Mechanical Resonance never left my cassette deck the entire summer of 1987. Been a huge fan since, and have seen the band play live over several decades in several different states.

@@BigTimeRushFan2112 Me too. Saw them with Great White in 1989, I think 1994, early 2000's (can't remember) and 2011 in a small venue that only held 3,000 people and that one rocked.
The Great Radio Controversy is one of my favourite albums from that era/genre.

I'd have to strongly disagree with the word "fall". They've released 7 great albums since 2000(where you've ended the video). They are still touring and kicking a$$, going on 44 years now! One of the greatest of all time!

@@Bizarreparade , Just to update my original comment... They've actually released 18 albums since 2000 if you consider the live and compilation stuff. 4 of the 7 studio albums(since 2000) charted in top 30 and 1 in the top 100.

I was a HUMONGOUS TESLA FAN! I listened to them daily,all through my High-school years! Went to see em for the first time when they were opening up for David-Lee Roth after he left VH! They sounded just as awesome Live,as they did on tape back then! I still listen to all their tracks on my I-tunes to this day! Awesome group!

Back in the day when you could google "Tesla" and the band wasn't buried in pages of throw-away cars. Their acoustic version of "paradise" was amazing.
Their name alone did more for the recognition of the genius of Nikola Tesla than 12 years of public school education. Tesla discovered how to tap free electricity ala ancient Egypt, and Edison figured out how to make everyone pay a light bill. Big difference that we still have through pure greed. JP Morgan screwed him big time.
There is some real truth to this statement.
Tesla was never trying to make free energy, he was trying to make money. His plan was to sell the energy to customers. His free energy was no different than a wind farm.
When my kid was in school, we met her 7th or 8th grade science teacher and I looked on the wall and there was a picture of Edison. I asked the teacher why wasn't Nikola Tesla on her was when they were fine to put up that charlatan named Edison. Just got a blank stare.

I too saw Tesla with Def Leppard. Both bands definitely surpassed what I thought I was going to see. I initially thought both bands were too bubblegum. But really enjoyed seeing they were both good musicians that could jam too. I really liked the rotating stage set up in the middle of the arena. That I thought was the best way to see the whole band at differing ares with the stage rotating. It made it so much more enjoyable.
I’ve never heard Tesla described as being “bubblegum”. Very interesting.
I saw a show in Nashville municipal auditorium it was a great show. I got def lepards autograph. I was 9 they wouldn't let me all the way backstage. A roadie took my poster to get signed. It was really cool. Ill never forget it

Yep, I saw Tesla open for Def Leppard at the Cow Palace in Daly City (just outside of San Francisco) on Nov 28, 1987. I enjoyed both bands' performances, but in my opinion, Tesla was better that night. Opening the show blasting "Cumin' Atcha Live" was absolutely spectacular. And yes, that rotating stage was epic!

Troys drumming is so great. His kick doubles changed the way my 17 year old self played drums. I can hear them right now, a double on the bass drum followed by singles on the snare, you know what I mean!

I’ve known Frankie since high school. My guitarist, Vince Garcia, and Frank were very close, and we spent many a summer day at his house, playing guitar and listening to albums….
We were playing out at the same time as them, doing many shows at the O. We never played with them, because we were more metal, and it just never happened.
All great guys, down to earth and a testament to how cool things are in the 916!

The South Sac hood had a lot of musicians back then. I remember Frank back when we were 13 or so. He went riding with us to Old Town and we came back through Oak Park when it was getting dark. Scared the shit out him and the other guys.....lol. But more importantly, I also remember when he said he was going to be a rock star. He played any song, including the leads, we asked him to. We knew he was on his way. And a totally cool dude.

Tesla is my favourite band. Very underrated. White Lion is another band from that era that I am fond of.

I was dying for a great rock ‘n’ roll band in the late 80s and early 90s. Tesla and the black Crowes renewed my love for rock ‘n’ roll. Those first four Tesla albums were fantastic.
‘We’re no good together’ is one of the best mournful breakup songs of all time. Getting Better is one of the most positive messaged songs to come out of the 80’s.

I was never into this type of sound, I was raised on Punk, Metal, and then Grunge... But back in the early 90's a good friend of mine showed me "Psychotic Supper" - I still have it on tape and I still listen to it from time to time (and was really happy to know they are still around!). I even started to dig a bit into Nikolai Tesla's history! And yes, very underrated band!! Cheers from Portugal.

Fucking LOVE Tesla. Been a fan since 86 and have seen them on every tour. Just saw them 2 months ago in fact. Took my daughter. As good if not better live than on their albums!!

Not only is "Love Song" a great tune but I feel the live footage Tesla produced in the music video for the "Love Song" is one of best representations that captured what it was like to grow up as a young punk kid rocker back in the day. I mean you had to be there to really understand how kick-azz the party was when we were all together as cool as they come back then. Tesla was technically the 1st band I saw live. They opened for Motley Crue in '90. Not bad for a 10 year old's 1st show.
That tour was my first “without parents” concert. 16 years old with floor tickets. Had never heard of Tesla. Became an instant fan
They were my first concert too, with Lynyrd Skynyrd on the Bust a Nut tour when I was 16., saw them again 10 yrs later and they still sounded great.
I've seen Motley 5 times. My first rock concert was Starship with Cutting Crew lol

First saw them in Denver opening for Def Leppard. They were awesome. This was the concert that Def Leppard was filming for a music video. Two great nights.
I grew up in the Sacramento area when these guys were Earthshaker and City Kidd. I remember being at a party when they were going by Earthshaker and I thought they were such an excellent band. Had no idea they would become such a big band. Saw them as City Kidd at the Oasis Ballroom, Rock Factory, and the like, in Sacramento back in the day. Sacramento fans were so proud when they got signed and made an album. I've seen them a few times in their later years, and they're still great in concert. Lots of energy, especially when they come back to Sac and always so gracious to their hometown fans.
You neglected to mention all of their albums since “breaking up”. They include: “Into The Now”, “Forever More”, “Real To Reel”, “Twisted Wires”, “Simplicity”, “Shock”, and “Cold Blue Steel”. ALL great albums! Tesla always will rock!

I moved to FL in 89 when I was six and finally got cable. Signs was on nonstop! Loved that song and they were one of my first cds.
Great drummer, great band and underrated
I just saw them in concert this week. They rocked just as much now as they did the two other times I saw them. One about ten years ago and the other in the 1990’s. So glad they are still together and haven’t lost their touch.
tesla unfairly got the hair band label hung on them having a top 20 gold album at height of grunge was a big accomplishment

Grunge was Late 1991 early 1992. It had zero air play when Psychotic Supper was getting airplay.
Most of my favorite Tesla songs, like Paradise and Before My Eyes, never made it to the radio.
Two of my favorites too! I play Before My Eyes just about every time I pick up my guitar (weekly).
Their video for Signs and the accompanying VHS of the entire acoustic concert was the inspiration for the MTV show Unplugged.
so this came up a few times in writing the script for this. There was an interview with loudersound brian wheat said the following “I’ve had people tell me that we started that whole thing,” he says. “But MTV Unplugged was already going before Five Man Acoustical Jam. So really, we didn’t start sh**.” I'm sure he's probably being humble, but i should've included this part in the script.

Didn't Guns N' Roses have some acoustic hit out just before 5MAB, 'I used to love her...' or 'patience'? I definitely remember 'Signs' being a huge hit and subsequently every band scrambled to get on that wagon, but I swear the trend was going before Tesla made it compulsory.
Love this band. I won tickets to see them at a local radio station, Rock 107 in Scranton,PA, there were about 50 of us there and they were so cool, friendly, and they rocked.🤟
Changes is my favorite Tesla song. I saw them in the mid 90's touring with The Scorpions. I was 13, my mom took me to that show. It's still one of my favorite concerts to this day.
Mechanical Resonance is one of my favorite hard rock/metal albums of all time! Long periods of time will go by, not listening to it and then, out of nowhere, I'll get the urge to listen to it again and it's just as good as the day it came out all those years ago. I never even skip a track. The whole album, start to finish, is SO good. They should've made a crap-ton of money on that album alone. Just goes to show how corrupt the music industry is. Greed and poor management have ruined so many good bands.
Little suzi was huge but there were so many other awesome tracks as well. Tesla for sure a big part of the soundtrack to my childhood.
You nailed the key point of what makes Mechanical Resonance so great: EVERY SINGLE SONG IS EXCELLENT. So many albums have a few great songs and then you have to skip over all the "meh" songs. Not so with MR.

I've seen Tesla 7 times and they were awesome every time!! I would go again if they come around!
Seen them in 91. I wasn’t a fan initially. But I was after the show! They were incredible!
I was playing at a big rock jam on Sunday nights in Toronto in the 80s, not a blues jam, it was an old theater, turned into a music venue, and every Sunday night we would pack 300 people in that place, and because we knew people that worked at the radio station they would bring rock stars in the jam on their nights off if they were in town, one night, Tommy Lee, drop by with three of the guys in Tesla they were touring together at the time, first, Tommy Lee got up and jammed with our band, and then our band got off, and Tesla got up, I stayed and played with them, I play guitar, we did a couple songs I just remember doing a Beatles song, good times in the 80s, they gave us passes for the show, the next night after the show, we all went back to the Alma combo and jammed again, this time Sebastian Bach showed up, he was from Toronto, we did Mama kin, and some other stuff with Sebastian
I saw Tesla with Def Leppard. It was a great pairing for a show. Two great bands. I put Tesla with Y&T and Cinderella. All 3 never get the credit that they deserve. I would have love to see those 3 bands playing on the same bill.

In May 1987, Tesla and Y&T opened for Iron Maiden at San Jose State University (near where I grew up). What was so cool about that is Tesla was from nearby Sacramento and Y&T from nearby Oakland, so a lot of passionate hometown fans showed up and knew the words to every song.

I was 21 in 1987 stationed in Germany, "short" and getting close to going home. A new recruit comrs in and start's hanging out with me and my 5 other platoon friends, we all had a liking for the good Turkish h@sh lol, and pulled out this tape of a band named Tesla. I immediately made a copy and wore it out until I got home and got an official copy. Sadly never got to see them live but seriously love this band.
Love Song is one of my favorite tunes of all time. Everything about it is perfect. Tesla always seemed to be on the edge of the hair metal era, which wasn't a bad thing for me.
Psychotic Supper was their best album and also end of their run

Pretty good documentary. I grew up in South Sacramento and went to school with Brian and Frank. Brian and Frank started a band called Earthshaker around 1980. Brian was 15, and Frank was 13 they used to play a place called Gent Check Hall on the weekends sometimes. I remember Brian saying they were going to make it when he was junior in high school. I remember a lot more stuff, but it would take a minute to write it all.
I'm sure you went to the Shire Road Pub often then....I met Jeff, Brian and Tommy I believe..but not Troy. Anywhoo, I wasn't too much into the Cock Rock scene but it was cool place to see music and oil wrestling and stuff like that. I won tickets to the Bang Tango/Bullet Boyz show at the Capitol Theatre too 89ish! Yeah me!
I remember the Earthshaker days....Johnson HS. I think they played a battle of the bands or a dance or something. Most of my friends were there. I knew Frank from Fruitridge Rd. We all road BMX.
@FreeMTrider I grew up off of Vandenburg Dr. that was the street that went by Earl Warren Park. Frank used to go over to this dude's house named Kurt back in the Motocross days. Did you know Bobby Reed? He grew up near me, too. Yes, Will C. Wood and Johnson. I lived off of Toronto Way.
Tesla was amazing. I drove all over SoCal blaring their music. I think I bought Mechanical Resonance 3 times. I kept wearing the cassette out. Song and Emotion is one of my favorite songs of all time.
Fall? What fall? This band has remained consistently great throughout their entire career. They went away for a little while do to some internal issues, but came back stronger than ever. Great band. Great career.
Tesla were my favourite band for quite a few years. Saw them at The Hummingbird, Birmingham and they were outstanding!

On Guam (as City Kidd) they actually played at a club called the Pescador that would bring bands over for a month or so at a time from the west coast. There are several military bases on Guam but I never heard of them playing on a base. History says only Frank and Brian were in the band at that time. I do recall Wheat playing a Firebird bass. I was there in that club and do remember them playing mostly covers but also the Little Suzi song. A couple years later I'm station in Scotland and was reading an article in Kerrang about this band Tesla. I quickly made the connection when they told of their history on Guam.
Tommy and Jeff were already in the band at the time of the 3 month Guam stint along with original drummer Robert.

Great band. Saw them when they toured Psychotic Supper in early 92 in Providence Rhode Island.
Saw them in concert in 1991. They did a normal set, switched to an acoustic set, and back to their regular set. It was great.
I saw Tesla at Dayton's Hera ball arena, no opener , and it had maybe a 12-foot ceiling there was nothing but a small drum riser the band was on the same floor as the spectators and they played the entire first album and when people gave up a massive encore they came back and played two or three covers saying they had no more original material and they could lay a couple covers of them was train kept a rolling for about 15 minutes. I'll have to say it was one of the most awesome spectacular shows I've ever seen and I saw them several times after that in big arenas!
I was at that show as well. I was a huge Aerosmith fan back then and couldn't believe Tesla closed with Train Kep't A Rollin'! I still have a beat up drum stick of Troy's from that show. Cool someone else remembers that show! Take care.

Saw Tesla at Hera opening for DLR!!
I saw Tesla at the Barrowlands in Glasgow, Scotland, on the Psychotic Supper tour. Support was from a band called Kiss of the Gypsy. Last tune of the night was a very genuine and unexpected jam. So unexpected the support had packed away all their gear. No problem, share ours was the Tesla response! That is never going to happen again! That showed me what a band in it for the music looked like!
Tesla played an acoustic set at Harpo’s in Detroit before ‘Five Man Acoustical Jam’ came out. I had a ticket, bailed, and heard it about from my buddies afterward. On of my biggest concert regrets.
I believe I heard that show on 101.1 WRIF or 98.7 WLLZ. I don't recall which one it was.
Actually it was at the Ritz in Roseville and I was there. Great show. Wish they would have recorded that one too.
We all have a few of those. I had a chance to see Tool and Pink Floyd in 1994 and bailed on both shows because of some bullshit with friends. Missing Pink Floyd in 1994 will haunt me until I'm in the ground.

@@elbob17 I had a ticket to that Floyd show too, and bailed. They rented a bus, filled it with friends & copious amounts of party-favors, and went to that show. I chickened out of a couple shows because the potential for arrest was just too high. I missed out, and they always had a great time. I did attend too many to count from 88-93, including Monsters of Rock in the Silverdome, Lallapalooza 92, GnR Appetite for Destruction while they opened up for Aerosmith, Rush, Black Crowes, Blues Traveller, Live, Kravitz, AC/DC, KISS….those were great times 👍👊🇺🇸🤘
Thank you for covering the Tesla story. Frank Hannon took guitar lessons from me when he was 12 and was already well on the way. Around the Psychotic Supper days, both Frank and Tommy skeoch would take an occasional lesson. I appreciate that they always wanted to grow and expand musically. We in Sacramento are proud of their success. Now, my former band mate, Steve Brown is in the drum chair and they still sound great!

I was fortunate enough to see their 30th anniversary tour at the Taft theater in Cincinnati. It was ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!! The Taft holds about 2800 people????

Great mini documentary. Covered A LOT in a short video. I was right there at age 15 in 1987 when I bought their first tape. Got to see them live in 1990 on their dual headliner tour with Great White. Super impressive live! I mainly remember watching Hannon on every guitar solo. Frank Hannon is hugely underrated. He should be in the conversation of ever great guitarist.
I was part of that WAAF timeline - my best friend Ian O'Malley was the 6p-10p DJ and he knew I loved Tesla right out of the the gate. That acoustic session was AMAZING,
Great Band! I've met Jeff and Frank.. very Nice Great guys. I seen them Live a few times and even there side bands. Moon dog maine and sofa kings.. there first 2 albums are among my all time Favs.
There was enough about their sound that got them to blend with the glam scene, but their writing really toed the line and that’s what made them such a standout for the time.
One of the greatest underrated rock banks of the era.
I live about an hour away from Boston & remember listening to the station version of "Signs"; which, according to liner notes is what 'pushed' the Album "5 Man Acoustical Jam"
We played the acoustic show at the Channel during that tour.
Song and Emotion is my favorite song by them, followed by Changes. I could listen to them on repeat for days .
Surprised you didnt mention how Tesla somehow made it through the Grunge era, the post-grunge era, and onthrough the Nu-metal era, and beyond seemingly unfazed and extremely popular and successful compared to all the other metal & hardrock bands from the 80's! Im not even a fan, i just noticed the consistent play on radio vs. their counterparts.
Tesla had this incredibly cool schizophrenia going on. Half of their albums sounded like Bryan Adams or John Cougar Mellencamp, while the other half sounded like the Scorpions. It was great!
The label really messed up when they didn't make compilation albums out of that. If you combine the rock and pop songs from the first two records and then combine all of the heavier stuff from those same two records you get two flawless albums in different genres.

I was never a Tesla fan but as an electronics nerd I always thought it was cool they brought attention to that other Tesla.
Hard to have electric guitars without a dependable power grid after all.
I am glad to hear a story where the band members admit where they went wrong, patched things up, got back together and still tour.
It seems crazy that the band has to pay for the videos and album production.
The videos are pretty much infomercials for the album.
An album, I remind you that even back in the 90's, would sell for $15 on CD.
The band would get $1-$2 of that, The store that sold it would make about $1.50 and the rest would go to the label.

Great overview of one of my formerly favorite bands. The really big change wasn't so much the drugs or even the breakup. The really big change came later with the loss of Skeoch and replacement by someone with very little experience and very different style. Hannon was also getting into a "heavy metal hippie" phase, a sound you can especially hear on his solo records, but eventually ruined Tesla's sound as well, especially with the album Simplicity.

Tesla is one of the best bands of our times. I have listened to them since the beginning. They are amazing. Saw them three times live. They are amazing. I can’t say enough good about them. Their songs are some of the best ever written.
I always really liked these guys. I still bought Bust A Nut when it came out, even though I was deeply in to grunge. Frank Hanson is a great guy too, I’ve chatted with him online a while back.
Saw them live in 87 with Def Leppard in Madison Wisconsin and again in 95 at a small venue, they blew me away both times. Great band

An 80s band that still kick ass today. Just saw them last month and damn, they still sounded great. Most of these bands just cant preformed today as they did 35 years ago. Ill be sure to catch them again as soon as i can.

My favorite concert ever was in 1989 at the Palace of Auburn Hills, MI with Tesla headlining, Great White opening for them and Badlands opening the overall show. All 3 bands at the top of their game and was just an incredible show. Great music, great musicians and a great time. What really tells you about those times is that the same night Mr. Big was at the Ritz in Roseville, MI. We didn't make it to that show after as those three bands kicked our asses!! 🔥🧨🎸
I've seen the band 30+ times and my friends and I have probably seen every incarnation of Tesla with temporary/fill in members, new members, etc. I also saw their first time as a 4 piece band in Detroit at the Fox theater when Tommy was "sick". They soldiered through and even told everyone that they were welcome to a refund if they wanted since they didn't have the full band. Frankie did a great job covering both guitar parts and as amazing as he is, I don't know how he did it! I do prefer the original line-up and I do understand why Tommy had to go, but Dave Rude does a great job, is an excellent fit and musician and injected some youth and newer sounds into the band on Forever More especially. "Mild" Stevie Brown (Wild Mick Brown from Dokken's brother) is an excellent drummer for them these days too.
As a fan since 1987, all Tesla releases are great, with the exception of Shock...Phil Collen sent them down the wrong path on that...
Mechanical Resonance remains my favorite since I learned how to play 75% of the tunes. Into The Now and Forever More are #2 & #3 for me. I always like the harder edge tunes from Tesla and they deliver!
At first, I didn't care for Tesla at all. Living in Sacramento and with them bursting onto the scene, the local rock stations played them constantly and I quickly grew tired of Modern Day Cowboy and Little Suzi. However, in 1987, I saw them open up for Night Ranger and was blown away by their live performance. I've been hooked ever since. My all-time favorite Lead guitar duo of Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch.

Tesla was infamously the last band I saw before the lockdowns. Small venue in Huntsville, Alabama where they proceeded to kick absolute ass. Played all the classics mixed with a few of their new songs sprinkled in. It was perfect. Troy is one of my favorite drummers!!!

I had the opportunity to meet Tesla as a cab driver in St. Cloud, MN. They were the coolest guys ever! An absolute pleasure. They had me stop at a CVS, and one guy ran inside and I hung out for like 30min and they were so cool to talk to. We joked about stuff and they told me about how they go ice fishing when they play at the casinos south of MPLS. My best experience with celebs.
I picked them up at a movie theater around 3pm and I took them to their hotel downtown STC to play at Halfway Jam, 2011(ish). Yeah. They go to the movies before a concert! lol.

I saw them in 86 at the Texas Jam in the Cotton Bowl. They played in the afternoon and the field level wasn’t full yet. We were close to the stage and had to back away. Don’t know how an opening almost unknown band got the PA turned up that loud. We had to back away from the stage. I still love that first album. They were amazing.
This singers voice now sadly had been bandy stained. That was almost 40 years ago now. Damn

In 1994 I performed a dealer trade with my Oldsmobile dealership and one in downtown San Francisco. Before I resumed my drive to southern California, I bought Tesla's "Bust a Nut" CD. The recording was fantastic as I was driving a new Oldsmobile Aurora with the Bose Acoustimass sound system. I still have every Tesla CD.
I heard Modern Day Cowboy on MTV and immediately went to the music store to buy the album. It's still in the running for the album I've listened to most. Following it up with TGRC then Psychotic Super sealed the deal, one of my all time favorite groups.
Modern Day Cowboy is one of the best rock songs in existence. Just a fantastic song.
I never looked forward to a follow-up album more than TGRC. It didn't disappoint.

Dude Love Song was the first riff I ever learned on guitar and I was off and going. So I always had a soft spot for Tesla. Love this band. Thanks for the video
That guitarist duo were frickin out of this world. Those two could rival about anyone I could think of. Tesla is one of my favorite bands out of that era for sure. The 80's were magical times in music, as the talent was just insane.

My favorite live band of all time, but no mention of Bar7 when Tesla was on hiatus. Also a great album with some amazing lyrics.
I’ve always been proud to be a huge Tesla fan. Their music hit harder than most. They were huge in helping me learn to play guitar. I’ll never forget when they headlined the Rock Never Stops tour. A couple of the guys I went with only really knew them for Love Song. I told them “ Just wait. They’re gonna blow your mind”. After a weak set by Skid Row, then an embarrassing set by fat Vince Neal bouncing around, sounding like a cartoon character, Tesla came out playing The Gate/Uninvited. BOOM! They blew the house down. The looks on my friends’ faces - totally blown away. One of them said “I had no idea they were so good”.
One of my favorite bands, ever. These guys put on one of Hell of a show, at Rams Head Live in Baltimore. That place might hold 1800-2500 tops. So you had a great place to watch them perform and perform, and they did. They rocked the shit out of that place. There are no seats, just a great spot to stand anywhere. Love you, Joseph, I miss you, little brother. R.I.P. We nocked that off of our bucket list.
