This video is gold. I just blew up a tube while fitting conti 5000 on my wheel with standard tyre levers. i knew its not optimal but there was just no other way to get it done. I too run the Conti 5K TL on my 3 different sets of carbon wheels. I have 3 suggestions that might help you avoid using levers and damaging your carbon wheels: when putting on the final side of the tire, finish at the valve stem this way you can put more of the bead in the valley of the wheel channel. When you start at the valve stem, it will prevent the bead from going all the way into the valley and make it more difficult to finish putting on the last of bead. 2nd: try using using soapy water as a lubricant on the last bit of rim (opposite of the valve). It helps that new grippy rubber slide over the rim lip. 3rd: put on a pair of cycling gloves or work gloves to manually put on the last bit of bead. I place the wheel in my lap while sitting down, put the valve end of the wheel at my belly and the last bit of bead away from me and then using the bottom portion my palms I muscle that tire bead over the rim lip. If find the gloves or even a towel draped over the rubber gives me a better grip on the tire than just my bare hands. Been putting on tires this way when I used to run tubes because I never wanted to pinch the tube with my tire lever. Now I use the same method to avoid damaging expensive carbon rims.
I wish you would consider making a video too. This video was helpful but I can see where you tips may help as well I just cannot completely visualize your notes but then I was always a visual learner and not descriptive learner.

Wayne, I really enjoyed your video. I was a full time Police Bike mechanic for many years working primarily on Patrol Mountian Bikes and thought I knew a-lot of tricks for wrenching on bikes. I was so mad trying to mount the GP5000 on my rear wheel that I had to put it out in the shop and walk it off after pinching several tubes ( I should know better, but O' well!). Thanks for the tips on the install and the tire levers!

I always struggled very hard to mount the tires. By hand it was almost impossible. Thanks to your video I found out the way it's best done (for me). Since I couldn't find Continental levers at the shop where I ordered my tires, I opted for Schwalbe levers, since they're very slim too. Found out they're even better.
It's even a lot easier with the Schwalbe levers. You don't have to hold any lever or tire with you thumb. You can jam the tyre with 2 levers to the part where you can not longer push the bead on with your hands. That's where you put the 2 levers. There's a special clip on the levers to do so. Then, you use the third lever to help the bead over the rim. You can now slide the outside lever inwards, and so one. After 2 to 3 moves the tire is on since you can move almost 2 inches at a time (5 cm).

Think Continental is especially tight. I have been running tubeless on road since 2010 with Campa 2 way fit wheels and Hutchinson Fusion and never had a problem getting them on. Have also been running ZIPP NSW with Vittoria Corsa G2 and they fit so loose that I struggle to get them to seal. Has to poor in the sealant before seating them.
Now, the GP5000TL on Vision and Zipp rims, that is actually the first time I gave up.
So, thanks, your trick, patience, working half an inch at a time worked a treat!!!

Great review. Good guy. I decided to go with the 5000 Clincher. Tubeless is a mess. Not saying it’s not a better ride but I have never got a flat since 2006! Keep riding. Just rode the Seagull Century in Maryland on Vittorio Corso Clinchers. It’s reliable but changing now to the 5000.

Thank you for this video. I struggled for about two hours to get my tire on the the rim, but after seeking advice online and watching your video, it only took me another 15 minutes of spewing the F word.
I have since learned that the issue isn't the tire, it's tubeless-ready rims. I tried multiple tires on the rim I was having trouble with, and every tire was almost impossible to mount. I switched to a regular clincher, non-tubeless rim, and I could mount two GP 5000's in about 5 minutes using only my fingers and a single tire lever.
This tire-mounting difficulty is a big concern for me. If you're a dedicated roadie and you're running tubeless, you probably don't need to worry too much about tire mounting disasters on the side of the road, since a flat isn't likely to happen anyway. However, if like me you also like doing multi-day tours in varied terrain, being able to fix things anywhere easily is kind of non-negotiable. I've decided to go back to clincher tires and rims; I'd rather get three flats I can deal with than one flat that leaves me stranded.
For an easy way to remember the direction on Conti's. , point the narrow end of the graphic on tire towards the front of the bike. They look like arrows to me so I view the narrow end of the graphic as the tip of an arrow pointing towards the front of the bike. Hope that helps someone.

I had a hellofa time putting my GP5000TL tires on my Reynolds AR58 wheels. I love Continental tires but I have found that they are a royal pain in the ass to mount...more so than any other tire I have used.
mavic, years ago, had levers they gave with their Kysrium wheels. i have a few, theya re just like those yellows even thinner. ask your shop for them or look on ebay. super cheap probably but perfect for tight tires. koolstop has a tire wrench, $15 bucks amazon or shop, its incredible for these situations and dont lever off the carbon sidewall.

I used an adjustable wrench as a third hand to pinch the tyre, and two non sharp relatively hard, thin, dining fork holding ends to walk the bead on from the other side. Dream.
I thought maxxis tyres were the hardest thing to get on, but GP 5000 's are something else...
Loosen the valve, fit the valve part of the tyre last & you don't need levers. By fitting at the valve 1st your working the tyre out of the tolerances it was made to work within. If you do it last you can push the full bead into the centre of the wheel. Once the tyre is on push the valve back in using the tyre, job done easy.
Still no way your getting that on without leavers.
As mentioned, don't start at the valve, finish at the valve. It get's more tire into the center channel which is the key to getting tires on. Also look into the Kool Stop Tire Bead Jack. Best $15 you'll ever spend. Get's even the most stubborn tires on and wont damage your rims like a lever will.

I struggled to get these on my winspace hyper wheels, what I would like to know is if it's any easier remounting them if you get a puncture and you need to install an inner tube out on the road
Hey Roland, no it does Not get any easier.. But I'd say its still worth it.. the odds of a puncture are very low.. I've put over 15 thousand miles and only flatted 2x... just keep the thin tire leavers in your saddle bag and you should be good..
I agree that in general you won't get a flat which is so flat you won't get home. Just don't stop unless you are really flat. The other option is to carry a dynaplug (Stan's darts really don't work for me on road) and a co2 canister. Ride until its dangerously low as most will self seal as the pressure drops, then finally give up around 20psi, stick your finger over the hole until you get the plug ready and depending how much pressure is left you are often on your way.
I also use muc off sealant which seems to deal with road pressures better and is tolerant to CO2 (I'd still flatten the tire, Top up the sealant you lost and reinflate once home).
How about rubbing a bit of silicon on the wheels at the last section you use the tire levers on.
Looks easy… I found your video after having a terrible time trying to mount a Scwhabe Durano on my Boyd Podiums (with inner tube) after a flat. I gave up and decided to call a friend to bring me home. Terrible experience
Schwalbe tire levers have a little clip on them so they clip onto the rim bead during install , so you don't have to hold it with you elbow. LOL

What is the air compressor you use?
Not sure off the top of me head, rigid or Hitachi, basic 150 psi pancake.
Just drop Continental tires altogether and replace them with Pirelli og Hutchinson. So much easier to put on and pull off, and the tires are at least just as good.
Do you have difficulty removing the tyres?
No getting them off is pretty easy.
I don't know why they have to make the tyres so tight.
I've got those same DT swiss wheels. Tried mounting 30mm tyres and they don't work cos the internal is too narrow.

Mounted these yesterday on my Yoeleo carbon Disc 60's. It was a living hell to get them mounted!! I have SAT rims, so there is no rim tape required. One wheel took over an hour to finally get the bead over the rim, luckily it seated on the first inflation blast from my AIRSHOT (+ 30ML sealant). I used no mounting tools - just got them over the rim with my thumbs - but ended up with massive blisters as a consequence. Tire two was about the same insane mounting process. That 5000 TL bead is crazy chunky, there is no way it's coming off the rim after inflation. Make sure that your rim is absolutely clean (pristine) before mounting - you don't want to re-live mounting misery if you have a bead leak from residual hardened sealant.

I've been wrestling with the new Prime Primavera 28 Carbon Wheels and any tyre I try will not go on. All 700 x 28; Conti 5000 (NOPE), Michelin Pro 4 (NOPE), Maxxis High Road (pre stretched off old rims). These Primaveras have 20.3mm Internal, 27.5mm External and 28mm depth and are rim brake carbon wheels.
It's hard to find the arrow sometimes, so I just look at the tread pattern as a sharks fin, and remember that the sharks fin swims in a certain direction.. Much faster to see and get that than finding the arrow.

No problem, don’t think you need a chair to do it.
Of course you can put them on by hand. You just need the correct technique. you need to push the tyre to the base of the rim, this way it gives slack. Think aobut it, the inner side of the rim has a shortus radius than where it is installed in the end. This is how pros do it. In France "type levers" are called "unmounting tyre levers". A pro mechanic laughed at me years ago when I asked him if he was using unmounting tool to mount a tyre. Now I can brag about it as well lol.

Just buy a Kool Stop Tire Boot ort the EZ Clincher tool. you won't have to work like an epileptic ape trying to use those little levers. Trust me, it works far faster, safer and is good on clinchers in particular, completely avoiding pinch flats on installs. These levers look like a pain in the ass.
I wouldn't call it a pain in the ass was quite easy actually.. So do you take that tool with you on every ride? These tire leavers fit in a small saddle bag!!!!
These tyres are the worst to fit to any bike wheel. I ended up using lots of bad words!!!!😀

As of now v1 needs a slight modification to work with slightly thicker carbon rims. V2 is on the way this year. I modified mine and it worked fine on 28mm tl tyres on 50 mm deep wheels. Super easy.
