Dog Parks & Dog Bars: Set Your Dog Up For Success

  • If you want your dog to have as much fun socializing at a dog park or dog bar as you do then you need to set your dog up for success!
    It's great to be able to bring our dogs along when we go out to socialize so a dog bar is a perfect idea! However, as I say it all of the time, dogs aren't people (🤯 😆) and we can't just expect to throw them together with a bunch of other strangers and naturally just be super happy and comfortable with it. Sure some dogs can but most dogs need some safe acclimation. This video is about introducing them to strangers (and any new environment really) at their pace so that you set them up for success in meeting new friends rather than setting them up to scuffle due to stress.
    **Don't rush it - give them time to get comfortable with their surroundings before releasing them to the pack of strangers
    **Don't forget that you brought a dependent to the bar - it's quite literally like bringing a 5-year-old to the bar - even though you are there to socialize too, keep one eye on your pup at all times to be able to intervene if needed
    **Let dogs be dogs - most of the time it's good for dogs to work through their own stuff and find their place among friends, however, not all domesticated dogs are good communicators anymore the way that we have bred them and not all humans are good at knowing when their dogs have had enough. pull your dog out while they are still happy and having fun so that is the experience that they leave the dog bar with and the energy that they bring back to the dog bar. If you wait until they are really tired and they get into it with another dog because of that, you are running the risk that they have a poor experience and will return with some anticipatory stress, meaning, they won't have as much fun as they could, or, they may not enjoy the dog bar visits anymore.
    **Keep your canines current on all vaccines against diseases that can get transmitted such as bordetella (kennel cough) and canine influenza on top of their core vaccines (distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis, and rabies). most facilities require the core vaccines but the others protect your dog against air-borne illnesses that are easy to transmit and can make your dog sick.

    Dog parks are my favorite place to go with my pup because he has so much energy and he's so social. My biggest problem with him is that he gets so excited and wants to bark and wrestle with every dog. I have been researching dog body language for months now and I feel like there's new things to learn all of the time. When I first started taking him to the dog park, I knew he was a loud, energetic guy but is not aggressive so I never worried about how he was acting. Then I started realizing that he was making a lot of other dogs uncomfortable and not always paying attention to subtle cues that they were stressed. The best thing I've done lately is pay attention to other dogs' body language and distract him/move him on to some other appropriate activity when I can tell he isn't noticing the stress cues. I hope he eventually gets better at picking the right dogs to play with, he's still pretty young.
    My main problem now is owners that think play vocalization is aggression 😬

      Amanda - I couldn't love this more!! Way to be environmentally aware - it's one of the best gifts that you can give to your dog in keeping them comfortable and welcome in group dog settings! There are so many different play styles with dogs and encouraging your dog to stick with other dogs that better compliment his play style, the better for all involved. I wish more doggie owners would be comfortable speaking up about what they are seeing from learning more about dog body language to help everyone at the dog bar have a great time.
      I know how you feel on vocalizations - I had an owner last week ask me how to make his dog stop growling when he was playing because it concerned other people. My solution wasn't to change the dog's behavior, rather educate the humans around him as to when he is playing what is normal for him, specifically, and how it differs from a warning growl.
      Thanks so much for sharing!

      What if the dogs pee or defecate in park?
      Don't you worry about zoonotic / horizontally transmitted diseases?
      what's the ticket cost to get enter in a dog park?
      Are their any other conditions for owners to follow?

    I find it so annoying when other owners don’t take care of how their dogs behave in the park. Some almost waits for dogs to fight, scream and cry and still just leave it to the dogs to solve.

    My dog is a rescue and I've had him a little less than a year. I have a quarter acre yard that's fence so he's only been in my yard and he is very dog selective. He has not been outside of my yard other than going to dog training which I have to take him straight back to the training area or to the vet and with the vet I have to check him in when there's no other dogs in the lobby and then take him into a room and wait until the vet is ready for him because he can't be around other dogs. This video has given me a lot of comfort on having a dog with a muzzle and its help to know how to select the muzzle and train the dog to wear the muzzle. I am looking to purchase a muzzle and I'm excited to do that in to train my dog Mac to wear the muzzle. Thank you again for this video.

    We have a very social and friendly pit bull mix and although he means well and just want to play with ALL dogs..people can sometimes overreact bc he is indeed a pit but you confirmed that all his actions are 100% normal play!! And he’s also a pup that doesn’t bark or growl so that’s never an issue he’s just very excited and happy and looooooves to play w dogs and I feel like some people really see that energy as aggressive but like you’ve said dogs have different energy levels and as owners we all have to watch after dog body language.
    I’m trying so hard to make sure these other dogs that maybe older, slower, and more relaxed feel like they can hangout.. but it’s hard, what do I do? Do I immediately leave ? Or what do I reinforce so my pup learns that some dogs you just don’t mess with..

    Out of all dog tools I like to use, an e-collar is the best choice to “leave on your dog” in this Scenario, anytime my Doberman is off leash I’ll keep it on. mainly to reinforce a re-call if I need too. Definitely would not keep a prong on or any other complex collar, another dog could easily snag it.

    I don’t know if you can help but I have a generally great yorkie mix but he’s so hard to train because he’s not really food motivated and I’ve been trying to capture behavior but he won’t repeat it on command. I’ve tried basics 1 but no change should I take him to a train and board or are there ways to train him?

    • @SaraOndrako
      @SaraOndrako  3 роки тому

      Hi Amanda - don't give up! 😊 Every dog is different, and not every dog is motivated by food. Try figuring out what does motivate your dog such as verbal praise, affection, playing with a specific toy, a squeaky, etc. A professional trainer can definitely make the process a lot easier for you but I would recommend working with a trainer that will teach you directly how to work with your dog - not sending him away to a board and train. The reason being, he will work beautifully for the trainer but may be back to old habits at home very quickly if you aren't given the skills to work with him without a trainer once the training is done.
      A couple other tips to help: make sure you give him set feeding times (don't let him graze throughout the day). Only feed him part of his food (about 1/3 to 1/2 at each meal) and use the remaining food just to give him a piece here or there throughout the day when he is exhibiting behavior that you like. I would also put what food you do give him during meal times in something fun like a puzzle ball. Hope that helps! E collars are not like shock collars. It’s and extension of your voice and touch when your dog is too far away from you. It’s less than a vibration to tell the dog that you want them. It takes training to get to that level as do everything with a dog. E collars are not used as punishment

    • @SaraOndrako
      @SaraOndrako  2 роки тому +8

      Zack - e-collars do deliver a shock or "stimulation" based on the setting when the stimulus is delivered to the dog. E collars are most definitely used as punishment - more often than not - which is the problem in dog training, as well as owners that try to use these without solid direction. What you are describing (in my professional opinion) is how trainers _should_ be using e-collars but often do not and rely on them as a source of positive punishment or negative punishment (based on use). I would LOVE to see more trainers teaching people how to positively condition a recall using the collar without punishment. I've done it with a couple of deaf foster dogs without using any form of punishment and it's worked well. In my experience, most trainers and owners are not using it this way and that is why I end up working with dogs that are attacking their owners or housemates from misuse of e-collars. The reality of the situation is that they are capable of shocking the dog and they are used for punishment substantially more than as a cue for recall. Hopefully, as more trainers and pet parents are educated on the downside to punishment, we'll see a shift in how e-collars are used as well.

    Hello Sara! i was just watching your video, and was wondering what if your dog is dominant? My dog is a staffordshire pitbull/ malamute and i would like to socialize him a bit more, but lately on walks he has been showing signs of dominance and aggression. He shoots his head up , and is becomes very stiff. Sometimes even snaps and growls at other dogs that get too close. I know he is so sweet, but it frightens the other owners. I want to change that by getting him out, and meeting new friends! Thank you for your time.

      @maricarmenservin6733 3 роки тому +6

      hello , I know I am not sara or a dog trainer for that matter but I've studied dog behavior for a while and have a dominant dog myself. He is very big and can be a handful, id say when you see your dog be dominant you stop the behavior immediately and you put them in a submissive position. Meaning, have them lay on the ground head down until you tell them to get up, no matter what. This shows the dog that above all YOU are the alpha and do not allow this behavior. Do not pet or give the dog any affection while doing so and don't be afraid to be stern. Release them once they have calmed down and have accepted defeat in a way. Some dogs need a bit more force to get the point across. You can also use an ecollar on the vibrate or lowest setting if the dog likes to run away from you. Hope this helps!

    These are horrible , your dog doesn't need to sniff and meet every new dog it sees, in fact it often stresses them out, making them act more aggressive. And prong collars are not bad ideas. They mimic the nip of their mother when trying to control a wild dog to better acclimate a dog when walking. More should be used. This woman is not a good source for training

    • @SaraOndrako
      @SaraOndrako  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Stella! "This woman" here 😉 - I completely disagree - especially with your prong collar comment. Dogs very much know the difference between us and other dogs and that we have different communication signals. Not to mention - mother dogs don't "nip" all the way around the neck in 20 different touch points all at once. Prong collars are used inappropriately the majority of the time so the idea of more pet parents getting them and misusing them on their dogs is not one in the positive direction of teaching and guidance with clear communication. Quite the opposite.
      Secondly - there are plenty of dog-social dogs out there that enjoy romping around with other dogs. There's nothing wrong with providing that social exposure for them. Not all dogs want to socialize with other animals in groups (nor should all dogs) but it's great for dogs that really enjoy it. Lastly - not at any point would allowing your dog to socialize at a dog bar or park constitute your dog sniffing and meeting every dog that they see. They simply get the opportunity to interact (sniff and engage) in this specific situation - that doesn't mean the same rules apply when out walking on leash or passing other dogs in other settings. Happy UA-cam surfing!
