Amazon UV Safety Glasses - Massive Fail

  • I got these "Upgraded UV Glasses for UV Light Protection CE OD4+" for free as part of the Amazon Vine program. I was shocked to find that they don't remotely do the one thing they are supposed do, block UV light.
TL;DR: Don't buy no name safety gear - you can't trust it.
Check out the quick test I did that shows a UV flashlight shines right through the fake UV safety glasses, but ordinary prescription glasses block the UV light .
All prescription glasses and even non-prescription sunglasses in the US are required to block a minimum amount of UV light - the clear 3M splash goggles I'm wearing also block UV light, too - but you don't notice because the coatings that block invisible light are also invisible. The amber color of the fake UV safety glasses makes them look protective, but the color only filters out some visible light, not invisible UV light.
Amazon sells many quality products, but they do not and cannot vet every product that is sold. It's possible I got the only defective pair of UV safety glasses from this company and all the others are perfect. But who knows? And that's the problem. You don't.
These fake safety glasses are dangerous. People will risk compensate, exposing themselves to UV light thinking they are protected, when they are not.
If you need UV safety glasses, buy from a reputable maker of safety equipment that you can trust to meet the safety standards they claim.
I'm not linking to the product because I want to make a general point about personal protective equipment that applies to masks, safety goggles, fall arrest harnesses and much more, which is that with many safety products you can't tell if the equipment will protect you by just looking at it. You are *trusting* that it is engineered and properly manufactured to do what it is supposed to do, whether that is to filter out invisible contaminants from the the air you breathe, block harmful invisible light, or protect you from hitting the ground if you fall.
But when you buy gear from a company that you've never heard of on Amazon making big claims about meeting all sorts of safety standards, you don't have any good reason to trust them. Thinking "Well, Amazon wouldn't let them sell it if didn't work" is not an accurate assumption to make. These fake safety glasses are still for sale on Amazon as of this posting, and feature many glowing reviews by people who think they are being protected but apparently don't realize they have no idea whether the glasses actually block harmful invisible light.
Nobody should vouch for properties of a product in a review that they can't verify, such as how protective a safety product is. By all means, say the things you like about the product, the price, the way it fits, the appearance, the packaging. But don't make claims about efficacy unless you have a way to test the claims and have done so.

I tested at least 10 different safety glasses clear version including 3M w UV flashlight all fail on Amazon including the ones I bought from Home Depot HDX and Milwaukee. I base tested against another safety clear goggle I bought a long time ago so proves that the UV flashlight works.
