I had a car a few years ago from a small German place in caleta same thing with the a.i insurance and on that occasion a day down in jandia was looking lovely.
Love to visit a small rural restaurant at Casa de la Naturaleza , for lunch , Vega del Rio Palmas, just outside Betancuria. Lovely place with the added attraction of its own turtle pool.
We have used a company called Autos Plus Car several times on the Canary Islands. Booked by internet & paid on pick up. The cars & service were good. The only time we broke down was on Fuerteventura. The car developed an electrical fault. They picked us up and replaced the car without any hassle. We were back on the road in 2 hours. The 4 other times using Plus Car we had no problems. They have offices all over the Islands.
I'll add to the Plus Car compliments. Been to Fuerteventura several times. They were recommended to me the first time and have used ever since. Nice and easy meeting them in the car park, paperwork done quickly and the holiday begins ☺☺
Absolutely brilliant video ladies thank you so much, my wife & I have been to caleta about 4 times now (5th I believe in September) we always go for 2 weeks & hiring a car is something I’ve thought about a couple of times but never really looked into so your video has been a MASSIVE help explaining who to trust etc - I’m gob smacked at how cheap they are to hire!! don’t know why but I thought it would a lot more expensive. Thank you again for covering a topic I’m sure loads will find really helpful 😎👍🏻
We didn’t hire a car here until we’d been a few times. As soon as we did it opened up so much of the island and completely changed our experience. So easy and a lot cheaper than people expect. Really glad you found it helpful, that’s our aim with these videos so thank you! 👍
Thank you so much for making this video, it was so helpful. We have been to the Canaries several times last was in 2019 to Fuerteventura and we are booked up to come the end of next April. Before that we are going to Lanzarote at the beginning of this October. We always hire a car and have used Hertz in the past, service and cars have always been good but price was always a little expensive. When looking for a car this time prices are very high and the deposit you have to leave is also very high. I was not aware of the different types of car hire and your video has made life so much easier. We have booked a car with one of the companies you recommended and have got a very good deal for our requirements thank you once again. We hope you are both well and also hope to see some new videos from you in the future, take care for now x
Thanks for taking us through the car hire process on FV. Great to hear you own recommendations on the best providers. Very straightforward but some good tips along the way. Thanks for a really useful vlog.
Fantastic vlog again ladies. Brilliant information. I used payless when I stayed in Dec/Jan, completely hassle free, lovely car, easy to book and collect - my flight was severely delayed, didn't land until 10:45pm, but one of their agents waited for me to collect the car. Satnavs, I have my own european satnav which doubles up as a dash cam with displayed telemetry details - just in case. Found it useful as I put sevrral hundred miles on the clock during my stay. Favourite journey, the beach road to Corralejo (featured on your vlog I think). Scariest drive, the road south from Betencuria to Pajara - clean underwear required ...
Good to hear, we’ve used Payless countless times without issue. Yes, it was the FV1-a through the dunes in Corralejo. We’re used to the mountain roads now but the first couple of times it did feel like you’re close to the edge on the ‘wrong’ side of the road 😀👍
Thank you ladies, very informative and helpful. We usually call into the Cicar office but now we know how easy it is to hire from the airport, we will do so in future 😊 Really appreciate your UA-cam videos.
Brilliant girls . Just what we needed to see . We have hired a car from our resort before and although it was no problem ,it was good to know what ones to avoid. We will be hiring a car next june when we come with friends in corralejo so will check out the ones you mentioned there . Thanks again look forward to next video xx
Just wondered Amelia if you have done a video based on your move to fuerteventura and how easy or hard it was for you ?. I have watched jp's one . And I do like watching you both but you have different styles of videos and it would be good to get another version of the process thanks 🙂
We haven’t. Never say never but at the moment I’m enjoying making the travel related videos. Personally we found the process fairly straightforward but it seems the rules are changing from 1st Jan when Brexit kicks in so I’m not sure how that will impact things.
Great informative video on car hire Amelia, no one has seemed to touched on this subject before, can be a bit of a minefield . I used Payless for years, good service , with desk in the airport. Then tried Pluscar, again good service and a bit cheaper than Payless but business done on the airport car park . However for the last 2-3 yrs, have used Autoreisen, and cannot fault them. Easy process, good prices and good service.
Concise, practical information. I'll be crediting this video to the car hire company I use, any viewer should too. Honest info like this deserves sponsorship from decent companies.
We've always rented a car from the airport. Used Autoriesen and Paylesscar. Both companies easy to deal with, Good prices when booked months in advance.
@@rustygtwoguns No, I made the booking online 2 months before I travelled. Paid on my card at the airport. No deposit or block on my card. I've never had any problems when dealing with either company.
Good video, for travellers, and yes a proper carhire company, no scams I have used autoreisen several times, and its always quick at the desk, and your will get a C3, never had anything different And value for money! keep those videos coming, helps the novice traveller in fuerteventura
To the point girl's! Best info I have seen yet, over in September and was a bit apprehensive about car hire, especially for short periods, top notch info👍 thanks girls😁
We have used auto risen for over 20 years in the canaries, and will be booking again, for our first time in fuerteventura this year 2023. Great company and no problems. Thanks for the information girls.

Just watched your very helpful video. I have now cancelled my car hire reservation with a different company and re-booked through AutoReisen - much cheaper than my original price. Many thanks for this helpful and informative advice!
We always book Payless for approx the last 15 years. Never any issues even when we accidentally filled up with petrol instead of diesel. Service is excellent would highly recommend them.
Love your vlogs, I worked for a car hire company in the 90s called Your Auto, we had a main office in Puerto del Sol, Caleta de Fuste and six others around the island, mine was in the Happy Center, great times! Are they still operating?
Hi Amelia and Sarah unfortunatly our holiday has been cancelled today we were coming to corolleco (excuse spelling) in October we were told today that our flights were no longer available due to Covid 19 so our holiday is cancelled i must say i am relieved at this timeof uncertainty i look forward to coming over there in the future when all has been sorted and hopefully a vaccine for this horrible virus we will still follow your videos i find them very informative thankyou for that fond regards from Rosemary xx
Jet2? They seem to have cancelled a lot this week as they are consolidating flights to fewer days a week. I’m sure you’ll be able to rebook when you feel more comfortable about flying. It’s difficult to know what to do for the best but you have to feel you can enjoy your holiday without worrying. Let’s hope it’s not too long before things are a bit more normal 😀
Great video, I'm really surprised how cheap car hire is there. It's quite a while since we hired a car while on holiday and this information is so helpful. The first time I hired a car was several years ago in Portugal and went with one of the really well known hire companies, it cost a fortune, I didn't make that mistake again. Thanks for sharing
Amelia great precise information I personally use cigar booked through cabarera Medina easy to book lovely cars , lovely staff , nothing to much for one,s experience by them ,and I come at least 3times a year for a very long time happy days love the videos, stay safe all
Cheers Tim, great to hear you’ve had a good experience with these companies too 👍 It’s a shame people still get ripped off when there’s better alternatives out there.
Great job Amelia. We can't vouch with any recent hire car experience from Cigar but from say 1999 to 2017, twice a year for a fortnight hire and never any hassle at all. It is wise to video the car on collection and when you drop it off but never any problems. They even sent out two guys because I couldn't loosen the nuts off the wheel to change it for a spare after a puncture. No charge, not even for the puncture repair, (but that may have changed) everything a dream. I have nothing to do with Cigar at all we just found after some of the poor experiences with Hertz in Italy, Cigar and their employees were exceptional time after time. Hope this helps somebody.
Hi again, very informative and I'd already booked with autoriesen for my holiday in November.. not the base model it's the one in the bay next to yours lol
Always hire cars from the airport therefore you have no transfer fees to add. Use Cicars and Pluscars both good experiences, Pluscars slightly cheaper and no queue. Cicars have given me upgraded car every car which is not always best once I had a SUV type which was really thirsty. Pluscars walk onto car park and you are met, do the paperwork there and it’s as simple as that and never had a queue. Last year they weren’t there but a phone call later saw a young Italian lady racing towards us, very apologetic as we weren’t on her list(oops) First time I hired a car was in Corralejo from Cicar office, ordered on line from apartment as it was cheaper. Was told where it was parked up a side street and it was covered in knocks. Went back to the office and was told don’t worry about it as it’s full insurance, I still photographed it. Never had any issues with the cars I’ve had and sometimes I’ve had one for 4 weeks. Would recommend these two companies however due to the car I need this year and the prices I’ve gone with Auto Reisen and I’ve paid for the extra insurance. Great review, great tips and great idea to do a video on car hire which might change others to operate in the same way as these companies.
Great feedback, thanks! I think some of the cars do have a few marks here and there due to the no excess. We always photograph every car and have never had an issue either. Just habit now as we often hire elsewhere in the world where the policies aren’t as generous 👍
I always use Cicar, very straightforward, pleasant staff and good prices. First time we went we used Goldcar and had to pay 1100 Euro deposit in order to get out of paying an additional 240 Euros for fully comprehensive insurance. Needless to say I never used Golcar again.
Yet another great video, agree with comment about Gold Car we renamed them Rusty Car they are a shower. I recommend Autoreisen, experienced a broken door mirror couple years ago when car was parked on last night, no hassle when we returned the car, just sign here on the claim form job done.
I’m amazed Gold Car are still in business given the reviews out there! They seem to get a lot of orders via the airlines. They offer very cheap prices as an add on to a flight but they never tell people the cost of the insurance until they arrive at the desk.
You forgot pluscar. I have rentet there 3 times. Cheap. All Inkluded. And never had Any issuses. Only Thing was i had to Pay 200euro for a mazda cx 5 becours it had some exspensive wheels. But got it back as soon as I gave the car back. The other 2 cars had No deposit. Mini caprio. And a VW beetle caprio.
Hi We have used Interrent and reluctantly Gold (as I have heard the bad reports). However, on the 4 occasions we have used them the cars have been good and we have never had a problem. We take out an annual excess policy for about £34. The car hire is incredibly cheap - last time < 30 euro for a Fiat 500 on a full to full basis for a week. Our favourite spots are the sand dunes outside Corralejo and El Cortillo.
You’ve been very lucky by the sounds of it. The hefty deposit is the thing to be very careful of. They are notorious for finding reasons to make deductions and it can make for a very stressful end to a holiday. I’d rather have zero excess and zero deposit personally.
Brilliant again Amelia, spot on with the information we need, I think a lot more people would hire a car if they realised just how uncomplicated it can be, I certainly would now consider it after watching your video. My only reservation would be if I could keep on the correct side of the road 😎
Very informative video. I use the same company you featured. no problem really friendly people on the desk at the airport definitely will use them again. Thanks for sharing
Used Cigar last time. Whatever company we have used over the years we tend to get a different type given then booked. Not that it was a problem. We love Corralejo. Reasonable priced restaurant near the harbour with good basic local food. Love the fresh fish! Exploring the island on not such a sunny day is easy to do and recommended. We love to come once or twice a year during the winter months. Just made it home in March before everyone went in lockdown in March. Hope your island is still clear of the virus.
Thanks for the info ladies, never done it myself but know people who do and they say its easy enough especially visiting somewhere like Fuerteventura which as you both know is a large sparse island, how quickly do you get used to driving on the wrong side of the road!! thanks.
Coming to the island tomorrow and going to Costa Calma, was thinking of taking the bus but this is a convenient alternative when the process looks so smooth. I will check your account for excursion advice. Is parking generally free on the island?
Thanks a lot my dear, you just saved me at least 150€ . Today after watching your video I made a reservation, after 1 hour got a confirmation. No deposit payments are required for the deductible , no they require cash deposits or guarantee payments by credit card. Sounds to good to be true? Wonder why ? I'll make a video soon about this company.
Great vid, nice to know. I haven't been for 25yrs but visiting in October with cameras for a photo shoot with my partner. What are the rules/laws on hiring a 4x4 (Jeep Wrangler maybe) ? can you go off the beaten track ie: B roads not the main roads for getting some early morning/evening pics? I was advised not to previously as the excess wouldn't cover breakdown, tyre punctures off the main roads? Any advice would be very helpful, thank you.
Maybe good to know, I think only cicar and Cabrera Medina are still from the same company. At least according to some reviews Payless is not very trustworthy at all (see trustpilot) and auto reisen has a couple of bad reviews as of recent 08-2022 and isn’t a part of the same company anymore. At least according to the info I found. I went with Cabrera, thanks for the video, made it easy to narrow it down ✌🏼
Hi ladies, another great vlog informing us about Feurteventura. I've had 2 holidays cancelled by tour operator this year but hopefully will get their in September. I wondered if you had any information around long term rental properties and potential employment there? Perhaps ideas for another vlog for you! I'm no stranger to the island but particularly like the Corralejo and Caleta de Fuste areas. I'd appreciate any information you have. Many thanks Laurie (Laurence) x
Hi Laurie, potential employment is obviously a bit tricky at the moment with everything going on. If you speak Spanish it usually opens up a few more opportunities but generally a lot of jobs are long hours and low pay. Some people come out and start businesses but going self employed here is quite different to the UK. Always best to get professional advice before considering a move, especially as the rules will change in January 2021. Sabrina Williams at Canary Admin Services is very good and she has a website if you need more help
Risco del Paso, leading to Sotavento Beach in Costa Calma about a 40 min drive south from Caleta is our favourite spot for us. It is very photographed and one of the best beaches in the world and easy to see why. Your breath is taken away. Vast stretch of a flat sandy beach with walks along the hills and a mountainous back drop offering amazing views over the area.
Very informative. I've hired many cars around Europe in recent years and the only company to rip me off? Goldcar in Fuerteventura, December 2019. Avoid!!!
Couldn't have put it better! Gold Car will 'sell' you a full tank of fuel at collection so that you can return it empty without any worries. However they charge well above the real cost of the fuel, which is always for a full tank. Who though returns the car with the barest of fuel in the tank, no one wants to run out on the way to the airport. Hence I followed 2 Gold Car drivers in to the filling station right near their office and watched them fill up the next victims cars. Both cars had only about half a tankful put in, but the next hirer will be paying for the WHOLE tank and at a price well above what the cost per litre really was. Having an annual CDW policy is worth it if you intend to hire on more than one occasion. Gold Car practices extend to Sardinia, took us 2 hours to get top the counter there, in order to be overcharged again!
I’m amazed they are still in business with their shady practices but sadly people keep getting stung. I think it’s because they have partnerships with a lot of the low cost airlines and people just add a cheap car to the booking without reading the small print ☹️
Hey Amelia, are these the only ones you recommend or can we find something cheaper? We have been offered c3 citroen for 150 pounds. Do you think it is fair price?
Great information. Just a heads up to all your viewers, never use Goldcar. They are not fit for purpose. Please follow Amelia’s advice for a hassle free car hire experience.
Cheers Simon, amazes me how business they still get with such terrible reviews. Frustrating that they continue to con people when there’s much better alternatives out there 👍
Do you have any advice for anyone who is nervous of driving on the opposite side of the road and has put off hiring a car because of this. Thank you for your videos which are very informative
There’s a website called N332 which summarises all the traffic laws of Spain in English which is handy to read before you come. The roads on the island are not busy so it’s the ideal place to drive on the right for the first time. My main advice would be to assume nobody is going to indicate (so be cautious at roundabouts and junctions) and stick to the speed limit. Most drivers are laid back here and I’ve never seen any road rage so just take it easy, enjoy the view and the locals will overtake if they feel the need. A lot of people are surprised how easy it is to drive here if they’ve not done it before
Good video, is it worth mentioning cofete , we drove there last year whilst staying in Moro Jable, it wasn’t until we arrived in Cofete, that we were informed by another holiday maker that we were not insured to drive to Cofete.
Hi Amelia love the videos, I'm due to arrive in September and was looking at some of the ecersions electric bike and a trip to lanzorte do you have any info on these and which are the good ecersions
Ian Macavoy Yes, very good point. It is on the rental contract but not everyone realises this. Even if you select a 4x4 the insurance doesn’t allow you to go off road
David Zimmerling I haven’t done any electric bike tours but maybe TripAdvisor would be a good place to check reviews. You can buy tickets for the ferry to Lanzarote directly with Armas, Fred Olsen or Lineas Romero. It’s quite cheap as a foot passenger. Some of the excursions provide discounts if you want to visit another attraction like the water park. Otherwise I’d just book direct and do your own thing. You can hire a car for the day on Lanzarote side from the same companies mentioned in this video 👍
Hi Amelia have you got any information on your government about how they feel about the uk saying we have to quarantine for 14 days when back in the uk.We are devastated we had booked for 2 weeks at the start of September now it looks as though this will be cancelled so angry as we would not be able to quarantine when back due to our work situation
Canarian President isn’t happy about it and it seems Madrid aren’t either. They want the Balearics and Canaries excluded based on the data. The problem seems to be the UK locator form not being able to separate the islands from the mainland, so at the moment the UK have no way of tracking arrivals from different areas. This assumes that the UK actually polices this quarantine of course!? There is a lot of noise about this so let’s hope common sense prevails. It’s a terrible decision and potentially disastrous for the local economy here.

Thank you for the video! 😀
Hi again, very informative and I'd already booked with autoriesen for my holiday in November.. not the base model it's the one in the bay next to yours lol
Sounds like a good choice Morgan 👍😀
Guaranteed to get my bald head tanned 😂
Incredibly useful thank you so much
Another great video ladies. Many thanks 👍
Cheers Colin 😀
Always hire cars from the airport therefore you have no transfer fees to add. Use Cicars and Pluscars both good experiences, Pluscars slightly cheaper and no queue. Cicars have given me upgraded car every car which is not always best once I had a SUV type which was really thirsty.
Pluscars walk onto car park and you are met, do the paperwork there and it’s as simple as that and never had a queue. Last year they weren’t there but a phone call later saw a young Italian lady racing towards us, very apologetic as we weren’t on her list(oops)
First time I hired a car was in Corralejo from Cicar office, ordered on line from apartment as it was cheaper.
Heard so many stories of people who have struggled to get that deposit back in full too. Just terrible! Can’t go wrong with Cicar 👍
Thankyou for a clear explanation of hiring a car
Totally agree with NOT using Goldcar. Complete bandits!, we always use Pluscar on all islands. No extra charges at all. They even cover damage
Really helpful video.... Thanks so much for going to the effort of sharing...... without this info we would not have hired !
Thanks guys very helpful x
Thanks for watching Tony 👍
Cheers Mark, amazing how quick you adapt 😀
Very informative video. I use the same company you featured. no problem really friendly people on the desk at the airport definitely will use them again. Thanks for sharing
No problem Paul, thanks for watching 👍
Used Cigar last time. Whatever company we have used over the years we tend to get a different type given then booked. Not that it was a problem. We love Corralejo. Reasonable priced restaurant near the harbour with good basic local food. Love the fresh fish! Exploring the island on not such a sunny day is easy to do and recommended. We love to come once or twice a year during the winter months. Just made it home in March before everyone went in lockdown in March. Hope your island is still clear of the virus.
Thanks Anke, we are still doing very well here 👍 We love going up to Corralejo for some fresh seafood too
Very clear video thank you so much
Thanks for the info ladies, never done it myself but know people who do and they say its easy enough especially visiting somewhere like Fuerteventura which as you both know is a large sparse island, how quickly do you get used to driving on the wrong side of the road!! thanks.
Amazing how quickly you adjust. I’d probably find it very strange driving on the left now 😆
Coming to the island tomorrow and going to Costa Calma, was thinking of taking the bus but this is a convenient alternative when the process looks so smooth. I will check your account for excursion advice. Is parking generally free on the island?
so helpful, thank you
Cheers David 👍
Hello.
Thank you for the wonderful video.
Why didn’t you choose the cabriolet ? ( I am only asking because I want to rent it )
Thanks a lot my dear, you just saved me at least 150€ . Today after watching your video I made a reservation, after 1 hour got a confirmation. No deposit payments are required for the deductible , no they require cash deposits or guarantee payments by credit card. Sounds to good to be true? Wonder why ? I'll make a video soon about this company.
Great video! Thank you for all this info. So you have paid abolutely no deposit to rent this car? Just the 22 euros and that was it?
Thank you for your guidance.
Great video and Thank-you.
What's public transport to from corrolejco (bad sprll) and aurport like?
TIA.
fantastic informative video !!!thanks Amelia
Glad it was helpful Mark 😀
Thanks for this relevant information
Excellent, thanks
Great information 👏👏
Risco del Paso, leading to Sotavento Beach in Costa Calma about a 40 min drive south from Caleta is our favourite spot for us. It is very photographed and one of the best beaches in the world and easy to see why. Your breath is taken away. Vast stretch of a flat sandy beach with walks along the hills and a mountainous back drop offering amazing views over the area.
Couldn’t agree more! Thanks for the suggestion 😀
Goldcar, Europcar, Interrent I also would not recommend at all. Fully agree. With others like Cicar, pluscar, autoreisen no issues in any way so far.
Thanks Christian 👍
Merci pour la video et les bon conseils
Very informative. I've hired many cars around Europe in recent years and the only company to rip me off? Goldcar in Fuerteventura, December 2019. Avoid!!!
Thanks a lot
What do you think about sixt, I have booked with them and am a bit anxious after checking the reviews online
Great info as really should hire a car at some point. Do any of the companies do automatics as I cant see anything on Autoreisen?
Yes they do Wayne, normally at the bottom of the list on Autoreisen when you’re picking the car type you want
Great video Ladies. Always use autiReisin. Never any problems.
Thanks Mary, they’re definitely one of the good ones 👍
Hey Amelia, are these the only ones you recommend or can we find something cheaper? We have been offered c3 citroen for 150 pounds. Do you think it is fair price?
We used cicar. Easy and good Price in our opinion
is a credit card required? whether a deposit is required
hi there. quick question: why do you recommend direct hire? we wanted to book onlike 1-2 months earlier. you think thats a bad idea?
Great video girls we are 10 years x3 three times a year tourists you are fantastic.
First time I went I used goldcar. Never again.
Cicar for life. Absolutely brilliant company.
Great information. Just a heads up to all your viewers, never use Goldcar. They are not fit for purpose.
Please follow Amelia’s advice for a hassle free car hire experience.
Cheers Simon, amazes me how business they still get with such terrible reviews. Frustrating that they continue to con people when there’s much better alternatives out there 👍
Any advice for buying a car in Fv please
What car offices are in Corralejo? Do they only have manual cars?
Cicar certainly have an office in Corralejo. You can select an automatic when you reserve the car 👍
@@AmeliaBolger Thankyou, very helpful
Can you use cash to pay aswell
Any experience with Autos Wendy?
Check it over before you drive away
CICAR are the best. They also have cars adapted for drivers with disabilities.
That's good to know! We agree that Cicar are excellent 👍
Autoreisen is hassle free and have good prices..
I agree, used them so many times now without any issues 👍
Pluscar are also fab.
just be sure avis check your car before you drive off!
