40 years old and never heard of these ever.....been a junglist since 92....1st rave in 96 at a prime age of 16. Discovered this song and it brings joy to the soul as those golden years did as well...love this
Personally, in my case, Missing Persons and Terry Bozio is what brings to mind and did so from the very first day I heard this song. Unrelated reference, but another example of being reminded of Missing Persons was when Lady Gaga came out with "Applause"; the way she sings those verses, they sound very similar to Santi, in this one... and both obviously they had to have been influenced by Missing Persons... music wise or image wise. In a 180° example of Terry and the MP's influence on the modern era, I also remember the very very first time I watched "Misery Business" by Paramore... and I thought to myself, am I deja vúìng or is this the Missing Persons deliverance from the dead? But that was mostly image wise.. because the actual music was over produced, compressed to the max and to an almost full extent, manufactured to the max.... but coming back to Lights Out. The Siouxsie comparison is in fact spot on, I never made that connection before though it's pretty obvious, perhaps that's why ... but I agree. But in my case, the first thing that came to mind when I heard Lights Out was: "The Missing Persons"!! And the first thing that came to mind when I saw Lights Out music video for the first time was: M.I.A.!!!
I lived through the original era, worked in rock clubs in the Village, saw Bowie & The Red Hot Chili Peppers as a paid stage technician at the Ritz (early '80s) in the Village (as well as practically lived in OMFUG, CBGB's and Danceteria) and IMHO, this track and this artist, although she came much later, her music stands proudly with any of them. She reminds me of early Prince, The Bus Boys and Fishbone and makes me proud as a Black man who loved that era of music. My kids still listen to it today.
This song and performance alone made me say "I'll take her"! This song came out well past my early 20s but quickly take me back to more innocent carefree times! To those out there if you have the physical and mental ability. Make your 40s the new 20s. When you get there you know!
I was reminded of Santigold, after playing songpop on face-book, as I vaguely remember them on Later with Jools Holland. I like it because it is out on it's own, and hard to pigeon-hole genre-wise. And it doesn't pander to a particular audience.
l like santigold videos. l luv watching her sing live. great band, amazing singer. one of my favorite songs, and santigold has put out a lot of my favorite songs

Some kind of redemption song IMO, with this enjoyable sound, not pressuring at all, only cool stuff, nicely made. I don't know if my com makes sense, let's say this sound clears ears nicely, even with this damn YT quality.
I first found out about it through SongPop. I had to hunt down that cool catchy groove and thought the official video was fun. I used this video to introduce someone new to this fun.
Anyone know where this was recorded? Or what year? It's a fucking brilliant performance, but the quality is pretty potato. I'd love to try to seek out a better source.
The Ric Ocasek produced tracks for sho... that's why it reminds you of a specific sound, because specific sounds create genres...and since there are different genres, with different types of sound for every single one... some are similar to others, some they have very distinct things that for example an instrument or a sound.. could be anything. For example, a genre that's been in existence for millions of years, is one that goes by the name of "New wave" and the Thingy that makes New Wave music sound like New wave music, could be perhaps a very distinct of Synth sound, that is used to play And repeat the hook over and over in songs. So a lot of songs that have synths like that, are usually called New Wave songs. The band The Cars pioneered this kind of sound.. well.. were 1 band amongst millions of pioneers... and when the Member Ric Ocasek helped other bands record their music, it often sounded New Wave-ish. Like No Doubt, the band. The one with Gwen in it. That's why it sounds New Wave-ish. This song qualifies also as New Wave, since it's catchy and it has synths lol well... Lights Out as well as No Doubt and The Cars, could also qualify for different genre, that is similar but has a different name: Power Pop. But you're right... this song reminds you of Gwen Stefani because all of those things I mentioned have something in common.. a Genre... or 2 genres. You Should Listen to No Doubt song "Don't Let Me Down"... that song it has the same vibe as this one.. it'll do more that reminding you of Gwaen Steffuny... it'll make you go: "Schmucks... both songs are the same Band using different Band Names!!!" But it's a great song as well... and just realized you left that comment 7 years ago... so I just also realized I wasted 1 hour typing a comment that the intended recipient is never gonna read. Yay for me. Way to go Judas Refusal!
This was my wedding song. Brings a tear of joy to my eye every time I hear it.
Man that's one punky-ass amazing wedding song. Thanks for sharing that memory :)
For some reason this song gives off a 60's surfers vibe. Like Dick Dale or an old Frankie Avalon, Annette Funichello movie. She's definitely a siren.
Freaking coolest weeding song ever!!!!
Omygoodness what an excellent choice. Mine was Tonight, Tonight by The Smashing Pumpkins!!!!
Cool choice!
Respect ✊.
2020 still rocks this tune

Santi is so amazingly talented. This song in particular really evokes Siouxie Sioux's style, IMHO.
She is a huge Siouxie fan
Literally just thought same thing. Didn't know she was a Siouxsie fan . Just love her more now

She sounds better here than on the (already excellent) album. Kind of a rarity among singers.
I still love this song!
me and a couple of friends dropped acid in the Himalayas about 12 years ago, this was the album i chose to play :D
Love this
I first found out about it through SongPop. I had to hunt down that cool catchy groove and thought the official video was fun. I used this video to introduce someone new to this fun.

💖👌
I've always wanted to know this are her dancers actually singing
+Amir Anore Just lip syncing (:
+Wout Vl thank you lol 😊
no they're not. why would they play the song live
and have the backing on tape?
Because they're just there for aesthetics. They don't sing live. Sam McLean
2:19 somebody goes off pitch... so...
Studio version does not do her voice justice.
but is it darling or don't worry?!
Why does this look so old now
great song and performance...pity about the distracting passengers poncing about
Reminds No Doubt...Gwen Steffany
