i've been fantasizing about getting this pedal since it came out 10 years ago but it's too expensive for me. out of all the demos i've watched this one is by VERY VERY FAR the best one. thank you, sir. btw love the sound lab you have there.
"I'm simple like that." that makes two of us sir.. I can't believe I didn't stumbled on to you until now.. Oh well.. better late than never. such a positive soulful energy. your channel is going to the top of my list.. cheers
NEVER SEEN someone tell what it really makes till i find your video CONGRATS! always wanted one(since the launch), now i got mine! felt lucky cause moog does not produce them anymore. the midi has a lot more options! i use to plug it on a midi-usb interface on my computer, than i can edit patterns to create my own rhythms AND have a few more virtual knobs to mess around on the app(MAC & PC) provided by moog itself... my new challenge now is to learn how to clock sync with the drums... the possibilities never ends on it! LOVE THE SOUNDS IT CAN BUILD! cheers from Brasil!!!
So happy I stumbled upon this video. I adored the Murderous Maths books as a kid! So much in fact that some 8 years after I read them I found myself in university studying mathematics. Thank you so much, Mr. Poskitt, for making my life this much more colorful. Ah, this thing is beautiful. Maybe one day (:
Love your videos! There is a program for Mac or PC that Moog made that not only allows you to create and save your own sequences but also unlocks a few advanced parameter settings such as for the LFO. You can tweak all parameters in the program on a little animated version of the MuRF.
I've been in the music business for quite some time and gear (obviously) is my bread and butter. This has got to be the most friendly review I've seen in UA-cam by a longshot. Liked, subscribed (although I rarely do either) and buying a MIDI Murf as I type this (although I was kinda aiming to do that anyway!).
@@murderousmaths I’m actually running a small Midi group, the Line6 Midi Mad Scientists Club and the MuRF was I believe fully modelled into the Helix in their version 2.8 firmware. It’s oddly one that seems to have gone unnoticed for the large part at least in the searches I’ve done so far. Mapping it entirely to bring an onscreen replica would be a bit much but I’m really hoping to develop a sort of library of settings to swap between personalities if you will. There actually seem to be more patterns written into the model of it than the real thing so diving through the manuals and trying to figure out what if anything has been added or taken away. Absolutely lovely pedal and your vid really is one of the better ones out.
I am currently struggling with MF-108M Cluster Flux. It is a powerful tool. I also want to incorporate my team MuRF. Your video helps to understand its operation. I'm afraid it takes work to master the MuRF. Although the possibilities seem limitless. The sound is fantastic. Thank you for your work.
I don't think I ever heard a Flux with a Murf. If it sounds any good, I hope you make a video. I'm sure a lot of people (including me) would love to see it! Good luck.
All the moog pedals have a good drive circuit but I must say, coupled with the filters this thing is an awesome tone pedal. I hardly ever use the patterns!
@@murderousmaths just bought a MuRF without MIDI, well… it’s so good. The bandpass filters alone are so beautiful, it takes a Saw Lead to other places… almost like a vocoder… and that’z before starting animations, envelopes, phaser, or adding other pedals to the chain…! Thanks for the vid
That MIDI implementation could be useful indeed. If you've ever listened to a group called Devo, their song "Jocko Homo" has a synthesizer line in the bridge that would be incredibly difficult to do without the MIDI capability on this thing... Although, the earliest demo of the song is from 1974, so who the hell knows how they managed then...!
So is it possible to slave a second Midi Murf operating in the Mid Frequency Range with the Bands firing off at the next 8 prime numbers 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43, 47 and 53 to get a Double Prime Number Rhythmicon Pattern? That's a whopping 32,589,158,477,190,044,730 steps before all the Bands fire together again!
When testing the effect with noise it is very clear what it actually does. I generally test effects in the same manner, I'm happy that you did what you did! If you would do this with a melody or harmony the perception gets clouded! The melody or harmony might be to dominant to make a judgement. Props!
Really nice video, man. I bought a used one a few months ago, but I do not how to change the patterns with the program. Do you have a tutorial or something like that? Thank you.
Excelent,i have the murf 105 and i want to change to stereo, how i can do this cause when i plug to stereo and bypass i lost a chanel? Thanks ,from Argentina, great video!!
You're right! That would be a bit awkward for playing live if you wanted to use the stereo outputs. I've contacted MOOG to see if they can help. I know some Moogerfoogers have little circuit switches inside that can change things like this. Best wishes to you in Argentina!
Hi! It's a Nord Stage 2 which I mainly got for the great piano sound/feel although it does so many other things brilliantly. On the demo (about 11:00) the simple sequence on the synth section is done using the arpeggiator and hold functions.
You can put your own patterns in using midi if you can be bothered. However I agree with you - the best part of this machine is just the filters themselves. (See my comment at 2:09 !)
Bob pronounced it mogue, so I pronounced it mogue while he was alive. But he’s dead & gone, and now it’s just a company spelled moog. You don’t honestly expect the world to continue pronouncing moogerfooger mogerfoger forever do you?
It's very similar but whereas a filter sweeps, the Murf does the same thing in steps and is a lot more precise. I'd agree, the MF1 is generally more useful for guitarists, but the Murf is far more experimental.
This is the best video on the internet, Thank you man I love my murf
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
That's my best Christmas present: "Best video on the internet!" Happy 2024 to you and your Murf!

Another great video !!! Thanks for sharing the MURF !!
"I knew I wanted one!"
That was me. It is not one of my most used effects, but I have zero regrets.
Absolutely! I almost always have it looped in just as a really spicy tone control.
what a fun video. This really helped me better understand the emulation version in the Line 6 Helix.

The drive on the MF 105 is amazing. Its worth the price as an OD pedal. Seriously. It makes everything i've plugged into it sound better.

That’s exactly right!
This gentleman created in me, a new love of my MIDI MuRF. Since these moogerfooger pedals are no longer made, they are shooting up in price.
Glad you liked the vid! And yes, these pedals are a great investment now!

Sure, & I suppose then you could wire them in ster... wait they’re already stereo. Omg, finally, a reason for the return of Quad!
Good review. Thanks a lot. Thinking to buy one.
You are very entertaining, I love it! Keep it up :)
Thanks! I do my best - I just wish I could play as well as some of the cool musicians who have done demos for these pedals.

There's a manual and a special programme to download here:

Good luck!
Watching this makes me feel like I’m in a terry gilliam movie so great
How would the 61 key king korg fair against these 2 combined ?
Whoa! I wonder if clock data can be received through MIDI. That would be epic!

Sounds fantastic. It may be a dumb prejudice, but I tend to get turned off to anything with built in patterns.

+murderousmaths After watching again and adsorbing the prime number part, I realize the stupidity of my prejudice.
Funny, which is rare on YT.
Is this a great unit or what!
"Are you still watching"? ROFL
So you must have been watching! Thanks.
@@murderousmaths Thank you! Super enjoyable, informative and just outright funny. Also, amazing piece of gear… tempting ;-)
Thanks for the nice remarks! Good luck with getting a Murf, but if you do, it should be a very good investment!
@@murderousmaths I will see what I can do with my Buchla 296e
2*3*5*7*11*13*17*19 prime number rhythm sequence:
That would be a 1347 hr, 10 min, 45 sec long UA-cam video @ 2bps...
Hmmm.... :-)
Like I said~ about 8 weeks! And since I made this vid it's about 1/2 way through.
Damn... now I have to have one. smh
Keep watching Ebay - I was very lucky and got an ex-demo one at a silly price. Good luck!
Real bad acid.
For someone so into Moog it’s a shame you can’t pronounce it properly, they even did a keyboard that rhymes with it, The Moog Rogue

Berkshire Hunt
Nobody can pronounce my name either!

@@murderousmaths best answer ever. Funny and polite
It's pronounced like "mogue", like rogue or vogue!!!
I know - sorry! But for a Moogerfooger do you say "moag- a - fooger" or "moag - a - foager" ?
Sounds like your just running your guitar through a filter....
