I will forever defend this game. Compared to any other Tomb Raider, I'm obsessed with Underworld for years. Love the movement, Lara in this game is the best. She's actually prepared for her explorations unlike the new ones where she only gets herself in trouble and that's why she has to use a bow. The game art, story, Lara's sassiness, outfits, just her being a badass, I love everything about it!
Steve of Warr talks about how to run the Underworld DLC's on PC in his TR Retrospective: Tomb Raider Underworld video with appropriate links in the description.
I enjoyed it more than most. But the ship parts were pretty dull, as are similar human inhabitant levels in other Tomb Raider games. Tomb Raider always strikes best when exploring new exotic places and long forgotten tombs.
I liked it and enjoyed it. Yeah, it's short. But Lara looks incredible, especially in that swimsuit. Yowza! Globe trotting, some nice physics based puzzles, gorgeous locations, lots of climbing. Classic Lara!
Great video, congrats! 👏I'm sad Underworld doesn't get more love, it's by far my favorite out of the LAU trilogy, and it really hits that Tomb Raider adventure exploration spot perfectly. If you want to play the dlc, you should check the description of Steve Of Warr's Underworld review video, it's super handy 👍Thanks for the video, you have a really great channel! Cheers!
I liked it. Played through it a couple of times back in 2009 on my PS3. Good game, but just had something missing, and certainly not a game I play regularly or go back to a lot like the older games.
Maybe better story conclusion that would rival Uncharted series. I always felt that there was something there - but just not as developed as it was supposed to be. Idk...
This was the very first TR game I played and I enjoyed the heck out of it. I 100% the game. It was fun spending hours exploring and solving puzzles, doing all the battles. And the music is incredible! Granted it's not the most difficult of game but it had just the right amount of challenge for me. Thank you for the video!
I actually gave this game a chance over the weekend, it's very fun. The camera and controls are a bit janky but it is very fun. I'm only halfway through the game but I'm loving it so far.
The game itself was alright. I finished it few times. It was way better to end the trilogy than modern Tomb Raider. Lara's relation with Amanda was iconic way of righting characters to me.
I only played Underworld once, but had a very positive experience with it. I enjoyed it far more than Legend, which I found a very underwhelming game. I think it felt like it had that Tomb Raider spirit a lot more than Legend did. Felt like there was more actual exploring and puzzle solving going on in old and ancient locations, with just the right amount of exploring and combat. I really liked it. Am yet to play Anniversary.
You essentially wrapped up what I feel about this game. You might like Anniversary - because it holds the spirit of Tomb Raider 1 quite well. Still better then Legend.
Underworld was my first PS3 game back then and I loved it. it was also one of the few games that looked much better and was in higher resolution on PS3 than on the Xbox360. In general, the Legend trilogy (Legend, Anniversary and Underworld) was and is the best three Tomb Raider games ever for me.
Literally playing through this game for the first time too in the past week and it's so GOOD! You can feel the jank, and where a lot of things lack polish, but outside of combat and certain platforming the game really is gorgeous and shines. There is one very game breaking bug in Mexico (If you know you know...) so I had to restart the whole level (Simply DO NOT DIE and you won't get the glitch), but otherwise there is nothing jarring. Having it on Xbox myself though, it feels weird being able to get the DLC whereas other platforms can't...? Strange decision.
I LOVE THIS GAME. I love it, best lara, best levels, best mechanics. Idk why it's so underrated cause it's perfect. If only tomb raider games were just underworld in the following years
I found Tomb raider underworld the best overall and the last best Tomb raider game ever made, especially that little after completing the game you can play as Dark Lara and she is so cool that made me wish they made the next tomb riader game a 2 player coop either with or without a human , by switching beteen Lara and Dark Lara to complete puzzles. What a shame missed opportunity in life.
Don't know if it's a hot take. I prefer Tomb Raider Underworld than Shadow of the Tomb Raider. For a completionist, shadow can get very tedious and the story is very mild compared to Underworld. The voice actor Keeley Hawes for the Legend trilogy is awesome. 🤘
I liked backtracking to the beginning of a level only when the path to exit was markedly different from the path to enter. Seeing levels from another perspective on the way out can be nice, but it needs to engage you differently, show you something new, and would've been nice opportunities for boss fights if the game had any. It's one of the TR's where the technical issues overshadowed its highlights in being one of the most "Tomb Raider" Tomb Raiders by Crystal. The bugs, glitches, and lack of polish buried its potential to have some of the most creative puzzle-platforming segments in the series. The undercooked combat mechanics also meant that the devs totally did away with the concept of "the boss fight" which is a shame. Sequel in a new engine, demanded in a short time; always spelling disaster.
i love underworld, but personally i think that laras animations were slightly weird. in the other 2 games in the legend trilogy they were very smooth but in underworld i felt like they were a bit stiff
I think I figured out what it is. She's got alot of great motion capture animations, but when it transitions in between, it's less polished. One example I can think of is Alice Madness Returns. If you move Alice forward and backward, there's no animation in between. Her head will just pop in and out of the screen.
My favorite Tomb Raider game! Think I finished it like 3 times back when it came out. Had no idea that it had DLCs, it's lame that they are xbox exclusive. Will you be reviewing Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light btw? I loved that one and it's very fun in co-op.
this game is much like aod but the sad thing is its finished and there is NO F REASON TO NOT LIKE IT but any way what happened is gone and everyone will regret ever hating this game bcoz it was so much like the classics 😭 thanks for giving it the love it needed and thanks for the video I laughed so hard💜😂
I remember playing this in 08 or 09 & coming from loving legend & anniversary i was left a little disappointed with underworld, it had great potential but some of the ideas around the level design kind of didn't work for me with the huge sprawling levels that was very different at the time for what we were used to. I guess my biggest criticism was the choppy frame rate & performance which broke the immersion for me, i guess because it was on PS2 it didn't play so well. I hope it gets a remaster to fix this
The problem of the ps2 version isn’t even the graphics, but the amount of content cut from the game! They made it VERY shorter than the original, which was already short lol But anyway, I really like underworld!
Underworld has the bones for an amazing game. Its really good, but really flawed in my opinion. That level in the jungle where you can hop on and off your motorcycle was awesome. It felt like a natural progression of gameplay. Like you where getting to play the cutscenes of the first game where she she'd ride in on her motorcycle. It was amazing. But like you said, the combat was way too easy. And the puzzles where really hit and miss for me. Hearing the level designer passed mid development makes it all make sense. What a damn shame. Really enjoyable game, but i wish it was just a bit more refined.
If you do get Underworld’s dlcs to work I 100% hope you save the playthru for UA-cam cuz it’ll be the last time you’ll play brand NEW (new to you) story basedTR content until TR12. And the dlc does provide some good closure.
Initially i was kinda disappointed with Underworld as a sequel to Legend, the story, the tone just didnt gel with what Legend established, and it also lacked features that were in Legend, like level replay, unlocking costumes, the treasures felt meaningless. But the core of the game was still really enjoyable. These days i'm no longer that harsh on it, since it was the last game where we saw Lara as she was more/less originally intended to be, what a Tomb Raider game was intended to be.
Love the music, environments(up until the last part), voice work is great, even the Launch Trailer was cool! but I hated the gun play, it was unpolished, even Legend and Anniversary in my opinion had better gun play.... even Uncharted 2 at the time, managed to out gun(lol) Lara.
I was a big fan of the first 2 games in the trilogy and was so excited to pick up this one back in 2008. Enjoyed it but felt underwhelmed. I have a few points to why. (just my personal opinion). Considering of the amount of pressure the developers had when pushing out almost 8 ports of this game at the time, and also the fact it's an entirely new engine, "miracle" sound about right. - The amount of bugs and glitches that's in the game can be frustrating. Even though Lara moves more realistically, it's not polished and she can also glitch out with her surroundings. - The levels can be so big and vast, finding treasures and relics can be quite a chore and overwhelming especially when its dark. I always dread starting a new game and realising I have to swim through this entire ocean just to find treasure. And some might say "gosh just leave it, you don't have to collect them". My ocd won't allow it haha. - Speaking of - First big level is underwater level. Not my favourite. - it makes sense that this game is alot darker hense the name. Though I feel like it can be dark a bit too often. The coastal Thailand level was a breath of fresh air. Though I get the theme and tone. - I loved the music of the first 2 games. But couldn't connect with the music in underworld. Great moments, and beautifully composed, just not for me. - The gun play and combat can be quite clunky and slow. The slomo headshot meter is not my favourite. - I was quite bummed to realise that the 2 DLCs Beneath the Ashes and Lara's Shadow are xbox exclusives. I only had an old pc at the time. Really wanted to play them. I think if the game had only been release for pc, Xbox and then later release for playstation 3, it would have worked out better. But now watched your video, does make me want to go back and play it again. 😂 Ps. The Thailand level is 🔥🔥
Thank you for this. Many valid points there :D I was playing the game from today's perspective so I cannot put myself into the shoes of someone who was playing the game when it was released. So Underworld, for me, seems to be like a breath of fresh air. Thailand (and Mexico) levels are lit. I love them. I can instantly see Coastal village / India levels in them :D I guess it's time for you to get one nostalgic playthrough, hehe
Thailand and Mexico are two of the best Tomb Raider levels ever. The major problem with the game however is that the rest of it is too short, too undercooked, and the story is bad.
If you ask me, I'd say this whole trilogy is not very talked about. Everyone knows about the classics and the new ones, but these ones not so much. I guess they were just unremarkable for their time. The 7th gen was just starting out and these games were still 6th gen in their design and gameplay. But that doesn't make them bad.
I liked it, completed it in 100% and to be honest never returned to it. I returned to Legend to see the reboot, replayed classics but I never feel to play underworld again. Its a good game, nice levels, didn't like the combat. Good conclusion of the story arc etc. Still to me it lacked certain charm and warm magic feel I have from TR3. The same feeling that remains imho in the newest reboots. I revisit and think about playing classics often but the last with crafting, progression, and weird level design are one-playthrough things.
I feel the same about classics. They are always worth revisiting in my book. There's something about them that sets them from Legend and subsequent releases
This is what happened: Legend and Anniversary came on the PS2. Underworld came at the beggining of the seventh gen and was a cross-gen title but the PS2 version ( the version most people played) was dogshit.
I've just seen the PS2 version through some videos and wow - it's so underwhelming. I understand some of the levels needed to be compromised, but the PS2 version is just awful. Too bad because next gen version is great
Mexico and especially Thailand are TOMB RAIDER PEAK. The rest of the game is not as good. I loved the environments and platforms but the game and Lara’s movement were a bit buggy. It seems unfinished in sections and they closed the trilogy strangely. I liked the game a lot even with its flaws.
I don't love this game. The gameplay felt worse than the previous games, and the story... bah. BUT I must admit it, the Thailand level (cliffs and Shiva temple) was great
Gosh, this game was one of the biggest disappointments of my gaming life!!! 🤣 Legend and Anniversary were... perfection. Or at least, very and polished and complete. Underworld, on the other hand, seemed rushed, cut, short and unfinished. No boss fights - really??? 😱 And I don't find the story very convincing, satisfying or engaging. Did they run out of time here? About the level design - the levels are ineed huge, but aren't designed cleverly. IMO CD didn't get this type of level design right until TR 2013. I liked the DLCs, though. Maybe that's because of my already lowered expectations, however they seem more polished and fun to play 😁
Why no love? You literally told all the negative things about the game in the video, that's why. I replayed it lately. and I absolutely love how lara looks, the voice acting, the graphics, the fantastic music. But the whole "boss" sequence is so tedious it ruined the whole game for me.

Underworld is my favourite Lara.

I really like angel of darkness and underworld. Apart from the obvious reason.
I really like the atmosphere if both games.
Same. Underworld Lara is great.
Mine too
She was hit in that skimpy bikini

Great video! I hope the algorithm starts favoring your other videos. I'd love to see some PS1 reviews!

Yeah, Crystal Dynamics were onto something here. Too bad we didn't get another sequel Underworld style. I'm sure it would be awesome
Fantastic review, I tend to agree with you I really enjoy this Back in the day, My issue with it was it was just too short
yeah.. 10 hours and it's done. Such a shame for enjoyable sequel like this one
I like it way better than anniversary.

That can be annoying, I agree. Sometimes I missed a platform or two, not because I miscalculated it, but because she would react the way I wanted.
