Eddie said something so profound that so many young musicians miss (I've done it too). Chord substitutions only work when you keep the melody in tact. KNOW THE MELODY!!!!

So I’m a musician at my church. We play more contemporary music and not so much gospel. But... I love gospel music and want so badly to learn that style. My grasp of theory is certainly less than the musicians on this video but I’m trying to hang. What would really help me is if when a guy like Eddy says know the melody inside out, that’s cool and makes perfect sense. But can he sing or play that very basic melody so we can hear where we’re coming from before we get to where we’re going to. In my church Bless the lord sounds quite different if I could hear that basic melody I think it would help me get there. BTW I love you guys and I will hang with you all until, by the grace of God, I get it. Thank you and much love to B’Dub I hang at the low end with you my brother
