- U.S. Marine Corps recruits mark range targets during pre-qualification firing at Chosin Range, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. The recruits used shot spotting discs and scoring discs to let shooters know where rounds were landing. The recruits are with November Company, Fourth Recruit Training Battalion, Recruit Training Regiment.

Little unknown fact about pulling butts if they still call it that, The paper cloth when the bullet strikes it is to simulate the sound the round makes when it hits flesh. The reason they are in the pits is so that you will get use to hearing fire go by you or over your head and no it will never be automated because the Pitt's is the first psychological combat tool used. That why you don't go to field training till after you have gone to the range. I'm sure every Marine can remember pulling targets, you were being psychologically trained and did not know.
Does not look like a thing has changed in the "Pitts" since 1973 to 1977. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sgt.
Ive heard... working the butts and working the pitts. I was in the Corps 73-77, I think we called it the butts maybe the pitts. At 64 yrs old can't remember. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sgt.
The sound you hear in the pits is from the supersonic "crack" as the rounds pass overhead. You would hear the same thing if there were no targets present.
@@BK-ju6rb I totally agree but hitting the cloth makes a difference. Trust me when I tell you it a unique sound when a round hits flesh.
@GunBunny look, hes gonna say he qualed with iron sights too
Being on the rifle range was the best part of boot camp back in 1976. Looks like things have not changed. Working the pits was part of the job. We had to hold a stick up with a red disk and wave it left to right across the target when a request was called to check the target for a hit. Waving a red disk meant the shooter missed the target entirely. The shooter better start focusing on what their range trainer had instructed them to do if they plan to graduate. We briefly held up a stick with a white disk over the hole where the last shot was scored. We had no optics on our M16A. All iron sites. The rear site was flipped for targets over 250 meters. It's all easy if you listen and do as the Marine shooting instructors teach you.
I agree with you. I went boot camp at Parris Island back in 1973. I'd forgot about flipping the"Long Range Sites" Semper Fi from an old Marine Sgt.
Wasn't the red disk going back and forth called "Maggie's drawers" ? I went through San Diego back in 1994 :)
@@tbob8212 yeah for a miss it came across the pa "no impact, no idea" for when it most likely went high. or you were "diggin up worms" if the boys in the pitts were gettin covered in grass and dirt. haha. for all those big city boys that went there and were shootin with their eyes closed.
we still used the red disk on a stick for missed shots when I did range in boot back in 2012 on Camp Pendleton.
Hated doing this shit. Especially when you had people unq and had to go back and pull pits for them
😂😂
Damn blue falcon over here
#2 pencil works
Gives me joy that there are kids that still decide to join the Marines out of all the branches in a time of war, giving up their youth and comfortable lives back home to serve. Now that I'm older I'm just in awe of these kids.
Brian Jin its peacetime, and the majority of the Marine Corps is just police calling Battalion HQ, painting rocks, and working countless hours of weapon maintenance. Lol Semper Fi
@@tlsrob6772
Yup... Sadly yes... :(
@@tlsrob6772 I was mid 1990s peacetime USMC. It's still cool that young kids still choose to enlist in the USMC or any branch for that matter. Semper Fi

Boot
@@savage5677 when am I not considered a boot?
@@neon7163 when you have time in grade and stop quoting boot camp cause in the fleet no one gives a shit
CEEEEASE FIRE CEASE FIRE, unload.
@@savage5677 I missed that last comment comment to Neon. Announcers talked the same way in the fleet! So why the phuck are you saying Neon is quoting stuff from boot camp? Last I checked we qualed once a year every year.
Since you incorrectly called Neon a boot even though he quoted something from the fleet, it's my turn now...
Btw, fyi I didn't follow my last comment with the phrase "Show clear" so you KNOW that's from the fleet dickhead.
The general procedure for marking hits hasn't changed in over 50 years, but you don't hear "lap 'em and strap 'em," "taste 'em and paste 'em," "lick 'em and stick 'em" any more with those self-adhesive patches.
They dressed this up and made it look pretty. This is not what it was like at Pendleton in '96.
Lol boot camp pits. Fleet pits were fun! The smoking and joking while getting the job done. Giving pit love when needed 🤣
Hell yeah they were. Don't forget the snacks!
I remember this one particularly cold ass morning I was working the pits at Edson Range and while I was marking my target, this female DI spawned out of nowhere and straight up stole my canteens that I had sitting on the bench behind me 💀
Even pulled targets after I left the Marine Corps!
Extra tall soldiers need not apply
United States Marines, Soldiers are in the United States Army. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sergeant.
@@usmc-veteran73-77 I hear this phrase ALL the time. We used to say "Servicemembers" but I guess that's a mouthfull, and the press just uses "Soldiers" for all. I get tired of that. Semper Fi, Marine! Oooh Rah!
Im working on the new #1 pit its cool,i think you'll like it
I wish they made civilian ranges like this!
I hated working in those Pits
It was outta the sun tho
@@guts_4534 yes it was definitely a lot cooler in the pitts at Parris Island, Camp Hansen & Camp LeJeune. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sgt.
Pitts was good duty
Looks fun
I fucking hate bad butt markers sometimes the idiots pull it down before I've even taken a shot making me almost miss XD
TheArmoredHippo ha
sometimes that happens because the doofus next to you on the line shot your target and not theirs
@@Spikeelsucko EXACTLY!! My dumbass was guilty of that, DOOFUS me. Or you're in the butts or pits and a shot goes through the target you're pulling. Well you pull it down to mark it. Then you hear "Target 17! Target 17! Your shooter did not shoot!!
Very cool!
At 1:16 it appears the rounds keyholed the target. Way too large for a 5.56 or even a 9mm
that usually happens if someone skips a round off the berm, but keyholed shots do happen sometimes.
Sometimes they wobble in flight leaving a larger hole.
IMPOSSIBLE it was during slow fire. The old hole would've been taped up.
@@Stacy_Smith that’s called keyholing where the bore is so gone it can’t stabilize

Target 7 No impact, No Idea
Ahh the memories of working the buts who put there dog tags on the target eh eh. 3rd Batt 3rd Mar. Yat-YaS! 1995-1999
Finally... something they can do without crashing or breaking it.
Whats that supposed to mean. They arent pulling pits for males while they shoot if thats what you’re insinuating.
I think the joke is that Marines break any and everything
What orange, whtite and black circles are for?
mucbko the black goes on the white background and the white goes on the inside black person shape or target and the orange will go on the corners of the whole target, which corner it goes on depends on the value of the shot.
The orange one is used to indicate a couple things, one is to indicate no hits are found (if I remember right) but is also used for 'rapid fire' sections of shooting where multiple shots are taken before being marked- if you have an orange marker on top (above) of the target it indicates that all shots his the scored area. In other words a fast indication of 10/10 hits. You want to see that orange marker come up for the rapid fires.
They orange circles are used to show the shooter if he hit a 5, 4, 3, or a 2 depending on what corner of the target they put it on. The white and black circles are used to show where his shots hit. If they're shots are in the black you use the white circles and if they're shots are in the white you use the black ones.
so inaccurate. where are the kids duck walking with water jugs while being counted down?
The funny part I was one of those kids. Not to long ago and the pits was not this calm we was still getting our ass chewed out and I only had 10 seconds to mark the targets or less. “STAND BY GRAB HOLD…. TARGETS …. GET THEM THE FUCK UP YOU DONE.”
We had some guys that shot the wrong target ! lol
I shot the wrong target on occasion :) also when you're in the butts/pits and a round strikes your target, well you pull it down
and mark the shot. Then you hear your target number called "Target 34! Target 34! Your shooter did not shoot!!". Also when someone else shoots your target and you're ready to fire then your target goes down. You raise your hand on the firing line to get the attention of the range staff :)
Right! I had expert 3 years in a row until some jackass decided to use my target more than his. I'd be ready to shoot and they would drop the target and score me a miss. Wtf. Wouldn't be so bad on snap in but the day of qualification sucked.
Where the F are the scoring paddles and WTF is up with the HUGE scoring markers ? Has the Corps gone blind ?
JD97711 Paddles are only for rapid fire.
500 yard line.
@Debby Downer Sight picture, sight alignment. I did it repeatedly in the Corps for years. What branch are you in?
Son, what do you do in the military? Are you in a tank? Infantry?
Uh.. im a target boy.

I am a student at the John F. Kennedy High School. We are currently filming a Public Service Announcement for our island regarding a firing range being built in Ritidian, a wildlife refuge here in Guam. My group and I used some of your video footage for our PSA. We were wondering if we could ask your permission to use these footages by you to enhance our project’s meaning and to inform the island of Guam about this topic.

Georgette Mateo when i was in guam we shot at a range but have no idea where it was. A bad day at the range beats a good day anywhere else
At what range are these people shooting at the target, if its less than 400 yards they really need to train a lot more, most marine corps rifles are really good at even 1,000 yards as long as you have the rifle matched at 100 yards and then take into account the wind and distance and weather conditions, you should be able t hit the bulls eye all the time ? My God i got 9 out of ten shots at 400 yards hit the bulls eye when i was in the cadets for gods sake and that was with SLR weapon or L1A1 Rifle ?
7071t6 The furthest is 500 yards.
Good luck hitting anything with an standard issue M4 past 600 meters without a bipod and match ammo.
No.
