'm just so amazed how youthful they still look after all these years. Ricky to me looks better now than he did when he was younger.
New kids on the blocc???lol. There's only one and that's New Edition
I don't think we will ever see another successful group like New Edition ever in life
Destiny's Child did it. They all did well going solo and came back together to do the last album, "Destiny Fulfilled".
D/C??? which ones??? it's a whole lot of females that were in that group at different times{none but Beyoncé went platinum}. GREAT! albums from Beyoncé{Lemonade...her best work ever!!!} Kelly Rowland{Talk a Good Game...my favorite R&B album of 2013} & Le Toya Luckett{Back 2 Life...my favorite R&B album of 2017} but that's about it

manny bizzell jr lmbo...it’s like our momma always said...”Children can be so cruel!!!” Lol. Best of luck to you and everyone here 💋✌️
She is also an singer/actress. She was in a group with meagn Good and her sister. I thing it was Bad Girls or something like that.

Citizen Kane Good Point.
🗣️ Uhm Their parents signed contacts too!
I'm a go on the record and say that Ricky has aged very well. That brother still look fresh. The music industry, them female groupies, drama with New Edition and etc., and Ricky still came out on the positive side. Good for him.
He seems like a nice guy. I hope that he gets his life and finances straightened out.

This is why these producers look for young people living in poverty because they know that many of them are not well Learned!!!
They were kids!
Not only that, their mother's was also uneducated and didn't know any better. If they knew they were throwing these kids to wolves they wouldn't have signed any contracts.
No wonder why Bobby Brown bailed on these fools! $1.87?? Yeah, there woulda been a murder alright after getting that check! LOL

$1.87. Do you understand how greedy a music executive would have to be to leave the talent with $1.87? Smh.
Streetwise did have a single DAMN Loan. Even if they toured again to make back the Recoupable Expenses(they DID in Early '84 and got back only $25), that $1,500 that Streetwise owed NE was NEVER coming back.
Yes, Evans under the Guise of Jehri Busby and MCA Records STILL were charging the Recoupable Expenses, but he gave New Edition a Solid $2,000 Advance($4,800 in 2022 Dollars) PLUS assured a 5% cut on all sales of their 2nd and 3rd LP, the Mothers expected to see large Revenue and Net Profit, but in '85 were disappointed to find that the boys were only WELL OFF making about $9,000($18,000 today). But when New Edition were told what MCA and Flighttime's Projections were for FY 1985, they were informed that they were going to have to tour extensively and do a COVER LP, it was clear that they weren't going to be exactly wealthy.
After talking the boys into firing Bobby Brown in October 1985, Busby talked him into going Solo and he released "King of Stage" in the Fall of 1986.

He said he wished the movie showed them getting dropped off in the projects from the tour bus, it did show that.
