Me too I'm so in love
Kittens are cool, but senior kitties are amazing, they’re so mellow, loving and snuggly. When you’re looking for a pet, please check out your local shelter for an older cat. they have so much love to give !
Yes! I work at a shelter and we have horribly behaved kittens go while extremely sweet seniors are barely looked at.
And then you get cats like my 13 year old lady who still tears around like a maniac, does sneak attacks on my feet and ankles, and loves hanging out on top of my bookcases and fridge...we were at the vet recently and I had to laugh before answering whether she's showing any signs of stiffness or mobility problems. She has calmed down a bit over the years, but mellow is not a word that anyone would use to describe her!
Same here! I work at a humane society and everyone comes in asking where the kittens (and puppies) are, and how they are around children, other dogs, cats, etc. My response-Ummm they’ve been on this earth 8 weeks so ?????, but there’s some awesome adults who are just as beautiful and have the personality to match!”
@@peyton713 It's heartbreaking to lose a senior cat only a few years after connecting with it. It may also be more expensive and even stubborn. Regardless, my little buddy is 19 years old, and not doing to well :(
I may adopt another senior cat. I may not have grown with him like my Pepe aka Pepito the Catito but I hope to spoil them and provide them a decent living!
My senior cat is so good and chill and all he does is eat, cuddle, and sleep, but my boyfriends younger cat is so bad omg she is such a little witch
Please don't ever change your format! I love the fact that you don't use music, and it's just you and the pet, with your soft calming voice. It's absolutely fantastic, and I connect so much more to it than with other vet channel's videos.
I don't even own a cat. But taking lessons for the day that I do adopt.
your voice is asmr
oh and, mr. pirate is adorable as usual.
Thank you, thank you :-).
@@HelpfulVancouverVet I've always had a weakness for cats. I agree with dizzy fingers, Mr. Pirate is a handsome cat. He didn't mind that you touched him while he ate, which isn't a guaranteed reaction with all cats.
Mr pirate is such a star.
Our cat's still young, but I love having a tutorial for her future. And I absolutely adore seeing Mr. Pirate, who I hope gets another 20 years at least, if not immortality.

I've noticed how my older kitty loves it when I hold his drink plate up for him! He waits for me to do it, although he can drink when the plate is at the ground level too. I rescued him from the local park where he had been abandoned and it's been a love story since then.
mr. pirate is sooo well behaved! You took his dish and he didn't even complain!!
I found that as my cat approached the 18 year mark, petting him and talking sweet to him while he ate encouraged him to eat more. Miss my sweet baby so much, he lived to 20 yrs.
I love how he is so sweet and sincere with the cats in the videos. He must be a kind vet.
When I was a kid we had an castrated male Cat and he died when he was 23 years old, he was lying on the couch and fell Into The Big Sleep, a Gray house cat the Nices cat I have ever had. This happens over 40 years ago and I am still Missing him.
I have such a soft spot for old kitties. So special.
Oh my goodness, I never thought of this!! 🥺 What a brilliant tip, and I did this immediately. My Annie is 21 and counting... anything that I can do to make her quality of life better is what I am doing. Thank you so much for making these awesome and educational videos. 😻
Wow, way to go!
I've had senior cats in my family when I was younger, but now I have a 15 year old who has arthritis and I never even thought about elevating his food bowl. Great tip, thank you!
Thank you for these tips for our older cats. I want to do anything I can to help them live longer and be more comfortable. My female Siamese mix lived 30 years, my Maine Coon soulmate, he lived 27 years. I wish I knew then to elevate the bowl for them. Cats are all unique and precious. I've been fortunate to have cats most of my life. I appreciate deeply your gentleness and compassion for felines.
My cat has never liked eating out of a raised food bowl. Your advice to give different flavors of cat food is totally true. My Catarina has repeatedly gotten where she will not eat a food flavor I regularly give her. This last time, I finally got her three different flavors and she is eating very well. I also rotate the flavors.
Food aversion is often a sign of underlying problems in cat linked to nausea. We think that a cat east a food, feels nauseous (for some reason unrelated to the food i.e. kidney disease) and develops aversion to that food.
Great advice! Our 21-year-old cat eats more when we give her less at a time, so she typically eats 4 smaller meals a day, and our other 3 cats eat twice a day. After we transitioned to feeding her 4x, it really didn't take long for her weight to get back up in the normal range. Our 13-year-old has to have an elevated bowl as well, and it has to be shallow. She won't eat out of a normal bowl. She's always had sensitivity where her whiskers are concerned, and that seems to be worse as she gets older, but it's a simple enough thing to work around.
I'd watch an entire video of Mr. Pirate getting pets while eating. He is such a good boyyy
Mr P. is such a handsome fellow!!
Today I learned Mr. Pirate also goes by Mr. P ❤️
My cat is 16 now. She has kidney disease. She seems to be stable now, healthy and happy. But very old. I am enjoying taking care of her. She needs a lot of attention and affection. She won't leave my bedroom now. She sleeps under my bed all day until I come home, She just wants me to softly pet and groom her, and to cuddle. I love your videos--I have learned a lot and enjoy your sweet manner. Thank you!
It is just like he is talking to the cat 😂, just beatiful !!
Dr. Uri has such a calming voice and presence, it's no wonder Mr. Pirate loves to be around him 🥰
My Pickle has arthritis in both her elbows and although she definitely doesn't have a problem with eating (she's such a greedy kitty), I will still try this to make it more comfortable for her, thanks! :)
Everytime I see Mr. Pirate in the thumbnail I can't help but yell *Pirateeeyyy*
Such a handsome cat!!
I would believe anything this guy says.
Elevating the food is a fantastic tip. We've got a 16yo boy with hyperthyroidism and it's been really tricky to get him to gain weight but lifting his food has helped a lot. Thanks Doc!
Thank you for this. You are a good man, and it's when our cats are near death that they need us to be informed and competent to care for them the most.
That was very helpful. Thanks, Doc.
We adopted our cats from another owner when they were about 7 and 10 years old. They are now about 12 and 15. Other than more expensive health bills, they have been the joy of our lives in retirement.
agreed
Mr pirate: "MONCH MONCH MONCH MONCH"
"You can use anything at all to elevate the food dish.." Mr. Pirate: "Your shoulder please"
mr. pirate is so cute 💖💖 it’s my goal to adopt an older cat in the future 😊
I love Mr Pirate, he's so sweet.
He looks like a sweet old guy! I love the coloring on him. He's a handsome boy! I love older animals and they have so much character. I know an older cat of my friend's. she's around 14 and is still a sweet old girl. This is an awesome trick. I never would have thought about this. I'll tell my friend about this one.
I just elevated my cats food and water. Reggie is18 showing signs of arthritis in his hips. Still looks healthy
IM SO THANKFUL FOR ALL YOUR TIPS. 🙏🏼🐈😽so is Reggie 👍
After seeing Mr Pirate as a shoulder Cat, I wanted to train 2 of our cats to be comfortable being carried that way so I can carry them at the same time.
Your voice and Mr pirate, make me want to move to Vancouver and have many cats
Mr. Pirate is a beautiful and chubby old kitty! We took our cat to the vet for the first time today since adopting him a few months ago, and he got a clean bill of health! Thank you so much for making delightful and informative videos. I knew nothing about cats until adopting my kitty this summer, and I'm grateful to have such a good resource to keep him healthy and happy for years to come!
When I see a video featuring Mr. Pirate, I can't wait to watch ! 😻😻 Simply adorable.
Mr. Pirate is so cute!
What a sweet old man. Please tell him I said hi!
Amazing! I've always fed my cats wet and dry, w a bowl of fresh water. They have the choice. The dry is nibbled on through the day, until I come home from work to give a can of wet food, They know its dinner time. Dish height is a great tip! Thank you for sharing this video. 😄💖🐾😻🐱
My female cat is almost 18 and she still loves her dry Purina Cat Chow. Also she can drink from a bathtub faucet which is continuously dripping. She also drinks from the kitchen faucet which I turn on when I'm here. Judging from the leavings in the litter box she is very well hydrated. She has no weight problem and never has.
I used to do it with my old cats, happy to know my intuition was right. Thanks for the video
This is so pure
Dr. Uri
Thank you....
Your videos are providing exceptional supplemental services.
Of course, your videos are not a replacement, to which, it is our own personal responsibility we should take our loved ones to our locally trusting veterinarian as well
:)
every cat deserves an owner like you. ;)
I like that you are in our team,
Cat lovers😀
I like them too Dr.👏👍
Hey! What type of cat is Mr. Pirate? :3 He's cute, nice vids too
Thank you! He is a shoulder cat! Also a Mackerel Tabby. Also a very good cat.
The vet is cute too! 😊
Mr Pirate will reach absolute immortal unit level pretty soon :)
Extremely helpful tips Dr. Burstyn! I do quite appreciate it. Especially about the facts of wet vs dry food and the elevated food bowl trick is a great tip. Mr. Pirate is a wonderful cat too! THANKS!
Thank you for making these videos. Rusty (my Cat) and I thank you. I have watched everyone, some more than once. Raising the food dish is such a great idea and important to make it easier for him now and down the road as he gets older. Thanks again.
Cheers
Bill
my cats had to have at least 8 teeth removed each, so they have a lot of difficulty with chewing kibble. We feed them wet food every day now, and they're both 11 years old so i'm glad they're getting that extra hydration as well.
Cute little Pirate !
1:40 he was gonna go for the cutesy baby talk LOL so cute
I love the Squish That Cat merch!
I love you Mr Pirate!
Thank you for such great info. I'm very reassured now I can see we're doing good and kind things for our 17 yr old cancer survivor. It's amazing what a help setting the dish up high for her.
❤you mr. pirates!!
Mr Pirate is a sweetie I love him. Very helpful videos!! My kitty is 9 now this will be useful... also, greetings from Ontario!
I’m a cat mommy. This videos are SO helpful! Thank you!!
Great tips - thanks.
Love Mr Pirate - what an adorable cat. He reminds me of my sadly departed blotched tabby with similar white markings. Mr P is lucky to have such a caring owner, who he is clearly devoted to.
Yay Mr Pirate! :)
He's a lovely cat. Please tell him so from me (I think cats are pretty good at picking up what we're feeling when we talk to them, so saying nice things (or anything lovingly) is makes them happy I think).
Good to know about the height of the bowl. Wouldn't want it to be uncomfortable for a kitty, and could be hard to know, since they might well not show any reluctance, since they might like to eat the food, while find it uncomfortable.
I’m a simple man. I see Mr. Pirate, and I click.
Thank you!!
You’re voice is like velvet 😺
Thank you so much for this series! The textbook trick never would have occurred to me. Also Mr. Pirate should be sculpted in bronze and placed somewhere as a tourist destination. Proceeds go to the clinic.
I have always had senior cats but I'm about to have more than one for the first time- adding a 15-year-old friend for my 12-year-old this week. I know moving homes is very stressful for older cats as it is- is there anything special one can do to help them adjust?
My cats are not quite seniors yet - they are 8 and 10 years old - but this is so helpful to consider for the future so that they can be as happy and comfortable as possible!
I hope your channel will be the best vet channel on UA-cam. Good luck!
I actually add water to wet food for my cats. 1/3 water or sometimes as much as 50/50 water. Having a cat fountain also helps because some cats are attracted to the sound and visual of running water.
my oldest cat is 15 years old and, although I was already doing most of the things mentioned in this video (and the previous one), it's really helpful! thank you :)
I'm going to send this to a few of my friends who have older cats too :)
Mr Pirate is awesome.
Looking forward to seeing the last instalment as well as any of the videos you took from your trip.
you are an animal whisperer
Mr. Pirate, what a beautiful boy ~
Also with neutered male cats wet food can help guard against UTI. Mr. Pirate looking handsome as usual.
So I watched this when it came out and my cat who turned 10 this fall who has always been food motivated but eating less lately has gone back to eating his whole bowl again!! It still takes longer than it used to to finish the bowl after I added an amazon box under my cats food bowl, thank you so much for this tip!!
SQUISH THAT CAT!!!
Hi from snowy, freezing Poland! I use for my baby (12 yo cat) a small shoes box, covered with plastic table cloth as his table. I know the same should do dog's keepers (come on, let our 'princesses' get some civilisation! :) Thanks to the 'table' my old cat stopped vomiting, which was his every day rutine and vet in here had no clue how to fix it. Also, I have 5 extra ceramic plates for my cat's wet meat food, so I don't have to wash the dish after every meal. However, after about 2-3 years the plates must be thrown away because they get funny smell and cat don't want to eat fresh food from smelly plates. Well, I wouldn't eat either!:)
My sweet older kitty was having some eating problems, so we started feeding him at a higher level and hand feeding him a little bit and it helped a lot! We took him to the vet and it turned out his problem was a bad tooth and not arthritis, but he does prefer the elevated eating station, so thank you for the tip!
(He's had his bad tooth removed so that's fine now)
i really like your videos! thank you for making them :D
i can really feel the love you have for your pets :)
Very informative, I never knew about elevating the dish and wet/vs dry food calories, great videos!
I hear a lot of people saying they won’t adopt an older cat because it “hasn’t grown up with them”, but that makes no sense to me- if they’re at the shelter they obviously can’t be with the family they “grew up” with and need loving homes. Besides you don’t have to potty train them and they have personalities of their own, I love my Bandit and with how naughty she can be (hence the name) I probably couldn’t handle her as a kitten 😂 plus elders are way more cuddly
Thank you again! Looking forward to part 3 🐱❤️
Another super helpful video, thank you! ♥😺
look how quickly your channel has grown! Keep it up! Love you, love your cats, and your content. Youre unique, i wish you earn some good money on yt soon.
Wonderful series
Cant wait for part 3!
My mom doing like this for our big dog.He is 12 year all. This trik is realy working
incredibly useful, thank you for sharing your knowlege sir!
Our vet recommended wet food only for one of our male cats. He suffered crystals in his urine and got blocked a 2nd time with a MASSIVE one. He was on a "UTI health kibble", it wasn't prescription though which was our mistake. He just had PU surgery, which probably would have been avoidable had we kept him on wet food. I guess some cats are just more prone to them than others though because I have had exclusively male cats growing up and none of them ever got blocked. We switched our younger male cat to an exclusive wet food diet, and we mix a little water into it so they can stay hydrated.
Thank you once again for such an informative video. My cat is still young, however it is good to know how to care for her has she ages. Love Mr pirate :) Looking forward to part 3
Thank you so much for your videos and advices ... so helpfull
One of our cats is 12 and while I've noticed for the past few years she sometimes prefers to lay down eating, but mostly drinking, I had just assumed she was being lazy. It would have never occurred to me before I found your channel that it might be due to discomfort, but it makes sense now, especially considering she sometimes has trouble getting up and down on things. I will try your suggestion, thank you.
Thank you for making this video! I have a 10 year old cat and this will help her tremendously
Thank you.
Thank you
