The very first battle. It was so unlike anything I had ever played before. In a game with dozens of memorable moments (only some of which were due to the fantastic-yet-oft-inappropriate-for-younger-players-involving-tigers-or-ropes translation), that's the one which stands-out the sharpest.

Countless memorable moments since Tales of Phantasia was way ahead of it's time, but one of the most memorable moments would have to be when the flying demon army was bearing down on Migdar, so you hop onto Odin's steed with Arche and take to the skies to wipe them out.

It has a lot, but i think it was bette appreciated back un the day, the combination of sad moments, respite fun moments and plot twits was pretty good and much unseen at that point. The thing is many of the things it did are common nowadays in other tales of and jrpg games.

Honestly, as a child, I remember a scene on a boat, describing Archie's behavior in the bedroom. I was about 13 and found this utterly hilarious.

Loved finally being able to play this on PS1 -- seeing the screenshots in the SNES days was mouthwatering.
The action-oriented battle system was really unique for the time and has now become industry standard.

This was one of the first if not the first SNES game to have a fully-voiced intro theme. This game was absolutely beautiful but it could be brutal at times and the enemy encounter rate was much higher than several other RPGs of that time.

I remember saving up and buying a copy from an importer out of the back of EGM for like $80. Didn’t know a fucking bit of Japanese and I still played the game all the way through. Absolute fucking masterpiece and the most unique rpg experiences I’d ever had until TWEWY came out.

In addition to having way better controls and crisper graphics and sound, the PlayStation version adds several new summons and boss fights, a second melee character (Suzu), and gives Chester a suite of skills instead of having him only be able to attack.
It also lets you map party member skills to certain buttons, greatly broadening your tactical options (hint: mapping Klarth's and Arche's weakest spells to your hotkeys let's you really go through the Shadow dungeon, because while the monsters there can spam their big spells faster than you can cast your big spells, the weak spells come out practically instantly and interrupts the enemies' casting (Dhaos uses a similar gimmick against you during his fights).

For the longest time, the best translation to look out for was Phantasian Productions, everyone had many high hopes for it, because at the time it seems they were the only ones who could do it. I remember their forums were so bustling and popular, and they were taking their time. Years passed by but still everyone was still eagerly anticipating for its release.
When Absolute Zero from nowhere suddenly released their TOP Translation, seemingly overnight, Phantasian Productions forums almost DIED immediately. Suddenly, no one was interested in them anymore. When they did eventually release their translation, no one really seemed to care anymore. Since then they keep announcing new projects, but no one really took them seriously anymore and it slowly died and faded into obscurity. :)

The angle of the town map and the story's beginning reminded me of Sega's Shining Force. I was blown away by the AI's in the battlefield. It's real time, and the team mates really act on your strategy to play defense, offense, magic, healing etc. It's like in real life where you lay out the strategy but go with the flow or be surprised by their actions in battle. It makes you feel like the teammates have a mind of their own.

I played Symphonia before I even knew Phantasia was a thing. My most memorable moment was hearing the music and recognising a lot of it from Symphonia, I thought that was super cool. Also noticing all the parallels between the games since Phantasia takes place after Symphonia. I would love if they made a game about the Kharlan Wars that took place before the story of Symphonia, but I know they never will.

I discovered and played the game on game boy advance, and it is definitely a solid title for that platform. Like many of the Final Fantasy ports, the tales port is pretty faithful while adding some minor quality of life changes. Not sure if it is available in the SNES, but on GBA you are able to disable spells that you don’t want your mages to cast. Which pretty much results in you disabling all of the spells that have really long animations despite how good they are. It doesn’t really hurt because most of the you’ll just be casting Thunder over and over once you get it. Short animation, hits EVERYTHING.
You can tell it is an ancestor to Star Ocean because Tri-Ace definitely carried over extensive spell animations. At the very least you can rejoice because the spell Southern Cross is not in Tales lol.

The most memorable part of the game for me is, surprisingly, the story. While it was definitely cliché in modern standards, it was quite new and innovative to me as a kid.
To add, it was the FIRST game that made me second guess myself if I'm the good guy for killing a man that only wanted to save both his AND my own characters' world. That's what made the story memorable for me.

Having played that game not much longer after my first full play through of Chrono Trigger. I couldn't help but feel the similarities between the time periods and what you do in one having an effect in others. One of the later side quests were focused entirely on that, much like Robo's ridiculously long time spent curating the land for that side quest. How it changed an entire area to be very different in the "present" world. Really set the stage for later Tales games, particularly the spirits not just being cool summons but also actual god-like beings in the world with a whole legion of lesser variants.

One of the very best for sure!
I remember the first time I tried to go through it... The patched rom at that time (around 2000/2001) was most of the time plagged by the infamous "chicken bug", turning every item in your inventory in "chicken" at some point (around the Midgard attack), even the sorcerer's ring, making the game unplayable!
    Very frustrating :p
Fortunately some proper patches appeared, and I was able to enjoy most versions of the game (SNES/psone/GBA) since then :D
"Fighting of the spirit" is the best fucking boss songe ever!

UUUUUGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!! This happened to my rom all the time and i didn't finish the game for years. And every time I tried to pick it back up, the patch issues and other oddities would deter me until I finally lost the usb drive the rom was on and I had to patch a new one....and used a proper patch! Also I think the emulators needed some updates because of the sound chip on the cart. I forgot if it was ZSNES or SNES9X but one of them had issues with the rom because of that until a few years down the line.

I think the best moment is returning to the present to save your friends before Dhaos can kamehameha them. Getting pwned by that tiny spike enemy that one-shots everyone but the flying witch in the deep mines is where I quit playing. Also, could never beat the later Dhaos fight. Hit him with a ton of Indignation spells and it was like the game was glitched so he wouldn't die. Then I later found out that there is a ninja girl and a ninja village that I completely missed out on because I had the SNES version instead of the PS1 version. Maybe I'll come back to this one some day.

I grew up on the GBA version but its unbearable distance between saves in the mid game coupled with embarrassingly unhelpful allies for hours of gameplay just killed it for me when I was old enough to finally beat the first boar boss. Didn't help that my cartridge was years old by the time I was 16 and able to comprehend an rpg and would crash randomly if I nudged the gameboy in the wrong way (very easy w how tiny the SP was) and would lose hours of progress. I still was blown away by it being one of the only games with extensive voice acting, quality aside, and more involved combat mechanics than the competition. It felt like an early spiritual predecessor to kingdom hearts to me and recently I've acquired the english patch on my Wii and have been loving the game and all the version differences, such as the running boots being unlocked by default in gba or the gba/psx melee combat being far stronger at juggling and dealing with airborne enemies. Still, the graphical upgrades and 100x bigger screen has been a delight and I can't wait to explore the rest of the tales series once I complete Phantasia.

Otherwise something to note is that was the first official English Translation and while fan projects did a decent job they did what a fair number of translations do and be too overly literal with it that certain things don't really make sense or have odd lose of translation in them, and then even the Japanese ends up not making sense. If you start late, going back can feel like everything feels limited with many things so I would say:
start with Eternia because it originated many of the tales of staples like cooking, having magic not pause the flow of battle and is more faster and aggresive, you can combo three normal attacks too and I feel the sense of adventure can be felt through the whole game, even if it was a 2D Tales game (imo, 2d tales games are awesome!).
If you want to play classic 3d titles, Symphonia or Abyss is a good start for the series.
If your absolutely curious about the series and are acostumed with retro games, Tales of Phantasia and Destiny is the way to go.
Want to play some past titles but are acostumed with later titles that has everything that tales is known for?

Really sucks that Bamco won't give this game a modern remake nor remaster. Especially now when the Tales series is more popular than it ever was back then. Guess their controlling nature is coming back to bite.

True, hopefully they'll consider it someday!

Good game but I liked Star Ocean better.

I prefer the PS1 version of this game I can't stand the SNES versions battle system however the only official English version we got was the CRAPPY GBA version of the game that had a really horrible translation of the game but that version KEPT the PS1 versions battle system.

Wish they would Re-Release Tales of Phantasia, Destiny and Eternia to new consoles.
Instead they keep re-releasing Symphonia multiple times -_-

Disagree. Chrono Trigger is the best SNES game, hands down imo. And is only 32 megabits.
