I was just given a contract where I needed to write chiptunes and this video helped tremendously. Thank you kindly for taking the time to create this, and the generosity to post it.
Great Infrotainment vid! :D I Love using reason to make my chip'esq'tunes it means I can put a few effects on it the smooth out the stereo sound and actually master it before the final mixdown. Also this Thor patch is great I will be using this, Thanks!
For scream, same deal. Loaded it up with default settings, flipped the distortion type to "digital" and then played with the rate and resolution knobs till I got a sound I was happy with.
Hey, that was made in Reason as well, using the vocoder. More than I can fit in 500 characters, but look up Reason Vocoder Tutorial and you're bound to find some info on how it's done. Basically just run a carrier (gritty synthesizer) and a modulator (spoken words - I just use redrum and load the vocal sample in, it's quick and easy) into the vocoder and then adjust the pitch using plotted notes in the sequencer.
I have a midi controller keyboard that I use - but no actual hardware. I once had a Trtion, JP-8000, Microwave XT - but I got rid of it all when I started working in software. Everything you see in the demo is stuff that can be done in Reason right out of the box without additional purchases.
@InstantMix Haha - perhaps you're right. I already had this discussion once in the comments. In my defense, it's a reference to The Shining - and he says "Red-rum". But "Ree-drum" does fall more in line with ReBirth and Reason.
Thanks. I tried a whole bunch of different samples and got some neat sounds from them. I just wanted to know which you used 'cause I liked some of them.
Some kind of midi controller is useful. If you have a midi interface for your computer, any keyboard with a midi out should work. You can get a cheap M-Audio midi controller on the fly, though. You don't technically need a keyboard at all, but it's helpful.
Never mind. I figured out how to add notes. XD This program is awesome thanks for showing me this! Can you upload some tutorials showing how to really use this program.
nice! very talented! do you use a keyboard, or just the software? and all of those things you use like redrum and stuff, do those come with the software? or do yuo have to buy them seperately? cheers.
That's called a Midines - it's available from WayFar Industries. I was trying to post a link in this comment, but I don't think it will let me so just do a search for it and you should be able to find the site no problem.
Dude, I have to send massive good vibes your way, because you really saved my butt on a deadline I had to make. If you check out my website, the tune I wrote using everything you talked is on the right, if you'd like to here it. Thanks a million!
thanks for the great vid cicadacom! very informative series... do you know if its possible to send midi out of reason to a Gameboy DMG or any of the other devices you listed? (so you can sequence midi on the computer but use the GB sounds?) i would assume that you can do it with a midines, but it would be great with a GB. cheers
THANK YOU! It sounded like "Pelipity" or "Pelifity" when I heard it and the video definition was too low for me to read it. I have an IRL synth and have used polyphony in factory-made instruments, but I wanted to know the word for future reference/usage!
All the subtractor and maelstrom patches are the default patch that you get when you load the synth into the rack. Hopefully you should be able to follow what changes I'm making in the tutorial.
Let's see... BDCut_Codes, SDCut_Codes, Hh_Jeepkeys, Hh_Congas, Bd_Heimat, Clp_Monk. They're all in the "Xclusive drums sorted" folder in the Redrum drums folder. I would explore using different ones, though. You can get some interesting sounds if you play around a bit.

Yes, test6 is correct, don't think you need a Mac to make good music. Reason is cross platform as are applications like Live, ProTools, Milkytracker, etc. The PC also has some exclusives like Acid and Fruity Loops while the Mac gets Logic Studio and the simple (but not to be ignored) Garageband. All are great options, work wherever it makes the most sense for you. So long as you're having fun, that's all that really counts.
No, that's a perfectly good question. I said I have the polyphony turned down to one. The polyphony is the number of different notes that are allowed to trigger at one time, ie: chords. So if the polyphony were set to, say, 4, if you held down four notes you'd hear them all, but when you pressed a fifth, the oldest note would shut off to make room for it. With the polyphony down to one it makes the Subtractor a monophonic synth, meaning no more than one not can play at a time. Does that help?
@cicadacom LOL, i've been using reason for years and i've always called it REDdrum. but i guess REEdrum makes more sense... i'll continue calling it REDdrum just cause it sounds more sinister. Great vid BTW. I just started using nanoloop but i like the ease of reason so much more.
All of the songs from the tutorial are available in the archive on my site. The one in this video is called "Boing Boing," but I didn't spend much time on it, so don't expect much. I'll put a link in the video description.
@rajam4 To my knowledge, there's no way to do what you're wanting to. I don't think there's any way currently to send midi information to a Gameboy but I'd love for someone to prove me wrong!
I was just given a contract where I needed to write chiptunes and this video helped tremendously. Thank you kindly for taking the time to create this, and the generosity to post it.
You have to finish and upload the first song you showed us through this great tutorial. I instantly fell in love with it and I want to hear more!

You inspired me! Started referring to LFO2 as LF-toe instead after watching this video.. :')
On a serious note (hah), thanks for a good tutorial.
For scream, same deal. Loaded it up with default settings, flipped the distortion type to "digital" and then played with the rate and resolution knobs till I got a sound I was happy with.
Thanks alot! This goes straight on my playlist and my mp3 player.
Keep up the good work!

fantastic thanks alot :)
ive got it ordered looks like a great program to work with :)
thanks for the help.
Very good stuff. Simple and to the point.

Scream distortion was already included in Reason 3, check the menu again. The Thor synth and the mastering suite you will have to buy Reason 4 to get.
Thanks. I tried a whole bunch of different samples and got some neat sounds from them. I just wanted to know which you used 'cause I liked some of them.
Some day the world will recognize Tettix's genius.
Until then, we'll always have beat boost amirite?

Yeah, there's a lot of great sounds in that sampler. I really enjoy modeling my own sounds, though.

What a cool guy! Thanks!
Nice. I've been looking for something like this to help me out with Reason, as i'm only familiar with DP6 and Peak Pro for editing and sequencing.
Dude, I have to send massive good vibes your way, because you really saved my butt on a deadline I had to make. If you check out my website, the tune I wrote using everything you talked is on the right, if you'd like to here it. Thanks a million!
Is it the Keep Rolling track? It's great! Really great work!

This track is just called "Boing Boing." I actually linked to it specifically in the video info - click on more info, its the second link.

It's a Midines. It's available from Wayfar industries - you can just google "Midines" (it won't let me post links in comments.)
nice tune
@navelolol I can't post a link into a comment, but there's a link in the video description to my song archive. This song is called "Boing Boing."
Pronounce it how you will, but it's a reference to Kubrick's "The Shining." Redrum is Murder backwards.
All of the songs from the tutorial are available in the archive on my site. The one in this video is called "Boing Boing," but I didn't spend much time on it, so don't expect much. I'll put a link in the video description.
Awesome!
holy crap you have a LOT of tracks on your site :') very cool stuff man, i take it you like bit music! XD
I worded that wrong. I meant like a normal typing keyboard. Not a "piano" kinda keyboard.
3:33
I like my tones like I like my women. Nice harsh and flat.
hey i got reason 3. how do i get like screamer and stuff
@LittleJoysmusic Girrrrrrrl, TELL me about it!
where can i hear the full quality tune at?
My Subtracktor does not make a sound when i press a key, i could use some help.
Very nioce tutorial by the way, thanks allready. :) 5/5

Do I have to have a MIDI Keyboard to use this?
Or will my keyboard work?
Hey whats the track in this vid called, so i can download it off the link in the side bar?
i enjoyed the tutorial, but i think the bass and the lead synth got glossed over a bit
(Yeah, noob question...) What did you say at 3:37 and what does it mean?
what samples do you have loaded into Redrum?
Red-drum?
Mate it's Ree-drum
@navelolol nevermind to myself
