    Neat. I saw a comet once with my eye some years ago in San Francisco. It appeared high in the sky. A fuzzy star with a tail that stretched halfway across the sky. Was visible in the city. Had no telescope at that time.

    Given that this comet has SO few transits, the tail will be ''strong'' ie not burnt off after many sun encounters. So no wonder some are saying it could be Mag -5!

  • @steveboguslawski114
    @steveboguslawski114 День тому

    The 'bending" of the tail has nothing to do with the Earth's atmosphere. The comet is not in the atmosphere, it is in orbit around the Sun and millions of miles away.
    Comets often have 2 tails. One is made up of ejected dust from comet, and the other tail is made from gas. Both are pushed away from the sun by solar wind. Solar wind consists of particles emitted at high speed from the Sun, such as protons, electrons, and alpha particles. Solar wind interacts with each tail differently. Gas becomes ionized (electrically charged) and the charged particles are strongly attracted to oppositely charged particles in the wind and go along for the ride. When it can be seen the ion tail is a bluish straight line which points directly away from the Sun. Dust particles do not interact as strongly with the solar wind, and essentially spread out away from the comet in all directions before being gradually diverted. The dust tail can be curved because dust can remain near the orbital path of the comet for a long time while the ion tail is always pointing away from the Sun, and those two directions are not the same. The angular difference between the dust and gas tails change as the comet moves along its orbit. How well we can see the "curve" depends on where Earth is in relation to the comet. Some viewing angles allow the curve to be seen better than others, and that is entirely dependent on where each is in its orbit.

    I've always wondered why did humans wander out of Africa? Maybe the lions were too hungry? Or the gorilla told them to leave? I also wonder what do animals think when they notice celestial events?

      October 12th, is when it comes back around, September 27th, wasn’t anything spectacular, you need a Camera with Long Exposure to see it or a Telescope, or something to zoom in with at Sunrise, it wasn’t anything crazy, but the Main event is leading to October 12th, You & many others still have a chance.

      @abel3557 i perfectly understand skepticism over institutional communications. The skills we all should develop and train nowadays are to distinguish what should be accepted and what to be held for review. A simple research would answer the doubt and provide knowledge to the researcher about why they can calculate orbits, speed and time of a comet. Furthermore would provide better awareness of the Universe we live.
