I grew up with a defender 1985. I loved it. My father and I drove it to any climate condition you may imagine. It is a great off road rig, however it is not the most reliable car! the most problematic parts where main leaf springs and drive shafts. We took care of it and it served us well.
Very refreshing to hear someone with you're knowledge and experience speak with such humility , we love the truck and camper . We have a old Cruiser with a roof top and will never go where you have been ,we just camp here in the States thanks for sharing. Take care.
Viva Defender! We just finished our 77000km non stop three continent journey in our Defender. Great vehicle and lots of companions on the road. Happy travels.
It's so nice to hear your explanation on why yours is the "Perfect set up" . There is no arrogants, no lecture, no self importance and no chest pumping You people are a credit to your families, your selves and the countries from which you come. Take care...
Leigh, I 100% agree with the Defender family, the community you get with these trucks is like no other. Easy to fix and no technical electrics and sensors. I also love the Defender wave! ✋🏻
Thanks for the information, I drive a Series 3 1977 88 inch, drove it across Australia in 2015 from QLD to Margaret River in the South West then back to QLD in 2017. Go the Land Rover.
Thanks. I'm building up a Defender for next trip. Hadn't really thought the detachable through but am getting too old for roof tents. Brilliant work guys.
Awesome to see the very happy healthy smiles together at the end of the video. I hope you 2 stay safe and healthy. With all of the places you have been your immune system is probably in an off road rig ready for action. I grew up seeing and camping in slide-in campers they are great. I have traveled and camped out in a variety of vehicles and tents, my old 79 blazer with a homemade tent setup was one of the best for getting places and still having a dry place to sleep no matter the weather. I traveled Northeast USA and Canada with a girl friend in a ford escort 4 door wagon. It was an inexpensive way to go and we got back into some great places. The perfect rig is the one that gets you out there so you can enjoy nature and find out what else you would like to try someday. Please stay safe, take good care of your "little frenchie" and have fun.
Thanks so much for that comment. You are absolutely right, it's getting out and having fun that's important. I lived out of the back of a little Citroen Xantia for 2 years travelling Europe 15 years ago. I had a mattress and sleeping bag in the back and that's it. Some of the best memories 😉
Great video Legh. Very informative. In particularly as to why this set up is perfect for u and Stef. Its given me a lot to think about, as I convert my set up from travelling Oz for 7 yrs, to contemplating world travels.
Nicely done Leigh! You do know that there is an old Australian axiom that goes something like this: If you intend to venture into the Australian bush, you need a Land Rover. If you ever intend to return, you need a Toyota. :))
Land Rover turning drivers into mechanics since 1948 👍 I’m a Landcruiser guy myself but I do love the notion of, and look of, the Defenders and the passion of the owners. We dont have that big family feel so much in Landcruiser land. I’d probably ship my Landcruiser 100 over but wondering if you’ve observed the availability of unleaded and the prices in your travels?
Hey Thanks for the comment, you are right about the Land Cruiser family not being as tight as the Land Rover community. I was ten years in an 80 Series and never once got a wave or thought about waving to another Toyota driver. In the end the cars not important as long as we are getting out there :-) Unleaded is available everywhere you will have no problem, diesel is the only fuel that can be sometimes hard to come by.
I 100% Agree with you! The choice of vehicle comes down to what you want from it and your own personal likes/dislikes. I fully understand the Landrover thing (a number of my friends have been bitten by the bug!) and they certainly are an iconic vehicle. As you said you can overland in any vehicle or even on foot! Anyway loving the videos.... Keep safe and well.
This is perfect timing as I have purchased and modifying my vehicle for adventure travels. You made a lot of great points about why you went the direction you did.
I stumbled across this video and I can only say WOW. What a great journey you are on. Life is just that, a journey. The path in which you travel that journey should be rewarding and exciting. You meet that. Safe travels and you now have a new subscriber. Cheers
To be honest, I never really paid any attention to the category of these popup pickup cabins until seeing your channel. And I have to admit that it does sound like a good compromise between offroad capabilities, living space, ship'ability and a relatively small footprint. We're currently in South America with a car of similar weight and size (except for height) as yours and even though I thought a lot of Unimogs (the interesting 435 version can these days be had for relatively cheap in perfect condition from the German fire brigades, as they're sold after 30 years of service...!) I'm now super happy that we didn't go that route. So many bridges are either too narrow or have weight restrictions. They are undoubtedly super capable in open terrain and feel a bit "safer" in general maybe. But for a trip around the world and the needed flexibility, a smaller car is a great choice. We're super happy with our drive at the moment but I'll certainly look into the popup pick up category for a possible next car for sure! Thank you, you two!
I think your experience shows in your choice of vehicle setup. For what you are doing it’s perfect. I look forward to many more of your wonderful videos.
Mate, perfection in your commentary. I’ve been driving Landies since 1971, and yes , they aren’t for everyone but I love them. They are a Meccano set on steroids. Lol.
I've traveled in a defender. Yes massive friendly community. Fortunately easy to work on. Dream vehicle Aussie Land cruiser Ute. And that pic of one broken, some sort of wild unimaginable conspiracy.hee hee. All the best
Thank you for all the technical videos Leigh. I was brought up with travel and my goal one day is to travel the word too. Thank you for these inspiring videos!
gday guy. love ya stuff. me and the misses have built our defender 110 cut into a duel cab and you've inspired us to over land. keep up the good work. cheers
Really great video . You hit on all the reasons that your rig made it the best fit for you two . So many people get stuck not planing it out just jumping in and then oh no Now I can’t go we’re I want to go . Having watched your set up Im rethinking about my own future set up for traveling over seas . With out a trailer . Thanks for your input and thanks for sharing your life and videos with us all . Very great video much appreciate . .. from Steve stott in sutherlin Oregon u.s.a.
I believe you have helped me chose between a rooftop tent versus a camper!!!! I have several Defenders and two 130’s and one will be built out this year. I am definitely going to go with a camper. Especially after spending some of the worst nights in my life in a tent climbing Kilimanjaro. Don’t think I will ever get comfortable in a tent again!!! Cheers. Great video.
Excellent choice and whattan beautiful rig - absolutely logical choices and i can see why it is perfect for Your guys - Thanks for sharing - Many Happy adventures! Cheers! DW
11:20 - I saw the first view and instantly knew its the way to Trsa in Montenegro, where you have to turn left inside the mountain. Followed by such a incredible climb. Our "Five Mountains" rolling festival used this route last year and people were not disappointed. Thanks for sharing you thoughts. Highly appreciate it.
G'day gentlemen, great to hear from you both! Good memories from my brief time working with you both. Hope things are ok over there during these crazy times?
Really nice to hear your motivations for your choice of vehicle. Currently I'm preparing my all original 1964 Unimog with a canvas top for a trip to Iceland. Really love seeing your adventures, can't wait to start mine.
Defender for life......we love our Land Rovers as well....We are current working with Alu Innovations for our roof conversion on Boeing...Defender 110 SW Td5. Cant wait to just go overlanding in our Landy....Our Next trip is 24 April 2020 to the Second Series Festival.
Can't wait to see the pictures of the conversion, Boeing will be the perfect vehicle. Mate we think of you every time we see a light house now 😜 Plenty of them for you to visit here in Japan 😉

Actually yes we did consider this. This was such a breath of fresh air and completely spot on!! There is no one perfect set up and other channels that create videos about "THE ULTIMATE" rigs or pieces of gear, or tools, or tires, or whatever are all just clickbait and the lowest form of content there is because as you've already said, it's all a personal choice and what's best for you won't necessarily be the best or someone else. You guys are awesome, thanks so much for sharing your journey. If you're ever in NYC let me know, I'll take you guys to the Gunks (my local-ish crag) or we can boulder in Central Park : )
Thank you so much for the comment 😊 We'd love to return to New York some day. We travelled there about 5 years ago and we did climb the Gunks and we also bouldered in Central Park 😁
I totally agree with the choice of the 4w camper when traveling around the world. I put min thow on a toyota tacoma and drove frome San Francisco to Buenos Aires. I did not have a singel accident or damage on the hole 33k km tour. So i`l go for a Toyota again ( hm, maybe a tundra). But then i`m not in a LR familiy - i see that. Take care - love your vlogs. Traveling Australia for two years.... that must have been awesome to watch. ¡Can´t even imagine! T.O.D.U Garfield approves this Monday video!!. Do not disturb our little frenchy friend, that is mucho muy important.
Hi Leigh, fully understand your points. We got a Unimog now for 15 years and yes, sometimes the rig is too big. For a family of four and a dog it was still a very good choice, brought us to scandinavia, Iceland and Tunesia and many small trips around Europe. Now with the kids being adults and out of the house, I consider building a smaller pop-up-cabin (max height 2,8 m) to allow even more offroad capability. Thanks for your thoughts and keep up making such nice vids!
@@leighdearle5965 Sure, I have seen Unidan and some of their vehicles, they are looking good. Nevertheless I prefer buidling my own, at least the living box. It is not soo difficult, esp if you keep things simple and functional. I have built my first camperbox within a few weeks 15 years ago, now I am sketching plans for a second box and hope to start building it within the next 2-3 years - well, I have also an older farmhouse, which needs some TLC first...
I enjoy watching ye guys travelling the world 👍 the footage is amazing and the fact ye cover culture, food and interact with the locals ye are giving a real insight into life in all corners of the world. P.S following ye from the start I Bought a 130 2008 and painted the roof black also good choice Lee 👍

Great channel. Love Defenders but as they are discontinued now & therefore extremely expensive cult vehicles, I think they are destined to slowly disappear and become history (sadly). You guys spend a lot of time repairing, fixing, and maintaining that Landy!. How do you cope with that? It would drive me absolutely crazy! Anyway, thanks for sharing your awesome experiences. Stay safe & sound guys! Happy new year!
Hello GrizzlyNbear, We are Spiritual Travellers, we are from India, happen to see your channel and we must say, we both love you guys, you guys are real inspiration for us, trying to watch all your videos even if it would take the entire day, so be it. We are very raw on UA-cam, just a month old, we have a different lifestyle in India and several family boundations, but you really inspire us to live the life we both always wish. Good luck to you guys and prayers goes out for you both to be safe and sound, You've got two members added to your family :)
Really fascinating. Your lives are totally different from mine. I'm English, live in the UK and though I've travelled extensively over much of the world I've never done anything like your overlanding adventures. I have owned a Land rover Defender 90, Disco and Range Rovers at times and completely understand your love of the Land Rover community. One area I have camped is Patagonia in Argentina and Chile, it's absolutely stunning and I hope you have Latin America among your future plans. Meanwhile I love your videos.
I really hate to admit it, but I think your overland rig setup is simply more practical than my own 4x4 T1N Sprinter. I've yet to take it through Central Asia yet, but hope I can get down some of those roads in the high top.
Great video! Agree it's the perfect overland setup! Loved it, would be amazing if you guys can do an interior review of the camper and it's features. Again, really cool video! Can't wait to see more of your adventures.
Thanks mate, Steph did do a video on the camper a while back but for sure we could do a more detailed overview 😉 Hope things are ok for you and the family mate?

79 Series for me, but i've got to say the Defender is THE iconic overlander. Nothing has the character of a Landy!

I like the idea of having the truck and living space separate, I'll have to consider that!
Meanwhile I love your videos.
a very informative video thank you guys and good luck
Great video to start the week.
Thanks mate, Steph did do a video on the camper a while back but for sure we could do a more detailed overview 😉
Hope things are ok for you and the family mate?
Leigh Dearle thanks brother! We are great and safe. Hope you guys stay safe too and not too bored, hehe 😅
Great video keep up the good work......
When you get tired of traveling you have to start selling campers! You are the best.
Great video as ever & obviously Defenders rule lol !!
You Guys nailed it :)
Very interesting and useful video.
Great job mate thank you take care.
