how to fill in the background

Make sure you draw a box around the entire slide (just outside of the page so you can't see the line) and as long as it's a complete shape (with no gaps) you can paint fill the background like that.

Or if you'd rather you can change the Slide Background colour by tapping the Format Paintbrush then selecting Slide Background.
