    I like how Fate handles it. You get Stress that replenishes fully every scene, and if you run out, you get consequences. The damage system is about how you absorb the damage and how you can use stress and consequences to deal with it. A consequence becomes an aspect with a free invoque for the damage dealer, signaling he's likely to attack where it hurts. It should be noted that you get consequences of 3 different grades, but each bigger grade absorbs more damage.

      Thanks for your commen. I agree, Fate is a fantastic system! We played it with Secrets of Cats and had a great time. I like that they have both physical and mental stress tracks. Those consequences are very neat. I kinda wish they would offer more examples or a random chart, just because they can be hard to come up with on the fly sometimes. But improv is a big piece of Fate.

    My home brewed ruleset uses wound thresholds. When the severity of the wound is determined you roll on a separate chart specific to the hit location and severity level. Most of the disadvantages for a serious wound to the arm will yield the same in game penalties but the flavor will vary.

      That sounds really cool! Do you use that homebrew ruleset with 5e? That sounds similar to what Greg was thinking about trying. How many levels of severity do you have?

      @cabbitcrossing I play 5e with a group but he's a RAW DM. For my own game, it's whole cloth. I use 5 levels of wounds though only 3 are really impactful as Minor is more of a "you got hit but it's not serious" layer. Too many and it ramps up to Moderate which has penalties, so you can chip away. And on the far end is Mortal, where death is imminent.
