Their comparison of the Mercury Monterey was to the Buick Special and Oldsmobile 88 - both of which had the split rear windows for only that one year.

The irreverent comment about the GM rear window around Chrysler--who had raised the styling bar with its 1957 "Forward Look" designs--played off the advertising slogan for the Plymouth..."Suddenly It's 1960"
At General Motors, ",Suddenly it's 1949"

My first car was a 1957 Mercury Montclair sedan I bought for $80.00 when I was barely 15. It was a nicer world back then when you were unafraid to go outside, get high on whatever and enjoy your life. You could have sex with someone without having to run a background check on them first or ask to see their vaccination card. And the most fun of all was owning your own car and the independence it allowed you. That old Merc was mine and I didn't give a damn if the paint had faded to sickly shade of pink. It gave me my freedom

I will never ever say any 1950s car was ugly but my goodness that 57 turnpike cruiser was......wild?

Yep, 57 Turnpike Cruiser was ugly. Especially those giant turn signals above the headlights. The dealer installed Bumper Bench Seat/Continental kit made the car uglier yet as well as making trunk and gas filler access needlessly difficult. Ford wanted everyone to forget how ugly the 57 TPC was, so, for 58, they released the Slant Eyed Continental and the Edsel.
