I love fire bellied toads. I used to have them years ago, back when they were popular. One of my friends accidentally ended up with a bioactive enclosure for fire bellied toads, anoles, and a couple species of newt. He put a live plant in there, and some small insects that came in with crickets burrowed into the substrate. The plant grew into a dense miniature jungle, and the tiny creatures in the substrate have helped keep it clean. A filter was still necessary for the water area. The last time I visited him, just a few years ago (I don't live in the same area anymore), it was still going strong.

Good question. I do remember seeing a lot of rat snakes and fire belly roads as a kid(in the 90s). I'd also say there were more Chinese water dragons. And although they're still somewhat popular, California kingsnakes were just as popular as corn snakes in my area(California). I think people realized that despite us being told they were very docile, they were responsible for many of our first reptile bites lol. That being said, the largest California king on record was caught a few days ago - 7ft feet with a fairly large girth.

FINALLY a UA-camr talking about Russian Ratsnakes. I think they are severely underrated, and not just for the reasons you mentioned. Russian rat snakes are known to be extremely intelligent, curious, and interactive pets, moreso than any other snake species I've encountered. Obviously I'd never say that any type of snake "enjoys" handling, but they certainly seem to seek out opportunities for exploration and novelty, and can come to recognize interaction with their owners as a source of those things, They are completely fearless around humans and Ive never known one to be defensive. Plus they are probably one of the hardiest snakes in the world; when we're talking about a species that brumates at subzero temperatures, you know it's got to be easy to keep them alive. Just in general, they aren't just fascinating animals, they are specifically fantastic pets, possibly the friendliest pet snake you can get, and they desperately deserve more attention. I honestly don't understand why every snake owner doesn't have one.

I think the problem with most snakes is the presence of Ball Pythons. They just check to many boxes: medium size, easy to handle, easy to find and literally more morphs than anything else. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it does mean that they overshadow pretty much ever other snake.

    • @nerodia

I've been looking for fire bellied toads for a year now. Finally got 2 from Josh's frogs at the Anaheim reptile expo. I bought them for 50 each, I remember when they used to sell for like 8 dollars. But for 1 I know they only sell captive bred which is way more ethical, and 2 im just super desperate at this point lol. I love these little guys and I haven't found them anywhere near me

    • @halofornoobs93

I love the quality of Josh's frogs, but I found they tend to overprice their animals quite a lot. They are usually one of the most expensive tables at the Reptile Shows I go to. Their Cave geckos are like 2-3 times the price of other captive bred ones. That said, they are great for finding obscure species in the hobby.

I really can't talk enough about my musk turtle they live 40 to 60 years they require the absolute minimum and I mean MINIMUM care... so even if you are a very VERY neglectful beginner your musk turtle will not die. They get four to six inches, mine does not like coming out of the water but they are surprisingly good climbers (before I added the plants and other enrichment he would divebomb for fun from his basking area) the males are much smaller than the females and unlike other breeds of turtles the males actually have longer tails!
I actually did a bioactive tank for my musk turtle and it really perked up his energy. I have ghost shrimp and neocardita (cherry shrimp) in with him (he doesn't eat them if anything they ride on him to groom him!) I put in natural plants and snails and daphnia as well as some other small invertebrates like scuds in order to create an entire ecosystem that will eat his poop. I have plants as well and an LED (a word if the wise is to get plants that can be uprooted pretty easily and still thrive just because turtles will dig up your plants!). I've managed to really reduce the amount of waste production by having a custom built plant filter that I'm still working on where I only really need to top off the water and clean the glass.
I've had him 9 years and he's fantastic!
I've also considered doing aquaponics with turtles because nothing produces more waste than a freaking turtle... and everybody loves turtles and if they don't then you should probably stay away from that person.

I had a gopher snake from my mid teens through my mid twenties. He was wild caught by me to save his life. I should have released him in a safe place, but I was young and he was absolutely docile and seemed content to be handled from the first time I picked him up so I kept him. I definitely did a lot of things wrong, but there wasn't any internet at that time. I read what I could find and more or less figured that since he was native to the area, providing conditions similar to that with water and a mouse every week or two would do ok. It apparently did. He stayed healthy for like 12 years.

I'm actually happy about that. Most stores were irresponsible and didnt inform people that if you get a male it will quickly become a monster that can rip your fingers off and most were farmed or wild caught. If you really want a green iguana spend the money on a captive bread one and keep in mind that sexually mature males can still be absolute monsters even if they come from the best breeders. I had 3 as a kid , one got real mean real fast we gave it to my dads friend , one got sick and died almost immediately and the 3rd I had quite a while he got really big and was mostly friendly but would go absolutely ballistic out of nowhere. Itd attack our cats n shit. Our power went out for 3 days during a bad winter storm , he got sick and didnt pull through.

You were right about the forgotten part. Fire belly toads completely slipped my mind. I also kinda figured that you would have had the chuckwalla on the list

Bull snakes rock. I had 3 growing up. Very vocal but sweeties and never struck (except a bit when very young and learning).

Garter snakes are also in the underrated because you can keep many together and don't need to feed rodents, they're active, and they're super funny. Aside from the issue with Natracines, they're basically perfect.

Thanks for the Baird's Rat Snake shout out. They fell out of popularity because people got morph crazy is my opinion a lot of what drives what's popular is what people think they can make money from. I do see them at every other reptile show so clearly there is still people getting them.

My first pet other than cats was a fire bellied newt. One time it escaped and made its way downstairs only for my mom to find him playing in her mop water on the floor of our kitchen. I was like 16-17 at the time.

I grew up seeing fire bellied toads everywhere. Then they kinda disappeared. Haven’t seen one in a while. Chinese water dragons were super common when I was younger. I’m honestly glad they aren’t anymore. Simply for their difficulty of care. I’d rather them be available but difficult to find as they appear to be now. That way the people who can keep them can get to em. But they’re less likely to be an impulse. I feel like long tailed grass lizards were pretty popular up until a couple years ago. Honestly I’ve been contemplating getting one. I bet I could still find them though

Musk turtle, mine is wild to captive. Had a crawfish boil at work and she was in one of the bags. Brought her home and it took almost 3 months to figure out exactly what she was because there was so little information about them and how to identify exactly what species of musk turtle she was. Now she's just a cubby little grump.

I was shocked when I was looking into fire bellied toads recently to see that they weren't readily available the 2 places that I could find them they were £30 each. My first ever fully planted bioactive setup was with them and they were just under £6 each, mind you that was 20+ years ago, but still a shocking price/ availability change.

I love that fire belly toads were mentioned here! They were my first exotic pets and were a huge reason i fell in love with reptiles/amphibians (my child brain didn’t see a difference lol) at such a young age. I’m not sure how popular they were at the time but my first actual reptile was a Russian tortoise, i don’t see them in the hobby a lot

I got a beardie when my 4 year old asked Santa for a dinosaur. Been watching your videos religiously since Adam. You've been a huge help me and my son thank you.
