Ben, I am Malaysian , I think most U.S citizen like to walk. My younger sister when she was studying Phd in Denver University used to walk from her rented house to the campus. It took her 15 minutes every day. Further more, it is comfortable walking in the cool weather
I suggest you stay in Kl through Songkran because it wont take you long to realize getting sprayed with iced cold water everywhere you go for 12 days is unenjoyable. Maybe lots of workers at Wanjo restaurant don't understand English well. Most of them are from Indonesia. Their reactions seem silly and hurtful. They're not Malaysians. In Kuala Lumpur, there are way too many foreign workers. Hope you can forget about that table experience. Keep making videos without caring about negative comments
i just watch planet doug"s video and he just met an indonesian working at a reception counter of a well known camera brand. they are all over the place.
The barebone nasi lemak consists of the rice cooked in coconut milk plus the sambal (spicy condiment). When I was little we used to have this type of barebone nasi lemak (wrapped in banana leaf) we could buy for 10 cents. The cucumber slices, the peanut and anchovies are what we call the accessories; they are not absolutely necessary. I suggest the next time you have nasi lemak, try to taste the barebone nasi lemak first. This way you can tell whether the nasi lemak is good. The other ingredients you can eat later. By the way, eating nasi lemak with chicken only became popular about 20 years ago.
Ignore the haters mate they are just jealous and wish they are in your position, u travel around the world and u are happy 😊just do u mate and never change 😊
Malaysia has lots of foreign workers from Indonesia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, and out of 10 persons that you bump into on the street of where your hotel is, 7 may be non Malaysians.
Yea it’s crazy to many just how many immigrants are actually here, and it outnumbers the Malaysians but I’m sure there are many neighborhoods where there are very few immigrants right?
@@benfisherminmostly the immigrant work in the restaurant like Wanjo.. sorry to see you're missed treated .. probably they can't even speak English or Malay. I got irritated many time too, being a local

Sorry for the bad experience at Wanjo normally there's 2 lines the dine in and take out. You were at the take out line. Wanjo does have a lot of migrant workers that may have either zero English education to some level of English. For some it may seem intimidating as they don't know how to communicate with you effectively (they will say yes to everything) but iftar time is quite busy time you maybe SOL there, maybe you should ask or find a Malaysian worker. Theres probably 20 migrant workers and 1 native born Malaysian there, the boss is always Malaysian (hint hint). If that doesn't work you could ask a random Malaysian customer there too i am sure some of them are willing help you, Malaysians aren't like Newyorkers in a hurry to do the next thing, Malaysians prefer to move at snail's pace lol and late for everything lol (the stereotype). People on the comments are trying to make your life easier they're not telling you what to do but they're saying what you should be doing . YOLO right? .
I think they don't understand English. Infact they are not laughing at you but they are laughing at themselves because they don:t understand English. Next time try and ask some of the Malaysian customer. Mostly they are willing to help. Therefore next time if you communicate in English with the worker and they start laughing instead of answering your questions that means they don't speak or understand English. Don't hesitate to get some help from the local Malaysians
So next time when you start asking the restaurant worker or anything and they start looking at you, they start fiddling, laughing that mean they don't understand and don't speak English. When you happen to encounter this kind of people better ignore them and look for Malaysian among the customer or talk to the owner of the reastaurant
I noticed the sign about one side being dine-in and one side takeout, and immediately I asked one guy and he said no problem to stay in that line for dine in. I had a plate first to eat inside but after 10 min or so not being able to find a seat I gave up and had them change it to takeaway. Yea I think it was mostly their lack of English and breaking fast time, I don’t blame them too much for it.
I've watched another UA-camr that claimed there is another nasi lemak place thats better than Wanjo. Also in the Kampung Baru area. Smaller and less known but great service and food. I think Wanjo's case is like their fame has caught up, so you are basically correct, can't expect warm service from a place like that.
100%, I always try to at least have a 20 min walk after any meal. If i have my last meal and then just sit + sleep after I don’t digest the food as well too
I thoroughly enjoy your walk and talk videos. At least you're staying healthy and looking in tip-top shape! The folks, in the comments, who are telling you to take the train are all probably overweight and in poor health. Keep on waking bro.😊
Yea maybe, I was just annoyed they helped the Chinese girls who also didn’t have any type of reservation. But really it’s no big deal I think they barely understood what I was saying 🤷♂️
wanjo is just ok ok. better try village park. if u want to get the best nasi lemak u better look for the small stalls that only open in the morning around the office buildings.
Glad to see that you have tasted one of the best comfort food in Malaysia, the nasi lemak. Too bad, the place was fully packed and has caused you an inconvenience.
Honestly, the Wanjo staff should have been more courteous and helpful to you in getting you a seat to dine in the place. However, it's clear from your story that you've been neglected, causing quite a bad reputation to Wanjo. Hope that you will not be disheartened by the inconvenience and hope that Wanjo is more alert with all their customers. I think some of the staff have language barriers speaking and understanding English. I've seen in an earlier video that some girls behind the food counter didn't seem to understand what an American guy was asking and quick to dismiss whatever he was asking, it was definitely a mis communication. As for the group of 4 that were entertainment with the request for a table after you've been denied, it didn't sound right to you. Again, don't feel bad about it.
Haven't finished watching the video. But hey, if you start to have a little bit of negative comments, you're on the right path. It's part of channel growth. Haha. Don't let that stop you, friend. Keep doing what you do. :)
It has been since long time ago. If you walk though Kg Baru, you could feel the vibes of Indonesia. There's a lot of "kedai Acheh" too. And most of the people working/living there are Indonesians.
It seems like this, which is interesting to me because everyone tells me kampung baru is the most local area and the place where I should eat Malay food
As a non Muslim, u can eat anywhere during Ramadan ,Non Muslim Restaurants are open,Malaysian understands, the police / Security just over..Go to MC D,Kopitiam..
Almost all Malaysians can speak English (it is our 2nd language) so those who can't are most probaby other nationalities who work in Malaysia. Those staff who did not repond to your request for a seat must have been Indonesians and not Malaysians. Sorry for your bad experience at Wanjo.
Sorry, i go to mamak indian muslim restaurants at 6.30pm. Take the food and eat and drink there. So go to wanjo at 6.30pm when i am sure it is less crowded. Sit there and eat your nasi lemak. Muslims generally are used to people eating and drinking when working in F & B. The food is ready there. Unlike in a bazaar night market where you are suppose to take away coz no tables and chairs at the night markets. Get it ?
Ben, if you are reading this it's not that they do not want to help you get a table or seat but during RAMADHAN priority is always given to our Muslim brothers and sisters tables or seats in readiness for breaking fast around 7. 25pm. Some restaurants even have reserved tables for customers. If you had come during non breaking fast time you would easily get a seat to consume yr meal. Besides I also suspect the workers do not understand English well as they are mainly migrants though some do understand smatterings og English.
Priority to Muslims to open fasts and tourists rejected dan terasa... .....no no no this not our ways...belajar laaa. jaga nama baik Malaysia....one mistake by a staff, nama baik tergugat....I am sure that waiter will be reprimanded..Walaupun nasi lemak ini adalah nasi lemak Malaysia tapi nama "Wanjoo" is a district/a tribe in Indonesia, so do expect all of the workers are with Indonesian ways....
I understand the reserved table part, I only got annoyed when they rushed to help seat the pretty Chinese girls who came after me. Maybe they just didn’t understand me. In my experience Indonesians are still nice people, I spent almost 2 years in bali with only good things to say about them. Malaysians too really great and never had an issue. I went back two times after and had a nice experience so I won’t worry too much about that first time
Here is the thing about Puasa. I really dont care if I eat in front of those who's fasting whether its Muslim or Hindu. That is their relationship with god and their beleifs. Don't make me part of it. That doesn't mean I deliberately try to eat in front of them.
What one thing foreigners need to know when they visit Malaysia is that, Malaysians(majority) will understand English because its taught in our school syllabus. And there are many migrant workers especially in KL. Why didn't you just sit there and eat your food..its only what 30+minutes left you said before breaking of fast. You are just a few foreigner that i've seen, who can eat with their hands. Getting Grab during peak hours and at your location is almost impossible. The best nasi lemak is usually the ones sold by the aunties by the roadside. Obviously those are foreign workers who may not understand English that's why you're ignored. We, Malaysians do not prejudice against muslims or non muslims, local or foreigners. Sorry you have to go through such thing. Those workers won't dare to act indifferent towards the locals or else the boss gets complains.
I’m so surprised how rare it is with foreigners eating with the hands. I’ve talked to locals a few times now who were shocked too and said they haven’t seen a white person eating with their hands in probably a year. I couldn’t believe it lol. I did live in Indonesia so I learned it there but at the same time I think it makes sense for the style of food, taking meat off bones, etc.
As long as it’s without sugar I can have it. People told me I should eat Indonesian sambal because it’s more spicy and no sugar, or little sugar compared to Malay style
Love the way u blogging keep going. u understand life more as a human being. Please check it out our Botanical gardens near Bird park . Very close where u stay right now... I like the way u turn negative or whatever bad thing to position attitude. That's great 👍... Enjoy ur stay in MALAYSIA.
Hi Ben, sorry for the bad experience. Usually malay locals would eat nasi lemak for breakfast and being in Ramadhan they would be breaking their fast at home or in the mosques. If there were locals there , most definitely they would assist u to get a table or very willing to share their table. 33 ringgit for what you had was pricey though . Most restaurant in Malaysia take immigrants for their staff, either Bangladeshi ( mostly can speak & understand English) , frm Myanmar ( mostly can speak &understand English) , Indonesian ( mostly Cannot speak & understand English) . Since most of the staff in Wanjo were Indonesian immigrants, u should have tried speaking to them in Indonesian since u said u stayed there for 2 years. There’s not much difference between Malay & indonesian language. Ben, I think u should try to learn a little bit of Malay whilst u’re here. It won’t hurt u know. Who knows, u might even get discounts or free food ..😊
16:00 - I'm sorry you had to endure that... I guess you went there at bad timing... the locals will crowd that place or any other restaurant an hour before the breaking of fast during the fasting month of Ramadan... my suggestion to you is to come an hour after the breaking of fast to eat... it will be less crowded then... (ask around when the breaking of fast time).... about the laughing waiters, i know for a fact that they have poor command of English, hence they are just hiding their ignorance by laughing...
FYI normally people buy food and eat at home or restaurant. For restaurant you need to buy smthg and sit. Or book first for certain restaurant. FYI FOR STALL IF THEY PROVIDE TABLE MEAN THEY ARE KIND PERSON IN THIS FASTING MONTH. FOR MUSLIM RESTAURANT NORMALLY CLOSE ONLY OPEN CLOSE TO IFTAR TIME. MALAYSIAN ENGLISH NORMALLY GOOD. WELCOME TO MALAYSIAN CULTURE 😅😅😅
I've tried Wanjo before . My honest opinion , it's tasty alright , but overrated and pricey af . The waitress aslo serve me lesser rice for idk what reason . As a local myself I feel disappointed .
Without you telling us what was the differences between different places...we would definetely not know what are the the differences....i just dont get it why are some ppl can get annoyed...

Yea now realize it's mostly all indonesian workers and they just barely understood what I was even saying. So far all the Malay people I come across speak english really well!
Ben,the sales not allowed inthere, they are allowed to eat there but not selling their product..Wanjo is overated, there are many other diner areas selling nasi lemak etc
If possible avoid going to popular muslim eateries during the breaking fast time (7.15-8.00pm). Save your sanity 😂 Muslims breaking fast + tourists + limited hours of operations because they close during fasting hours = chaos
They are young, probably somewhat immature, lack life experience/ training , perhaps education and also lowly paid and motivated. Also in Asian culture sometimes they laugh when they do not understand, feel embarrassed but reaction in likely not intended to be rude. It may be hard for westerners initially to understand since it is opposed to their unfront direct communicating styles. As well, as you have already mentioned, you do not know if tables had been pre-booked, and if the group mentioned were regulars or if they know someone there and hence the preferential or perceived shabby bias treatment.
Malaysia has great food. Go to Jalan Alor, I know you don't think much of it, but try Wong Ah Wah order butter prawns, bbq chicken wings, baby gai lan, that should be enough for one.
wanjo is OVERATED and PRICEY. Theres thousands of other Nasi Lemak out there that are much better in terms of flavours and PRICE. Hope you will find them soon! Happy exploring Ben
Wait. You spent 2 years in Indonesia, which also means you spent at least 1 ramadhan there, and yet you were unprepared for some of the ‘ramadhan attitudes’ here in Kuala Lumpur. I’m going to hazard a guess that Indonesians are not as uptight and reactive as Malaysians are, or can be, towards people who do not fast during ramadhan. Part of this assumption comes from my sister who has spent time working in Indonesia and told me that even muslims can eat, unharassed, in public spaces during ramadhan, provided it is done discreetly.
Well I was in Bali where there I think it’s less than 10% Muslim. Probably if I was in Java or even Jakarta I’d have experienced something a bit more. And also tons of western expats in bali too. But even the locals now here in Malaysia told me I shouldn’t worry about eating in public, of course using some courtesy not to make things more difficult for those fasting which makes sense

Ben, I am Malaysian , I think most U.S citizen like to walk. My younger sister when she was studying Phd in Denver University used to walk from her rented house to the campus. It took her 15 minutes every day. Further more, it is comfortable walking in the cool weather
i enjoy your video,i'm malaysian
Thanks I’m glad you enjoy it 🙏🙏
I suggest you stay in Kl through Songkran because it wont take you long to realize getting sprayed with iced cold water everywhere you go for 12 days is unenjoyable. It isnt all what its cut out to be, but whatever blows your hair back. Me, I thought it was fun when I was about 10 but after that I thought it was a bit obnoxious.
Haha I went and enjoyed it for one long day 10hrs. Being wet and walking around like that my feet were destroyed and my skin too, that was enough
Yea I realize now they probably just didn’t understand me too well. At the time I was bothered but now I’ve forgotten about it 😁🙏
sorry for the trouble bro LOVE from Johor,Malaysia
No worries my friend thank you
The barebone nasi lemak consists of the rice cooked in coconut milk plus the sambal (spicy condiment).
Thanks that’s very nice I appreciate it 🤩
Malaysia has lots of foreign workers from Indonesia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, and out of 10 persons that you bump into on the street of where your hotel is, 7 may be non Malaysians.
Just ignore all those negative comments from the narrow minded people. To me your comments are sincere according to what you see and observe. Just enjoy yourself walking around Kuala Lumpur.
Thanks I appreciate it 😁😁
OMG you eat by hand? Just like locals do.. well done
Yea I like eating this way, especially for the food here it makes a lot of sense. People are always really shocked by this, I didn’t know how rare it was honestly!
Watching this video now...more to come...
Adding: there will ALWAYS be sprinkles of H8'rs in your comments, eBestie. Try to not let them bother u.
I KNOW ur a genuine, cool person. Walk whereverrrrrrr the hell u wanna damn walk! Lol. ...compare whateverrrrr u wanna compare.
Comparison isnt always a bad thing. HELL, i can compare steak with salmon...BUT I STILL LOVE BOTH. 🤷🏽♂️
~ Tazzz ~
Haha true haters gonna hate I suppose! Thanks a lot 😁😁
YOLO right? .
Memalukan malaysia😢
Nice, any idea about the name or exact location? 🤔
i'm just scrolling down the comments to see the guy who always says "i love you" in every video, yep there he is.
lol! So strange 😂😂
Walking is always good bro, especially after a carbo meal. It's a good hack for our blood sugar.
100%, I always try to at least have a 20 min walk after any meal. If i have my last meal and then just sit + sleep after I don’t digest the food as well too
You're looking way healthier without the green.
Thanks that’s good to hear 😁😁
I thoroughly enjoy your walk and talk videos. At least you're staying healthy and looking in tip-top shape! The folks, in the comments, who are telling you to take the train are all probably overweight and in poor health. Keep on waking bro.😊
Haha thanks! Yea some people just don’t like doing any level of physical activity or movement, or sweating at all.
Mostly...the empty tables r for people who have already reserved....
Travel to Kuching
I will be for sure 😃
Glad to see that you have tasted one of the best comfort food in Malaysia, the nasi lemak. Too bad, the place was fully packed and has caused you an inconvenience.
Hope that you will find the time to reply and appreciate the positive comments.
Yea it’s all good 😄
@@benfishermin Splendid. 😁
Please try Nasi lemak Bangsar Village. Local’s
Thanks I gotta try it! I can’t eat rice though or fried foods so I’m not sure if I can 🤔
Nice 👌👍👍 when u shaved u look young and professional ❤
Thank you I appreciate it 😁😁
You can't please everyone, just do you.
Wise words 😁😁
Explore other parts of the city,go to the suburbs,Take the MRT,LRT,
Haven't finished watching the video. But hey, if you start to have a little bit of negative comments, you're on the right path. It's part of channel growth. Haha. Don't let that stop you, friend. Keep doing what you do. :)
That’s true thanks a lot 😀
Another tip for you. Don't go to restaurant during break fast time 7pm-8pm. It'll be very crowded for sure.
Yea I learned my lesson 😅😁
I kept looking at your dimples 😂. Very nice…
Ha thanks I appreciate it
Kampung baru is becoming an indonesian village? Because the night bazaar there also has this same issue.
It has been since long time ago. If you walk though Kg Baru, you could feel the vibes of Indonesia. There's a lot of "kedai Acheh" too. And most of the people working/living there are Indonesians.
@@yancornetto86 so sad. No wonder I see so many indonesian people and stalls there
It seems like this, which is interesting to me because everyone tells me kampung baru is the most local area and the place where I should eat Malay food
Is the Rendang at Wanjo more delicious than Rendang from Indonesia? Indonesia has very delicious Rendang.
As a non Muslim, u can eat anywhere during Ramadan ,Non Muslim Restaurants are open,Malaysian understands, the police / Security just over..Go to MC D,Kopitiam..
Do go to Village Park Restaurant and bring an umbrella when you go out
I still need to try this place thanks
@@benfishermin you're welcome
Try kuah lemak cili api...it spicy😅
Ok thanks I’ll try!
Almost all Malaysians can speak English (it is our 2nd language) so those who can't are most probaby other nationalities who work in Malaysia. Those staff who did not repond to your request for a seat must have been Indonesians and not Malaysians. Sorry for your bad experience at Wanjo.
Yea definitely all Indonesian staff! That’s okay, usually the experience is very good except this one time
Vietnam next brother???
Hopefully very soon!
Get it ?
Yea makes sense
I went back two times after and had a nice experience so I won’t worry too much about that first time
U get more views in mlysia compared to thailand or indonesia bcoz malaysians speak english n watch english contents
Couldnt agree more 👍
Yea it’s a huge difference, big reason I decided to spend more time in Malaysia!
Here is the thing about Puasa. I really dont care if I eat in front of those who's fasting whether its Muslim or Hindu. That is their relationship with god and their beleifs. Don't make me part of it. That doesn't mean I deliberately try to eat in front of them.
You summed it up well I agree
Good experience
@@benfisherminExactly, easier using hands and somehow we find that the food tastes more appetising when eating using hands.
Your choice where you want to eat!
Yea true 😃
Frankly I never heard a shop rejecting people eating (a paying customer). Perhaps full house for breaking fast
Yea it was just full and I suppose the staff didn’t even understand what I was saying
Sambal belacan also bit spicy
As long as it’s without sugar I can have it. People told me I should eat Indonesian sambal because it’s more spicy and no sugar, or little sugar compared to Malay style
Indonesian workers couldn't understand 😭😭
Yea 100%
Love the way u blogging keep going. u understand life more as a human being. Please check it out our Botanical gardens near Bird park . Very close where u stay right now... I like the way u turn negative or whatever bad thing to position attitude. That's great 👍... Enjoy ur stay in MALAYSIA.
Thanks so much! Went recently to botanical gardens and uploaded a video, that place is so nice
Sorry for your experience at wanjo. Maybe the staffs dont understand english I think✌️
Yea true I think they just don’t understand me
wanjo's nasi lemak is just ordinary, i've tried it. try somewhere else
Yes true, went two other times and every time it’s consistently a 7/10 for me
16:00 - I'm sorry you had to endure that...
Yea it was just poor timing for me and the workers not understanding English, I went a few times after and everything was good
FYI normally people buy food and eat at home or restaurant.
That makes sense thank you 😁🙏
the tables is already booking from the customer .
Yea mostly but it bothered me when they helped seat the pretty Chinese girls who also had no reservation 😂
@@benfishermin i dont know what to say bro ,i just wish the best for you and enjoy our country🙌 .i am apologize as a malaysian people .
Ignore those rude Malaysians or any others bro. Bigotry happens in every country.
Ha that’s true, I guess all of the workers were Indonesian pretty much too. Except the women in hijabs serving the food they were super nice
I've tried Wanjo before . My honest opinion , it's tasty alright , but overrated and pricey af . The waitress aslo serve me lesser rice for idk what reason . As a local myself I feel disappointed .
Ah wow, yea I think it’s just OK not special for how popular it is, and also pricey too
Kenapa asyik recommend Wanjo?
Ada byk lg kedai lain
Hi I'm in kl this week . Like where
I don’t know but everyone recommended it to me so I had to try it

Exactly my friend, thanks for the comment
As a Malaysian,I feel disappointed with the staff of Wanjo Restaurant.. I'm sorry for your bad experience..there are so much more places to go other than Wanjo's..that place is overrated to be honest..I wish you all the best in your life.. you're welcome by me as a Malaysian..Enjoy your time in Malaysia..❤❤❤
You gone to a time they break their fasting and so it will have lots of people.
My bro from the City of Brotherly Love (Philly) FUCK THEM !!! Sorry got to this quite late. You can always try The Edge or The Base those are quite popular and i liked them, great location
Some people will moan or complain Ben, no matter what you say or do, Just do you, and remember they are interacting with you regardless! As for your treatment by these particular staff members, remember that you will not be liked or helped by everybody. You are a single, white male from the States,, and some will have preconceived ideas, take the piss or be disrespectful to you. It's not you mate, it's them! Try not to let it get to you too much!
Yea no big deal at the end of the day things happen right, and I suppose they didn’t really understand what I was saying too
They are Indonesian workers, they don't speak English much. Pity you, most Malaysians understands & speak English. That's not the way to treat a customer actually. The owner should someone who csn speak English better in the front line
Yea now realize it's mostly all indonesian workers and they just barely understood what I was even saying. So far all the Malay people I come across speak english really well!
Next time just buy random nasi lemak even the pre packed rm1.50 or 2.00 might taste lots better than Wanjo.
It’s true Wanjo is just OK not special
Ben,the sales not allowed inthere, they are allowed to eat there but not selling their product..Wanjo is overated, there are many other diner areas selling nasi lemak etc
If possible avoid going to popular muslim eateries during the breaking fast time (7.15-8.00pm). Save your sanity 😂 Muslims breaking fast + tourists + limited hours of operations because they close during fasting hours = chaos
Yea true, I learned my lesson now 😂
I love you
😂😂
@@benfishermin why are you laughing me . When i say i love you
They are not locals and dont understand English very well. Next time, try to talk to the cashier, usually the cashier can communicate in English.
Yea you’re right, cashier always speaks pretty good English!
Yea overall the food in Malaysia is my favorite of any country I’ve been to. Thanks for the tips!
wanjo is OVERATED and PRICEY.
