The video that brought me to DCS. The sounds, the graphic, how real all is. The whole mission. If you can fly the MiG in DCS than you can it in real life, except to handle the G-Force. This game is extreme realistic.
+Robert Boiteau More to the point, you can flick a switch on the right hand panel - I'd have to check which, it's been a while since I last flew the '21 - to silence the thing.
As a former B52 pilot, flying 50 missions over Viet Nam, it is interesting to me reading the comments. First of all, our Arc Light missions were all flown over south Viet Nam and no fighter escort. Secondly our planes were not spaced out as depicted in the video. Either we flew in three ship formations or had individual missions. I have been chased by a Mig 21, but that was in another aircraft. I flew an unarmed recon RB66 and could out maneuver the Mig. They had to be able to lock on to me for four seconds prior to release of a missile. All I had to do was detect the lock on and due an evasive maneuver, and watch them have to start all over. Did this for 45 minutes before returning to base. It was kind of funny watching them look around to see where I went.
+Jim Davis My dad was a radar nav on them during the 90s. Y'all didn't fly with any fighter escort in Nam? Heck if y'all had I'm sure it would have made at least small difference

I facepalm every time I see someone take more than a minute to start this fighter, especially in a rush.. Don't flip everything at the start, comrade, it takes 45 seconds for the engine to spool up, use that time to turn things on.. And your heading, radionavigation, everything, it takes like 5 minutes to taxi to the runway, you can do that then, it's a scramble, the security of the soviet union depends on your ability to quickly react to a surprise attack! C'mon man, :D
That's utter bullshit. He did it textbook, like a real MiG-21bis pilot instructed to do it (except for taxying with an open pit and using the auxiliary Pitot tube instead of the main one). You turn nothing on while the engine spools up! Not before the engine hasn't idled, in order to avoid electrical overloads possibly leading to an interruption of the engine start up procedure, imagine that! So, within those 45 sec you gotta wait and kindly do nothing except for checking if everything works like a charme so far. And first then you turn on the avionics and every other power consumers checking again if all others systems are working properly as well *BEFORE* you taxi anywhere! You're not ready to taxi as long you haven't made sure that all systems are working as intended! If not, there's still a chance to call the ground crew! But smart alecks like you and your kind would rather risk to block the taxiway or even the runway just because the stupids eventually figured out on their useless way to the holding point that a system failed and their darn MiG isn't ready to take off let alone to fight anybody anyway. You'd call the ground crew to pick you up from the runway, right? That would have been the first as well as the very last time, that you had flown a fighter jet. Keep facepalming, but maybe a tad harder next time, maybe then even you will get the meaning behind those fixed procedures. Who knows. But don't give other people, who wanna enjoy this module and do everything as much and as realisticly as possible, your silly gaming advices if you don't have a clue of the realistic way how to do it. You're obviously not a MiG-21 pilot. But here comes a quote of a real MiG-21bis pilot, unlike yourself, who is, as ill luck would have it, also the author of Letherneck's MiG-21bis manual: _"Known for its short start-up time, the MiG-21 was often used in last minute during real emergency operations: usually, early warning (EW) crews postpone the decision to scramble MiG-21 fighters until the last moment. This usually led to a _*_“rush”_*_ among 21 crews who were trying to spare some time during the start-up and taxi procedures in order to compensate the EW crews’ lost time._ _Sometimes _*_this led to problems in aircraft systems operations eventually causing a mission abortion. *After many such occasions, 21 pilots adopted a rule:_*_ “You can not compensate time that someone else already wasted. _*_Never rush!_*_”_ Got it?! They did have a short startup. those migs would be on the roll every time our fighters could get anywhere close to their bases during the Vietnam war. They would roll off dump there tanks and be gone before any growling side winder in your ear. Not that those were accurate back then anyway. Most would slide off the rail and go stupid anyway.
An aircraft standing by for scramble would already be setup to take off quickly with the switches set in the go position before the pilot gets in where possible. Guess it is not possible to set a default position for the switches?
I haven't flown anything in DCS 1.5.x for quite a while, 2.x is sooo nice... But, this module kicks absolute ass. Everything in it is just so convincing!
