      Production deals are legalized slavery...but nowadays the record labels have 360 deals which they own the artist not only in music but anything else that they do outside of music...

      now that you understand that, take a look at where the people who own every record company is from. then you can try to visualize what country the money being stolen goes to.

      HEAT1996 - Let's not act like Bobby is some kind of saint. He had something like 6 or 7 kids with several different women, and has admitted to being unfaithful. I certainly have no interest in being "down" for a man like that. It takes more than being masculine for someone to be considered a real man. Some guys seem to think that they're entitled to a good woman, as if it's their birth right or something. If the roles were reversed, many of you would be tearing down a woman who had 6 or 7 kids with different fathers. I'm sure you would place her in the "ho" category that you previously mentioned.

      Streetwise didn't have a single DAMN Loan. They gave the Group a measly $500 Advance( $1,800 today Which was pathetic and sleazy EVEN in 1982) and started skimming on all residuals,Likeness and profits made from Performances and Touring, The Recoupables were just a red herring, Starr knew the Group was going to be getting absolutely NO money from the LP. He and his Buddy were flowing it back into their own pockets. Even if they toured again to make back the Recoupable Expenses, that $1,500 that Streetwise owed NE was NEVER coming back. Before The Mothers SUED Streetwise, the label mysteriously folded up taking all of its unreported profits and ROE with them.
      Starr is a CROOK. A SNAKE.
      With Gary Evans/Bill Dern of Flighttime Productions/Jump N' Shoot, it was a bit different. Yes, Evans under the Guise of Jehri Busby and MCA Records STILL were charging the Recoupable Expenses, but he gave New Edition a Solid $2,000 Advance($4,800 in 2022 Dollars) PLUS assured a 5% cut on all sales of their 2nd and 3rd LP, the Mothers expected to see large Revenue and Net Profit, but in '85 were disappointed to find that the boys were only WELL OFF making about $9,000($18,000 today) each. But when New Edition were told what MCA and Flighttime's Projections/Jump N Shoot were for FY 1985, they were informed that they were going to have to tour extensively and do a COVER LP, it was clear that they weren't going to be exactly wealthy.
      After talking the boys into firing Bobby Brown in October 1985, Busby talked him into going Solo and he released "King of Stage" in the Fall of 1986. After the Cover LP was released in Early 1986, NE took a two year hiatus, we discover in that, Ralph was toying with the idea of going solo, but Busby informed him that they wanted to bring in a new member to replace Bobby who had just been signed to MCA in '86, after being dropped from Chrysalis Records, 19 year old D.C. native Johnny Gill.
      When Bobby hooked up with Babyface and L.A. Reid, he finally got the courage to fire Gary Evans/Bill Dern and leave Flighttime/Jump N' Shoot, New Edition followed suit in '87 when they hooked up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
      In June of 1988, N.E. Heartbreak and Don't Be Cruel, finally became the Multi Platinum Gold Mine LPs that FINALLY assured NE and Brown that they would amass LARGE Revenue and a GIANT 40% cut on sales and royalties, first of all, MCA gave both NE and Bobby Brown a large $500k($1.4 million today) advance check each meaning, they were going to be receiving a WEALTHY advancement check. It took 5 years, but they were FINALLY making large money.
      All told, by 1989, N.E. Heartbreak and Don't Be Cruel had made around $5 Million in Sales. Meaning, each earned back $2.1 Million in Net Profits($5.6 million today). They were Millionaires by '89.

      The record companies had it coming. And just think, they had the opportunity to own mp3 technology before people began using it. They dismissed mp3 tech because large bandwidth connections were not in wide use. But only 2 years later folks began getting DSL and cable modems. The bandwidth for high speed at the time was only 128kb to 256kb, which mean you could download an entire album in half an hour and the quality was cd comparable.

    Jump 'n Shoot Productions signed NE to a production deal which is like legalized slavery where they get the money from all of the group's contracts first and hand it out to the members as they saw fit. NE thought that they were signed directly to MCA Records at the time. NE had to each pay $500,000 dollars to get out of that bad contract. Also, NE members owed the IRS $250,000 each (some owed a little more) due to bad accounting from Jump 'n Shoot. That's why Under The Blue Moon & NE Christmas albums profits were used to get them out of debt-contracts. NE didn't make any real money until their NE Heartbreak album in 1988. The music industry is demonic- Chaka Khan (on CNN)

    • @IceManLikeGervin

      The white dudes were Jump 'n Shoot Productions...they got rid of Brooke Payne as their manager then signed NE to a production contract (legalized slavery) instead of NE signing directly with MCA Records. Each NE member had to pay MCA Records $500,000 (2.5 million) in order to get out of their Jump 'n Shoot slave contract. Whether black or white or asian an industry devil is stil an industry snake. Good and bad people come in many different appearances. NE was ripped off by black and white folks early in their career.

    • @IceManLikeGervin
      @IceManLikeGervin 6 років тому +4

      What Ricky said is not the full truth. I heard that from Mike, Ronnie & Ricky's mouth in another interview. NE had to pay $2.5 million total plus they each had a huge tax debt to deal with. Under The Blue Moon & NE XMas album helped to clear those debts. They didn't see any real money until NE Heartbreak. Facts. BBD's Life After on TVOne spoke on it as well... manny bizzell jr lmbo...it’s like our momma always said...”Children can be so cruel!!!” Lol. This is a great example of “unconditional love” which is a love that many men and women today have forgotten about because thanks to the fakes on social media and the messy reality shows, they have life all the way screwed up. A lot of them are in their early 30’s and still acting like children and giving the younger generation a bad example of what a man/woman should be. Women are getting married to men based on the materialistic things they “think” he has and don’t have so much as a piece of bread to bring to the table. I feel black women today have adopted the “muppet” look, you know the aka “Miss Piggy” look...plastic surgery, collagen enhanced lips, drag queen makeup and hair...WTF!!!! I remember when we were proud to be “PCJammin” lol(remember the commercial)and we wore our own hair. Now shows like love and hip hop, basketball wives and etc have black women thinking unless your body is not pumped full of silicone then you’re a nobody. These young girls have no idea that these instacrabs, I’m sorry I meant Instagram models are really low key escorts who “accompany” rappers, ball players, businessmen and etc to prestigious corporate events and those women use Instagram to recruit other young women. I don’t do social media only UA-cam and pandora. On social media people lie and pretend to be who they’re not and I don’t want any affiliation with it. Plus it’s not helping to pay any bills over here lol. Best of luck to you and everyone here 💋✌️

    I’m a NE4L but the truth is the truth. It’s a sad story but it pays to read. They were in bad contracts for 20+ years....accountability is everything. They even got duped by Puff! They signed over their publishing...SHAMEFUL.

      How do you know their parents knew how to read or were knowledgeable about that kind of stuff? have two college degrees and I can barely understand that legal mumbo jumbo that that the lawyers use to write contracts. They do that on purpose cuz they know most people can't understand what the hell those contracts are saying...

    The NE heartbeat that this group experienced is no different from Chuck Berry, Jackie Wilson, NWA, TLC and just about every Black recording artists have faced when trying to escape the struggles of living in the hood. It's easy to blame their parents but remember they were also struggling and many artists are threatened with agree with the terms, you, sign now or they'll find someone else, so they cast their fate to the wind. M. Bivens, thankfully caught on and when they did protest they were kicked aside for New Kids. Although they're talent kept them from total bankruptcy, we must all be mindful to resist judging someone else's experience.

      Streetwise did have a single DAMN Loan. Even if they toured again to make back the Recoupable Expenses(they DID in Early '84 and got back only $25), that $1,500 that Streetwise owed NE was NEVER coming back.
Yes, Evans under the Guise of Jehri Busby and MCA Records STILL were charging the Recoupable Expenses, but he gave New Edition a Solid $2,000 Advance($4,800 in 2022 Dollars) PLUS assured a 5% cut on all sales of their 2nd and 3rd LP, the Mothers expected to see large Revenue and Net Profit, but in '85 were disappointed to find that the boys were only WELL OFF making about $9,000($18,000 today). But when New Edition were told what MCA and Flighttime's Projections were for FY 1985, they were informed that they were going to have to tour extensively and do a COVER LP, it was clear that they weren't going to be exactly wealthy.
Reid, he finally got the courage to fire Gary Evans and leave Flighttime, New Edition followed suit in '87 when they hooked up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

  • @drunization
    @drunization 6 років тому +5

    Ricky, don’t even trip about not getting your royalties. They went low by cheating you guys, but you guys went high by staying together through thick and thin. The biopic of NE on bet gave us inside look of how you weathered the industry storm. With NE and the Bobby brown story may give hope to he mellenialgeneration that they need to take a step back and appreaciate real music. Your stories no doubt are going to give a resurgence to your music. I hope NE is working on a new album because you gonna need to calm the storm of hungry old fans and now new mellenialfans. That 1.87 about to go up with about 6 more zeros behind. So much want to see you on tour. Having your Boyz II men tour with you with your resurgence is going to open the floodgates for the 80’s/90’s sounds. Man does music need a repeat of this magnitude today. The only trouble is the wannabe artist of the last 20 years including both Justin’s are going to try and get in on the action. Millennials will just have to ask their parents to help them separate the real from the fake.

    The Band was doing nightclub shows. Not arena tours. In the early 80's, clubs would pay maybe $1,000 for a 3 song set. $1,500 tops. They only had 3 songs. Popcorn Love, Is This The End, and Candy Girl. They had expenses. The Band got a per diem. They had to pay for travel for the entourage of people who traveled with them. Larry Johnson and Arthur Baker probably took 25%, each, right off the top. That leaves half of the money. Then Maurice Starr Productions and Streetwise Records followed with recuperating all of the production and promotion costs. Candy Girl had a music video. And, they had to pay taxes. I'm surprised that they didn't get a bill, with a statement that they owed the label money.

    My generation!! I grew up with these guys, same age and everything(i'm 9 days older than Ralph). Almost every black teenage girl around the country at the time(80's) went crazy over these guys. In the early-mid 80's every black magazine, radio and video show had an article, performance, or interview about the New Edition. Most musicians who had this impact on the entertainment industry are already in the Rock-n-Roll hall of fame. IT'S TIME THEY GET THEIR DUE!!

    No Royalty Cheques 😡😡😡 the bastards....how could they be soooo dishonest with the guys in New Edition. Like Ricky said that’s what happens unfortunately when you don’t read your contracts and when you just don’t know what you are signing! Damn shame 🤨

    From the comments below, it seems that people aren't aware that record companies have been doing this for generations. And disproportionally to ignorant young black artists. Most of the popular genres of musical styles were formulated and developed within the black community, and then controlled by these companies. It was only in the late 80's and early 90's that more and more black artists began taking control of their finances.

    Wow, it would have been so much cheaper to hire a lawyer to read through the contract before signing. They would not have been broke if they did. It's tragic what ignorance can do.

      When you receive a check for $1.87 after your baby has been gone for months, that's when you start to ask questions! Not go deeper in. A lie is a lie is a lie. I would do everything I could to ensure it would NEVER happen again!!

      They probably used scare tactics like if you don't do it now.... You have to do it while they're hot. We can go down the street and get 10 more kids just like them..... smh
