Heaven's Vault Review: Gamifying Actual Archaeology!

- Whenever we get a bit of popular fiction that takes a dive into the practice of archaeology, it usually...takes a few liberties to spice the proceedings up a bit. But Heaven's Vault is an unashamed, honest attempt to try and translate the actual study of ancient cultures into a consumable game. It's obviously not a one-to-one translation, but Heaven's Vault is something really unique and special that's not afraid to wholeheartedly embrace its subject matter instead of just using it for window dressing. If that sounds cool to you, then you're going to want to check out this First Five review!

the translation/linguistic/conlang mechanic is actually what made me aware of the game and why i want to play it. languages are my JAM, my current project is arabic, my 8th language. so like... maybe for some people that mechanic would be a turn off but for anyone interested in linguistics or conlanging (like with klingon or elvish), or even just learning new languages for fun, it's going to be an absolute blast.
That's so cool! I'm absolutely hapless when it comes to foreign languages, so I spent more time floundering than not when it came to trying to piece together Heaven's Vault's ancient hieroglyphs, but I can definitely see the appeal! More than anything, it's because I have such a difficult time with foreign language that I have such a deep respect for just how difficult a task Heaven's Vault set for itself making its linguistic gameplay not just fun, but also *accessible* to people like me.
It's rare to see game with translating a foreign language. Especially for a lot of English only speaking audiences.
As a bilingual, these games fascinate me.
Heaven's Vault is definitely pretty unique. I wish there were more games going out on limbs like this and Return of the Obra Dinn do (or, perhaps, the wish should be that more of those games become more visible).
You should check out outer wilds if you already have not.
Such an amazing experience, unique to gaming as a medium.
The sheer originality and art style of the game drew me in, but I was unsure about the language translation element. Now I'm more tempted because of the world building and story telling. Great review.
Reminds me of all that time I was lurking in Wiktionary looking up the etymologies of Japanese words, which taught me more about the internal logic of the language than any of the language classes.
Yeah, it's the same deal! Looking at a lot of other reviews for the game, it's amazing to see all the little grammatical details to the language that other people intuited that went completely over my head.
This is a fantastic review, thank you!
I'll be checking this game out. Thank you and keep up the good work! Can't believe you don't have more subs
I'm glad I found your channel, your reviews are very well done, and helpful! Thank you!
Glad you enjoy them!
Great review bro. Ty
I have just started playing this game, and the main thing that I like about it is that it draws you into a whole new world that you gradually discover as you play the game, and you keep wanting to find out more about it. It is a very original game.
great review.
What is the game at 0:41s?
This is one of my favorite games. Although totally understandable, it wouldn't work any other way, one of the biggest letdowns for me is that Ancient is just English with other words, but I love how the game forces you to walk so slow. In the beginning I found it annoying, but it gave me time to think and look at the area
This game looks really nice and pretty. The walking animations look really funny too haha.
nice.
In your intro where you show clips from other games, put the names of the game in the corner.
I do personally wish I wasn't required to fill in a blank space in the text with a word that could potentially sway my interpretation of it in the wrong way.
Still, as a linguist, this game is amazing and everyone should be playing it!
dat ann leckie drop! i love her books. i am for sure checking this one out
Ann Leckie is, like, one of my favorite things to happen to science fiction in like a decade.
@@FirstFive can't wait for the raven tower!
I think the word is pronounced more like the name. You said “her-cuel-yan,” but it’s a word based off the name and should be pronounced “herc-u-lee-an”
U play for 5h WOW i just subscribed i have a channel too but i cant play for 5h lol
I wonder if it's possible to completely get your translations wrong or if the game gives you hints when you're wrong?
I mean, if you start out with only 2 words, even the smallest mistake could eventually turn what's supposed to be
the most beautiful poetry into the most vile and putrid filth. Especially in my hands.
It's in a weird middle ground. After a word's come up three or four times, it'll tell you whether your translation was right or wrong, but that still gives you enough time to screw up a whole bunch of other words based off your first faulty translation.
This game is a nice idea poorly executed. It is not a video game, it is just horrible to play.
