The more you have the more you need to work and earn money to keep it. It is better to live small and enjoy your little pleasures. Simple good food, safe home, clean bed, fresh air and exercise. Don't forget the library, good place to walk to , read paper, magazines, computer, talk with some folks and bring home a few good book. I do this weekly.
I and my wife started out homeless , I worked and got a 15 foot RV trailer , We fixed it up and went from there ! I now live in a small place , But we are HAPPY ! thumbs up Malc ..
Well well Shawn - you have to have been there to know what it's like.....thumbs up mate. End of the day, despite adversity we've made it eh! Must admit I'm shocked...but at least you've family. Being happy with what you've got is much much better than unhappy with what you don't have......sure you know what I mean :D
What a lovely man. I live beneath my means as much as I can. It's ingrained in me now to save as much as possible. I buy very very basic groceries and make batches of food which I can freeze. Healthy stuff too, not processed crap. My friends think I'm mad and should treat myself but if I ever land in a real financial fix I don't have anyone to bail me out. I take responsibility for my money. I live very very basically but I have no debt. I hope I am able to continue this way. Your video is proof that it can be done long term, and you still seem like a happy man. Well done.
Thank you. Yes it can be done long term, but mine was forced on me. However when I have had enough, I have spent some, hopefully wisely to do things. For instance a small windfall I used for boating, which I managed to do for 10 years, and I used my small boats. It's all relative really isn't it. I've a few friends who have always saved, one in particular who is now a rich man, but lives a very poor lifestyle. In fact it seems to worry him if he has to spend any.
I'm 27 and it's amazing what people get rid of and spend money on, i try to live very simply because I realised pretty young that getting stuff doesn't bring any lasting gratification, I like upcycling and making use of what people don't want, income is probs less than 240 a month bills included, great outlook on life really enjoyed the video
You know Malcom, if more people had this kind of outlook, the world might just be a better place. You don't need a high income or a fat wallet, nor even a palace or mansion, to be comfortable in life... simply, you need to be happy with what you have and make the best of it. In the end, it's not what you have or how much money you have.. it's in how happy and content that you're with what you have.. if you're happy, you have the world! Take care mate!
I entirely agree Brett. I was always 'different' told to change by everyone, but I've learned to be me, if you see what I mean. I suppose part of it is the fact mankind has destroyed our planet because materialism ..... more in the last 200 years than the millions before. I've never liked destruction, which is course is very ironic, as my hobby is banger racing....well before I got the Nuffield. Thanks again.
I have lived beneath my means a long time now. I've been in the army 12 years. I've only one. Stripe. Blokes three stripes higher than me with not a penny in the bank, splashing it on the latest stuff. I got all I need and a good life, roof over my head. Your living the way to do it malc keep doing what you're doing.
I cannot agree more. I think the ability to measure something and plan and act accordingly is an extremely powerful tool that must never be underestimated. I remember reading a very interesting paper which investigated into what caused people to succeed or fail when it came to losing weight. The most determining factor in one's success was whether they were counting their calories or not. Those that did not count their calories failed and those which counted their calories and recorded them succeeded. If you have any kind of problem, then finding a way to measure and keep track of it is always the most important step to solving the problem. Whether that is spending too much money, eating too much, finding yourself with not enough time to do the things you want to do. Measuring and keeping track of what you're doing with your money or your food or your time is the most effective way to empower yourself.
Thanks for sharing. Society and advertising tell us that we need far more than we actually do. Going for a walk in nature, enjoying the simple peace of life, cooking your own food, focusing on your experiences not your possessions. Life doesn't need to be big and expensive it can be small and comfortable too.
A fool needs countless things yet makes good use of nun of them. A wise man needs little and can make good use of anything. Gratitude is a wonderful gift. I'm glad you have it.
Thanks mate - Exactly right. Fate has always decided my hand, despite some telling me you can make your own. I mean, take the Clio for instance. Asked the Salesman for something that would last me. First time I'd spent any real money on a car. And it came up the next week. Like new, 30,000 miles and one of the last to be made with no electronics.
You're welcome. Funnily enough I read something similar only a few days ago. It really does work, as you can see what you are spending, rather than just memorising it.
good video my friend i have the same settee and i also buy ex-office computers off e bay/ the dell 780 i bought 8 years ago is still going strong I watch youtube i player and all the tv. you don't have to spend a lot take care Tony Leics UK
Thank you John, that's spot on. Nowadays most people seem to think they should have everything immediately. But as you've seen, friends and neighbours have been good to me, so I want for nothing. Well very little :)
I was forced into it Lloyd, but it saved the day so to speak. Only thing is about 9 years ago I did have a small break. Relaxed a bit so waste a bit again now. However when I got back I realized I was getting a tad obsessive about not spending. It was starting to make me ill. So many people I know are obsessed with money....some make life hard, despite having, possibly millions in the bank.
One of your not so recent videos that I've been meaning to watch for some time, Malc. Yes, the message is clear, we can all economise effectively if we put a bit of logic into it. I haven't seen you on YT lately, I do hope all is well. Best wishes, Colin.
Malc, thanks for this - I've just spent my evening assembling a spread sheet like yours, brilliant idea and I should have done it long ago. Thanks again, Phill.
Cheers Phil - this really HAS made it worth it....ok I did it years ago, but wish I'd done it much sooner. When you actually see it written down you think 'why on earth did I spend that'. My 'problem' now, if you can call it is that because I had to stop so early, I've sort of lost £200,000 in income.....so before I can save a penny, I've got to save that....sure you get what I mean....basically it's needs must isn't it.
It's so easy looking back isn't it! I count myself lucky to be in a good situation now, but I know how easily it can all change. If I'm keeping proper tabs on what I spend, saving is easier and in that way your idea will make all the difference.
Great information Malc, learned a lot from you. We have downsized to living in a truck and are really enjoying the freedom of not owning lots of stuff. Enjoyed your handiwork - very clever. It is neat the way you have mastered your circumstances and they haven't mastered you.
Many thanks for that Bryan - I've just had a quick look at your 'operation', Best of luck in the future. Look forward to hearing of your adventures. Must remember not to leave my lunch box unattended lol. People might say you've 'jumped off the treadmill'. Well I don't think I ever got on it (grin). Hope you like what you see, and just occasionally I can be helpful.
Hey Malc...I love my old VADO. Easier and better than my son's go pro. Your videos are great! Keep them coming!... Your outlook on life is so right on spot! Susan
Thanks Susan. I still use the Vado, but have recently bought a good Sony. Last generation are now inexpensive. I do a lot that requires close ups, plus it's a much steadier picture. I try to come across as positive, and making videos is my main, and most enjoyable hobby. Has led to so many opportunities, plus of course some great online friends around the world :)
Great advice malc i buy most of my electrical items secondhand i even picked up 3 dumped tvs, 2 sony trintron crt,s 21 inch, i have old computers zx spectrums and bbc micros that are better on an old crt with 4:3 aspect ratio the 3rd tv is a japanese made sharp lcd 32 inch works perfect but need to make a stand .i am trying to save as much money as possible as have spent moneyto get my old vauxhall carlton diplomat through another mot ,i bought the parts needed but missed the time to get the free retest put it in again another £40 and it failed again because a rear shock was leaking now waiting fo a new one to come from germany suposed to be here friday last day for the retest is next wednesday .I will be spending just enough to get survive to pay day and selling some stuff to make my money up again once the car is done i will be able to save more money , i want to build a new pc but will build it over many months as i can afford .I never buy news papers and do not have a tv licence i buy cheap dvd,s sometimes from the pound shop or charity shops and have many vhs films to watch .
Thanks Paul. Yes you don't need a lot of money to live well. Most people waste most of theirs. I do now waste some of mine, but didn't for 17 years so.....Apart from internet payment, all of my 'entertainment' is free. UA-cam, despite it's current problems is a great resource. If you want to find out something, search it. If you want entertainment, it's there. I've not had a tv for years. Occasional hour of catchup on 3/4/5 but EVERYTHING you want is on here. For instance, came across an American 50s B film. Ok the acting etc was naff, but worth it for the cars alone. Age has really caught up this year, had to pay my mate to weld the Clio up, but it got it done. A few new bits, but had it 18 years now, so doesn't owe me anything. If you look through my latest videos, you see I entertain myself for almost nothing, making things from what I have.
Top tips Malc! I'm probably wasting a lot, especially on computer equipment :( I remember as a child my mother accidentally locked herself out, so she got the local burglar to break in to our house for us. He took about 2 minutes, that's when I realised I wasn't well off :D
Thanks - I waste a lot now, and have in the past. Spent over half the money I earned on petrol for instance....BUT hang on a minute....that's not really wasting it is it....wasting it is buying lottery tickets for instance....giving your money to millionaires for nothing. If you really want to save money....stop breathing lol. Won't cost you anything then.
Cheers Paul. Never spent a lot on food. In fact recently someone asked me what I was having for dinner. I replied food lol. Lamps and clocks are still for sale.....got a Nuffield to support (grin).
I've always done this mentally I suppose, put some out of my wages to pay bills. As with the Stock Car in '78 I kept note of what it cost, and what I spent. In the end, after selling it didn't cost me anything, and went a long way to the small deposit I needed to buy this house.
Make do and mend is a good way to live in the throw away society we live in. If you have shelter, food, and clothes on your back then you are doing okay. This was my Nan's way of thinking. It worked during ww2 when there was rationing. There is so much we can learn from history and from older generations but sadly a lot of youngsters don't listen and then complain when they have no money or because they don't have the latest phone or other technology. They don't seem to realise that it's not always an income problem it's what they spend their money on every day. Cooking at home, making packed lunches and taking your own coffee to work can save a lot of money over time. The trouble is a lot of people don't think and want things straight away so they will buy sandwiches and coffee on the way to work which can add up to spending £5 or more every day. Eating out instead of cooking at home can cost a fortune as well.
hi, wise words/I walked past my chip shop last night . fish and chips £ 8.50 and i live in a little village. I wonder what they charge in London. I remember fish and chips as a cheap meal not anymore. I can make 3 dinners for that. Take care all. Tony Leics uk
We should call you "the Master of Making Ends Meet". Seriously Malc you have a great outlook. Happy New Year to you. Hope you have a bit of fun in 2017. Clive
Thanks Clive - never been one to blow money, but this was forced on me. Luckily I've enough of a brain to cope. Well we have a choice in life, don't we. Either be happy and grateful for what you have, can do, or miserable about what you don't or can't. If you'd have told me what I was to do, racing, boating and the tractor I just wouldn't have believed you...in fact told you so in very strong words lol. Happy New Year mate....looking forward to spring, warmer weather and out n about on the Nuffield. Meanwhile, this passes the time.
Very good advice. I even add a "cushion" to compensate for the gas price and to get bulk stuff or on sale items I need. I will never get a credit card, I don't get why I would get anything on credit and then have to pay for the privilege for my business. Doesn't make sense and once you start paying to buy on credit with the tax in Canada at 15% plus the credit card monthly fee and then if you carry a balance, it becomes a mobster rate of like 22% plus.
As I said in my Mini video, I learned early on that borrowing money for bikes, cars is not the way. Was still paying for both after I'd 'wrecked' them...driven to destruction lol. I did borrow for a tv once, instead of renting.....saved me about 2/3s, and my house of course, but they've given me back the full cost, plus extra. That's what has kept me alive these last 25odd years, and made the boating etc possible.
You seem to live a very simple life but seem very happy, most of our stuff is good secondhand stuff as are most of my work tools, whatever I buy In my mind it has to be a bargain. When at the shops I very rarely buy stuff that hasn't got some sort of offer. I have family that everything has to be modern and new, they earn good money but never have money. You have to be careful it's a sight easier to spend than earn. Good vid and have a good new year.
Thanks - not a case of being happy really, rather not discontented with what you don't have. I think we all learned this lesson when we first started work. First paypacket and you were rich. Then you found out you had to support yourself, and suddenly you were poorer than when you got a few pence pocket money. You take care.
Great advice Malc ,,,, most people get sucked it to the materialistic world ,,,, and crave the best "Things" want the most expensive "Things" covert the best "Things" little do they realize ,,,,,,,,,, "The best "Things" in the world,,, are not "THINGS"
Cheers Alan - hope you've had a decent time. The best things are what we make eh! I mean, how did we become friends...by being clever and making stuff. Wonder how it is the 'brainwashing' of tv didn't work on us....
I live in abandoned trailer in back of 3 Acres; I now have my own electrical drop ( energy feed ) We have a refrigerator which I run off of my power Anybody here study world heath Org minimal diet??
Good video, and how very true what you say. I am in the middle of writing to you in email (oh no! not another Malc cries!) and will attempt to keep it concise - but don't hold your breath :))
People are sick to the teeth of the likes of Windows who want to upgrade operating systems with increasing regularity. I agree with you mate. Buy cheap S/H kit and just throw it out when it packs up. You can furnish a small home or flat from charity shops for very little. If you are handy, you can make lots of good things from Pallets and as for this new kitchen Con!! what a joke that is! Buy a BICYCLE and do your shopping and short journeys on that. Even a small motorbike is worthwhile. Something like a Honda 50. Why pay BBC their £140 odd a year? Just get an HDMI cable and watch You Tube or catch up. Forget the pub! Why pay £4.00 plus for a pint of 99%water? Have your mates around and play Scrabble. Your best advice is writing down all your spend. I have done this for at least eight years and I know how to budget.
You've sussed it. There was no internet when I first started to do this. I had no transport, so bought an old 100cc Kwak which I mended. Needed the forks straightening and a coil. This was in 1993. I also bought a 125 MZ that cost me £100 on the road. The next year I did inherit my fathers car, but used the bikes because they were cheaper. The next year I sold it, getting an old van, however I now had enough to run it so sold the Kwak. Taking all costs it only cost me £5 for 3 years. Then, 6 years later I got the Clio, which I've had for 18 years. The first vehicle I've paid 'proper' money for. With something now reliable I sold the MZ, which again covered all cost for the time I had it. 7 or 8 years ago I binned the tv when digital came out, and as you say I now have my own 'tv' channel. A great and very rewarding hobby making my 'programs'. Friends all around the world, have had the opportunity to do many things. If fact I had another gift only a couple of days ago. See my latest video.
Great advice.

@@tonyn9858 In Central London it's roughly between £11 to £15 for fish and chips.
Amazing
I use an old Microsoft money from 1999 to track my income and spending.
I live in abandoned trailer in back of 3 Acres;
I now have my own electrical drop ( energy feed )
We have a refrigerator which I run off of my power
Anybody here study world heath Org minimal diet??
I have this same couch. Got it free
Nice Way of Living :)
Thanks.
like an old man's front room in 1955.
Good video, and how very true what you say. I am in the middle of writing to you in email (oh no! not another Malc cries!) and will attempt to keep it concise - but don't hold your breath :))
Email as much as you like Mike. Just walked down to the shop and it's horrible out. Damp cold and foggy so need something to do in here.
Top tip top man
Cheers. Good job I use my brain occasionally, otherwise I wouldn't have survived.....
I would of watched this except I couldn't understand him
Very interesting video, but I do wish you would stop looking to your right, it's really annoying !!
